SOME NEW DOCUMENTS CONCERNING AIZPITARTE'S DICTIONARY
The document N.° 13 is a letter from Valentín de Verastegui, perhaps
the Guards Commander of Alava, to Iñigo Ortes de Velasco, Diputado
General, i.e., Head of the Diputación of the same Province. It has no date,
but it seems to have been written after the death of Aizpitarte, who is
mentioned («Administrador del señor Marqués de Montehermoso»). There
is a mention of Erro, undoubtedly Juan Bautista Erro (1773-1854), an
absolutist politician and author of some books, whom Hübner depicted as
«uir non mediocriter doctus, sed caeco rerum patriarum amore abreptus»
(Monumenta linguae Ibericae, Berlin 1893, as quoted by Tovar, Mitología e
ideología sobre la lengua vasca, Madrid 1980, page 129).
I hope that these documents will help an exhaustive research on
Aizpitarte and the project of the Bascongada. This research should be,
completed through the publication of the dictionary.
In making the transcription, I have respected the original text, except the
abbreviations, the capital and small letters, the accents and the punctuation.
Some changes have also been introduced to adjust the italics to modern
usage.
There is really very little literature about this topic. We must mention
here the documents on the same theme published by Luis Michelena, «El
Diccionario vasco proyectado por la Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos
del País», Colección de documentos inéditos para la historia de Guipúzcoa, VI, San.
Sebastián 1965. The Instrucción itself is there and Michelena provides us with
interesting notes. Justo Garate and F. Ruiz de Arbulo published an anticle,
«El Lexicógrafo José María de Aizpitarte, vecino de Vitoria», in Boletín de la
Institución Sancho El Sabio, XV (1971), with literature (from Dodgson to our
days) and three photocopies of Aizpitarte's MS.

Agerpen honetan Archivo Prestamero delakoan (Arabako Foru Diputazioarena)
diren zenbait dokumentu ematen dira argitara. Jakina denez, Herriaren Adiskideen
Elkarteak, Campomanes-ek sugestaturik, euskal hiztegia egiteko erabakia hartu zuen.
Campomanes-en gutuna, zeinetan idea ematen du, dokumentu hauen artean aurkitzen
da. Bada beste gutun bat, Aizpitarterena, Peñafloridako Konteari zuzendua, eta
Aizpitartek burutu zuen lanaz dokumentazioa.
RÉSUMÉ
Dans ce rapport on donne connaissance de quelques documents de l'Archivo
Prestamero, appartenant á la Diputación d'Alava.
Il s'agit de lettres, compte-rendus etc. sur le pro jet de Dictionnaire Basque entrepris
par la Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País vers la fin du XVIIIème
siècle. C'est notamment le cas d'une lettre du ministre Campomanes, que suggera de
faire le Dictionnaire. Le projet est très lié au nom de José María de Aizpitarte, qui
laissa le manuscrit du Dictionnaire qu'on peut voir à Loyola.
