El primer día del nuevo año escolar siempre
es muy emocionante para los estudiantes.
Tienen nuevos materiales que están deseosos
de usar; quieren ver a sus amigos otra vez después
de las vacaciones del verano; y quieren saber
quiénes van a ser sus maestros. En Mamaroneck,
hay algo más que hace el comienzo de la escuela
muy emocionante: todos los estudiantes de los grados
ocho y nueve recibirán su iPad personal.
Para los estudiantes del novena grado, aprender a
acceder al sistema informático del Distrito, obtener
una cuenta para el Internet, y aprender cómo el iPad
les ayudará a aprender formaron parte de su orientación
de novena grado el primer día de escuela. Durante
la orientación, también aprendieron acerca de
los reglamentos para el uso aceptable del iPad, y cada
estudiante firmó un acuerdo de usuario.
Como con todas las iniciativas en las Escuelas Públicas
de Mamaroneck, la participación de los padres
es esencial. Los padres de estudiantes del noveno
grado fueron invitados a una sesión de información
más tarde en el día el primer día de escuela
y el segundo.
En esa reunión, el Dr. Robert I. Shaps, Superintendente
de las Escuelas, quien ha dirigido esta iniciativa,
les explicó a los padres acerca del uso de los
ipads y cómo el uso de un iPad ayudará a aumentar
y mejorar el aprendizaje.
También habló a fondo acerca de las oportunidades
y responsabilidades de los estudiantes quienes
recibían los iPads. Se les pidió a los padres que leyeran
la política de uso aceptable para el iPad y firmar
el acuerdo. Los padres tienen la opción de comprar
seguro (a costo mínimo) para cubrir daños y/o robo
del iPad. Al fin de la reunión, los padres recibieron
el iPad para su hijo(a).
Los estudiantes del octavo grado recibirán sus
iPads en octubre. Se seguirán los mismos procedimientos:
una reunión para los estudiantes y otra reunión
para los padres.
La idea para esta iniciativa comenzó hace tres años
con los maestros de ciencias en la Escuela Media
Hommocks del Distrito. Se utilizaron iPads en las
clases de Ciencia de la tierra de Regentes con mucho
éxito.
El uso del iPad ayudó a reforzar el aprendizaje del
currículo y a aumentar la participación y el rendimiento
de los estudiantes. Basado en el éxito en la
escuela media, esta nueva iniciativa fur creada. Con
el éxito continuo, se espera expandir al grado 10, al
11 y a todos los grados 6-12.

IPads para estudiantes de los grados ocho y
nueve cambiarán experiencias de aprendizaje
En el año escolar 2014-2015, los estudiantes tomarán
los exámenes estatales en línea.
La iniciativa del iPad asegurará que en ese entonces
los estudiantes habrán tenido experiencia usando la
tecnología y se sentirán cómodos con su uso, para
concentrarse en las preguntas del examen en vez de
la operación del equipo.
La tecnología está cambiando tantas cosas, y la
educación no es excepción; cambiará el aprendizaje
de maneras que ni las podemos imaginar.
¿Recuerda usted cuánto tiempo pasó copiando información
de una pizarra en una clase? Imagínese
en vez tomar una foto de la pizarra con un iPad.
¿Recuerda usted cargar con libros de texto pesados
en una mochila yendo y viniendo de su casa? Imagínese
en vez llevar un iPad con toda la información
que contendrían los libros de texto.
Los estudiantes jóvenes han podido muy rápido
aprender a usar la tecnología y encontrar nuevas
maneras de usarla; lo que puedan descubrir y crear
seguramente será animado teniendo un iPad personal.

The first day of the new school year is always
exciting for students. They have new school
supplies they are anxious to use; they want
to see their friends again after the summer break;
and, they want to discover who their teachers will
be. At Mamaroneck, there is something else that
makes the opening of school exciting: all eighth
and ninth graders will be issued their personal iPad.
For ninth graders, learning how to access the
District´s computer system, getting an online account,
and learning about the ways the iPad will
help them learn was part of their freshman orientation
on the opening day of school. During orientation,
they also learned about the regulations for the
acceptable use of the iPad, and each student signed
a user agreement.
As with all initiatives in the Mamaroneck Public
Schools, parental involvement is essential. Pa-
rents of ninth graders were invited to an information
session held later in the day on the first and
second day of school. At those meetings, Dr. Robert
I. Shaps, Superintendent of Schools, who has
spearheaded this initiative, explained to the parents
about the use of the iPads and how the use
of an iPad will help increase and improve their
child´s learning.
He also spoke in depth about the opportunities
and responsibilities of the students receiving the
iPads. Parents were asked to read the acceptable
use policy for the iPad and sign the agreement. Parents
have the option of purchasing insurance(at
minimal cost) to cover damage and/or theft of the
iPad. At the close of the meeting, parents received
the iPad for their child.
Eighth graders will receive their iPads in October.
The same procedures will be followed: a meeting
for students and another meeting for parents.
The idea for this initiative began three years ago
with science teachers at the District´s Hommocks
Middle School. iPads were used in Regents Earth
Science classes with great success. Use of the
iPad helped reinforce learning the curriculum and
increased student participation and achievement.
Based on the success at the middle school, this
new initiative was created. With continued success,
it is hoped to expand to grade 10, grade 11,
and all grades 6-12.
In the school year 2014-2015, students will take
state exams online. The iPad initiative will ensure
that at that time students will have had experience
using the technology and will be comfortable with
its use, in order to concentrate on the test questions
rather than on the operation of the equipment.
Technology is changing so many things, and education
is not an exception; it will change learning
in ways we cannot even imagine.
Do you remember how much time you spent copying
information from a blackboard in a class?
Imagine taking a picture of the blackboard with an
iPad instead! Do you remember carrying heavy
textbooks in a backpack to and from your home?
Imagine carrying an iPad with all the information
the textbooks would contain.
Young students have been very quick in learning
to use technology and finding new ways to use it;
what they can discover and create will certainly be
encouraged by having a personal iPad. Get involved
in technology with your child and have your
child teach you!
