Indigo Patagonia Hotel
Indigo Patagonia Hotel is situated along the seaside promenade of Puerto Natales, the doorway to the
Torres del Paine National Park. It is has six levels with 29 bedrooms and a Spa on top of the building.
The Project is organized around three main premises. First: to discover the building as a traveler would,
experiencing places not at once but through continuous steps. Second: to be sensitive with the site
and its provincial character, taking into account the potential noise levels. Thirdly: to radically diff erentiate
the intimate space of the sleeping rooms from the monumental space of public areas.
The interior circulation has been designed with regard to the fi rst premise, in order to show the inner
void of public spaces in fragmented glances and not all at once. This leads from street level to the top
fl oor, evolving from a soft ramp to a system of staircases and from corridors to bridges. Horizontal and
vertical movement thus becomes an orchestrated choreography within the building. For the second
premise, and in order to match the building’s exterior expression with its context, materials were
chosen that were already present in the town such as timber and corrugated steel. The whole site is
occupied by a simple volume that contains a systematic rhythm of windows. More specifi cally, this
volume recreates the diff erentiation, often seen in Puerto Natales, between the front and lateral elevations.
Consequently, corrugated steel was used for the street façades while the sides are made from
treated pine. The various functions of the buildings made it necessary to develop a coherent design
philosophy that is both functional and modern.
El Boulevard
The El Boulevard retail center is located in the city of Vitoria, in the north of Spain. This project concerns
a 125,000 sqm development built within the existing structure of an old steel factory called
Sidenor. The design team took special care to not only create an exciting retail development but to
also provide a logical, well-integrated and accessible expansion of the city. The project’s master plan
aimed to divide the development into three diff erent sectors: the retail centre, the hypermarket and
the retail warehouses and storage areas.
Today, the building serves as a landmark for the city of Vitoria. With its urban and pedestrian quality,
it provides a convenient and easily navigable center for pedestrians. The retail center has three levels
of commercial space that gravitate around the centrally placed hypermarket and a 7,000 sqm cinema
on the second fl oor. This retail and entertainment venture was awarded fi rst prize in the Large Shopping
Centers category, during the Spanish Shopping Centers Conference that was held in Sevilla in
October 2004.
known material Gore-Tex, humidity is transported
to the outside but not the other way round.
A different story is the rounded edges and
corners of the house: ever so simple as effec-
tive. A quarter-segment of a polocal tube with
a diameter of 50 centimetres each forms an
elevation. The corners take up 14 elements of
exact sphere segments altogether, which were
moulded for that very purpose.
The aesthetics of these unusual materials flash
light onto an architectural taboo. Synthetic
materials surround us, whether in shops, cars
or our workplaces. Only architecture pretends
that there have not been any new materials
since Vitruvius. Embarrassed, we conceal the
entire choice of contemporary materials, such
as Styrofoam insulation, PU-foam or silicon-
synthetic resin, behind plastering, natural-
stone facades and wooden grating.
Emanating from some Austrian regions, an
ideology has won recognition that propagates
the restoration of genuine wood-constructions,
which actually consist of epoxy-soaked wood-
shavings. This house is a thorn in the side of
the theory of regionalism as a confinement to
form and/or material. Should regionalism be
of any relevance in a global context, it is to be
reconsidered thoroughly and without the least
fear. Otherwise it might fall back on a new
provincialism sooner or later.
Elementos • Cubierta Cubierta • Elementos
canal, marsellesas,...), colores y acabados (envejeci-
dos, esmaltados,...) y piezas especiales (que permi-
ten resolver los encuentros con paramentos salien-
tes, cumbreras, ventilaciones,...).
do unidades completas.
cunstancias. No obstante, la madera debe o puede
protegerse frente a:
cuartean, aparecen fi suras y descuelgues, etc.), sien-
canal, marsellesas,...), colores y acabados (envejeci-
dos, esmaltados,...) y piezas especiales (que permi-
ten resolver los encuentros con paramentos salien-
tes, cumbreras, ventilaciones,...).
do unidades completas.
cunstancias. No obstante, la madera debe o puede
protegerse frente a:
plastifi cado. Con este último se forman encofrados
especialmente indicados para columnas y pilares
redondos, cuadrados y rectangulares, disponibles
fi no , pulido, coloreado, etc.
Future Systems
Selfridges Birmingham
Selfridges required a state-of-the-art building for its Birmingham department store on the site of the newly Photographs:
redeveloped bull ring. The strikingly original design by Future Systems hugs the site’s dramatic incline like a Soren Aagaard
shimmering wave and drops down to St Martin’s square below. Unlike most structures with curved façades, Location:
the Selfridges building curves three-dimensionally, so that there is no distinction between “walls” or “roof” Birmingham, UK
and no abrupt angles to break the organic, flowing lines.
Rising from the ground, the facade gently billows outwards before being drawn into a kind of waistline and then
curving out again and over, in one continuous movement. The exterior is enveloped in a skin made up of thousands
of aluminum discs, creating a fine, lustrous grain across the whole building. The effect, like sequins on a dress
or the scales of a snake, gives the whole building the quality of a vast, sensuous architectural structure.
The architects wanted the interior to meet the expectations created by the exterior, balancing the curiosity
created by the unique façade. The fluidity of the form of the building is matched inside with an organically
shaped atrium stretching across the floor plan. Like an urban canyon, the atrium creates shafts of natural light
that penetrate deep inside the space, allowing a clear view of the sky and giving a real sense of changing
weather conditions outside. The flood of natural light articulates the store’s dramatic inner landscape with
highlights, shadows and reflections.
Large, sinuously shaped openings carved from the form at the sides provide shop windows and views out.
These openings are frameless, but they are surrounded by an edge of yellow frits, gently defining their shape.
The building responds to the wish for a building that provides an architectural landmark for Birmingham by re-interpreting
the form and function of a department store, enabling it to become a catalyst for urban regeneration.
