3. Photonic crystals
The expansion of the possibilities of photonic crystals
depends fundamentally on three aspects related to the
materials used, the exploited interactions and the
design and manufacture of devices. Thus, aside from
the search for new materials that enhance the properties
of bare opals, to deepen in the complicated lightphotonic
crystal interactions and, on the other hand, to
design and to build structures with new optical responses
are desirable goals. In this sense the study of the
metal synthesis inside artificial opals has been undertaken
[1]. For this purpose an equipment of chemical
electroplating has been set up that has allowed to make
Zinc inverse opals. In the second front we can frame
investigations such as the study of light-photonic bands
coupling in the high energy range[2]. The concepts that
describe the phenomena observed near the Bragg peak
hardly serve to explain the complicated optical response
at high energies, where bands anticrossings, gaps by
folding in reciprocal space and diffraction phenomena
are all mixed. In the more applied aspect a chemical
vapour deposition method has been developed that
allows to grow thin silica, or other oxides, films. These
can be buried by further opal growth and can act as
microcavities [3].
transparente (ON).
4. Optical and electrooptical properties
of gel-glass dispersed liquid crystals
(GDLCs)
Glass dispersed liquid crystal (GDLC) films prepared by
organic doping of Sol-Gel matrices1, may be used as
electrooptical devices. Films scatter light according to
the number of droplets and the relative refractive indices
of the LC and the silica matrix. LCs are birefringent;
therefore their refractive index depends on the LC
orientation and the optical angle of incidence. If the
film is coated with transparent electrodes, and an electric
field is applied, a reorientation of the LC director in
the droplet occurs, producing a variation of the LC
refractive index as “seen” by the incoming light. If the
refractive index of the sol-gel substrate matches the
new LC index, the material changes from an opaque,
scattering state to a transparent state. This feature can
be used for preparing devices for visual presentation,
i.e., displays. Unaltered GDLCs switch from white opaque
to colorless transparent states. Should these materials
be used for displays, color need to be incorporated
for many applications. Direct-view, backlighted passive
displays usually include color filters located between
the backlight system and the electrooptical material.
In GDLCs, color may be included in the sol-gel matrix or
in the liquid crystal itself, allowing the preparation of
GDLC color displays. The dye properties of color GDLC
projection displays are under study. GDLCS optical properties
and preparation are currently under study.
