INTENDED USE
Mycotrim ® RS is a complete culture system for Mycoplasma pneumoniae
(M. pneumoniae) in human respiratory specimens.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory infections.
M. pneumoniae is the cause of primary atypical pneumonia,
often called “walking pneumonia”. It is associated with chronic
bronchitis and is thought to account for more than 20% of all
pneumonia cases.
Mycotrim RS is designed to selectively isolate and identify M.
pneumoniae in human respiratory specimens.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Each Mycotrim RS flask contains agar and broth specially formulated
to support the growth of M. pneumoniae. When the flask is
inoculated and incubated with the agar side up, the agar and broth
are separated by humid air. This creates optimal conditions for the
growth of M. pneumoniae on the agar surface. Antimicrobial discs
are added before inoculation to prevent the growth of microorganisms
other than mycoplasma.
Positive cultures of M. pneumoniae lower the pH and cause a
color change in the media. In specimens with high titers, this
color change may occur in as little as 72 to 96 hours, while in
specimens with low titers it may take 7 to 10 days. Flasks showing
no color change after 72 hours are reinoculated with the enrichment
broth in the flask. Once the media changes color, the flask is
examined microscopically (low power) for M. pneumoniae colonies
on the agar surface.
STORAGE AND STABILITY
Store all the Mycotrim RS components (fl asks, antimicrobial discs and
Dienes stain) in the original box at 2° C to 8° C.
Do not freeze.
