“... I send you a copy of AGI Indiferente <strong>General</strong> 1342 Nos. 13, 14, 16, 17, which contains a<br />

sub-selection of the 1789 survey of indigenous languages of the Spanish colonies requested by<br />

Catherine of Russia. No. 17, in particular, contains American Indian material, mainly on Middle<br />

American (Mayan) languages. Subinha is to be i<strong>de</strong>ntified either as Tzeltal or as Tzotzil (or as a<br />

third closely related language) which is not extinct (or almost so) but was formerly spoken in<br />

Copanaguastla (abandoned in 1620) and subsequently (and perhaps still?) in Socoltenango,<br />

Chiapas...”<br />
