ABSTRACT
The goal of this work is to show how the gas resource not associated was quantified and how the risk
of the elements and the Petroleum System’s processes was evaluated for he Plays of the stratigraphic
unities of La Casita (Upper Jurassic), Padilla and La Virgen (Lower Cretaceous), in the sub-river basin
of Sabinas, in the North-East of Mexico. After 5 years of the conclusion of this work, in the year 2005,
the geologic postulates have guided the exploration of the Sub-river basin of Sabinas and the predictions
of having a risk of 1:3 for the Plays in La Casita and 1:5 for the Plays Padilla y La Virgen has been
confirmed in five wells, and also the predictions of minimal incorporation of 1 750 MMMpc of dry gas
reserves has been confirmed too. The methodology used to succeed the work’s goal, consisted in
integrate stratigraphic, structural, geo-chemical, paleontological and geo-physic information with 2D
seismic lines and geo-physic records of wells in a regional geological context. That methodology allowed
us to know the characteristics and the existence of the elements (generating stones, warehouse, trap
and seal) and processes (migration and synchronism) of the Petroleum System, with the objective of
identify the areas where the appropriate characteristics to preserve gas fields takes place and they are
gather, in other words where the presence of the concept of “Play” takes place. Once the presence of
the Petroleum system was established, we proceeded to evaluate the geological risk predicting that
the success probability could be between 0.375 and 0.183 (1:4 in average), which means a low risk
in the discovery of new gas fields. Among the integration of petro-physics data, production stories and
interactive software, it has been statistically estimated the possibility of obtaining a recourse of 1,100
MMMpc for the “Plays” of the La Casita unit and of 650 MMMpc, for the “Plays” of the Padilla y La
Virgen units. In one of the five perforated wells, it has been discovered a possible reserve (3P) of 130
MMMpc in the La Virgen’s Play and another of 50 MMMpc in La Casita’s Play, that confirm the gas
potential that has the Sub-river basin of Sabinas.
