e on the one hand quality is a question of consistency. on the other it is a
question of constant further development. a philosophy that we have now
applied to a very special product of xal – the magazine you are holding in
your hands. after five successful years in which liGHT has established itself
as an indispensable and top-class winner of multiple design and publishing
awards (such as the coveted Red Dot award) and become part of our communication
with all partners, prospects and friends of xal, it was time to rethink
the existing and to make the good even better.
a task that we have given a clear objective. With its new concept, liGHT
should above all convey even more clearly an important aspect that has had
a decisive impact on the corporate history of xal in recent years: its extremely
successful worldwide growth and hence its sustainable internationalisation.
Nowadays, xal is at home almost right around the globe – and everywhere
that sophisticated design and extraordinary architecture meet
innovative ideas and pure living. liGHT wants to narrate this story in constantly
new ways in upcoming issues and in doing so cast its eyes everywhere
that new, exciting and inspirational aspects of these topics are waiting
to be discovered.
We have therefore deliberately chosen london as the international focal point
for launching this first, new issue of liGHT. Hardly any metropolis could be
more cosmopolitan, exciting and vibrant than this world capital of the international
design scene, as we experienced up close recently with the huge
stream of visitors to and intensive dialogue at our successful appearance at
the london aRc Show 2009.
an intensive dialogue with xal will also appear soon in our new catalogue,
which will be out from summer 2009 and available to order shortly, e.g. via
our website. more than 700 pages of quintessential lighting design which, like
the upcoming new issues of liGHT, you really shouldn’t miss.
e Since opening his legendary restaurant Hakkasan
about eight years ago, alan Yau has established
himself as a central shining light amongst
the gastronomes of asian cuisine in london. for
just about a year now, alan Yau and his 600 m 2
restaurant Sake No Hana, has also been busy
knocking old-established institutions (such as the
legendary Nobu) off their position as london’s top
Japanese addresses – and in far more than purely
culinary terms. Because as inconspicuously as the
Sake No Hana presents itself from the outside behind
the plain façade of a former 1960s london
office building, as impressively it presents itself on
the inside. Together with the client, who also
wanted a modern and authentic interior, architect
Kengo Kuma developed an interior design that, on
the one hand, is identified by modern elements
such as high walls and large window fronts, but on
the other, by a traditional Japanese framework
system of wood and bamboo called “Tokyo”,
whose intricately designed ceiling and wall design
unmistakably and subtly characterises the spatial
impression. No fewer than ten experienced Japanese
craftsmen were employed to create the spatial
sculptures of the Sake No Hana to the required
level of perfection – with the result that a modern
and invitingly elegant interpretation of a shadegiving
bamboo grove and the peaceful elegance of
a Zen garden are now to be found in the busy
heart of london.

e Since its opening in September 2008, london’s
newest mega-club, matter, located under
the roof of the o2 arena, has been the talk of the
town in an entertainment stronghold where new
clubs often fall from favour in the week after they
open. This success is partly thanks to the consistent
high-quality and innovative music strategy,
which focuses exclusively on the international
crème de la crème of the DJ and electronic music
scene. on the other hand, however, the architecture
and technology of this unique club and concert
venue also reflect the uncompromising desire
of matter’s operators (club magnates Keith Reilly
and cameron leslie, creators of the legendary
fabric) to achieve perfection, who together with
the architects of london design agency, Pentagram,
have created a superlative new club. arranged
on three levels with a total of 33,000 m 2
and a capacity of 2,600 visitors, the club’s sophisticated
detail solutions include an electronic
cloakroom system, a sound system of no fewer
than 400 individual loudspeakers, a 75,000 Watt
interactive Bodysonic dance floor (which directs
bass impulses straight into the dancer’s body)
and a state-of-the-art studio technology which
enables complex sound and video control options
and live concert broadcasts via the internet or direct
to the o2 arena. These features underscore
matter’s claim to be the ultimate club of the 21 st
century – supplemented in an almost old-fashioned
and luxurious way by the club’s own boat
service, which carries guests across the Thames
to and from the club.
e every year for two days at the beginning of
february, london becomes the centre of the international
lighting design scene: the annual aRc
Show brings together manufacturers and suppliers
from all branches of the lighting industry, international
sales and dealer partners, not to mention the
sector’s leading designers and architects, at an intensive
and creative encounter under one roof. Due
to the great success of recent years, the industry
fair held from 4-5 february 2009 was this time
moved to the larger location of earls court Two,
where the team of last year’s newly christened xal
ltd., london, presented numerous product innovations
at stand 136. a guest of the aRc Show for
the second time, xal sees the show as being an
extremely important point of access to the British
market, which the company now supports directly
through its london branch from one of the world’s
most important cities for design and architecture.
at aRc 09, xal above all presented the latest developments
in the area of leD lighting and luminaire
profiles – with plenty of visitor interest and
ideal starting conditions for the new xal branch,
as expressed with satisfaction by xal ltd. managing
director florian Schaubach, “We’ve worked in
the British market, which is very important to us,
for a long time now. The founding of our own
branch was therefore the logical thing to do and
will multiply our potential many times over. aRc 09
was in some ways our starting shot for this.”
e With no less than 150,000 m 2 of total usable
space, the Westfield Shopping centre in West
london is currently the largest inner-city shopping
centre in europe and opened in october 2008 at
the end of a six-year planning and construction
phase. The project, with a total budget of around
eUR 2.1 billion, is a joint venture between the
world’s largest shopping centre operator, Westfield
Group, and the commerzbank subsidiary,
commerz Real aG, and was designed by Westfield’s
in-house team of architects together with
international architecture greats, such as michael
Gabellini and Kimberly Sheppard (amongst others,
creators of the Top of the Rock viewing platform at
the Rockefeller center in New York). Not only the
exterior of the Westfield Shopping centre is impressive
– with its gigantic, wave-shaped glass
roof, whose energy balance was optimised with
special eco-friendly insulation materials – but
above all its interior, such as the central atrium,
which is the size of a football field. The centre is
aimed at a high-end clientele and offers space for
over 280 retailers, including a luxury zone with
premium brands such as louis Vuitton, Prada and
Gucci. in addition to several wellness and leisure
outlets, the high standards of the Westfield london
are above all underscored by the food court,
whose offering of 49 food outlets is unique in a european
shopping mall. Visually impressive here are
the extraordinary lighting solutions by xal, while
gastronomically boasting a café and restaurant
concept which is in no way orientated towards banal
fast food, but towards sophisticated cuisine
and has a total length of no less than 1.5 km –
about the same as london’s Kings Road.
michael Gabellini y Kimberly Sheppard (autores,
entre otras obras, de la plataforma panorámica
Top of the Rock del Rockefeller center de Nueva
York).
mismo centro comercial. cautivan visualmente

e a new, spectacular addition to the london
skyline has recently arisen on Broadgate, in the
heart of london’s financial district. With an overall
height of 164 metres, the office complex completed
in 2008 at 201 Bishopsgate/The Broadgate
Tower is not only the third-tallest building in the
city of london, but also shines beyond its impressive
dimensions with numerous other architectural
superlatives. for example, the tower designed by
the chicago-based architect’s office, Skidmore,
owings and merrill, has the floor plan of an elongated
parallelogram and stands on an extremely
complex, 6000-tonne construction of steel and
concrete, which spans the rail tracks of liverpool
Street Station like a raft. No less extravagant is the
tower’s aluminium and glass façade, which continues
the motif of the parallelogram vertically with its
crossed strutting and was implemented by Bavarian
façade specialist, Josef Garner GmbH, for a
budget of more than eUR 50 million. in addition to
the latest office architecture for the 5000 plus office
workplaces of The Broadgate Tower and energy-saving
and intelligent building services, the
developer, British land, also paid particular attention
to upgrading the surrounding environment:
Neighbouring finsbury avenue Square was given
an extraordinary lighting installation, with leD
strips integrated into the paving by lighting design
specialists, maurice Brill lighting Design. These
bring the square to pulsating life at night with animated
light sequences.
owings and merrill de chicago descansa
e in the mid-1990s, former war reporter Tyler
Brûlé came up with wallpaper, an innovative lifestyle
magazine concept which was one of the
most outstanding and style-setting print media
innovations of the last decade. in the middle of a
digital era in which the imminent end of printed
paper was predicted, Brûlé produced a magazine
which had promised uncompromisingly global lifestyle
topics such as travel, consumption, design,
fashion and architecture and proved that there is
still a future for classic print concepts – providing
they are produced with the level of perfection that
became Brûlé’s trademark with wallpaper. Brûlé
has now been applying the same basic principle
for exactly two years and twenty-one issues to his
newest magazine project, monocle: a news and
report magazine, which again pursues a global
principle with journalistic and designer perfection,
but this time with a greater focus on business and
politics. for example, monocle reports in brilliantly
researched detail on the global bicycle industry
and its importance for mobility of the future, on
empty shopping centres in booming china, and
gives travel tips for cafés in istanbul and music
stores in New York city. monocle, as Tyler Brûlé
simply and precisely defines his project, is a magazine
that is completely devoid of desktop journalism
and the cult of celebrity, intended for readers
who think and live globally. a philosophy that has
also recently been embodied by its own, small
monocle Shop in london, which offers handpicked
products and travel accessories.
KTm x-bow cUsTomer area, Graz/aUsTrIa
by Gobli Bauengineering (a)
e austrian two-wheeler producer KTm has been
causing an international stir recently with a project
that is as sensational as it is unique. Now, there
are not only motorbikes, but also a car bearing the
KTm brand – the x-Bow. With the new x-Bow,
KTm has in a way put its entire technology and design
know-how from the construction of sporty
two-wheelers uncompromisingly on four wheels:
Breathtaking speed and acceleration as well as
perfect handling and extraordinary design are the
identifying features of the ultra-light, high-tech
two-seater, which has no roof or doors, but possesses
the driving properties of a thoroughbred
super sports car that is suitable for racing. in line
with the x-Bow motto “Ready to Race”, the delivery
area of the production plant in Graz/St. Peter,
where the x-Bow has recently started coming off
the production line, has been designed as an extraordinary
customer and display area that succinctly
summarises the purist high-tech and racing
philosophy of the vehicle with the required archi-
tectural consistency: a special stage in front of the
technical backdrop of the production line, which
creates an appropriate setting in which to meet an
exclusive clientele – just a few hundred units of the
x-Bow will be available worldwide each year. The
x-Bow itself and its logo form the only decorative
elements of the minimalist concept, round and
arched shapes offer an exciting contrast to the
edginess of the car, the smooth surfaces in turn
reflect the shine of the painted car. in order to
leave an open view of the x-Bow’s production line
in the assembly hall adjacent to the delivery zone,
this area was spatially enclosed only on four sides:
Through a curved wall on two sides, through a colour
change in the flooring and through a ceiling of
shining elements that place the x-Bow in the right
stage lighting.
e With its uncompromising quality philosophy,
australian label aesop has acquired a special reputation
as one of the world’s leading manufacturers
of natural grooming and cosmetic products
based on herbal raw materials. aesop pushes the
design of its global stores with similar perfectionism.
These in no way correspond to a conventional,
uniform brand architecture, but instead are
designed, one by one, as something unique, with
extremely different and individual concepts from
place to place. for example, the team of architects
at march Studio designed a temporary store for
aesop in melbourne, which was manufactured entirely
out of industrial cardboard, from the complete
interior furnishing to the façade. in adelaide,
the architects created a boutique, whose ceiling is
made from a sea of thousands of recycled bottles,
which traverse the store in gently shimmering
waves. With the expansion of the label to europe,
aesop has now also opened highly distinct stores
in Paris and london, with another just recently in
Zurich. The shop design here also complies with a
consistent idea: Not one of the sales shelves rests
on the floor, but float, suspended from the ceiling,
seemingly effortlessly in the room. another intelligent
concept of aesop’s unique series of stores,
which constantly and skilfully communicates new
and subtle variants of the label’s brand identity,
based on lightness, naturalness, modernity and
clarity – and which proves that recognisability is in
no way to be equated with boring uniformity.
e The market place in St. Gallen is considered the main commercial centre
of this Swiss university town. in recent years, it has also experienced an
enormous architectural upgrade through the conversion of numerous buildings.
Seamlessly integrated into this roundelay of renewal is the specialist opticians
shop recently renovated here by Heikaus interior Design, whose design
not only reflects the entire collected experience in the area of retail and
brand store architecture, but is also proof of how important the mutual emotional
work with the customer is in the retail sector. for example, the developer’s
wish to install real stone walls was executed as a central pivot of the
overall concept. The rear wall of natural stone, together with the narrow, horizontally
integrated shelving elements, noticeably lighten the consistent, rectilinear
furnishing design of the ground floor, which is visually noted for the
spaciousness of its layout and its light, friendly ambience. in the gutted basement,
the natural stone acts mostly as a central eye-catcher, which is excitingly
contrasted by the shiny white furniture and the powerful orange-coloured
rubber floor covering. on both levels, large full-height photographs
create visually attractive accents, while an extraordinarily clear presentation
of the goods and the perfectly matched lighting provide a pleasant indoor climate.
in the shop window area, the designers went for a combination of
downlights, surface-mounted and power-rail spots. most of the product lighting
on the other hand makes use of leDs, which above all highlight the goods
in the niches with brilliant light.
“To be successful in this business, you have to love this
work. it lives on emotions, inspiration and creativity.
The special challenge exists in the symbiosis of design
f l o o r P l a n
e Satisfying functional as well as aesthetic demands is not exactly easy for
the pharmacy business, at least not in architectural terms. Things are apparently
different in South Tyrol. Here, in a new building in the centre of eppan, a
pharmacy has been built that actually meets the highest design standards.
Due to the limited floor area, a thrifty, well considered use of space was essential
for the executing architects from monovolume. The concept therefore
has its origins in every pharmacy’s holy of holies, the pharmacist’s cabinet,
whose lines penetrate all the furnishings. Shelves around the edge of the interior
were used to create copious presentation areas, whose horizontal lines
embrace and visually enlarge the space and provide a setting for a tailormade
corian counter, which seems to float as a dynamic focal point on a
band of light above the white marble terrazzo floor. Due to its unusual size for
a village pharmacy, this simultaneously enables appropriate consulting activity
and maximum discretion, while the unusual, highly curved shape prevents
it from having too powerful an effect. Pivoting shelves were tensioned between
floor and ceiling and present niches for displaying selected products
on the side facing the window. Their height was determined such that they
restrict the view from outside without lessening the generous feeling of space
or amount of light entering the building. in order to direct the attention of customers
to the mostly colourful products, the entirely white furnishings made
from painted mDf retreat into the background. Balanced lighting throughout
allows the pharmacy seemingly to disappear entirely behind its products.

e it was intended to be the very first showroom of the German Wallpaper
institute in Hamburg. it developed into a flexible presentation system, with
whose help the wallpaper collections of Germany’s largest manufacturers
can be shown in one place, a masterly staged work on the desire to change
wallpaper. The difficulty of having to portray many different patterns in a relatively
small space was dealt with by the architects of JaZZUNiQUe with a
well thought-out modular construction: Three mobile room boxes can be arranged
in various ways as required and decorated with wallpapers and décor.
each mobile module functions independently, but can also be used in
combination with others for a larger area. The spaces created in between by
the “scene-changing” produce numerous, variable spatial situations, with
each new arrangement generating new possibilities for presenting the product.
Pushing the modules compactly together creates enough space in the
showroom for presentations, workshops or seminars. While the cubes are
illuminated by accessory luminaires, which simulate special living situations
with their warm light, the integrated elements hanging on the dark side walls
have been staged through the use of direct illumination to appear as if they
are floating. in addition, light strips suspended from the ceiling give the room
depth, thereby also emphasising its longitudinal axis together with the mirror
mounted on the rear wall. especially when the remaining lighting is dimmed
at night, the effect is such that the light strips melt away to points which allow
the room to dance away into infinity through the ghost lights reflected by
the mirror.

on Sept 24 th 2008, Peter eisenman held his guest lecture “on the problem of late style” at the xal
in our time, with crucial and sometimes provocative questions such as “Do computers make design
e There are only few contemporary architects
whose work defies categorization in such a radical
way as Peter eisenman’s, a man not without reason
tagged as the great maverick of US architecture.
Not only the international architecture scene, also
media and public are struggling for words to do
justice to his creative output, both in practice as
well as a prolific theoretician, writer and teacher. at
its opening in 2006, the shape of a football stadium
he built in Phoenix, arizona was compared to a
grapefruit or a coiled rattlesnake by many, while he
himself would attribute the inspiration for the design
to the cross section of a barrel cactus. His
striking Holocaust memorial in Berlin, a 4.7 acre
stone forest of 2711 concrete stelae forming an
austerely organized yet unsettlingly disorienting
maze opened in 2005, reminded some critics of a
sombre, stylized cemetery, while others drew comparisons
to the enigmatic black monolith from
Stanley Kubricks’s mystical science fiction masterpiece
2001: A Space Odyssey. and his largest
project to date, the enormous and soon-to-be
completed city of culture of Galicia, a six building
Santiago de compostela in northwestern Spain,
has been dubbed a “magic mountain” by officials
and the public alike while being considered one of
the most remarkable fusions of building and landscape
in the history of architecture – and currently
the most gigantic building project in europe.
all these vastly different, sometimes contradictory
or even confusing and mostly futile attempts at
categorization in the end just speak for one thing:
for Peter eisenman’s ongoing and career-long success
to transcend the conventional conceptions of
architecture by replacing our familiar perceptions
of form, space or function by something completely
different and deviant. With highly conceptual
results that, by design, are often demanding,
challenging or even unsettling in both emotional
and intellectual regard, lending them an enigmatically
mesmerizing fascination. making a striking
difference is what constitutes the only reliable
common denominator in most of eisenman’s work:
a difference that, for example, hardly any visitor to
his Berlin monument to the murdered Jews of europe
– significantly located on a site across from
the German Bundestag, between the Brandenburg
Gate and Potsdam Square – could escape, experiencing
a growing feeling of disorientation, desolation
and claustrophobia while wandering about the
endless maze of grey concrete blocks. a result of
eisenman’s intention to create “a place of no
meaning”, as he once commented on the design
for the memorial. a place that will effectively break
the power of conventional media and movie images
about the Holocaust and replace them by a
deep and paradox feeling: the vague and at the
same time harrowing notion of the incomprehensible,
an overbearing apprehension of annihilation
and nonexistence – and a hardly definable, disconcerting
sense of otherness and alienation in
place of safeness and familiarity.
This striking and inherent element of profound otherness
characterizing much of eisenman’s work
has made him the probably most prominent outsider
of the US architecture scene, a lateral thinker
in both theory and practice, whose work has always
been marked by a pronounced search for
new challenges. His New York office specializes
particularly on projects of a certain problem type:
projects with difficult siting, programmatic and/or
budgetary constraints and of strategic importance
to their environment. The more difficult the conditions,
the more eisenman and his unique approach
to architecture will not only investigate the obvious

contexts and functions of a building, but will most
notably bring to light the invisible, underlying cultural,
symbolical and also psychological layers of a
project. With architectural results that will leave
lasting traces not only in a visual, functional and
physical regard, but above all also on a mental
level: an almost trademark feeling of suspense
created by immaculate yet enigmatic precision
which eisenman once described during a discussion
with an equally renowned and maverick austrian
movie director with the apt remark: „We
should make architecture like michael Haneke
makes films.”
2 3
las losas de hormigón junto a la puerta de Brandenburgo;
Painting with light: The Dutch artists’ collective PiPS:lab does this in a unique
way. Using long exposure times, the artists capture the movement of their
luminescent writing tools in a dark environment in order to create coloured
spatial objects. The spontaneity of the movement, the dynamics of the space
and the magic of the shadows are inscribed directly into the photograph
during the exposure process. The colour effects, contrasts and spatial
e Uncompromising precision is the trademark of
Styrian technology company Kiefer Technic, which
specialises in the production of top-grade stainless
steel equipment, operation theatre doors and
functional furniture in the clinical-pharmaceutical
field. a topic that Graz architect ernst Giselbrecht
used as a point of reference when designing the
company’s new showroom as an extraordinary
eye-catcher. Giselbrecht gave the south side of
the large, airy annexe, with its view over a park, a
double-skinned high-tech aluminium façade,
which to some extent embodies the company’s
trademark through its choice of material, the use
of the company’s own resources and its technically
precise character. of course, the façade impressively
communicates its technological topic
not only visually but also functionally: installed in
front of the polygonal glass façade is a structure of
112 white, perforated aluminium panels, which can
be moved into numerous positions through a complex
system of hinges, guide rails and electrical
motors as well as an electronic control system.
The façade therefore acts not only as a source of
shade and an indoor climate regulator, which can
be adjusted to the amount of incoming light and
enables a rich spectrum of lighting moods inside
the building, but at the same time is also a kinetic
sculpture, which gives the façade constantly new
faces through almost infinitely changeable and
programmable position patterns – clearly visible
proof of the competence of unique aesthetics and
functionality for the client and architect alike.
posiciones programables. Tanto para el cliente
como para el arquitecto, una nueva demostración
visual de una estética y funcionalidad únicas.
ronada con una impresionante cúpula de cristal
en el ático. Para la construcción de la cúpula, los
arquitectos confiaron en una empresa especializada
española, que envío cada elemento en un
contenedor listo para su ensamblaje. No menos
e The complete conversion of the building located
near the alster in Hamburg and used by BaT
since 1976 shows that the brand or corporate concept
manifests itself in architecture by means of
tailor-made spatial planning and at the same time
promotes communication and encounters between
employees. The foyer, whose structure has
been liberated from all its original installations and
supplemented by a large, complex structure comprising
fibreglass-reinforced concrete segments,
highlights how architecture firm foRmeReiGNiS
interpreted its instruction to redesign the 20,000
square metres or so of the overall complex, which
is spread over several floors: The “furniture”
blends into the existing situation without adhering
formally to it. “existing” and “additional” merge
into something homogenously new, in which the
lighting concept created as part of the architecture
acts as a link between the new structure and the
existing stock. for example, the downlights selected
on the basis of their graphic character form
a visual block that contrasts clearly with the freeform
elements modulated into the room via light
gaps. a clear design vocabulary encounters apparently
floating objects, in whose midst the
“house of brands” welcomes its guests with the
core corporate values. one of these core values is
open communication. in clear contrast to many
other designs, which allegedly try to prevent unproductive
employee chats in the corridors,
spaces for everyday encounters and exchange
were provided throughout the building and individual
spatial concepts developed for the individual
company areas, which satisfy the respective
communicative requirements. The choice of colours
and materials is also orientated towards the
various work processes.

e The skilful integration of 1970s architecture
into modern designs is probably considered a
long-running feature of innovative architecture.
one example of the noticeably careful treatment
of outmoded old stock is the Sparkasse Berchtesgadener
land savings bank in the town of Bad
Reichenhall. The conversion of a collection of
buildings of varying ages created a compact
headquarters with contemporary workstations. in
this way, the 235 employees who used to be distributed
amongst several buildings were brought
together in a single modern building. The plan of
architects Bolwin and Wulf was to incorporate the
regionally distinct elements of the existing building
into the new structure in order to convey a
sense of continuity and to retain the intimacy with
the overall appearance of the townscape. But although
the interventions made to the 1970s substance
were kept as minimal as possible, they
nevertheless produce a high designer effect: for
example, the heavy appearance of the sun protection
construction was replaced by large glazed
areas. in addition, two newly created internal
courtyards carry light and seasons into the building’s
interior, where all floors were freed from superfluous
fixtures and fittings. The stairwells on
the entry façade made way for full-height waterfall
walls, which make reference to the existing salt
extraction plant in the spa park. apart from their
visual effect, they are also useful as they transport
evaporative coolness into the office levels. another
homage to salt, which the town has to thank
for its rise and current status, is the canon of colour
of three different pink, violet and red tones,
which run through the entire building and quote
the natural colour spectrum of salt in transparent
and opal glazed surfaces, curtains and effect
lighting, which make salt the topic of the house at
night as well.

e When the energy sector started to supply natural gas through pipelines from the mid-1950s and
store produced surpluses underground, the hundreds of gasometers that had been built and used
across europe in the course of industrialisation became superfluous and were therefore either gradually
torn down or left to decay. an ambitious project of the Dutch architecture firm HeT architekten shows
how one of these gasometers, which are occasionally very attractive architecturally speaking, can be
converted into a modern office building, without losing its character as an urban landmark. one of the
greatest challenges is dealing with the circular shape, which is not automatically suited for use as a living
and working space. for the “Gasholder” in Naaldwijk, all installations were first deliberately built in
so that they remained recognisable as such, i.e. non-original, which noticeably encourages the natural
dialogue between the historic structure and modern installations. The penetration of daylight was also
improved by inserting a large glass frontage at ground level, which results in a lively interplay that reinforces
the contrast between artificial and natural illumination. The arrangement of the two floors was
kept conceptually and deliberately rigid: Social interaction in meeting and seminar rooms downstairs,
concentrated creation at the workplaces upstairs, where the contrast between the red floor and silver
walls is once again deliberately reinforced by ceiling lights. consequently, structures remain visible and
tangible at every turn, and awareness of the fact that this is a historic monument equipped for the future
is heightened both indoors and outdoors.
la articulación de ambas plantas: abajo, la interacción social con salas de reuniones y seminarios;
e There is one word that describes the development of leD technology particularly aptly: rapid. The
rapid pace at which computer processors developed in the 1980s is now manifesting itself in the
progress of leD technology: every six months, manufacturers present the market with new generations
of leDs that are even more powerful than their respective predecessors. The leD is set to become the
most important light source in the next few years and is bringing about radical changes for lighting technology.
The leD is already noted for having numerous advantages over traditional luminaires, such as
its extraordinarily long lifespan, very low maintenance costs, the free choice of light colour, low heat output
and miniaturisation. The main benefit of the leD is to be found in its high energy efficiency, which
enables a reduction in energy consumption and energy costs and therefore contributes to lighting that
has an energy balance ideally suited to protecting precious resources. The trend towards miniaturisation
is opening the way to new applications. The size of an leD makes it extremely space-saving. for example,
the lighting can already be integrated directly into pieces of furniture. of course, the potential of the
leD is far from exhausted and its advantages can be increased even further.
for this reason, xal is extremely keen on a future technology that has actually already become a feature
of the present. Generally speaking, not all leDs are the same. as in many areas, there are small, but fine
variations that make all the difference. of course, the difference in the quality of the leDs is not the only
thing to tip the scales in their favour; customers are increasing placing value on individuality and tailormade
lighting solutions. in order to meet this rising need, xal has also beaten a path in the leD sector,
something that is a little unusual for the luminaire manufacturer: unlike many other luminaire manufacturers,
xal has decided to purchase only ready-made leD products and to integrate ready-assembled
PcBs into its own luminaires. xal has decided to integrate all relevant development and production
stages of this new technology into its own product development and production process. With the purchase
of an ultra-modern SmD fitting plant, xal has invested massively in the leD production process.
xal works only with the best leD manufacturers and uses the latest generation of leDs without exception.
Here as well, xal goes one step further: as the graphic shows, xal divides the standard binning of
leD manufacturers into further sub-categories and additionally sorts the leDs according to the strictest
criteria at the request of the customer. This eliminates differences in brightness or colour that are identifiable
to the human eye, but which would still fall within the tolerance range of the manufacturer. The result
is maximum homogeneity of the illumination in terms of light intensity and wavelength. for areas in
which maximum colour reproduction is required, xal offers leDs with Ra values (colour reproduction
index) of more than 90%.
xal develops the PcBs and controls itself within its own electronics development department. xal can
therefore not only offer PcBs in standard formats, but can also develop them in the desired dimensions.
The separations between the individual points of light can also be set as required. The ability to control
the leD electronically guarantees a high degree of individual design freedom.
The finely pre-sorted leDs are subsequently placed in the SmD fitting machine onto PcBs that are often
developed to customer requirements. xal integrates the individually assembled PcBs into the desired
luminaire, thereby also achieving an extraordinarily high level of in-house production in leD manufacturing.
This makes it possible for xal to rapidly develop and produce special solutions to individual requirements
in the leD segment as well. limited production runs can be developed and produced just as
easily as large series. The customer gets everything from one source and can have a say in the quality of
the product according to its own wishes.
in order to guarantee the customer identical subsequent deliveries, information on which customer has
received which PcB with which leDs is saved for later use. This ensures clear identification of the binning,
the flux and Ra values of the supplied luminaires and allows potential deviations in the illumination
to be excluded from the word go.
e Kiltro is the chilean word for mongrel, stray or
bastard – a description that the team of architects
from Supersudaka chose quite deliberately as the
name for an outlandish housing project. “Pretty
much everything kept on changing during the execution
of this project: the plan, the surface area,
the building approval, the contractor and the
tradesmen – even the view! our entire approach
was therefore based more on errors than on certainties,”
was the architects’ highly ironic comment
on how the project went. The survival cleverness
of the building, which is the result of the fast reaction
to a wide range of constantly changing situations
during construction, has not only given the
building character, but also an elegance that is as
unique as it is functional. a modern steel frame,
which encompasses the central housing box with
open patio (which enables roof access via a ladder),
is enveloped by a warm, organic wood and
glass skin, whose multi-angled roofline outlandishly
reflects the character of the surrounding
landscape and the sloping site. an extremely
homely, light-drenched platform for the breathtaking
view, which is offered by the full-size glass
front or directly from the spacious terrace. “We
don’t want to change the world through architecture,
we want to change architecture itself,” is the
descriptive motto that appears on the flag of Supersudaka
architects – a motto that opens up
plenty of room for unusual solutions like Kiltro
e When an industrial designer is an enthusiastic
motorcyclist, has a preference for the nostalgic
and is also at home in the model eco-land of
california, only then can such a unique mode of
transport as the Derringer cycle come into being.
inspired by historic light-weight motorbikes, as
were specially built by legendary manufacturers
such as indian or Harley Davidson for the uncommonly
popular track races in the USa of the
1920s, adrian Van anz developed a modern, ecologically
clever vehicle that is intended less for
speed than it is for rather more environmentally
friendly propulsion – and which pleases the eye
hugely. The result is a hybrid between a bicycle
and a mini-motorbike, which with its consistently
reduced retro design has not only become a
small work of art, but also extremely thrifty. The
performance data promise a sensational 180
miles per gallon of petrol (about 1.3 litres per 100
km) when out and about with the air-cooled, 50
cm 3 , one-cylinder, four-stroke engine, which also
easily meets the euro 2 emissions standard and
accelerates the Derringer cycle by means of a
“No queremos cambiar
centrifugal clutch and bicycle freewheel to a respectably
swift 35 miles per hour (about 55 km/h).
of course, the user can also operate the pedals,
which extends the range almost indefinitely, depending
on muscle power. The only downside is
that registration in austria for example, unlike
sunny california, will most likely require 1:1 approval
and a red moped plate.
architects & lighting Design:
Najjar & Najjar architekten, Vienna
e How to deal with a 1980s villa, whose greatest disadvantage is that the
particularly lovely view afforded by its south-facing situation is not shown to
its full advantage because of the standard boxy construction of the time? according
to the particularly progressive concept of architects Najjar & Najjar,
the nooks and crannies of the spatial arrangement and a lighting situation,
which was generally not the best, was to give way to a new generosity. on
both floors, therefore, the walls were first torn down, where possible. movement
in the resulting space is provided by a large corian wave that runs
through the entire building and not only integrates a wide range of functions,
but itself becomes a table, then the lighting and finally a bar. it combines ceiling
with seat and recliner elements, making it an intermediary between the
zoned rooms. The entire interior design was borrowed from yacht design, allowing
all functions to disappear into the walls and floor. The surfaces of fitted
cupboards and walls, into which a large aquarium as well as more mundane
uses such as closets, storage rooms and toilets are set, were designed
from satinated glass and backlit with leDs. Various moods can be created,
depending on the colour of the leD strips. The entire lighting concept is
strongly orientated on the guidelines of stage design. Whether the corian
wave, a shower cubicle or the kitchen sink set in solid labradorite: light is
used to create lightness, by illuminating the free-standing object so as to create
a floating effect and to lose the sense of remoteness.

e a narrow, very steeply sloping site, which was
once considered impossible to build on, served
not only as the starting position, but also as the
conceptual and structural impetus for the housing
project awarded the Developer’s Prize 2008 and
situated on an urban and topographically imposing
location on the edge of matrei. The terraced,
four-storey building complex is called SUN ii. it
incorporates the wide-ranging elevations of the
terrain, while its red façade quotes and at the
same time reinterprets the local appearance of traditional
Tyrolean wooden buildings, through which
the building enters into an exciting dialogue with
its surroundings, without trying to cosy up to
them. The basic principle of the building’s concept
was to infuse the entire complex with openness,
communicative areas and flowing, light connective
units. in this way, the building, with a total of ten
apartments stacked above the ground floor comprising
offices, lounge and event rooms, has been
expanded in a second phase of development by
an additional structure accommodating a wellness
area and a further six apartments. This created a
large open space between the two buildings,
which acts as a communication and meeting
place. Due to the terraced configuration of the
building, all units also have their own balconies or
loggias. The interior is arranged into homogeneous
units. all the furniture has been specially designed
and individually adapted to the apartments,
with a maximum of lighting elements integrated
into the furnishing and ceiling components. The
lighting therefore acts as a substantial element of
the design, while rough concrete corresponds with
installations and furniture in bright colours.
…develop an architecture whose force field is generated
from the interaction of a calming place and spatial
dynamics, whose flow of movement and oscillations
stimulate people and challenge them haptically and
visually.
…design buildings that flow around, wrapping people
between concealment and exposure, between
expressiveness and peace.
