1. Characterisation of ferroelectric thin
films by advanced X-ray diffraction
methods
Texture is key for the understanding of the behaviour
of ferroelectric materials, as it is a determinant factor of
their properties. In order to carry out a reliable quantitative
determination of the texture of ferroelectric thin
films, advanced methods of analysis of the X-ray diffraction
profiles are used, namely the recently developed
combined approach, which allows not only the
access to quantitative information on the different components
of the global texture, but also on structural
and microstructural parameters of both the ferroelectric
film and the substrate, not available by more conventional
methods of analysis. Problems concerning the
separation of contributions from planes with close
crystal spacings can only be solved with the application
of these new methods.
2. Elastic, dielectric and piezoelectric characterization
of lossy ferro-piezoelectric
materials
The iterative automatic method for the characterization
of piezoceramic materials was developed in the 90´s
for piezoceramic plates and bars thickness poled, longitudinally
poled bars, shear plates (C. Alemany et al. J.
Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 27, 148-155 (1994)) and thickness
poled thin disks (C. Alemany et al. J. Phys. D: Appl.
Phys. 28, 945-956 (1995)). This method is been
currently used in the study of new materials at the
Ferroelectric Materials Dpt. of ICMM [1]. The method
was now applied consistently to three resonator geometries
and four resonance modes to provide all the
elastic, dielectric and piezoelectric parameters needed
to obtain the full characteristic matrices of a commercial
piezoelectric ceramic [2]. This method is also applicable
to most of thin films, in general to piezoelectric
polycrystalline materials with 6mm symmetry [3]. This
full characterization is needed to use the Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) in the study of the resonance modes of
piezoceramics with complex geometries.
