[Summarizes an expediente growing out of a dispute between Felipe de Neve, while
governor of the Californias, and the Franciscans of San Fernando. The principal factor
in the quarrel was Neve's plan to have but one missionary at each mission, except in
the case of those near presidios, instead of two, as had always been the rule. The
Council of the Indies decided to ask for reports from secular authorities familiar with the
case, to order that excesses of the soldiery (mentioned by the friars) be checked, and to
admonish the College of San Feernando to take up like matters, in future, with the
governor directly].

with the Comandante General that as soon as certain doubts are resolved he may
proceed to erect the custodia of San Gabriel of California; says the Franciscans of
Queretaro have put hindrances in the way of his founding the custodia of New Mexico].

Sonoa, including five expedientes showing the difficulties exprerienced by the bishop of
Sonora in maintaining the custodia of Sonora and the obstacles placed in the way of his
erecting a custodia in New Mexico].

[Summarizes and comments upon the documents composing 4936; intimates that he is
opposed in his work by the new vice-custodio of the Sonora custodia and by the
Franciscans of Querétaro as regards the erection of the custodia of New Mexico; and
says they have influenced the Comandante General, so that he is in doubt about the
plans of the bishop of Sonora, or even opposed to them].
