1. Adhesión entre cerámicas (ZrO 2 ) y
metales (Ni)
1. Ceramic (ZrO 2 ) metal (Ni) adhesion
The ZrO 2
(0001)/Ni(111) interface has been studied in
detail from a theoretical point of view by DFT based ab
initio calculations. More precisely, we have determined
the different types of interface bonds, their relative
strengths, and how these properties are modified by
the presence of vacancies. These studies have let us to
the conclusion that ZrO 2 /Ni adhesion is mainly determined
by the number of degrees of freedom that the
ZrO 2 surface has upon reconstruction, so that the larger
the number of degrees –e.g. via the existence of vacancies-
the smaller the adhesion.
2. Análisis composicional de superficies
y capas delgadas mediante la técnica de
GDOES
(compuestos binarios y ternarios) suministradas
por centros industriales y de investigación.
2. Surface and depth profiling composition
analysis of thin films by GDOES
A new analysis set-up for surface and in depth profiling
of thin films, based on glow discharge optical emission
spectroscopy (GDOES) techniques has been mounted
and calibrated. The initial work has been devoted to the
determination of the resolution in depth of the system
for different metal multilayers. The depth resolution
mainly depends on three effects: First, the existence of
an edge well around the crater (“edge effect”), deeper
than the crater bottom. A second effect is the induced
roughening of the crater bottom, which produces a broadening
of the interface width. Finally, the sputtering of
material re-deposited at the crater wall causing a higher
mixing of the layers. The importance of these effects
was tested on multilayer stacks consisting of alternating
chromium and titanium layers of different thickness.
This technique has been successfully applied in
compositional depth profiling of large variety of samples,
conducting and insulating (ceramic) binary and
ternary compounds provided by industrial and research
centres.
3. Characterization of surface modified,
bioinert titanium alloys
One of the most interesting applications for titanium
alloys is their use as biomaterials. However, it is very
important to improve the hardness of these materials
because it is lower than that of other commercial surgical
implants. In this research, the surface of different Ti
alloys was modified by nitrogen ion implantation. The
ion-implanted materials were studied by means of different
electrochemical techniques to evaluate their
corrosion behaviour. In order to determine the influence
of the ion implantation process on these alloys, the
surface composition of these modified alloys was determined
by different spectroscopic techniques (XPS, XAS).
Similarly, the effects of the nitrogen implantation on
the surface morphology and topography as well as the
changes generated in the surface elasticity of the alloys
were investigated by using atomic force microscopy
(AFM). The microstructural characterization of the ionimplanted
alloys was performed by scanning electron
microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
