y espectroscopia Raman. Se aprecia cómo el tratamiento
mecánico conduce a muestras amorfas, homogéneas,
9. Layered bismuth oxides prepared by
novel methods
A survey of the preparation methods of layered
SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 and Sr 2 Bi 4 Ti 5 O 18 has been carried out, in view
of the attention these Aurivillius-type phases have
attracted, because of their potential usefulness as leadfree
ferroelectrics for high-temperature applications.
Mechanochemical activation has been employed to prepare
these materials, and attention has been paid to the
influences of the reaction media, reaction times and
starting reagents. The samples were studied by XRD,
TA, SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The mechanical treatment
yields homogeneous, amorphous samples, with
a particle size of around 300 nm. Subsequent thermal
treatment makes the particles grow in size and longdistance
order, and crystalline, Aurivillius-type phases
are obtained. The method produces energy savings (as
compared with solid- state methods), since the preparation
temperature is lowered by some 500ºC, and the
reaction time by several days.
10. Processing of ceramic materials of
the Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 relaxor-ferroelectric
solid solution: mechanochemical
activation and texturing
The processing of ceramic materials of the
Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 relaxor-ferroelectric solid solution
with high chemical homogeneity and crystallographic
quality, is necessary for establishing the basis of
the relaxor state, of the transition between the relaxor
and ferroelectric states, and of the morphotropic phase
boundary (MPB). Activity during 2004 has concentrated
on completing the study of the preparation of ceramic
materials from powder synthesised by mechanochemical
activation of precursors, which was shown to provide
the required high chemical homogeneity. Conditions
for the processing of high crystallographic quality samples
with controlled microstructure have been stated
for all compositions. The processing of MPB PMN-PT
textured ceramics with controlled crystallographic
orientation and microstructure, and with very high
deformation under the electric field, is necessary for
the development of the new generation of high sensitivity
piezoelectric applications. In 2004, we have been
working in the processing of these materials by templated
grain growth (TGG), with tape casting. An original
route based on the only use of the powder synthesised
by mechanochemical activation for both, the preparation
of the platelets and the submicron size
polycrystalline matrix, is being explored.
