ABSTRACT
The sub-river basin of the Turbio river has an extension of more of 4000 km2 . It’s located in the
occidental extreme of the Guanajuato State near the boundaries of the State of Jalisco. This work
is part of the “Geo-hydrology Actualization Study of the sub-river basin of the Turbio river, Guanajuato
and Jalisco States” realized by the Sub-management of Geohydrology and Geotechnique of the
Mexican Geological Service (SGM) during the period 2004-2005.
Most of the elements and components that were revealed by the laboratory analysis of the water of the
sub-river basin, are compatible with a geologic environment constituted mostly by rhyolitic Tertiary
rocks. The presence of sulfates and chlorides it’s attributed to human activity more than to the geologic
environment. Contrary to the expectations, important amounts of nitrates weren’t detected, due to
the high agricultural activity. A significant concentration and distribution of 30 metals and other
additional elements such as As, Ba, Se, P, Ni, Sr, Ti, Ni and Bi, was reported. In specific points, the
presence of Cr, Mn, Mo, Al, Fe and Cu was detected. The first three of those elements could be
probably related with urban and industrial residuals loads close to San Francisco del Rincón, while the
seconds showed an abnormal concentration in some barrages.
