This book had its origin at FES-Zaragoza, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where most of the editors
freely discussed ideas about ecology of arid and semi-arid ecosystems in general and ecology of arbuscular
mycorrhizae in particular. At that time, we considered that there was a gap in the ecological role of
arbuscular mycorrhiza in desert ecosystems and that a first book synthesizing the information on mycorrhizal
symbiosis in these ecosystems was badly needed. From the origin of the idea until completion of this book, we
benefited from the help of many people. We are very grateful to the authors and co-authors for producing such
high-quality chapters, for tolerating our multiple demands and for their patience until the publication of the
book. We want to thank all reviewers who, with their anonymous work, assured the excellent quality of all the
