16. Measurement of hydriding processes
from their inner surface of nuclear fuel
claddings
A primary failure in the cladding seal has as consequence
a severe secondary failure that consist in the
cladding hydriding from its inner surface. The main
problem to developpe an effective protection layer has
been the absence of an effective method that allows to
compare the different behaviour against the hydriding
inner cladding surfaces. To solve this problem we have
developed a method (1) in which the hydriding is performed
by heating the cladding in an ultra-high vacuum
chamber while hydrogen flows inside the tube. The
external H 2 partial pressure, the tube electrical resistance
and the power dissipated by the reaction are measured
throughout the process. These measurements at
different hydriding stages are complemented with an
optical microscopy analysis of the claddings give
insight into the main physical processes. As a consequence
a description of the hydriding first stages is
provided. The method allows the measurement of the
incubation and failure times and the total energy dissipated
by the hydriding reaction. During the last year we
have separated the hydriding kinetics of the liner from
the main wall cladding component. and we have study
the effect of Fe addition ( 50-200ppm) into the liner.
17. Electronic properties at surfaces and
simulation of STM images
A formalism based on Green’s functions that permits
modelling surfaces as semi-infinite systems has been
developed, also allowing to simulate STM images which
can later be compared against experimental images.
This approach often allows to determine the most relevant
structural properties at the surface –e.g. discriminate
among different models. All these calculations are
realized employing the green code, for which an interface
to the ab initio SIESTA code has been implemented.
We have studied quasi-periodic structures of H2O on
Pd(111) or the Fermi Surfaces of 2D rare-earth silicides
grown on Si(111).
