INIA as manager of the Spanish agricultural and agrifood research network
Animal genetic resources
• Characterization of endangered traditional
breeds of agro-food interest: morphological
characterization and identification of distinctive
gene sequences of the populations for
conservation purposes.
• Development of models for specific applications
of assisted reproduction that ensure the survival
of breeds in danger of extinction.
• Health control of in vitro gene banks.
• Development of good methodological practice
codes for homologation of the reproductive
management and applied technologies in order
to favour biodiversity conservation of Spanish
autochthonous breeds.
Microbial genetic resources
• Identification and characterization of microbial
resources of special interest for the agro-food
industry.
• 46 project applications have been submitted to
the 2009 call, for a total of 4.9 million Euros.
39% of the projects presented have been
approved for a total of 971 thousand Euros, with
85 participating researchers, 49% women and
51% men. Public research centres have been
awarded the majority of projects (55%) with
63% of the total grant, followed by universities
(35%) with 28% of the total grant.
• In 2009 17 million Euros have been dedicated
to fund research and development project
activities in this area; 1.4 million Euros to ongoing
projects from previous calls, and 243 thousand
Euros for the first annual payment of 2009
projects.
• Scientific and technical follow-up of current
projects to determine the degree of achievement
of objectives have also been carried out in 2009.
• Projects of permanent activities for conservation
and survey of plant and animal genetic
resources related to conservation and
maintenance of collections represent another
type of participation within this action. 30 project
applications have been presented to the 2009
call for a total of 4.6 million Euros. 73% of the
projects presented have been approved for a
total of 1.7 million Euros, involving 96
researchers (40% women and 60% men). Public
research organizations have obtained 64% of
the projects with 85% of the total grant, followed
by universities and the Spanish National
Research Council (CSIC).
• In 2009 1.1 million Euros have been dedicated
to fund research and development projects for
this action, 489 thousand Euros to current
projects initiated in previous calls and 613
thousand Euros for the first annual payment of
the 2009 project call.
• Table 2 shows the list of gene banks integrated in
the collections network of the programme for
conservation and utilization of plant genetic
resources. Table 3 shows the permanent activities
financed for conservation of animal genetic
resources.
Complementary actions type f)
Two mobilizing actions initiated during the 2004-
2007 National Plan have continued as complementary
actions type f) research to promote the
contribution of the agricultural sector to reduction
of greenhouse gases, thus contributing to meeting
Kyoto Protocol commitments and type g) research
on interactions between wild fauna and livestock.
These activities have been co-financed by the
European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
During 2009, funding of projects awarded in previous
calls has continued in both activities, with an amount
of 841 thousand Euros for the Agroforestry Sinks
Action and 713 thousand Euros for Wild Fauna.
National Infrastructures
The 2009 Sub-programme on Acquisition of
Scientific and Technical Infrastructure in the INIA and
Autonomous Regions R&D&i centres had the objective
of providing agrifood research with the required
infrastructure for competitive R&D&i activities.
