pulsos ultracortos. Se han obtenido recientemente con
nuestros cristales pulsos con duración inferior a 80 fs.
1. Growth and study of rare earth solid
state lasers
Czochralski and Top Seeded Solution Growth methods
are used to prepare single crystals of transparent inorganic
oxides doped with lanthanides or transition metal
ions. The aim of these crystals is their application for
the present needs of solid state laser systems. These
systems require diode pumping, miniaturization and
integration of the laser elements and ultrashort pulse
operation 1 . The activity considers Yb 3+ because of its
high absorption cross section at the emission wavelength
the of InGaAs diode lasers around 980 nm. This
ion with an emission at 1.05 m and weak losses is used
to replace Nd 3+ in lasers and as sensitizer of Er, Ho and
Tm laser. Single crystals of double tungstate DT and
double molybdate DMo families are used as hosts for
Yb 3+ and other lanthanides of interest. The detailed
spectroscopic studies and simulations have determined
the energy levels of the impurities and the contributions
to the inhomogeneous broadening of the bands 2 .
This broadening allows a 25 nm range of emission laser
tuneability in our Yb 3+ doped DT and DMo single
crystals 3 . This large bandwidth allows the emission of
ultrashort laser pulses. Recently pulsed in the sub- 80
fs regime have been demonstrated in our single
crystals.
2. Photonic crystals
WE have developed colloidal Photonic Crystals in
various aspects: A) Here we present a method to build
up (2D) planar and surface defects within 3D photonic
colloidal crystals. We combine convective self-assembly
and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes to create
a homogeneous dielectric layer either (surface
defect) on top the colloidal crystal or two colloidal
crystal films of controlled thickness. Optical characterization
results of these new structures indicate that the
trapped layer behaves as a planar defect. B) We have
developed a new method to build up a Colloidal crystals
with diamond symmetry. Here the use of a silicon template
acts as a vector for diamond growth. C) We have
started to develop photoelectrochemical solar cells with
Photonic Crystal topology.
