5. Molecular dynamics of metallic nanostructures
We study the appearance of high-stability structures in
metallic nanocontacts and nanowires. These “magic”
configurations present electronic or ionic character,
and they are of fundamental interest to determine favorable
nanowires configurations of potential use in future
nanoelectronics. Using Molecular Dynamics we analyze
the nanowire evolution under stretching conditions,
explaining the experimental conductance histograms.
6. Crystalline structure and influence of
molecular chain length on the structure
and stability of organic self assembled
monolayers (SAMs)
Alkanethiols molecules(S-Cn) of different lengths
(n=10, 12, 16, 18, 22) have been used to obtain two
dimensional molecular films whose structure can be
determined by the combination of both atomic force
microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction
(GIXRD). Structural and mechanical stability studies
have allowed us to establish the relative stability of the
different molecular configurations as a function of
molecular chain length. The differences observed are
explained by estimating the different energetic contributions
(molecule-substrate and intermolecular interactions).
For shorter molecules, those configurations
where the molecules present higher tilt angles are more
stable than for longer molecules. The GIXRD studies
performed at the European Synchrotron Radiation
Facility (ESRF) allowed us to face a controversial question
and to solve the molecular structure of the c(4x2)
surface reconstruction of the monolayer for a chain
length of 16 carbons.
