posibilidades y damos a conocer diversos
ejemplos de empresas que guiando
diferentes estrategias han terminado en el
escenario del éxito.
El presente número recoge diferentes
experiencias sudamericanas, españolas,
holandesas o italianas y no vinculadas
solamente al comercio de las frutas y
hortalizas frescas. También se recogen
experiencias de empresas de servicios y de
la industria auxiliar, actividades claves en
el impulso del desarrollo comercial del
negocio.
Examples
of good
management
The fruit and vegetable sector has a
lot of companies which are linked to
the success from the management.
Today, the luck factor has left to be an
argument in order to achieve the success
toward other elements, such as knowledge,
risk or commitment.
The situation of competitiveness of fruit
and vegetable sector requires a high level
of market knowledge, the competition and
opportunities. But not all professionals
and not all companies are in the best conditions
to achieve challenges and investments
of future.
In fact, there are a large number of companies
that have set the date of its death the
day they decided to take a step forward.
In this edition of F&H on the occasion of
Fruit Logistica, we give several examples of
companies that have developed different
successful strategies.
This issue includes different south american
experiences, Spanish, Dutch or italian
and they are linked to other activities apart
from the trade in fresh fruits and vegetables.
There are also experiences of service
companies and auxiliary industry, and key
activities for the marketing development
of the company.
In fact, behind the success of a group of
companies of producers or trading companies,
there is an idea or a product or a value
generated from the auxiliary industry or
fruit and vegetable services.
There is no doubting that from the laboratories
of the seed companies products
have emerged value-added products that
have served to lift several companies to
the success.
Rougeline |
‘commodity’. Y muchas se
han quedado en el camino
por reaccionar tarde o por no
realizar la apuesta de manera
completa.
Si hay una firma de productores
que ha reaccionado
ágilmente al escenario en
Francia, ésta es Rougeline.
Su transición de la cartera de
productos convencionales a
los denominados pequeños
frutos y especialidades ha
sido ágil y diseñada con los
productores. “Hay un proyecto
conjunto donde los productores
y los consumidores
son los principales protagonistas”,
señala Jérémie Chabanis,
director de Marketing
de Rougeline.
Este proyecto suponía una
apuesta por variedades ‘nicho’
como pequeños frutos en tomate
y variedades muy tradicionales
de sabor y antiguas.
El proyecto empieza a desarrollarse
en 1996 y en el año
2000 es cuando empieza a
iniciarse la consolidación con
los primeros lanzamientos de
tomate cherry rojo y amarillo.
Un proyecto que manejaba
cuatro claves añadidas: disponer
de oferta durante los
12 meses, realizar una apuesta
por el producto fresco y local
para que no hubiese más
de 150 kilómetros entre el
productor y la tienda, apostar
por variedades con sabor y
seguridad alimentaria y sostenibilidad
en la producción.
Para mantener la actividad
durante los tres meses, Rougeline
cuenta con tres gran-
des áreas de producción en
Francia, aunque el grueso se
encuentra en la zona del Sur.
Cartera y compromiso. Con
estas premisas, Rougeline
cuenta hoy con 58.000 toneladas
de tomate, 3.000 toneladas
de fresas y 6.000 toneladas
de pepinos, además de
otras categorías de verduras.
La gama de especialidades
de tomate y variedades tradicionales
suponen el 30
por ciento del volumen, una
gama que gana en presencia,
ya que hace dos años suponía
más del 20 por ciento.
En este proceso de cambios
“el productor ha tenido un
rol muy importante, ya que
se involucraron en el desarrollo.
Nuestros productores
son los primeros en desarrollar
y testar nuevas variedades
y procesos tecnológicos”,
apunta Gilles Bertrandias,
director comercial de la fir-
ma francesa.
Rougeline ha movido ficha
atendiendo “a la evolución
de los consumidores, ya que
los futuros consumidores
comerán diferente mañana
a como se consume hoy y el
productor debe saber cambiar
su oferta en función de
la demanda”, apostillan desde
la firma francesa.
Gilles Bertrandias es director comercial de Rougeline.
Many French companies
have tried to commit with
specialities in order to
overcome the competition
of Spain and Morocco
in ‘commodity’ products.
Many of them have fallen
along the way due to react
late or do not use all resources.
If there is a company of
producers that has reacted
strongly to France, is
Rougeline.
Its transition from the
portfolio of conventional
products to small fruits
and specialities has been
flexible and designed with
the producers. “There is a
joint project where producers
and consumers are the
main protagonists”, says
Jérémie Chabanis, marketing
manager of Rougeline.
to win the market
rougeline is the french company that began the
traditional varities in flavor
and old. The project is developed
in 1996 and in 2000
is consolidated with the development
of red and yellow
cherry tomatoes.
A project with four keys: offer
for 12 months, commitment
with the fresh and local
product in order to ensure
that there is no more than
150 kilometers between the
producer and the shop, gamble
for varieties with flavor
and food safety and sustainability
in production.
To maintain the activity for
three months, Rougeline has
three major production areas
in France, although the
major part is in the South.
Portfolio and commitment.
Rougeline has 58,000 tons
of tomato, 3,000 tons of
strawberrie and 6,000 tons
of cucumber in addition to
other vegetables. Tomato
specialities and traditional
varieties are the 30 percent
of the volume, a range that
gains presence, because two
years ago it was supposed
more than 20 percent.
In this process of changes
“the producer has had a very
important role, since they
get involved in the development.
Our producers are the
first to develop and test new
varieties and technological
procedures”, says Gilles Ber-
Companies
trandias, marketing manager
of the French company.
Rougeline has taken the initiative
respect to “the evolution
of consumers, since the
consumers will eat different
tomorrow respect to what is
eaten today and the producer
must know how to change
the offer in accordance with
the demand”, say the French
company.
2011. Hoy sus operaciones
en el comercio internacional
han alcanzado un nuevo te-
cho: 140.000 toneladas.
La clave del rápido desarrollo
de Agrícola Famosa se basa
en la analítica de mercado
que “nos hace reaccionar
rápidamente ante los movimientos
de la demanda”, señala
Luiz Roberto Barcelos,
director de la empresa ubicada
en Mossoró.
Penetración. La estrategia de
Agrícola Famosa se basa en
el liderazgo en los mercados
donde trabaja y en donde la
demanda es activa. Hoy esta
empresa alcanza una cota de
Luiz R. Barcelos James Cackett.
mercado en melón de invierno
de casi el 70 por ciento
entre las cadenas británicas
y lidera el mercado español.
Para mantener este escenario
de liderazgo, la empresa ha
desestacionalizado su foco
de producción y ha invertido
en Senegal para “mantenernos
en el mercado desde sep-
tiembre hasta mayo, cuando
empiezan a llegar los primeros
melones del Sur de Europa”,
señala Barcelos.
to its 21,000 hectares and
a production that exceeds
the 200,000 tons of all categories.
The development
of this company is the result
of your bet and positioning
in the European
market in order to meet a
need in this virgin destination
at the beginning of
the twenty-first century:
the consumption of melon
in winter.
To know the impact on
the demand of the winter
melon in Europe, the company
opened an office of
by James Cackett. He has
invested their time making
progress between the British
of the hollow of Nolem
in 2009, after closing
their facilities by decision
of the owner company, the
campaña 2011 y permanecerán
en los próximos años
a pesar “de las dificultades
de adaptación que estamos
teniendo”, afirma Barcelos.
La empresa quiere aprovechar
el éxito del melón de
invierno en Europa y su
importante cota de mercado
para adentrarse en otros
productos como la papaya
o el espárrago. La estrategia
de Agrícola Famosa en estos
productos pasará “por ser
que nuestra competencia
brasileña y así iremos ganando
mercados”, adelanta Barcelos.
market of winter melon in europe, betting on an
development of the demand.
Irish Fyffes.
Agrícola Famosa reacted
quickly to the fall of Nolem
that’s why their exports increased
by nearly 34 percent
in 2009-2010 with respect to
the previous campaign and
increased again a 17 percent
in 2010-2011. Nowadays, its
operations in international
trade have reached a new
peak: 140,000 tons.
Famous Agricultural reacted
quickly to the fall of Nolem
and why their exports increased
by nearly 34 percent
in the 2009-2010 campaign
with respect to the previous
exercise and increase again
17 per cent in the year 2010-
2011. Today its operations
in international trade have
reached a new roof: 140,000
tons.
The key to the fast development
of Agrícola Famosa
is based on the analysis of
market that “makes us react
quickly to changes of the
demand,” says Luiz Roberto
Barcelos, president of the
company located in Mossoró.
Introducction. The strategy
of Agrícola Famosa is based
on leadership in the markets
where it works and where the
demand is active. Currently,
this company reaches a market
share in winter melon for
almost a 70 percent between
Companies
the British chains and leads
the Spanish market.
To maintain this situation of
leadership, the focal point of
production of the company
is off-season and it has invested
in Senegal to “stay in
the market from September
until May, when start to get
the first melons of Southern
Europe,” says Barcelos.
The company opened its first
farms in Senegal in 2011 and
will remain in the next few
years, despite “the difficulties
of adaptation that we are
having”, says Barcelos.
The company wants to take
advantage of the success of
the winter melon in Europe
and its important market
share to expand into other
products such as papaya or
asparagus. The strategy of
Agrícola Famosa in these
products will pass “to be
more competitive in price
than our competitors from
Brazil so we will win markets”,
expects Barcelos.
principios empresariales
basados en la innovación
permanente, la capacidad
de superación y el trabajo
en equipo, como variables
indispensables para la satisfacción
de las necesidades del
mercado.
Hoy en día, ese gran proyecto
es una realidad convertida
en la mayor productora de
fresas del mundo. Una compañía
líder que representa la
unión de más de 150 socios
y el trabajo, temporada tras
temporada, de más de 5.000
personas.
I+D. La apuesta de Fresón
de Palos por la innovación
constante y la búsqueda de
la calidad total ha permitido
ir creciendo temporada tras
temporada, respondiendo
siempre a las exigencias del
mercado y a las expectativas
de nuestros clientes, quienes
ven en nuestra marca un sinónimo
de garantía, calidad
y servicio.
El actual proceso productivo
de Fresón de Palos es el resultado
de tres décadas de trabajo,
investigación, apuesta
por las nuevas tecnologías,
y respeto al medio ambiente.
La pasada campaña 2012
supuso para Fresón de Palos
un record histórico en lo que
a volumen de producción se
refiere, alcanzando un total
de más de 69.000 toneladas
de fresón en fresco, un incremento
de 19.864 toneladas
más que en la campaña
2011.
En lo referente al fresón destinado
a industria, cerró la
campaña con cerca de 17.000
toneladas, un incremento de
casi 7.000 toneladas respecto
a 2011.
En un mercado y un entorno
social en permanente
transformación, reforzar el
valor de las marcas se hace
indispensable. Más aún si
se trata de una marca que
representa a una cooperativa,
un modelo de sociedad
basado en la unión de recursos
que necesita, quizá más
que cualquier otra empresa,
una permanente revalorización
de su imagen comercial
y social como vehículo de
penetración y asentamiento
entre sus diferentes públicos.
Si además de esto, se
hace referencia a una marca
que representa a una empresa
líder a nivel mundial, las
necesidades comunicacionales
y publicitarias se hacen
aún mayores y requieren
actuaciones responsables en
la misma proporción. Conscientes
de ello, en Fresón de
Palos se continúa trabajando
strawberries, an increase of
19,864 tons more than in
2011.
As regards strawberries
for industry, the company
closed the campaign with
close 17,000 tons, an increase
of almost 7,000 tons
compared to 2011.
Enhace brand value is essential
in a market and a social
environment in constant
transformation. Still more if
it is a brand that represents
a cooperative, a model of
society based on unified resources
that needs, maybe
more than any other company,
a permanent revaluation
of its trademark as a vehicle
in order to get a greater penetration
and presence between
different publics.
If on top of this, there is
reference to a brand that
represents a world leader
Companies
company, the need for communication
and advertising
requires a responsible action.
Aware of this, Fresón de
Palos continues working on
the development of a brand
strategy, searching for loyalty
and the consolidation
of its privileged position
among the major distributors.
el ‘modelo almería’ al mercado internacional. fue
hace 18 aÑos en méxico y hoy cuenta con cinco delegaciones
en todo el mundo.
Novedades Agrícolas creció
como muchas empresas a la
sombra del desarrollo de la
horticultura invernada desarrollada
en el sureste español
a partir de la década de los
70. La primera piedra se colocaba
en mayo de 1978 y se
centró en ser distribuidores
de tecnología de importación
en el segmento de los riegos,
como lo hicieron muchas
empresas.
Su desarrollo fue progresivo
en consonancia con la expansión
‘gacela’ de la horticultura
invernada en Andalucía,
pero fue en 1982 cuando ubicaba
la base de sus cimientos:
la producción industrial.
La empresa empezaba a
producir materiales de riego
y componentes asociado
con un productor de fibra
de vidrio para la cartera de
abonados y filtración. La
ampliación de la cartera de
productos fue por inercia y se
proyectaron hacia el mundo
de la agricultura al aire libre
y de invernadero.
Aquel proceso expansivo de
cartera de productos permitió
a Novedades Agrícolas
empezar a realizar las primeras
operaciones internacionales
a Portugal y Marruecos,
“gracias a la presencia de ferias
como Expo Agro”, señala
Lucas Galera, gerente de Novedades
Agrícolas.
Globalización. Pero fue hace
18 años cuando la empresa
empezaba a firmar su desarrollo
empresarial de la
mano de la exportación. “No
eran muchas las empresas
españolas de tecnología agro
que se adentraban a trabajar
mercados emergentes”, recuerda
Galera. El salto se produce
en México, aprovechando
la firma del Tratado de
Libre Comercio entre México
y USA. “Tuvimos una visión
tras este acuerdo. México se
convertiría en el proveedor
de hortalizas de USA como
España lo es de Europa e hicimos
una apuesta fuerte”,
señala Galera.
“Cuando llegamos a México
Lucas Galera.
no había invernaderos, ni
tecnología. Todo eran cultivos
al aire libre”, indica Galera.
Un escenario en el que
decidimos apostar por la
tecnología, el conocimiento
y la postventa. La tecnología
exportando el ‘modelo Almería’
creando Etifa –centro
Novedades Agrícolas grew
as many companies under
the development of the
horticulture in greenhouse
developed in southeastern
Spain from the decade of
the 70’s. The first stone
was placed in May of 1978
and focused on the distribution
of irrigation technology
imported, as other
companies did.
The development was
progressive together with
‘gazelle’ expansion of horticulture
in greenhouse in
Andalusia, but it was in
1982 when developed the
industrial production.
The company began to
produce irrigation and
components materials
together with fiberglass
producer. The expansion
of the portfolio of products
was by inertia and it
was focused on the open
air agriculture and greenhouse.
That expanding of port-
para dar a conocer el desarrollo
de Almería, y la postventa,
“montando delegaciones
en mercados emergentes, al
contrario de otras empresas
internacionales”, finaliza Galera.
De hecho, el director de Novedades
Agrícolas recuerda,
que a nivel particular invitaron
y organizaron lo que fue
la primera misión comercial
con 32 empresarios mexicanos
a Almería, y que fue clave
“para que estos profesionales
reconociesen a Almería como
el modelo a seguir y Novedades
Agrícolas como un referente
jump was in Mexico, taking
advantage of the signing of
had a vision after this agreement.
Mexico would become
USA as Spain is of Europe
and we made a deep commitment”,
says Galera.
“There were not greenhouses
In fact, the company director
of Novedades Agrícolas
recalls that they invited and
Feito y Toyosa |
comercio tradicional.
La plataforma les sirvió para
incrementar su área de influencia
hacia Galicia, Castilla
y León, Madrid, Navarra
o el País Vasco. Un escenario
de posibilidades que vino
de la mano de una estrategia
enfocada a “dar servicio
completo al comercio tradicional”,
señala Javier Feito,
gerente de Feito y Toyosa.
Y así a la misma vez que se
levantaba la plataforma de
Feito y Toyosa, se diseñaba
un programa pensado para
liderar el negocio del comercio
tradicional: Lirepe –Línea
de Recepción de Pedidos-.
Este producto era la respuesta
que “necesitaba el cliente del
comercio tradicional y de las
fruterías para gestionar mejor
sus demandas y su logística”,
apunta Feito. Con este
servicio, el mayorista Feito y
Toyosa realiza toda la acción
de selección, preparación de
grupajes y logística una vez
que el cliente ha realizado el
pedido.
“Al frutero siempre le ha gustado
estar presente en las
compras, pero con la competencia
de los supermercados,
que gozan de tiendas abier-
Javier Feito, gerente de Feito y Toyosa.
tas durante muchas horas, no
siempre es viable competir si
tienes que comprar a primera
hora de la mañana y estar en
la tienda durante todo el día”,
apunta Feito. Por este motivo
con Lirepe, el mayorista realiza
este trabajo y “ponemos
a pie de tienda el pedido del
cliente”, apunta Feito.
Sumar clientes. Gracias a Lirepe,
“hemos incrementado
nuestra cartera de clientes en
el Norte de España, donde la
presencia de las fruterías es
importante, y hemos conseguido
hacer viable este tipo
de comercios, ya que el tendero
puede centrarse más en
la tienda”, apunta Feito.
La estrategia de mirar al comercio
tradicional no termina
sólo en Lirepe, sino que
se afianza con la creación de
una marca propia: Feirgold.
“Nuestro cliente es marquista
y con Feirgold buscamos
fidelizar a nuestra clientela
en el segmento medio alto de
calidad pero con precio asequible”,
apunta Feito.
Feirgold empezó recogiendo
la cartera de naranjas, limones
y melones con una estrategia
de estar presente en el
mercado durante los 12 meses,
y un año más tarde ya
contemplaba el 50 por ciento
del volumen comercializado
por Feito y Toyosa, sumando
a la marca las categorías de
fruta de hueso, fruta de pepita,
toda la gama de cítricos y
kiwis.
Feito y Toyosa |
Give service
to the traditional trade
Feito y Toyosa is the
second most important
wholesale in turnover
in the North of Spain.
In 2006 inaugurated a
trading platform (facility)
in Mercasturias on
which have developed
its work, focusing its
activity on the traditional
trade.
The platform served
to increase its area of
influence toward Galicia,
Castile and Leon,
Madrid, Navarra or the
Basque Country. A scenario
of possibilities
with a strategy focused
on “give a full service to the
grocery”, says Javier Feito,
manager of Feito y Toyosa.
It was lifted the platform of
Feito y Toyosa at the same
time that it was designed a
program to lead the business
of the grocery: Lirepe
-Line of receipt of orders-.
This product was the answer
that “needed the customer
of groceries and greengroceries
in order to do better
its demands and logistics,”
says Feito. With this service,
the wholesaler Feito y
Toyosa makes the selection,
preparation and logistics
once the customer has done
the order.
“The greengrocer has always
liked to be present in shopping,
but with competition
from supermarkets, which
enjoy with stores opened
for many hours, it is not
always possible compete if
you have to buy a first hour
in the morning and being
in the shop throughout the
day,” says Feito. For this reason
with Lirepe, the wholesaler
carries out this work
and “we put the customer’s
order in your store”, says
Feito.
Add customers. Thanks to
Lirepe, “we have increased
our portfolio of customers
in the North of Spain, where
the presence of the green-
Companies
lirepe and feirgold. a service and an own brand for the groceries
that have allowed the wholesaler feito y toyosa increase their
turnover, being the greengroceries and groceries the customer
of reference.
groceries is important,
and we have done viable
this kind of shops,
because the shopkeeper
can focus more on
the shop,” says Feito.
The strategy towards
the groceries do not
only ends in Lirepe,
but that is strengthened
by the creation of
a own brand: Feirgold.
“Our customer likes
the brands and with
Feirgold we are looking
for loyalty to our customers
in the mediumhigh
segment of quality
but with affordable
price,” says Feito.
Feirgold began picking up
the portfolio of oranges,
lemons and melons with
a strategy to be present in
the market during the 12
months, and a year later it
was the 50 percent of the
volume marketed by Feito y
Toyosa, adding to the brand
the categories of stone fruit,
top fruit, the whole range of
citrus fruits and kiwis.
Lehmann & Troost |
firma holandesa Lehmann &
Troost se ha hecho fuerte y
solvente a base de trabajar en
el mercado libre y no vincularse
a los programas.
“Nuestro objetivo es cubrir
los huecos de mercado de las
cadenas y de otros operadores.
Las cadenas cuentan con
sus programas pero siempre
tienen vacíos que nosotros
cubrimos”, señala Abraham
Troost, director de Lehmann
& Troost.
La posición de Lehmann &
Troost en el mercado se ve
beneficiada por la crisis y su
ubicación en Holanda. Por
la crisis, ya que las cadenas
se han hecho más conservadoras
y dejan más huecos
que cubrir y por su ubicación
geoestratégica, ya que “cuan-
do falta producto en el mercado,
Holanda se convierte
en un buen mercado”, recuerda
Troost.
Rentabilidad. El mercado
libre es más inestable e inquietante
pero “más rentable
y con mayor margen comercial
por operación”, apunta
Troost. Es por este motivo,
que la empresa se encuentra
entre las más solventes de
Holanda y le permite pagar
por debajo de los 30 días.
El marco de rentabilidad
de Lehmann & Troost no se
basa sólo en los huecos de
los programas de las cadenas
de supermercados, sino en
trabajar con operadores independientes
que los grandes
grupos abandonan.
Las empresas productoras
europeas “se centran demasiado
en los programas de los
supermercados y olvidan las
Abraham Troost, manager Lehmann&Troost.
necesidades de operadores
independientes y descuidan
unos nichos de mercado muy
interesantes como el de las
empresas étnicas”, apunta el
ejecutivo holandés.
La entrada de africanos, turcos,
pakistaníes o indios en
el negocio detallista está facilitando
el surgimiento del
negocio tradicional en toda
Europa. “Este tipo de clientela
compra según sus necesidades
y a diario y están
levantando el negocio de la
demanda, que ha estado muy
estabilizado en los últimos
años”, advierte Troost.
La recuperación del mercado
tradicional viene también ligado
al posicionamiento de
la oferta europea. “Los consumidores
son más conscientes
y apuestan por el producto local.
Son más baratos y tienen
un estándar alto de calidad”,
concluye Troost.
In a business where the
dream of many producers
is to achieve a program of
a supermarket chain, the
Dutch company Lehmann
& Troost has become
strong and solvent on the
basis of working on the
free market and not be
linked to the programs.
“Our goal is to fill the
market gaps of the chains
and other operators. The
chains have their programs
but they always
have a hollow that we cover,”
says Abraham Troost,
manager of Lehmann &
Troost.
The position of Lehmann
& Troost in the market is
benefiting from the crisis
and its location in the
Netherlands. With the
crisis, the chains have
become more conservative
and leave more hollows
to cover and due to
its geostrategic location,
“when lack product in the
market, the Netherlands
becomes a good market,”
recalls Troost.
Profitability. The free market
is more unstable and
worrying but “more profitable
and with higher markup
per operation,” says
Troost. For this reason,
the company is among the
most solvents companies
of Holland so can pay below
the 30 days.
The profitability of
Lehmann & Troost is
Lehmann & Troost |
programs
and play in the
free market
work outside of the closed
programs of supermarkets
means sacrifice, worry but
better economic results.
lehmann & troost shows with
its strategy in the free market a
solvency above average.
based not only on the hollow
of the programs of supermarket
chains, but in
working with independent
operators that large
groups leave.
European producer companies
the needs of independent
operators and neglect
some market niches very
interesting such as the
ethnic enterprises,” says
the dutch executive.
The entry of Africans,
Turks, Pakistanis or Indians
in the retail business is
facilitating the emergence
of the traditional business
throughout Europe. “This
type of customer purchase
according to your needs
and they are raising the
demand, which has been
very stabilized in recent
years,” warns Troost.
The recovery of the traditional
market is also
linked to the new positioning
of the European
offer. “Consumers are
more aware and they tend
to the local product. It is
cheaper and has a high
standard of quality,” concludes
Troost.
Aquella nueva variedad
–little gem- no se encontraba
asentada en España y era
desconocida entre los consumidores.
“Era aprovechar
el momento y diferenciarse
en el mercado sin saber cuál
iba a ser el comportamiento
del consumidor”, señala José
Ramón Sánchez, director de
Marketing de El Dulze.
Aquellos corazones de lechuga
se hicieron mayores de
edad hace ocho años, cuando
El Dulze decide invertir
en publicidad generalista en
televisión para abordar una
gran parte del mercado y darse
a conocer, ofreciendo un
producto de calidad y con un
precio de referencia superior
al del resto de la competencia.
“Nuestra seña de identidad
es ofrecer un little gem y un
producto de hoja para el segmento
‘premium’ y de calidad
suprema con respecto a
los demás tanto en el producto
como el packaging”, señala
José Carlos Gómez, director
comercial de El Dulze. La
empresa ha invertido 12 millones
de euros en los últimos
seis años en optimizar todos
sus procesos para ganar en
competitividad –variedades,
producciones, manipulación,
robotización, envasado, …-.
La empresa asumió que
una categoría ‘premium’ es
asunto de nichos y más en
un producto especialmente
‘commodity’ como la lechuga
donde las cadenas de supermercados
lo utilizan en sus
promociones como un producto
accesible y barato. Es
por este motivo que la marca
El Dulze se dirige al segmen-
to mayorista y al canal tradicional
español donde “hay
un perfil de consumidor dispuesto
a pagar más por una
lechuga de calidad con sabor
y consistencia”, apunta Sánchez.
Solo Consum es la única
cadena española que acoge
la marca El Dulze.
Exportación. España ha sido
el mercado de referencia para
El Dulze, pero hace seis años
empezaron a apuntar hacia
la exportación como respuesta
a la debilidad de la demanda
española, que les provocó
un cambio en la tendencia en
el volumen de negocio.
En la campaña 2010-2011 la
exportación aportó el 20%
de los ingresos y cierra 2011-
2012 con la expedición suponiendo
el 35%. “Buscábamos
mercados similares al español
en cuanto a la búsqueda de
marcas de calidad por parte
del consumidor, y Francia
reunía estas características
para empezar en el mercado
europeo”, señala Sánchez.
La estrategia de El Dulze en
los mercados internacionales
pasa por disponer de un
‘partner’ por destino “que
conozca el mercado perfectamente,
ya que nuestro producto
no está hecho para las
mayorías”, apunta Gómez.
Además de Francia, los productos
de El Dulze empiezan
a sumar en cadenas alemanas
y suizas, que contemplan
productos de marca.
20 years ago, the family
business El Dulze (Murcia)
launched a new variety of
lettuce called ‘corazón de
lechuga’ onto the spanish
market. That new variety
-little gem- was not settled
in Spain and was unknown
among the consumers. “It
was take advantage of the
moment and distinguish
ourselves in the market
without knowing what
was going to be the consumer
behavior,” says José
Ramón Sánchez, marketing
manager of El Dulze.
Those lettuce hearts were
adults eight years ago,
when El Dulze decided
to invest in generalist advertising
in order to reach
a large part of the market
and make themselves
José R. Sánchez (left) marketing manager and José C. Gómez, commercial manager.
El Dulze |
Looking for niches
of quality
bet on the quality in lettuce is not an easy task.
el dulze makes it sacrificing markets and looking
at customers willing to pay more for the leaf
products.
known, offering a quality
product with a higher price
of reference than the rest of
the rivalry.
“Our hallmark is provide a
little gem and a leaf product
for the ‘premium’ sector and
of supreme quality with respect
to the others, both in
the product and the packaging,”
says José Carlos Gómez,
commercial manager
of El Dulze. The company
has invested 12 millions of
euros in the last six years
to optimize their processes
and win in competitiveness
-varieties, production, handling,
automation, packaging,
… -.
The company assumed that
a ‘premium’ category is a
subject of niches and more
in a product especially ‘commodity’
as the lettuce, where
supermarket chains are using
it in their promotions
as a product accessible and
cheap. For this reason the
brand El Dulze is directed to
the wholesale segment and
the spanish grocery chain
where “there is a profile of
consumer willing to pay
more for a quality lettuce
with taste and consistency”
says Sánchez. Only Consum
is the only Spanish chain
that has the brand El Dulze.
Export. Spain has been
the reference market for El
Companies
Dulze, but six years ago it
began to export due to the
weakness of the Spanish
demand, bringing about a
change in the turnover.
In 2010-2011 the export was
a 20 percent of the income
and in 2011-2012 reached a
35 percent. “We were looking
for similar markets to the
spanish respect to the search
for quality brands by the
consumer, and France had
these features to begin in
the European market,” says
Sánchez.
The strategy of El Dulze at
international markets consist
of having a ‘partner’ by
destination “who knows the
market perfectly, because
our product is not made for
the majorities,” says Gómez.
In addition to France, the
products of El Dulze begin
to be important for Swiss
and German chains, which
include products with a
brand.
Lacour |
“Hemos sabido adaptarnos
para trabajar con la mayoría
de las cadenas de supermercados
que hay en Francia
en las referencias en las que
destacamos”, señala Antonio
Morales, director de Lacour.
Esta adaptabilidad responde
“al peso que tiene Perpignan
y el mercado de Saint Charles
para servir a las cadenas en
menos de 24 horas sus necesidades
inmediatas”, señala
Antoinette Monjauze, directora
comercial de Lacour.
“La plataforma de Saint
Charles ha sido visto como
un mercado de calidad estándar
pero es un centro logístico
ágil para cubrir las necesidades
de las cadenas”, apunta
Monjauze. Y sobre esta plataforma,
Lacour ha desarrollado
una línea de programas
con las cadenas, además del
servicio inmediato a demanda.
La estrategia le ha llevado a
sumar durante la campaña
2011-2012 un 12 por ciento
más de volumen de negocio
y alcanzar las 86.000 toneladas
comercializadas en el
último ejercicio.
La firma cuenta con un panel
de 18 comerciales especia-
lizados en diferentes áreas
de negocio, de los que cinco
corresponden a la línea de industria,
la última que ha incorporado
la empresa, lo que
supone una novedad en el
entorno de los importadores
del Sur de Francia.
Acciones. Además de su estrategia
en destino, Lacour ha
roto el monopolio España-
Marruecos en su cartera de
productos, y desarrolla importantes
programas de uva
italiana y diferentes productos
del Norte de Africa –Túnez
y Egipto-.
No obstante, “nuestra gama
fuerte de productos se centra
en la línea de hortícolas, uvas
y melón y sandía”, añade Morales.
El desarrollo empresarial de
Lacour va muy unido a la
penetración de la marca Pi-
colino en las cadenas de supermercados
y entre los mayoristas.
Hoy es una de las
marcas más presentes en los
lineales de las cadenas y con
un estándar alto de calidad.
Antonio Morales, manager Lacour.
The integration process
and business adaptation is
one of the keys of Lacour,
being one of the reference
in the French business of
fruit and vegetables.
Diversification is one of
the keys of the company,
which has allowed it to
have a 42 percent of the
business in retailers. The
rest is divided between
French wholesalers, the
export to the wholesale
and the industry, the only
department created by the
firm located in Perpignan.
“We’ve adapted to work
with the majority of supermarket
in France”, says
Antonio Morales, manager
of Lacour. This adaptation
Lacour |
Diversification of
business areas
diversification is a strategy, but for some
companies is a sign of identity. lacour
has opened all distribution networks
and the last one has been to open a
department for the industry.
is due to “the importance
of Perpignan and the Saint
Charles market to supply
to the chains in less than
24 hours”, says Antoinette
Monjauze, marketing manager
of Lacour.
“Saint Charles is seen as a
standard quality market but
is an efficient logistic center
that satisfies the chain
needs”, says Monjauze. Lacour
has developed a pro-
gram line with the chains,
in addition to the immediate
service depending on needs.
The company has had a 12
percent more of turnover
y marketed 86,000 tons in
2011-2012, due to the strategy
followed.
The company has a commercial
organization of 18
agents specialized in different
business areas, five
of which are specialized in
industry, which is a novelty
in the import sector in the
South of France.
Actions. In addition to its
strategy in destination, Lacour
has broken the Spain-
Morocco monopoly in its
portfolio of products, and develops
important programs
of Italian grape and different
products from North Africa
-Tunisia and Egypt-.
Companies
However, “our strong range
of products focuses on vegetables,
grapes, melon and
watermelon”, adds Morales.
The business development
of Lacour is linked to the introduction
of the brand Picolino
in supermarkets and
wholesalers. Today is one of
the brands more prevalent in
the supermarket shelves and
with a high quality standard.
referencia a nivel nacional e internacional.
Desde su fundación, hace
más de 20 años, la empresa
malagueña tuvo claro su
plan de expansión. Un plan
que se ve apoyado en el año
2002 con la inauguración de
sus nuevas y para entonces
amplias instalaciones donde
impulsan fuertemente su estrategia
comercial como profesional,
agresiva y continua
durante todo el año.
El objetivo fue romper con la
temporalidad tan acentuada
por las empresas españolas
de subtropicales en origen, y
ofrecer un producto de calidad
en las mejores condiciones
de maduración. El cliente
demandaba “un producto
a la carta” durante los doce
meses del año.
Esta idea la llevaba madurando
Juan Antonio Reyes,
fundador y actual gerente.
“Para nosotros trabajar los
subtropicales sólo durante
cuatro o cinco meses al año
lógicamente era insuficiente.
Al principio el productor era
reticente a dicha política pero
luego comprendió que era
necesario y beneficioso para
todos. En mis viajes por Europa
observé la importancia
de potenciar la actividad durante
los 12 meses del año suministrando
un producto de
calidad con el mejor servicio.
Por así decir, profesionalizamos
el sector acentuando una
especial atención a la calidad
organoléptica del producto y
a la maduración a la carta”.
El posicionamiento expansivo
responde a un incremento
de la productividad, fruto de
las constantes innovaciones
con técnicas de conservación,
de maduración, y de
calidad interna, que le ha
llevado en el ejercicio 2012
a disponer de una oferta de
más de 12.000 toneladas en
aguacates y mangos. En la
importación, con más de un
Juan Antonio Reyes, manager Reyes Gutiérrez.
60%, en volumen, es clave
en el entramado comercial
de la compañía, y es que el
abanico de los países de los
que se nutre es muy amplio
y completo.
“Hoy día podemos decir que
tenemos las mayores y mejores
empresas de referencia
en cada país productor; Perú,
Chile, Ecuador, México, Brasil
entre otros complementan
la oferta española de aguacates
de noviembre a abril, y de
agosto a noviembre en mangos”
comenta Reyes.
Evolución. La evolución en
la importación es notoria,
desde sus inicios a partir de
1997, pero es a partir del año
2002, coincidiendo con la inauguración
de las nuevas instalaciones,
cuando esta vía de
negocio empieza a obtener
un auge importante, contemplando
una oferta actual de
más de 7.000 toneladas procedentes,
principalmente de
Sudamérica. La continuidad
en el negocio le ha llevado a
situarse a primer nivel en las
cadenas de supermercados
españolas y europeas, además
multiplicar sus relaciones
con el mercado francés,
Several years ago, the company
from Malaga opened
an expansion plan that
began with a new facilities
to support an increase in
subtropical fruits. It had
an aggressive strategy and
a business continuity for
12 months, breaking the
seasonal campaigns that
had the companies in subtropical
fruits.
Juan Antonio Reyes,
founder of the company,
had studied this idea for
a long time, because “for
us, work a product as the
subtropical fruits for only
three months was insufficient.
Traveling around
Holland and Belgium,
among other countries, I
realized that the most important
thing for a company
is to have activity
for 12 months and, for it,
we need to have product
and customers all year
around”, explains Reyes.
The expansion on the
tegia también se encuentra
avalada con una apuesta por
la certificación y calidad con
un amplio panel de certificaciones.
Hay que tener en cuenta que
la compañía aún dispone de
capacidad para aumentar su
oferta.
Tecnología. La compañía ha
incorporado las tecnologías
más modernas y punteras
en sus instalaciones de más
de 23.000 m 2 de parcela que
cuentan con más de 6.000
metros de superficie dedicadas
en exclusiva al producto
subtropical. Están climatizadas
de manera integral
contando con más de 8.000
metros cúbicos de cámaras
frigoríficas de conservaciónmaduración
contando con la
1ª máquina en España, para
la detección del daño interno
que garantice la calidad y maduración
idónea de la fruta.
Estas instalaciones unidas al
esfuerzo por parte del equipo
humano que forma Reyes
Gutiérrez permiten ofrecer
un servicio personalizado
reforzando la posición de liderazgo
en el negocio de los
subtropicales.

increase the supply of overseas subtropical fruits
has led to reyes gutiérrez to have a continuity in
the market of the subtropical fruits. the company
has become in one of the reference suppliers of the
spanish and international markets.
markets mean an increase
in productivity. It is result
of the constant innovations,
reaching 12,000 tons
in 2012, where the import
(60 percent) is the business
key of the firm. The range of
the countries with whom it
works is wide: Peru, Chile,
Ecuador, Mexico and Brazil,
among other countries, supplementing
the supply from
Spain from November to
Evolution. The evolution in
the import is important.
From 1997 to 2001 this business
important increase, reaching
7,000 tons recently of import
the leading provider.
The company is a reference
to business continuity. In
addition, it has doubled its
relationship with the French
This strategy is supported
by a commitment with the
the most modern technologies
in its facilities which
have more than 23,000 m2.
Of which, 6,000 square metres
Especialización como clave
de crecimiento
esta firma granadina es en la actualidad el mayor productor y comercializador
de tomate tipo cherry con mÁs de 33.000 toneladas.
A lo largo de su trayectoria, la
cooperativa granadina Granada
La Palma, ha sabido
posicionarse como motor de
desarrollo económico y social
en la Costa de Granada,
haciendo de la investigación,
la experimentación con nuevas
variedades y fórmulas de
comercialización, y la mejora
de la calidad de vida de sus
socios y trabajadores sus señas
de identidad. Pionera y
siempre dispuesta a amoldarse
a estos tiempos de cambio
y feroz competencia
A la formación constante y la
comercialización directa de
los productos, primando la
exportación, hay que añadir
otro gran pilar de actuación:
la especialización. Partiendo
de una base productiva muy
pequeña, con solo 13 agricultores,
era indispensable
la búsqueda de productos
en los cuales los asociados
pudieran tener una ventaja
competitiva con respecto a
otras plataformas productivas.
Esta búsqueda constante
de estos cultivos diferenciales
les lleva a la introducción,
en la zona, de cultivos no tradicionales.
La introducción
del tomate cherry hace más
de 20 años supuso un cambio
progresivo en la empresa.
La importancia del producto
empezó a crecer desde el
mero exotismo o decoración
hasta ser un producto de consumo
más habitual en los lineales
de los supermercados
europeos. Al mismo tiempo
la empresa apuesta por este
cultivo hasta convertirse en
el producto principal de la
cooperativa.
Hoy en día la empresa la componen
unos 606 agricultores
y alrededor de 735 hectáreas,
con un caudal de oferta de superior
a las 56.000 toneladas.
“Donde todos los agricultores
están certificados según
los más altos estándares para
producir productos sanos y
con sabor”, afirma del Pino,
director general de Granada
La Palma.
Granada La Palma es la empresa
que más exporta de la
provincia de Granada y la
decimoquinta productora
David del Pino, general manager La Palma.
hortofrutícola más grande
España.
La empresa ha vivido un periodo
de crecimiento continuo
que le ha permitido
ser líder a escala mundial
en la producción y comercialización
de tomate cherry.
Además, “esta empresa
se enorgullece aún más de
su repercusión en el ámbito
en que nos movemos: 790
trabajadores y más de 3.500
familias beneficiándose directamente
del proyecto”,
apostilla del Pino.

Specialization as
a key to growth
currently, this company from granada is the
largest producer and trading company of cherry
tomato with more than 33,000 tons.
The cooperative Granada La
Palma is one of the engine
for the Coast of Granada’s
economic and social development.
Research and experimentation
with new varieties and
marketing formula, and the
improvement of the quality
of life for its members
and workers, are its signs of
identity. Pioneering and always
ready to adapt to times
of change and strong com-
In addition to constant
training, direct marketing
of products and export,
there is another great performance
pillar: the specialization.
Starting from a
small productive base, with
only 13 farmers, it was essential
to seek out products
where the partners could
have a competitive advantage
with respect to other
productive platforms.
This constant search for different
crops leads them to
introduce non-traditional
crops into the area. The introduction
of cherry tomato
more than 20 years was a
progressive change in the
company.
The importance of the product
began to grow from the
exoticism or decoration
to be a consumer product
more common in European
supermaket shelves. At the
Companies
same time the company
focuses on this crop to become
the main product of
the cooperative.
Today the company consist
of 606 farmers and around
735 hectares and more tha
56,000 tons. “Where all
the farmers are certified in
accordance with the highest
standards to produce
healthy with an exceptional
flavour”, says del Pino, director
of Granada La Palma.
Granada La Palma is the
largest exporter company in
Granada and the fifteenth
largest producer of fruits
and vegetables in Spain.
The company has experienced
a period of continuous
growth that has allowed
it to be world leader in production
and marketing of
cherry tomato. In addition,
“this company is proud of
his work: 790 workers and
more than 3,500 families
who benefit from the project”,
notes del Pino.
El negocio del oro rojo
La fresa es una de las categorías
“La empresa ha ido girando
hacia otra serie de productos
más específicos, que requieren
de una gestión más
profesional como la fresa”,
señala Pierre Magrit, director
comercial de Sofruce.
Desarrollo. La apuesta que
hace Sofruce por la fresa hace
que el 70 por ciento de sus
entradas de este producto finalicen
en cadenas de supermercados,
mientras que en el
resto de productos la cota de
penetración en cadenas sea
del 40 por ciento.
Sofruce mira sobre todo a
Francia, mercado que supone
más del 50 por ciento de sus
operaciones, pero la empresa
se encuentra en una fase de
internacionalización hacia
The strawberry is one of
the fruits where the price
is not so crucial to locate
the demand. Destinations
such as English or
French choose this fruit
and, unless the price rose
excessively, the demand
responds in a straight-line
basis.
Working the strawberry is
not easy, since it is one of
the most perishable products.
Sofruce is one of specialized
‘traders’ in strawberry,
and on this product
they have developed its
strategy.
The strawberry represents
a 35 percent of the volume
of Sofruce, but above
all is the showcase of the
company to run the business
activity toward other
categories, such as tomato
or citrus, reference which
was the major part of the
company when was born
“The company has worked
toward other more specific
mercados vírgenes para la
fresa.
El objetivo es la Europa del
Este, y aunque su primera experiencia
con la firma austriaca
Ströbl no ha terminado de
desarrollarse, la empresa ha
colocado los cimientos mediante
una plataforma logística
en Austria, “desde dónde
estamos desarrollando nuestro
esfuerzo comercial hacia
los mercados del Este de Europa”,
señala Magrit.
“Hemos conseguido un posicionamiento
en los mercados
del Este y seguiremos desarrollando
estos destinos en
los próximos años”, apunta
Magrit.
La apuesta por la fresa por
parte de Sofruce hace que
éste sea un producto presente
en el portfolio de la empresa
durante los 12 meses, ya que
desarrollan líneas de fresa con
productores de Perú en invierno,
Marruecos y España.
La empresa cuenta hoy con
una plataforma logística de
6.000 metros cuadrados, totalmente
refrigerada, desde
la que movió durante la campaña
pasada más de 65.000
toneladas.
Sofruce |
also an success insurance.
currently, sofruce is the
largest independent importer
of strawberry from france.
products which require a
more professional management,
as the strawberry”,
says Pierre Magrit, marketing
manager of Sofruce.
Development. The commitment
of Sofruce in strawberry
makes that a 70 percent of
this product reach the supermarket,
while in the rest of
products the share in super-
markets is a 40 percent.
Sofruce meets mainly to
France, market that is more
than 50 percent of its marketing,
but the company is
in an internationalization
phase toward virgin markets
for the strawberry.
The objective is Eastern Europe,
and although has not
finished to develop his first
experience with the Austri-
an company, Ströbl, the firm
has placed in Austria, “from
where we are working toward
the markets of Eastern
Europe”, says Magrit.
“We have achieved a position
in the eastern markets
and will continue to develop
these destinations in the
coming years”, notes Magrit.
The commitment of Sofruce
with the strawberry makes
Companies
this product be present in
the portfolio of the company
for 12 months, since
develops lines of strawberry
with producers from Peru in
winter, Morocco and Spain.
Currently, the company has
nichos y especialmente delicado
para trabajar en los
mercados internacionales de
1987: el calabacín.
El calabacín era uno de los
productos desconocidos en
Europa. Hasta 1995 no se superan
las 100.000 toneladas
exportadas y Hortofrutícola
Las Norias ya se posicionaba
con la marca Dribling, “un
nombre que surge tras la lectura
de un libro”, apunta Miguel
Angel Rubio, director de
la empresa.
La empresa se centró desde el
primer momento en una sola
referencia y en posicionarla
bajo una estrategia marquista
“evitando los fallos en los
programas firmados”, apunta
Rubio. Esta ha sido una de
las claves del desarrollo de
la empresa, la mayor productora
de calabacín de Europa
con un volumen de 36.000
toneladas de calabacín.
La empresa buscaba una relación
entre la marca y el
producto sin huir de los mercados
masivos, ya que el 80
por ciento de la oferta de la
empresa se dirige a las cadenas
europeas. La exportadora
fue desarrollando una marca
para los grandes programas
de los supermercados.
El servicio. “El servicio es
para nosotros tan importante
como la calidad del producto
a la hora de posicionarnos en
el mercado”, señala Rubio. La
estrategia de diferenciación
en servicio buscaba trabajar
con los mercados de valor
añadido y, por este motivo,
la empresa Dribling lidera la
cota de mercado de calabacín
en Reino Unido y supone el
25 por ciento de las ventas de
este producto en Suiza.
Gracias a la apuesta por hacer
volumen y mantener servicio
y calidad estándar del producto,
“nos hemos consolidado
en el supermercado de
referencia de cada destino
en donde trabajamos”,
señala Antonio Escobar,
administrador de
Hortofrutícola Las
Norias.
La empresa es suministrador
de
referencia en grupos como
Tesco en Reino Unido, Albert
Heijn en Holanda
o Carrefour
en Francia,
además de
posicio-
25 years ago the company
Hortofrutícola Las Norias
opened their doors to the
European market with a
product of niches and specially
delicate to work in
the international markets
of 1987: the courgette.
The courgette was one of
the unknown products in
Europe. Until 1995 is not
exceeded the 100,000 tons
exported and Hortofrutícolas
Las Norias is already
established with the brand
Dribling, “a name that
emerges after of reading
a book,” says Miguel Ángel
Rubio, president of the
company.
The company focused
in a reference from the
first moment and placed
it under a brand strategy
“avoiding the faults in the
programs signed,” says
Rubio. This has been one
of the keys to the development
of the company,
the largest producer of
courgette in Europe with
narse en los mercados nórdicos
y en Suiza. El siguiente
paso de desarrollo son los
mercados del Este de Europa,
aprovechando el peso que
empiezan a tener las cadenas
de capital europeo en estos
destinos.
Hortofrutícola Las Norias |
A brand of service
develop a strategy of brand without
flee the volume. this is the key of
hortofrutícola las norias, company
that is joined to the dynamic of the
brand without losing contact with the
consumer of supermarkets betting by
the service.
a volume of 36,000 tons of
courgette.
The company was looking
for a relationship between
the brand and the product
without flee the markets,
since a 80 percent of the
company’s supply is for European
chains. The exporter
company developed a brand
for the main supplies of the
supermarkets.
The service. “The service is
for us so important as the
quality of the product in the
market,” points out Rubio.
The strategy in the service
was looking for working
with the most important
markets and, for this reason,
the company Dribling
leads the market share of
courgette in UK and it is a 25
percent of the sales of this
product in Switzerland.
Thanks to make volume and
maintain a service and a
quality of the product, “we
have consolidated in the
supermarket of reference
where we work,” says Antonio
Escobar, manager of
Hortofrutícola Las Norias.
The company is bench mark
for groups such as Tesco in
UK, Albert Heijn in Holland
Companies
or Carrefour in France, in
addition to be in the nordic
markets and Switzerland.
The next step of development
are the markets of
Eastern Europe, taking advantage
of the importance
that begin to have the european
chains in these destinations.
Tranportes J. Cano |
Europa.
La evolución ha sido continúa,
desde que Juan Cano,
empezase como autónomo
en el año 1986 hasta que en
1991 constituyó la empresa
Transintercano, S.L.U con
cuatro camiones, comprando
el 50 por ciento de las acciones
a su antiguo socio.
A partir de entonces la empresa
ha tenido una proyección
de crecimiento, contando
en la actualidad con una
flota de 220 camiones, con
una renovación de los vehículos
cada 3-4 años. “De
esta forma, mantenemos una
flota moderna con toda la
tecnología más avanzada”,
apunta Cano.
Destinos. Los camiones desde
hace tiempo sólo contemplan
tres destinos: Bélgica,
Holanda y Alemania siempre
con mercancías hortofrutícolas
en los viajes de ida y en
retornos con productos de
electrónica y alimentación
mayoritariamente.
Y es que uno de los principales
puntos que garantizan
el éxito de Transportes J.
Cano es la perfecta relación
del binomio viaje-retorno.
De hecho, se garantizan más
de 300 cargas semanales de
frutas y hortalizas a toda
Europa con sus correspondientes
cargas en retorno, ya
que “la empresa se encuentra
perfectamente estructurada
en cuanto a la prestación de
servicios a nuestros clientes,
controlando en todo momento
los costes y optimizando
al máximo los viajes
con un nivel de retornos muy
elevado”, explica Cano.
Otra de las claves del desarrollo
de la empresa ha sido
la adaptación a las necesidades
de sus clientes, buscando
siempre el equilibrio entre
mejor servicio con el precio
más correcto.
La firma dispone de una central
ubicada en Antas (Almería),
a mitad de camino
entre Murcia y Almería y una
delegación estratégicamente
situada en Cardedeu, (Barcelona).
Hoy por hoy, la empresa ha
ampliado su flota, siendo la
mitad de sus vehículos dedicados
al grupaje de productos
hortofrutícolas, en
los denominados ‘camiones
bitemperatura’. Todos ellos
dotados con tecnología punta,
de hecho, Transportes
J.Cano fue pionero en Andalucía
en la instalación de
GPS.
Por último, “el factor humano
es muy importante para el
devenir de la empresa, ya que
es esencial rodearse de un
buen equipo de profesionales,
implicados y fieles, como
me han demostrado a lo largo
de muchos años”, explica
Ensure the return trip
the return trip is the key in the evolution of the company,
which has allowed it to be third in sales of andalusia.
Since it was founded in
1991, the firm has not
stopped growing in vehicles
and turnover and always
linked to the transport,
particularly fruits and
vegetables. The company
represents a 95 percent of
the product that leads from
the origin to three main
destinations in the center
of Europe.
Evolution has been continuous,
since Juan Cano
began as a self-employed in
1986 until 1994, when he
established the Transintercano
S.L.U company, with
four lorries, buying a 50
percent of the shares to its
former partner.
From that moment, the
company has grown and
currently has a fleet of 220
lorries, with a renewal of
vehicles every 3-4 years.
“In this way, we maintain a
modern fleet with the most
advanced technology”, says
Cano.
Destinations. Some time
ago, the lorries only have
three destinations: Belgium,
Holland and Germany,
always with fruits and
vegetables in one-way trips
and electronic products
and food in return trips.
One of the main points
that guarantee the success
of Transportes Cano is the
Juan Cano.
perfect relationship return
trip. In fact, the company
ensures more than 300
weekly loads of fruit and
Companies
vegetables to Europe with
their loads in a return trip,
since “the company is perfectly
structured with regard
to the purchase of raw
material due to the volume
of products. We control the
costs and optimize trips”,
explains Cano.
Another of the keys that
develops the company has
been the adaptation to
needs of customers, always
looking for the balance between
a best service with
the more correct price.
The company has a head office
located in Antas (Almería),
halfway between
Murcia and Almería and a
branch strategically located
in Cardedeu (Barcelona).
Today, the company has
expanded the fleet. Half
of the vehicles lead fruits
and vegetables and they
are called ‘bitemperature
lorries’. All of them have
cutting edge technology,
in fact, Transportes J. Cano
was a pioneer with the GPS
installation in Andalusia.
Finally, the staff is very important
for the future of
the company. In fact, more
than 450 workers ensure
the right running of Transportes
Agrobío |
Tiempo récord
agrobio es hoy un referente internacional
en el negocio del control
biológico, y todo en un tiempo record.
investigación, recursos humanos
y mucho esfuerzo son sus
principales argumentos de crecimiento.
Tiempo record. Con estas
dos palabras se puede definir
la evolución que ha tenido
esta firma almeriense
para con el negocio del control
biológico. Y es que Agrobío
ha realizado una fuerte
apuesta por el desarrollo de
una nueva línea de productos
para el control integrado
de plagas. De hecho, hasta
hace bien poco, esta firma
era conocida por la comercialización
de abejorros
para la polinización natural,
mientras que la actualidad,
cuenta con numerosos productos
para la lucha biológica
contra las plagas.
A través de Agrocontrol, esta
empresa comercializa Amblyseius
swirskii, Orius laevigatus,
Nesidiocoris tenuis,
Nabis pseudoferus ibericus
y plantas reservorias, entre
otros productos.
Inversión. Otro de los aspectos
fuertes de la firma es que
la inversión en investigación
es una constante. “En nuestro
caso contamos con unos
recursos humanos y de investigación
que nos permiten
estar en vanguardia en
materia de fauna auxiliar
para controlar las plagas que
afectan a los diferentes cultivos,
tanto hortícolas como
frutícolas”, apunta José Antonio
Santorromán, gerente
de la empresa. Prueba de
ello, es que uno de los puntos
que la firma potencia es
el uso de Nesidiocoris tenuis
en semillero y campo para
controlar la mosca y la Tuta
absoluta en la suelta de tomate.
Además, la firma sigue está
realizando un trabajo de investigación,
desarrollando
nuevos protocolos de sueltas
en pepino para que el resultado
sea el más óptimo.
Estos nuevos avances son
fruto de los diferentes programas
de investigación que
lleva a cabo Agrobío con el
Instituto de Investigación y
Formación Agraria de la Junta
de Andalucía (Ifapa).
Respecto a la estrategia de
expansión como empresa
que se dedican a la producción
y comercialización de
fauna beneficiosa. Santorromán
destaca la ventaja que
tiene Agrobío con respecto
a otras firmas. “Agrobío se
trata de una firma almeriense
y nosotros siempre hemos
tenido como objetivo prefe-
rente el mercado de Almería.
Es decir, nunca hemos
pretendido salir de esta zona
sin afianzarnos antes en dicho
mercado, aunque eso no
signifique que Agrobío no
se de a conocer a nivel internacional”,
explica Santorro-
José Antonio Santorromán,
gerente de Agrobio.
mán. De hecho, ya opera en
más de una decena de países
entre Europa, Africa y Sudamérica.
Agrobío |
Record time
today, agrobío is an international bench mark in
biological control in a record time. research, human
resources and effort are the main points of growth.
Record time. With these
two words is defined the
development of this company
from Almería with the
biological control.
Agrobío has made a strong
commitment in developing
of a new line of products
for integrated pest management.
In fact, until recently,
this company was known
by marketing of bumblebees
for natural pollination,
while currently, it has
numerous products for biological
pest control.
Through Agrocontrol, this
company sells Amblyseius
swirskii, Orius laevigatus,
Nesidiocoris tenuis, Nabis
pseudoferus ibericus and
‘plantas reservorias’, among
other products.
Investment. Another
strength of the company
is a constant investment
in research. “In our case
we have human resources
and research that allows
us to be in the vanguard in
auxiliary fauna in order to
control pests which affect
the different crops, horticulture
and fruit”, says José
Antonio, manager of the
company.
The company promotes the
use of Nesidiocoris tenuis
in seedbed and field to control
whitefly and Tuta absoluta
in tomato. In addition,
the company is making a
research work and develop
new protocols in cucumber
in order to get the best results.
These new developments
are the result of differents
research programs carried
out by Agrobío with the
Institute for Research and
Training in Agriculture of
Junta de Andalucía (Ifapa).
With regard to expansion
strategy as a company that
is dedicated to the production
and marketing of beneficial
fauna, Santorromán
stands out the advantage
of Agrobío with respect to
other firms. “Agrobío is a
company from Almería and
we have always had as pri-
Companies
mary objective the market
of Almería”.
In other words, we have
never sought out to go out
of this area without consolidate
our position in the
market. It does not mean
that Agrobío is not known
to international level,” explains
Santorromán. In
fact, the company already
operates in more than a
dozen countries between
Europe, Africa and South
America.
Especialización en un
producto
subasta. Y es que Casi se ha
consolidado internacionalmente
gracias, en parte, a su
sistema de subasta en origen
siguiendo un modelo original
que se puede considerar
marca de la casa: la confección
y envasado por parte
de los socios en sus instalaciones
particulares, el transporte
también individual y la
subasta en las dependencias
de la entidad, un modelo
idóneo en este ámbito por la
generación de valor añadido,
por la flexibilidad ante situaciones
cambiantes y por su
adaptación a las característi-
cas de las explotaciones agrícolas
de los socios.
Un elemento clave, que lo
puso en marcha la actual
Junta Rectora, presidida por
José María Andújar. Con una
duración de cuatro años, es
el objetivo es modernizar
y optimizar la producción,
gestión y comercialización.
Se están analizando todas
las áreas, para ajustar costes,
ser más eficientes e innovar
en aquellos aspectos que sea
posible, de cara a seguir liderando
el mercado del tomate
en el futuro.
Otro punto importante es la
diversificación de la oferta
en los tres centros: la subasta
y las comercializadoras de
San Isidro y Los Partidores,
logrando un equilibro entre
los dos centros de comercialización
y la subasta. De hecho,
cuando llegó la actual a
Junta Rectora, la mayoría del
tomate se vendía en la subasta,
donde los precios son más
bajos. Ahora se ha conseguido
que se repartan las ventas
entre los tres centros, con
venta en subasta y venta di-
At present, it provides
a volume that exceeds
220,000 tons (95 percent
is tomato), although it has
other working lines for the
spring, such as watermelon
and, to a lesser extent,
melon.
The main activity of the
company is the sale of
products of the partners
through the auction.
Casi has been consolidated
internationally thanks to
the auction in origin following
an original model
of the company: packaging
of the product by the partners
in their own facilities,
individual transportation
and auction on the firm facilities.
It offers a suitable
model of added value, due
to the flexibility and adaptation
to the partners.
A key element sets up by
the board of directors,
chaired by José María
Andújar. The aim is to
modernize and optimize
the production, management
and marketing. It is
being analyzed all areas to
adjust cost, be more efficient
and innovate on neccesary
aspects in order to
recta, lo que ayuda a mejorar
los precios.
Con el paso de los años la
firma ha sabido adoptar
medidas para ajustarse a las
exigencias de un mercado
cada vez más competitivo,
y en este sentido destacan
acciones importantes como
la introducción de nuevos
envases, mayores exigencias
en la normalización del producto
y crecientes controles
de calidad. Por su parte, los
agricultores de Casi también
contribuyeron con la
introducción de mejoras en
los sistemas de cultivo y de
nuevas variedades de tomate,
más resistentes al transporte
y más homogéneas en su presentación,
que en conjunto
permitieron la sinergia entre
las actividades de producción
y de comercialización.
La empresa trabaja continuamente
en la apertura de nuevos
mercados de destino y en
la potenciación del marco internacional
y hoy ya opera en
más de 20 países.

Another important point
is the diversification of the
way, it achieves a balance
Now, the sales are distrib-
Sica AgriQ |
desarrollar acreditaciones,
ampliar las matrices a todas
las familias hortofrutícolas
y mejorar la calidad y el servicio
de los resultados a la
clientela.
Fue a partir de septiembre
de 2008 cuando la firma se
abrió al mercado, creando un
departamento comercial de
la mano del profesional Francisco
García y lanzando una
estrategia de comunicación
amplia con dos objetivos:
“darnos a conocer rápidamente
en el mercado y estar
al día de lo que ocurre en el
sector. Es fundamental saber
los movimientos que sacuden
al sector”, señala Antonio
Belmonte.
El paso definitivo fue intensificar
las acciones en lograr
el certificado QS, que por
aquel entonces sólo lo disponía
un laboratorio, y era una
demanda de las cadenas y
clientes alemanes. “La certificación
QS lograda a finales
de 2008 nos supuso el primer
incremento de negocio
y suma de nuevos clientes”,
añade Belmonte.
Relaciones. Las relaciones de
Sica AgriQ no sólo se concentraron
en el marco del
origen, sino en el marco del
destino. La empresa creó un
departamento para mantener
relaciones con las cadenas y
clientes alemanes, “manteniendo
una línea abierta de
comunicación”, apunta el
ejecutivo.
Sobre la base anterior, la firma
empezó en 2009 su estrategia
de expansión fuera
de Almería, abordando el
mercado de Murcia y posteriormente
el de Andalucía
Occidental.
Esta expansión se hizo no
sólo de la mano del certificado
QS y la mejora de los
procesos productivos, sino
que la empresa invirtió en la
mejora de la presentación de
los resultados mediante medios
web diferenciadores con
respecto a la competencia.
Hoy la empresa ha iniciado
su desarrollo comercial por el
levante español y se encuentra
en el ‘Top Five’ de los laboratorios
multiresiduos de
España. La empresa cuenta
con un departamento comercial
compuesta por cuatro
profesionales. La empresa vio
en 2011 con la explosión del
Etephon un fuerte desarrollo
comercial –se realizaron
10.000 análisis de Etephon- y
se dobló el volumen de negocio
y durante 2012 “hemos
mantenido la clientela y el
volumen de negocio sin haber
saltado ninguna alerta”,
recuerda Belmonte.
Francisco García (left) commercial manager and Antonio Belmonte, general manager of Sica AgriQ.
When Antonio Belmonte
became the manager of
the multi-residue laboratory
Sica in 2007 by the
Dutch company BLGG, the
first decision that took was
atypical: do not go out to
the market until improved
the machinery of a laboratory
that was already in
the market.
There were seven months
-from December 2007 to
August 2008- where the
technical team worked to
develop accreditations,
scope of products to all the
fruits and vegetables families
and improve the quality
and the service to the
customers.
From September 2008
the company, located in
Andalusia, was opened
to the market, creating a
commercial department
with Francisco García and
a communication strategy
with two objectives:
“make ourselves know in
the market quickly to be
up to date about what’s
happening in the sector.
It is essential to know the
movements in the fruit
and vegetables sector”,
says Belmonte.
The final step was to intensify
the actions to
achieve the QS certificate,
which only had a laboratory
at that time, and it
was a demand for the German
‘retailers’. “The QS
certification achieved at
the end of 2008 meant the
first increase in business
and new customers,” adds

the development of the laboratory sica agriq
is based in a work from the improvement of all
processes for after beginning an expansive phase
supported from marketing.
Antonio Belmonte.
Relationships. The Sica AgriQ
relations not only were
concentrated in origin, but
in destination. The company
created a department to
maintain relationships with
the chains and German customers,
“keeping an open
line of communication,”
says the executive.
The company started its expansion
strategy outside of
Almeria in 2009, addressing
the market of Murcia and
subsequently Western Andalusia.
This expansion was done
not only by the QS certificate
and the improvement
of production processes, but
that the company invested
in improving the results via
web, distinguishing itself
with respect to the competition.
Nowadays, the company has
started its commercial development
by the east coast
of Spain and is in the ‘Top
Companies
Five’ of the multi-residue
laboratories of Spain. The
company has a commercial
department with four professionals.
The company saw a strong
commercial development
with the Ethephon in 2011
-there were 10,000 analysis
of Ethephon - and doubled
the turnover and during
2012 “we have kept the customers
and the volume of
business without having
alerts”, recalls Belmonte.
Koppert |
Fuerte en I+D
soluciones biológicas a casi
todas las plagas de cultivos
hortícolas, ornamentales y
frutales, entre otros.
Durante todos estos años
Koppert ha acumulado una
experiencia difícil de alcanzar,
investigando, desarrollando
y produciendo
nuevos depredadores más
eficaces y mejor adaptados
a las condiciones del sureste
español. De hecho, uno
de sus principales logros fue
el Swirskii, un depredador
generalista muy importante
para los cultivos, que puede
combatir distintas plagas
(mosca blanca, trips, araña
roja, etcétera.) “Gracias
al Swirskii Almería pudo
realizar un salto al control
biológico en el año 2007,
que en otro caso no hubiera
sido posible”, explica Kris de
Smet director comercial de
Koppert España.
Kris de Smet,
commercial manager
Koppert España.
Otro de las investigaciones
de Koppert, para afrontar la
plaga de la Tuta en tomate,
se basó adelantar en varias
semanas la suelta del nesidiocoris
para que se instalen
mucho mejor.
En la misma línea, en pepino
ha desarrollado el nuevo sobre
de Swirski-Mite LD (larga
duración) para resolver
la bajada de actividad de los
sobres de Amblyseius swirskii
después de tres o cuatro
semanas colocados en el
cultivo. Y es que, los ácaros
de swirskii que habían salido
del sobre, se dispersaban
sobre las hojas de la planta,
pero por falta de comida,
aplicaciones de fungicidas, y
el frío, perdían efectividad.
La única solución, hasta ese
momento, era la recolocación
de nuevos sobres.
Además, sigue trabajando en
el programa NaturGro ini-
ciado en 2010, un nuevo enfoque
del control biológico
de los cultivos, que se basa
en la aplicación de productos
en la zona aérea y subterránea
de la planta.
La firma cuenta en España
con unas instalaciones de
producción con alta tecnología
ubicada en Águilas –
Murcia-, consistente en un
nuevo invernadero de 4.000
metros cuadrados de superficie
tipo QLS. En dicho
invernadero se llegan a producir
2.500 millones de insectos
beneficiosos anuales.
Y es que para esta firma el
negocio que se genera en España
es muy importante, ya
que el 18 por ciento de la facturación
de esta multinacional
se produce en este país,
aproximadamente unos 19
millones de euros.
Koppert has been in the
market for 46 years at
global level and for more
than ten years in the Spanish
market, providing
biological solutions in almost
all pests of vegetable
crops, ornamental plants
and fruit trees, among others.
During these years, Koppert
has accumulated an
experience difficult to
achieve, researching, developing
and producing
new predators more effective
and better adapted to
conditions of southeast of
Spain.
In fact, one of the main
achievements was Swirskii,
a generalist predator
very important for crops,
because it can combat
different pests (whitefly,
thrips, red spider, and so
on.) “Thanks to Swirskii,
Almería could make a
leap to the IPM in 2007.
In another case it would

the ongoing reseach and
continuous production of
beneficials and pollinators make
this company a benchmark in this
agricultural sector around the
world.
not have been possible”, explains
Kris De Smet, marketing
manager of Koppert
Spain.
Another research of Koppert
to combat Tuta in tomato
consisted on advance in several
weeks the Nesidiocoris
introduction in order to install
them much better.
In cucumber has developed
the new Swirski-Mite LD
(long term) to resolve the
lowering activity of Amblyseius
swirskii after three
or four weeks placed in the
crop.
Swirskii who had left the
envelope were dispersed on
the leaves of the plant, but
because of lack food, fungicides,
and cold, they lost
effectiveness. The only solution,
until that time, was the
relocation of new envelopes.
In addition, the company
continues working on the
NaturGro program initiated
in 2010, a new approach of
the IPM, which is based on
the use of products in the
higher and lower area of the
crop.
In Spain, the company has
facilities with high technology
located in Águilas
-Murcia-. It consist on a
new greenhouse of 4,000
square meters, QLS type. In
Companies
the greenhouse is produced
2,500 millions of beneficial
insects every year.
For this company, the business
generated in Spain is
very important, because a
18 percent of the turnover
occurs in this country, approximately
19 millions of
euros.
Frutas Patricia Pilar |
Las puertas de la
globalización de la
mano de la producción
esta firma ha desarrollado su proceso de globalización
desde la inversión en producción propia. hoy
cuentan con plantaciones en cuatro países y desarrollan
acciones comerciales en ocho destinos de dos
continentes.
El proceso de internacionalización
de la empresa no es
nuevo pero no todos los modelos
se hacen de la mano de
la producción. Es el caso de
la portuguesa Frutas Patricia
Pilar que desarrolla sus acciones
comerciales en ocho
destinos contando con producciones
directas en cuatro
áreas productivas.
Sobre este complejo modelo,
la firma portuguesa ha
desarrollado un modelo de
negocio que le permite manejar
hoy sobre las 50.000
toneladas de producto y ser
la tercera firma de la actividad
hortofrutícola en Portugal
en volumen de negocio
y la primera en operaciones
con España.
El inicio de Frutas Patricia
Pilar tiene lugar hace 20
años en Torres Vedras (Portugal)
con el negocio import
de procedencia española en
el 80 por ciento de los casos
para empezar en 2009
a desarrollar acciones con
productores de Portugal –
área de Torres Vedras- con
la creación de una subasta
“con el objetivo de concentrar
la oferta productiva y
poder desarrollar programas
comerciales”, señala Emilio
Lloret, responsable área comercial
de la empresa.
Oferta. El control de la oferta
se convertía en la estrategia
de la firma portuguesa y
por este motivo inició programas
de melón en Murcia
(España), estableció una
plataforma en Almería (Es-
paña) para acaparar oferta
de hortalizas en los meses de
invierno, desarrolló programas
de judía en Marruecos
y adquirió 60 hectáreas de
manzanos en Midy-Pirenees
(Francia).
Tras esta estrategia de control
de la producción, la firma,
además de la actividad
comercial en España y Portugal,
empezaba su desarrollo
en la Europa del Este
en la campaña pasada. “De
hecho, los incrementos comerciales
alcanzados en la
campaña pasada se deben al
incremento de exportaciones
a España y Europa del
Este, donde pretendemos
incrementar nuestra cartera
de clientes”, señala Patricia
Pilar Lloret, directora financiera
de la empresa.
“La estrategia de trabajar con
producción propia ha sido
clave para el desarrollo posterior
comercial que hemos
tenido”, apunta la familia
Lloret Carmona.
El siguiente paso de la firma
pasa por abordar el mercado
sudamericano de la mano
de la pera Rocha. La firma
cuenta con producciones de
pera Rocha en Portugal y ha
iniciado contactos con clientes
de Argentina y Brasil. El
último desarrollo puesto en
marcha por Frutas Patricia
It is not new the internationalization
process of
the company, but not all
models are made from the
production. The Portuguese
company, Frutas Patricia
Pillar, has developed
their business activity in
eight destinations and has
a direct production in four
productive areas.
On the basis of this model,
the Portuguese firm
has developed a business
model to get 50.000 tons
of product and is the third
company in turnover with
a fruit and vegetable activity
in Portugal and it is the
first one in business operations
with Spain.
Frutas Patricia Pilar began
20 years ago in Torres Vedras
(Portugal) with imports
from Spain in a 80
percent. In 2009 started
working with producers
of Portugal -from Torres
Pilar pasa por analizar el
comportamiento de variedades
hortícolas para Portugal
y cuenta con dos hectáreas
de invernaderos para I+D,
que gestiona la sociedad
Supply. The control of the
supply became the strategy
of the Portuguese company.
For this reason, it started to
work wiht melon from Murcia
to work with the vegetables
fuerte de vog es el cuidado de su marca marlene para
el gran consumo.
La firma italiana VOG es un
ejemplo de concentración de
la oferta y de apuesta por el
marquismo a nivel de gran
consumo. La concentración
de la oferta se produce el 24
de agosto de 1945, cuando
nueve pequeñas cooperativas
productoras de manzanas
y ubicadas en el Norte
de Italia deciden unir su esfuerzo
comercialmente para
posicionarse en el negocio
de la manzana.
Ya en 1945 “éramos la mayor
empresa productora de
manzanas en Europa”, apunta
Georg Kössler, presidente
del consorcio VOG.
Hoy son 16 las cooperativas
pertenecientes a VOG con
una masa de productores
que superan los 5.000 y una
comercialización que superó
las 660.000 toneladas en el
ejercicio 2011-2012.
Pero la clave del éxito de
VOG no es su volumen sino
“la aplicación de una estrate-
gia de marca eficaz en todos
los contextos”, señala Gerhard
Dichgans, director de
VOG.
Esta estrategia de marca va
apoyada “en la calidad de
las manzanas que se da en
el Alto Adige, en la amplitud
varietal y en la innovación
varietal”, señala Dichgans.
Resultados de valor. El consorcio
VOG tiene en Marlene
su marca de referencia,
pero participa activamente
en clubs como Pink Lady,
Rubens o Kanzi. Esta estrategia
de marca, apoyada en
campañas de marketing, les
supuso en el ejercicio 2010-
2011 incrementar su facturación
en un 23 por ciento
-443 millones de euros-,
habiendo comercializado
un 10 por ciento menos de
manzanas.
El desarrollo de marketing
no sólo se vincula a una estrategia
de promociones y
Gerhard Dichgans, manager VOG.
publicidad, sino va ligado
a una nueva estrategia comercial
iniciada hace dos
años donde se armoniza las
reglas de clasificación y selección
de los frutos desde
un departamento comercial
único, “huyendo de nuestra
complejidad interna y controlando
mejor los costes”,
apunta Dichgans.
Esta estrategia comercial se
vincula al proceso de internacionalización
de la marca
Marlene. Hoy Italia supone
el 55 por ciento de las ventas
de VOG, pero esta penetración
va descendiendo a favor
de otros destinos del Norte
de Europa y del área mediterránea,
“un consumidor más
marquista que el centroeuropeo”,
aclara Dichgans.
Es por este motivo que VOG
va a seguir desarrollando el
mercado español -25.000 toneladas-
y desde la campaña
pasada Marruecos y el Norte
de Africa.
The value
of the brand
more than 5,000 producers, 660,000
tons marketed, more than 15 varieties of
apples. but the most important aspect of
vog is the care of the brand marlene for
the mass consumption.
ported “in the quality of
apples of Alto Adige, in the
varietal innovation”, says Dichgans.
Results of value. Marlene is
the reference brand for Consortium
VOG, but participates
in clubs such as Pink
Lady, Rubens or Kanzi. This
brand strategy, supported by
marketing campaigns, gave
them in 2010-2011 an in-
crease of turnover by 23 percent
-443 millions of euros-,
having sold a 10 percent less
of apples.
The development of marketing
is not only linked to a
strategy of advertising, but is
linked to a new commercial
strategy that began two years
ago in order to classify and
choose the fruit from a commercial
department, “we
move away from a compli-
cated internal structure thus
we control better costs”, says
Dichgans.
This business strategy is
linked to the process of internationalization
of Marlene.
Currently, Italy means
a 55 percent of VOG sales,
but this is decreasing in favour
of other destinations of
the North of Europe and the
Mediterranean area, “a consumer
who likes the brands
Companies
more than central European
consumer”, says Dichgans.
For this reason, VOG will
continue to develop the
spanish market -25,000 tons
- and since the last campaign
Morocco and North Africa.
Thanks to the financial capacity
of the company, VOG
has new objectives in brand
markets and of value, and for
this reason look at Russia and
the next objective is India.
nuevos objetivos. Sin embargo,
no es el caso de la
comercializadora riojana
Frutas Solano, que está dispuesto
a dar a conocer en
toda España y en el mercado
internacional las bondades
de los productos de la huerta
riojana y navarra en fresco,
ya que de estas regiones españolas
son muy conocidos
sus productos para industria
(espárragos, alcachofa y pimientos)
y no tanto los que
se destinan al consumo en
fresco.
Para ello, y apoyado en la
experiencia en el sector que
le confiere, Frutas Solano
de Calahorra (La Rioja), ha
dado el salto para diferenciarse
de la competencia y
ha creado recientemente la
industria Solano Logística
Frigorífica, que cuenta con
unas instalaciones de 8.500
metros cuadrados de superficie
ubicados en el polígono
industrial de Andosilla (Navarra)
lugar fronterizo con la
provincia de La Rioja. La inversión
total se cifra en siete
millones de euros y permite
la creación de aproximadamente
una decena de nuevos
puestos de trabajo.
Desarrollo. De hecho, gracias
a estas nuevas instalaciones
va a ampliar cartera de productos,
incrementando su
volumen, de esta forma, le
permitirá abordar nuevos
destinos internaciones, donde
no llega su competencia.
José Solano, gerente de la
firma, explica que en las
nuevas instalaciones se aplicarán
las nuevas tecnologías
en un trabajo tradicional, el
del almacenamiento, conservación
y distribución de
frutas y hortalizas.
Las instalaciones cuentan
con dos muelles de descarga
del producto sucio y una
nave de entrada de 1.000
metros cuadrados. Además,
existen cinco cámaras frigoríficas
con capacidad hasta
de 2.500 toneladas, de las
que cuatro son de atmósfera
controlada,
La nueva nave tiene 750 metros
cuadrados de oficinas,
una sala de formación para
los empleados y una sala de
juntas.

Invest in new facilities
the return trip is the key in the evolution of the company,
which has allowed it to be third in sales of andalusia.
In a region that does not
stands out for its production
in fresh, this company
from La Rioja has recently
invested seven millions of
euros to increase its portfolio
of customer and enter
new markets.
With the economic crisis it
is difficult to find companies
that have the enough
courage to invest in new
objectives. However, this
is not the case of Frutas
Solano, who is willing to
make know in Spain and
in the international market
the fresh fruits and vegetables
from La Rioja and Navarra.
Of these Spanish regions
are well known their products
for industry (asparagus,
artichoke, and peppers)
and not so much the
products for fresh consumption.
Frutas Solano of Calahorra
(La Rioja), has made the
leap to differentiate itself
from other companies and
has recently created the
company Solano Logística
Frigorífica, which has facilities
with 8,500 square
meters of surface located in
the industrial estate of Andosilla
(Navarra), a place
bordering to La Rioja.
The total investment is estimated
at seven millions
of euros and allows the
creation of approximately a
dozen new jobs.
Development. In fact,
thanks to these new facilities
is going to expand the
portfolio of customers, increasing
its volume. In this
José Solano, manager Frutas Solano.
way, it will enable to enter
new international markets,
where do not reach other
companies.
José Solano, manager of
the firm, explains that in
the new facilities will have
new technologies in a traditional
work, storage, conservation
and distribution
of fruit and vegetables.
The facilities have two
Companies
unloading docks of dirty
product and a warehouse
of entry with 1,000 square
meters. In addition, there
are five cold stores with capacity
to 2,500 tons, four
of which are controlled atmosphere.
The new warehouse
has 750 square meters
of offices, a training
room for employees and a
board room.
Asprocan |
Unidos en la
defensa del
sector platanero
canario
importantes logros,
como viene refrendado por
la estabilidad del número
de productores y los niveles
de producción, pues pese a
tratarse de un cultivo centrado
en explotaciones de
pequeño tamaño, Plátano
de Canarias ha generado la
estabilidad necesaria para
ser tenido en cuenta en el
mercado.
Para llegar a estos objetivos,
Asprocan ha apostado por
trasladar un mensaje homogéneo
en todo lo relativo a
la defensa de los productores
frente a la cada vez más
dura competencia de países
terceros. En este caso, aspectos
que encarecen la producción,
como son las propias
características y cuidados
que exige el cultivo, unido al
cumplimiento de los requisitos
fitosanitarios exigidos
por la Unión Europea y el
respeto al medioambiente y
la garantía de los derechos
sociales de sus trabajadores,
se han convertido en elementos
que además de la calidad,
diferencian la producción
platanera canaria del
resto de los competidores.
La unidad de los productores
a través de Asprocan ha contribuido
a evitar conflictos
que pudiesen perjudicar al
sector en general y a evitar
especulaciones entre los propios
productores. Al contrario,
el actual posicionamiento
del sector ha venido de
la mano del esfuerzo hecho
por los productores por invertir
en su futuro mediante
acciones colectiva, como por
ejemplo, la puesta en marcha
de la marca colectiva
Plátano de Canarias, que se
ha transformado en una Indicación
Geográfica Protegida
en España y que ha sido
sustentada en el desarrollo
de importantes campañas
de comunicación e información.
En este último punto, Asprocan
viene desarrollando
iniciativas desde 1993,
apostando por un mensaje
que permita al consumidor
conocer las bondades del
plátano de Canarias y con el
que se ha dejado patente aspectos
clave como su aportación
energética, su peculiar
apariencia, su sabor característico
y, en definitiva, su
calidad, que le diferencia del
resto.
Asprocan |
United in the defense of
platano from the Canaries
Since its inception, the Association
of Organisations
of Platano Producer of the
Canary Islands (Asprocan)
has worked hard to defend
the sector’s interests in the
market and the institutions,
a priority goal that
has allowed the consolidation
of the company over
the years.
The commitment for the
union of platano producers
from the Canary Islands
has helped to Asprocan to
be recognized in Spain, In
addition, it is recognized as
a model example for other
agricultural sub-sectors.
All of this has made possible
to achieve significant
achievements. It is due to
the stability of producers
and the level production,
because despite of being a
crop focused on small-sized
farms, Plátano de Canarias
has the stability necessary
to be taken into account in
the market.
To achieve these goals, Asprocan
has sent a homogeneous
message respect to
the defense of producers
against the increasingly
competitive situation from
third countries.
In this case, the aspects
that have made a production
more expensive, such
as crop care, respect for
the environment, phytosanitary
requirements
Companies
asprocan undertakes with a message which allows consumers
to know the advantages of platano from the canary islands
with key aspects which make the different them from the rest.
Santiago Rodríguez, chairman Asprocan.
demanded by the European
Union and social rights of
its workers, are elements
which make different platano
production from the
rest of the competitors.
The producers through Asprocan,
has avoided conflicts
that might harm the
sector and to avoid speculations
among the producers.
The sector is the result
of an effort of producers
to invest in their future
through joint actions, such
as, the implementation of
the brand Platano de Canarias,
which is a Protected
Geographical Indication in
Spain and it has been supported
by important communication
and information
campaigns.
Since 1993, Asprocan develops
initiatives that inform
the consumer about
the benefits of Plátano de
Canarias, key issues such as
energy intake, peculiar appearance,
their characteristic
flavour and, ultimately,
its quality, that sets it apart
from the rest.
Invertir para
destinos
la mayor productora de fruta en
fresco de espaÑa sigue invirtiendo
en tecnología para abordar nuevos
mercados donde no llega su
competencia. sudamérica y el mercado
asiÁtico son claros ejemplos.
La expansión y el crecimiento
de Actel en los últimos años
están siendo muy significativos.
Con el sector primario
como base, la firma ilerdense
está desarrollando un proyecto
empresarial de gran
magnitud. De hecho, trabaja
su estrategia de la vía export
con el objeto de convertirse
en una nueva estructura comercial
fuera de España.
Para ello, Actel está buscando
nuevos socios para abrir
nuevos mercados internacionales
donde enviar género
como Sudáfrica (exportación
de cítricos) o la India,
“un mercado emergente que
está reclamando productos
de calidad, donde ya están
posicionando las grandes superficies
y que cuenta con un
20 por ciento de la población
con un gran poder adquisitivo
y que están dispuestos
a pagar un precio razonable
por un producto de calidad”,
explica Josep Lluis Trilla, director
comercial y marketing
de Grupo Actel.
Export. La firma exporta el 75
por ciento de la producción
principalmente en Europa,
con tres países que lideran su
ránking de negocio (Rusia,
Polonia y Alemania), pero
la firma ha dado un paso
más hacia otros mercados
de ultramar. “Hemos abierto
nuevas estrategias hacia mercados
como Brasil, en el que
empezamos a trabajar hace
tres campañas enviando fruta.
El año pasado la firma invirtió
dos millones de euros
en la fábrica, porque “para
llegar a determinadas zonas
del globo debe estar condicionada
al frío de una forma
diferente que si se quiere
exportar a países cercanos”,
apunta Trilla.
Para ello, la firma ha instalado
dos túneles de frío y una
nueva cámara de refrigeración
para bajar la temperatura
del corazón de la fruta a
cero grados en ocho, y poder
transportarla a esta temperatura
hasta que desembarque
en destino en perfectas condiciones.
Son inversiones necesarias
para abastecer nuevos
mercados como Brasil,
como Singapur e Indonesia,
con los que la firma ya ha
empezado a trabajar el pasado
verano.
Y es que Actel cuenta con
personal propio, que está
trabajando el mercado Arabe,
y Asia, siendo el objetivo
principal penetrar en dichos
mercados. De hecho, “nos
presentamos como una estructura
de exportación para
estas latitudes”, apunta Trilla.
La cooperativa ya distribuye
a estas zonas cebolla, granadas
de Elche o cítricos y
prepara acuerdos con la I.G.P
Poma de Girona en el caso de
las partidas de manzana.
Josep Lluis Trilla,
director comercial y
Actel.
Grupo Actel |
Invest in order to achieve
new destinations
The expansion and growth
of Actel in recent years are
very significant. With the
primary sector on the basis,
the firm from Lérida is developing
a business project
of great magnitude. In fact,
it works its export strategy
in order to become a new
business structure outside
Spain.
For this reason, Actel is
looking for new partners
to open up new international
markets where send
products, as South Africa
(export of citrus) or India,
“a rapidly growing market
that is demanding quality
products. This country has
a 20 percent of the population
with a high purchasing
power and they are willing
to pay a reasonable price for
a quality product”, explains
Josep Lluis Trilla, marketing
manager of Grupo Actel.
Export. The company exports
a 75 percent of the
production to Europe. Three
countries lead the business
ranking (Russia, Poland
and Germany), but the
company has taken an important
step towards other
overseas markets.”We have
opened up new strategies
toward markets such as Brazil,
where we began to work
three years ago by sending
fruit”.
The company invested two
millions of euros in the
factory last year, because
Companies
the largest producer of fresh fruit of spain continues to
invest in technology to achieve new markets where does not
reach its competition. south america and the asian market are
examples of it.
“to reach certain places it
should be conditioned to
the cold in a different way, if
you want to export to nearby
countries”, says Trilla.
The company has installed
a new refrigeration chamber
to lower the temperature of
the fruit to zero degrees in
eight hours, and to be transported
at this temperature
until the destination in perfect
conditions.
They are necessary investments
to supply new markets
such as Brazil, Singapore
and Indonesia, where
the company began to work
last summer.
Actel has own staff which
is working the Arab market
and Asia. In fact, “we presented
ourselves as an exporting
company in these
places”, says Trilla. The cooperative
already distributes
in these places onion,
pomegranates from Elche
or citrus and prepares agreements
in apple with I.G.P
la inversión en I+D+i
en cada zona, trabajar con
oficinas y personal propios
en los principales mercados
mundiales y el desarrollo de
una red de agricultores colaboradores
a nivel local.
Del Mediterráneo a Latinoamérica
y Asia. El proceso
de expansión internacional
ha ido desarrollándose en
varias fases, llegando primero
a los mercados más cercanos
y parecidos al nuestro en
el Mediterráneo, abarcando
después la zona de Latinoamérica
y afrontando ahora
el reto de los mercados en
expansión de Asia.
Fitó siempre ha buscado
para su expansión internacional
países con una agricultura
muy productiva y
competitiva que necesita variedades
híbridas que tienen
más valor.
Con estas premisas, Fitó ha
creado hasta hoy un total de
cinco filiales comerciales
en Turquía, Italia, México,
Portugal y Francia. Todas
ellas cuentan con oficinas
propias, centro de investigación,
campos de ensayo y
agricultores colaboradores.
Además, cuenta con cuatro
centros de desarrollo en Agadir
(Marruecos), Amman
(Jordania), Sao Paolo (Brasil)
y Shandong (China).
Todo este proceso de expansión
internacional a través
de filiales y centros de desarrollo
se ha completado con
una red de distribuidores en
exclusiva de Semillas Fitó
que permite vender en más
de 70 países del mundo y en
tener una posición de liderazgo
en muchos mercados,
principalmente en berenjena,
melón (amarillo, piel de
sapo, etcétera) y pepino.
De cara al futuro el objetivo
es claro, y lo primero es
consolidar la presencia de
Semillas Fitó en todos estos
Semillas Fitó was devoted
almost one hundred percent
to the national seed
market in 1995. In just 17
years, the international
expansion of the company
has been spectacular. In
2012 the export reached
55 percent of sales, and
more than 155 workers are
already outside of Spain,
highlighting Turkey where
are working more than 40
employees.
This strong commitment
to the international market
was raised following a
strategy based on the company
values: the investment
in R&D&i in each
area, work with offices and
staff in the main world
markets and the development
of a group of farmers
with whom work at the local
level.
From the Mediterranean
to Latin America and Asia.
The process of international
expansion has been
mercados donde ha llegado
en los últimos 10 años. El
segundo paso se centra en
el mercado asiático (China
e India, principalmente), ya
que dos terceras partes del
consumo hortícola mundial
está en esa zona y hay que
apostar por este mercado.
arriving first to the closest
markets and similar to those
located in the Mediterranean
area, after covering Latin
Fitó has always searched for
its international expansion,
countries with a productive
and competitive agriculture
that needs hybrid varieties
that have more value.
With this premise, Fitó has
created five trading branch
in Turkey, Italy, Mexico, Portugal
and France. All of them
have own offices, research
center, trial field and cooperating
farmers. In addition,
it has four development
centers in Agadir (Morocco),
Amman (Jordan), Sao Paulo
(Brazil) and Shandong (China).
This process of international
expansion through trading
branch and development
centers has been supplemented
with an exclusive
distribution network of Semillas
Fitó that allows sell
in over 70 countries worldwide
and have a leadership
mainly in aubergine, melon
of this company in the past 17 years. its success is real, but the most
important has been to take care the founding values of the company.
consolidate the presence
of Semillas Fitó in all these
markets where it has been
step is the Asian market
it is necessary a commitment
(Coprohníjar) |
“Andalusia
will be more
competitive
when the train
for goods be a
reality”
The ground transportation
is the most
widely logistical transport
used in Spain and
does not provide much
choice, so it affects the
andalusian horticulture
competitiveness. Forecasts
indicate that the
‘corredor Mediterráneo’
will arrive for 2014-
2015 and Almería will
be able to use the railway
lines to send fruits
and vegetables.
The president of Coprohníjar,
Antonio
García Padilla, a company
that has won
competitiveness with
cherry tomato compared
to supply of Morocco,
notes that “now
we need a rapid and
competitive transport
to win more competitiveness,
because we
are more competitive in
relation to the supply of
Africa”.
One of the problems
of the Spanish export
is the gas-oil price.
“When is developed
the railway transport,
it will be retrieved the
green bean crops in
Andalusia, because the
Spanish green been has
a better business life
and the producers have
adapted to reduced
profits”, says García Padilla.
Coprohníjar will reach
at the end of 2012-
2013, 20,000 tons of
cherry tomato, 2,000
tons more than in the
previous year. The
company has 12,000
tons of another type
of tomatoes and more
than 10,000 tons of
white seedless watermelon
from May.
Camposol
will increase
the price of its
asparagus by
30 percent
The agro-industrial
company Camposol
will increase by 30%
the price of its asparagus.
This is a measure
that the own company’s
executives consider decisive,
as the increase of
its operating costs does
not make the business
sustainable.
According to its Chief
Commercial Officer,
José Antonio Gómez
Bazán, the increase will
take effect towards the
end of January 2013
and the Company has
already started to communicate
it to its main
customers. Gómez
Bazán stated that this
increase is due to the increase
of its costs during
the last three years. He
referred, for instance,
that labour increased
more than 50%, the
cost of machinery by
almost 300% and the
cubic meter of water by
30%.
Likewise, Gómez Bazán
mentioned that the
costs also increased due
to the need to renew
its crops in new lands.
“To prepare an hectare
we need between US$
30 thousand and US$
40 thousand, which includes
technified irrigation,”
he added.
José Antonio Gómez
declared that Camposol
has not assessed the
market reaction regarding
its decision to increase
the price of the
product yet and does
not know how this increase
will be taken by
its customers. He pointed
out that, if the increase
is not accepted,
the asparagus business
could risk disappearing
and Camposol would
have to opt to other
crops.
The Peruvian specialist
in agricultural issues,
Fernando Cillóniz,
mentioned that in 2012
the price of asparagus
had already increased
by 20%, although he
recognized that the volume
exported by Peru
decreased.
The company has more
than 2,600 hectares
dedicated to the cultivation
of this product.
A date: In the last
three years, the fields
destined to asparagus
in Peru dropped from
30,000 to 26,000 hectares.

(ParqueNat) |
“The tomato
varieties
without
resistance to
pests withstand
a better winter”
Between December and
February are concentrated
the problems of
supply and quality in
the horticulture from
the southeast of Spain
because of the cold
snap. Although the varietal
improvement allows
overcome these
climatological conditions,
not all varieties
have the same behavior.
ParqueNat, located
between Almería and
Níjar, has developed a
range of tomatoes without
resistance to pests
that “allows us withstand
a better winter
and have a high production
in the more
complicated months of
the winter”, says José
Ángel González, president
of the cooperative.
The company starts
the business activity in
december and is maintained
until May “with
a high standards of
quality due to varieties
without resistance to
pests”, says González.
This strategy involves
“a high risk, because we
are exposed to virus so
we can lose the production.
For this reason,
our security protocols
are high”, says the president.
ParqueNat reached
19,000 tons of tomatoes
the last campaign. A 70
percent was branch tomato
and loose tomato.
It also has 2,000 tons of
watermelon.
“The demand
for courgette
extends outside
of traditional
markets”
Courgette is one of
the products of rapid
growth in the greenhouses
from Almería
with a surface above
5,200 hectares. Despite
of the increase of
surface and production,
the courgette has
maintained an attractive
price in origin as a
result of an increase in
the demand “outside
of the traditional markets,
such as french or
english”, says Rogelio
Villanueva, president of
Lomanoryas.
The German market is
increasing the demand,
especially in spring
months, “when the
supply increases and
the Germans respond
well to discounts and
promotions”, says Vil-
lanueva.
This demand good behavior
of the courgette
has facilitated that
Almería is having a
business ‘boom’ based
on courgette and, in addition
to reference companies,
as Lomanoryas,
other family business
who work the courgette
have emerged.
In addition to markets
of the Center of Europe,
the Spanish courgette is
looking at the Eastern
Europe. Spain exported
almost 7,000 tons to
the East of Europe in
2011, highlighting the
2,800 tons exported to
Poland.
Lomanoryas sold more
than 16,000 tons of
courgette last year, the
85% of its supply.

(Ejidomar) |
“Supermarkets
have
collapsed the
consumption of
Galia melon”
Four years ago the seed
company Clause-Tezier
launched a long-life
Galia melon for greenhouse
producers from
Almería. A productive
melon but without
good eating. The result
was immediate. The
market and European
consumers rejected the
product. This situation
caused a distrust a low
prices, that has finished
with the crisis of the
Galia melon in Spain.
Galia melon loses consumers
by the loss of
market confidence and
gains market share in
other melon varieties,
as piel de sapo, like
Cantaloupe melon or
watermelon.
Almería has been witness
of this development
and “the producers
are commitment
with the watermelon
and have left abandoning
the Galia melon”,
says José Antonio Baños,
president of Ejidomar,
one of the companies
that was leading
in quality in Galia.
“Supermarkets wanted
melons that withstood
on the supermarket
shelves for weeks and
this is a contradiction
with the quality
of product. Supermarkets
have plunged the
consumption of Galia”,
adds Baños.
Size. A positive aspect
of the watermelon is
the business aspect,
because “the market
demands are differents
and allows to offer any
type of size, because
the southern Europe
likes big sizes and the
Central and Northern
Europe likes smaller
sizes”, says Baños.
This does not happen
with Galia, where “the
markets only like a 5-6
size and the rest have
no market”, complaint
Baños, who notes that
“the 50 percent of the
production of Galia
melon has different
sizes and this causes
low settlements to the
producers”.
Nijarsol |
Strong in pear
cherry tomato
The specialization in
products and the certification
of the offer are
the keys to understand
this newly created company.
The two reference
products are pear cherry
tomato and branch
tomato.
Currently, the company
has a surface with 75
hectares with a production
between 5,000 and
6,000 tons of cherry tomato.
In fact, last year
reached 5,500 tons of
pear cherry tomato, one
of their reference products,
with the branch
tomato.
The trading strategy
of the firm is the export,
being Europe the
main destination. “We
are dealing with different
markets from
all over Europe such
as Germany, United
Kingdom, Finland and
the Scandinavian countries.
More recently we
have opened another
market in the Eastern
countries”, says Francisco
Cazorla, manager
of Nijarsol.
When they sell their
product, the company
supplies to supermarkets
with cherry tomato
with the brand Nijarsol.
Finally, the company
has recently invested
in improving logistics
and the machinery to
provide a better service
to their customers. In
this way, they increase
its offer to diversify the
portfolio of products,
such as the 1,700 tons
that the company foresees
to sell of branch tomato;
600 tons of cherry
tomato and 1,200
tons of organic.

(Fruit Audit) |
“We have
managed
to reduce
unfounded
complaint”
The world’s leading
exporter of fruits and
vegetables -Spain- has
taken more than 50
years to have a tool that
collects the unfounded
complaints in its international
operations.
Fruit Audit, led by the
businessman Rubén
Cervera, was born two
years ago and already
has nearly 100 customers,
which have given
him the responsibility
for certifying the complaints.
One of the main problems
that have the
Spanish export companies
of fruits and vegetables
are the unfounded
complaints. They
happen “when there
is excess supply in the
market”, says Cervera.
This type of complaints
have meant more than
a 10 percent of the exported
volume in some
cases.
“Since Fruit Audit is
working on controlling
the veracity of the
complaints, these have
been reduced to three
percent”, says Cervera.
The company has
branches in Germany,
United Kingdom and
Poland to check in 24
hours the quality of
the complained product
by the customer to
the supplier. In addition,
the technical team
of Fruit Audit has the
ability to manage the
quality control of the
product and reorganize
wrong product and
send them to another
destination.
Enrique de los Ríos
(Unica Group) |
“The imitation
of models of
the chains are
problems for
the producers”
The current economic
situation of Europe is
causing changes in the
distribution. Supermarkets
that are close
to the discount type,
discounts which are
improving their shelves
to catch new customers
and the ‘express’ format
to capture local customers.
Changes that are no
strangers to the producers
but them cause strategic
problems. “We are
in a situation of imitation
of models by the
chains”, complains Enrique
de los Ríos, general
manager of Unica
Group, company from
Almería which includes
1,500 producers and
160,000 tons.
This movement of
chains “provoke problems
for the supplier
companies of the supermarkets,
because many
distribution companies
imitate the discount
format without being
a discount”, complains
de los Ríos.
The price. The price is a
decisive argument and
“investments in R&D to
develop new varieties
have fallen because the
chain pressures to the
supplier to get cheaper
products”, says de los
Ríos.
In this sense, the supermarkets
have shown
more interest to contact
with the producers to
remove the brokering
“with the objective of
the price”, adds the executive
of Unica Group.
“Spain is suffering because
we are not specialists
in the price but
in offering innovation
at competitive prices”,
highlights de los Ríos.
Germany is the destination
where there
is more ‘imitation of
models’, where the
“discount is strong and
everybody are looking
for this model to gain
market share”, says de
los Ríos.
Among the most important
changes of the
chains, highlights the
‘express’ supermarkets,
“a model with future to
bring the retail outlet to
the cities”.

The supply crisis of
broccoli that caused record
prices in brassicas
in December, has been
focus point for European
chains. Supermarkets
used their financial
reserves to respond
to prices at origin.
All this happened at the
end of September when
the heavy rains damaged
the ground in the
North of Almeria and
Murcia. It paralyzed the
transplants of December
and January.
The chains have asked
their suppliers “seek
alternatives production
the future meteorological
inclemency”,
says Carlos Domenech
of Agromark, the third
largest producer of
broccoli in Spain.
New markets. This
would cause increases
in supply, which “can
be moved to industry
when there is bad
weather or to the development
of new markets,
such as Arab Emirates
or Eastern Europe”,
adds Domenech, where
some spanish companies
have begun to
work the first containers,
although at a slow
pace.
Another market where
the Spanish producer of
is Morocco. “Morocco
of Los Gallombares, the
The cooperative has already
reached the 4,000
tons of green asparagus
in Granada and in April
will inaugurate new facilities
in Loja (Granada),
where will increase
its supply to 2,000 tons
more in two years.
The company has invested
“I could not say the reason
for this change. But
I.G.P. Poma de Girona |
The 25 percent
is exported
The export is getting
increasingly boom for
the apple of the Protected
Geographical
Indication Poma de
Girona. In fact, the PGI
is changing respect to
the marketing. “If the
export represented a 10
percent a few years ago,
the goal consists on
reaches a 50 percent in
two years”.
The reason for this
change is due to the
weak consumption of
the Spanish market,
and at the same time
are emerging new markets
that appreciate our
product”, says Venanci
Grau, president of PGI
Poma de Girona.
Grau has highlighted
the efforts made in recent
years to get a good
level of marketing. Currently,
the 75 percent
of the production of
‘Manzana of Girona’ is
for the Spanish market
and the remaining 25
percent is for interna-
Venanci Grau.
tional destination.
The PGI Poma de Girona
works permanently
in innovation and investigation
in the experimental
centre Mas
Badia, to provides a top
quality product.
Therefore, “we are seeing
the results of a new
method of growth of
trees, in addition to
other improvements in
IPM and pests control
in order to get a greater
color of the fruit and
also greater productivity”,
explains Grau.
Ecopark |
6,500 tons in
organic
Ecopark reached 6,500
tons of organic products
last year. This firm,
in expansion period,
focus on the own production,
which is a 70
percent of the company
and a 30 percent is
brought by producers.
The organic production
of this company from
Almería is booming. In
total, it expects on the
market 7,500 tons the
next campaign, where
the cherry tomato and
its specialities are the
major part of the business.
“We harvest the crop
in different areas for
12 months”, says Luis
Olcina, manager of
Ecopark. Although
due to crop rotations
necessary for organic
farming, also produces
pepper, branch tomato
or cucumber, among
other crops.
The crop area under is
concentrated in three
places: between Tahal
and Uleila (Almería),
where harvest in summer
and Níjar (Alm-
Luís Olcina, manager of Ecopark.
ería) and Mazarrón
(Murcia), this last one
2 campaigns ago. It is
the first company that
have made a change in
the area of production
to ensure quality and
volume.
Ecopark exports all
around Europe: Germany,
United Kingdom,
France, Switzerland,
Italy, Austria and
the Scandinavian countries,
among others.
“Destinations that are
consolidated campaign
to campaign,” adds Olcina.
Responding to customers,
the company has
recently finished the
work to extend the facilities
in 1,500 square
meters with an investment
of 200,000 euros.
In addition, it has created
a new brand called
Indal+ in order to provide
a more exclusive
product for the most
exquisite on the palates
which will be distributed
mainly in specialized
shops.

Biosabor |
The company
foresees to sell
15,000 tons of
organic product
The company is in an
expansion period, because
next year is foreseen
a marketing of
15,000 tons, with a
surface of 120 hectares
located in Campo de
Níjar and La Cañada,
mainly grown in greenhouse,
although it also
has between 12 and 14
hectares in the open.
Francisco Belmonte,
manager of Biosabor,
explains that the company’s
growth is due to
the commitment for the
own production.
The key product of Biosabor
is the branch
tomato, around 70 percent
of the total production.
It also complements
its portfolio of
products with tomato,
pear cherry tomato, cucumber
in autumn and
spring, and watermelon
and melon in summer.
The firm has as reference
the European markets.
The 95 percent of
the product is sent outside
of Spain. Germany
is the main customer,
because it has a 60 percent
of its supply. The
remaining 40 percent
is distributed in France,
Scandinavian Countries,
United Kingdom
and Switzerland,
among others.
In addition, Biosabor
has already opened a
new line of products
ready made. In particular,
the products are:
organic fried tomato,
crushed tomatoes, gazpacho,
fried tomato, all
of the organic. It also
is added: quince jelly,
which also use the best
tomato as raw material.
In fact, is a solution for
quality products noncommercial
that are
wasted. “It is another
example to sell products
with a different
supply in the market”,
says Belmonte.
Frunet |
Look at the
Nordic markets
Frunet is a reference
company which has
the system for the organic
production of
fruits and vegetables.
The company has not
stopped growing in volume
and business since
it began the business
activity in 2003.
Nowadays, the company
reaches 8,000 tons
of fruit and vegetables,
where the export monopolizes
the offer. For
this reason, the Nordic
markets, Germany,
France or United Kingdom
are the four relevant
markets for this
firm from Málaga.
The company invests
in cherry tomato and a
diversity of supply, the
keys to understand its
works in the organic
market, thanks to their
varieties of cherry tomato
(branch, pear and
round), branch tomato
and, more recently, cu-
Antonio Lavao, manager of Frunet.
cumber, pepper, courgette
and aubergine,
among others, following
a defined strategy
with valuable customers.
In addition, Frunet
continues to grow in organic
subtropical fruits.
In fact, the firm has increased
the volume of
mango a 300 percent
and it expects to grow
in avocado, although
not in that percentage.
The company continues
developing the import,
because it is an important
via for the business
develop of Frunet.
In fact, the company
imports avocado from
different countries of
South America, such
as Mexico, Peru and
Chile, which “allow us
close the trade cycle,
being the export the
main destination”, explains
Antonio Lavao,
manager of Frunet.

Fulgencio Spa, manager of Fulgencio Spa.
Fulgencio Spa |
The 50 percent
of its cherry
tomato is
branch
The firm will continue
delivering the offer on
the basis of the diversity
of markets. It will
continue distributing
the product among
national and international
markets for this
campaign.
The key product of
Fulgencio Spa is the
branch cherry tomato
and already represents
a 50 percent of the total
of tomato cherry,
taking second place the
round and pear cherry
tomatoes.
At present, the company
has five receiving
points on the coast of
Granada, which makes
it to have an annual
production of 14,000
tons between Granada,
with a surface of 100
hectares and the estates
located in Morocco.
The company foresees
to increase the surface
in 15 hectares in Granada
for this year, which
represents a rise of 13
percent. The cherry tomato
branch tomato
are sent for international
markets.
In fact, a large part of
these products are exported
to EU, with Germany,
United Kingdom
and the Netherlands as
reference markets. Although
the company
has recently started
dealing with Eastern
Europe markets, mainly
Russia, because “we
have noticed an increase
of cherry tomato
in this country”, says
Fulgencio Spa, manager
of Fulgencio Spa.
However, the company
prepares the organic
production for this
year, although the volume
would be relatively
small.
Campojoyma |
More than
5,000 tons of
organic cherry
tomato
Campojoyma foresees
to increase its organic
offer this campaign
between a 25-30 percent,
where the tomato
reaches 9,000 tons of
the 14,000 tons that
sold on average last
year.
This signature works a
wide range of organic
products, although
focus its efforts in six
products, where highlights
the tomato,
which represents a 65
percent of the total
sold.
The cherry tomato is
very important for the
economic future of the
company, because it
has reached 5,400 tons
of organic tomato cherry,
of where 1,200 tons
are pear cherry tomato;
2,000 tons are branch
cherry tomato and the
major part is concentrated
in cherry tomato.
Andrés Montoya.
The surface of organic
cherry tomato is increasing
and already
has 47 hectares. A 35
percent of the organic
product is divided between
courgette, tomato,
aubergine, cucumber
and pepper. In fact,
it closes the growing
cycle for 12 months.
Also it has introduced
Chinese cabbage, a referent
in the Spanish
market with 700 tons,
with a campaign that
includes from January
to the end of March.
The export is the key to
the economic development
of this company
from Almería, because
almost a 100 percent
of the production is
exported, being EU the
main destination, specially
the Nordic countries
(Sweden and Denmark)
and Germany.

The trading company
of subtropical fruits,
Trops, will try to consolidate
their production
volume this year.
This company has a
surface with 2,000 hectares
of avocado and
800 hectares of mango,
which distributes in
more than 22 countries.
The conventional supply
will continue to
focus on subtropical
fruits, mainly avocado
and mango. An upward
line that is reflected in
the extension to 14,000
square meters in its recent
facilities. With the
6,000 square meters we
already have, “will allow
us to expand our
says José Manuel Acosta,
president of Trops.
These new facilities
Enrique Colilles, manager of Trops.
others.Currently, it already
represents a three
percent of the company
With regard to organic,
line. In addition to avocado,
the company is
working with mango.
Axarquía Tropical |
It reaches
4,000 tonns of
subtropical fruit
The company from
Málaga will seek to
consolidate its turnover
for this camoaign.
This firm marketed
4,000 tons of subtropical
products last year,
highlighting the avocado,
which represents
a 60 percent of its supply.
The remaining 40
percent is split between
mango and medlar.
The signature is committed
to the national
product. Nevertheless
has the support of 500
producers -a 90 percent
of them are from Axarquía,
and the rest from
other areas of Málaga
and Granada-.
In order to maintain
the company, has become
in supplier in the
Antonio Fernando.
Spanish market and has
increased its relationship
with the French
market, althoug it also
sends goods to the rest
of Europe, because the
export is very important
for the trading
strategy of the company.
In fact, it represents
a 80 percent of turnover.
For the next campaign,
Antonio Fernando,
manager of the firm,
will consolidate the European
markets which
is currently working,
as well as increase the
storage capacity of
cold. Finally, the trading
strategy is guaranteed
under the brands:
Alexis Schlenew
(Global Fruit Point Praha) |
“Supermarkets
are the only
ones which
include tropical
fruit in Eastern
Europe”
Eastern Europe has become
a ‘focus’ market
for many ‘traders’ of
the fruit and vegetable
business. They are virgin
markets for many
references and the increase
of purchasing
power and the develop
of upper-middle class
has encouraged many
exporters and European
chains -Tesco, Billa,
Albert Heijn, Rewe, Auchan,
…- to find your
position.
The Eastern Europe also
suffers a brake on economic
development. For
this reason, today the
discount chains -Lidl,
Aldi, Netto, Biedronka,
…- are growing in Eastern
Europe. This situation
provokes a brake of
value references in their
development.
That is what is happening
with the tropical
fruits. The German
firm, Global Fruit Point,
established a platform
in Prague (Czech Republic),
which is specialized
in the tropical
fruit trade for Eastern
Europe, headed by Alexis
Schlenew.
The consumption of
tropical fruits in these
markets is not developed
and, except the
pineapple, which already
has presence in
the households, the rest
of tropical fruits has
not yet found its niche.
The development of the
tropical fruits in Eastern
Europe “is done
with the supermarkets,
because the groceries
do not provide this
type of products”, says
Schlenew.
Schlenew points out
that “there are less retail
outlets increasingly
in Czech Republic and
only the Vietnamese
population has groceries
where the fruits and
vegetables do not have
a special role”, says
the executive Schlenew.
The fruits and
vegetables demand in
the Eastern European
markets occurs in the
months where there is
pleasant temperatures.
“The winter is not for
the tropical fruits consumption”,
explains
Schlenew.

This year the company
intends to stimulate the
fact, the visitors can
taste, smell, touch and
even also hear the product.
“We are convinced that
“We have bet
on the market
of green bean
specialities”
Agroatlas Europa looks
at the market of the
green bean specialities
to escape from the price
war of the helda bean
in Morocco. “It is not
our dynamics work for
price and we have bet
on in the market of the
specialities, such as the
bobby bean”, points out
Ricardo Menoyo, director
of Agroaltas Europa.
This green bean requires
a more professional
management,
since “the harvest of the
product has to be made
during specific hours,
and the cold chain is vital,
because it is a green
bean very fragile and
perishable”, explains
Menoyo.
The project of Agroatlas
with the bobby bean
includes three years of
work with a varietal improvement,
“where we
are working with six varieties
to check texture
and life”; is searched
to extend the life of
the product and give it
“an added value to the
product through more
attractive presentations
than the current”, says
the executive of Agroatlas.
This project has a surface
of 150 hectares in
Ricardo Menoyo.
greenhouse at the end
of those three years.
Agroatlas also works
the line of cherry tomato
and, from this
campaign, starts with
stone fruit. “We have
started a line of stone
fruit in Morocco to cover
a market niche between
the south american
campaign and the
start of the South of
Europe between March
and April”, indicates
Menoyo.
The company has begun
a search phase of
2-3 clients specialized
in stone fruit, which
serve different destinations.
The stone fruit
