8 Mayo/May 15, 2013 - Junio/June 18, 2013 La Latino Community Network se está volviendo una red de base vibrante. El equipo central se enorgullece y responsabiliza por el éxito del grupo, que a vez ha creado la oportunidad para un verdadero desarrollo de liderazgo. El viernes, 26 de abril, la Latino Community Network llevó a cabo su primer evento. Este evento fue diseñado para llegar a individuos específicos y alentar su participación activa en la red de trabajo. Más de 50 miembros de la comunidad se hicieron presentes como también tres miembros del consejo de administración de Port Chester y el supervisor de la municipalidad de Rye. El evento, llevado a cabo en la iglesia St. Peter’s Church fue un gran éxito. Los residentes pudieron reunirse y representar culturas latinas diversas. El grupo fue separado en mesas y se les hicieron algunas preguntas acerca de ellos, Port Chester, y las mejoras de la comunidad. Hubo una retroalimentación positiva de los asistentes, desde sugerencias muy prácticas hasta algunas ideas personales. El grupo socializó después de la inspiradora presentación de Luis Yumbla, uno de los líderes del equipo de la red de trabajo. La Latino Network planea reunir a los residentes para aumentar su participación en los eventos de la comunidad tales como Port Chester Fest, Family U, Port Chester Pride Day, como también la participación en varios otras organizaciones de la comunidad y de los adultos mayores. En 1996, el Consejo de Servicios Comunitarios fundó la Port Chester Latino Community Network como una respuesta a los años de preocupación por la creciente población hispana y la falta de proveedores de servicio hispanohablantes. The core team feels proud and accountable for the success of the group, which in turn has created the opportunity for real leadership development. On Friday, April 26, the Latino Community Network held its first event. This event was designed to reach out to specific individuals and encourage their active participation in the network. Over 50 community members attended as well as three Port ChesterTrustees and the Rye Town Supervisor. The event, held at St. Peter’s Church was a great success. Residents were able to come together as a community representing Latino diverse cultures. The group was separated in tables and were asked some core questions about themselves, Port Chester, and community improvement. There was positive feedback from those in attendance, ranging from very practical suggestions to some personal ideas. The group socialized after the inspiring presentation of Luis Yumbla, one of the network’s team leaders. In 1996, the Council for Community Services created the Port Chester Latino Community Network as a response to years of concern for the growing Hispanic population and the lack of Spanish speaking service providers. Since then, the network had its ups and downs but the council stood firm in their support. The Port Chester Latino Community Network is becoming a vibrant, grassroots network. The core team has taken tremendous pride and accountability for the success of the group, which in turn has created the opportunity for real leadership development. Last year, the Latino Community Network identified Hispanic local leaders who could share information, give a precise perspective of the community needs, and unite the people to build a stronger community. The organization is also exploring other types of leaderships that have been designed specifically for populations similar to that of Port Chester. These types of leaderships have been very successful in other communities and have allowed residents to understand the most efficient methods to achieve a positive change in the community. The Council is also working close to the “Port Chester Votes” to help the residents of all nationalities understand the process of voting and the value of participation. The organization “Port Chester Fest” was another example of the way which the Council is trying to reach the Latino population, such as various shows that represent the cultures and traditions of Latin America. En la Mamaroneck High School, los estudiantes quienes estén buscando trabajo para el verano tienen la ayuda de la oficina de Y.E.S. (Youth Employment Service – Servicio de empleo para jóvenes) la cual les proporciona a los estudiantes buscando empleo los nombres de posibles empleadores. Y.E.S. es una agencia sin fines de lucro que ayuda a los estudiantes de Larchmont, Mamaroneck y Rye Neck a encontrar un empleo a tiempo parcial para Carreras - Careers Summer jobs/work experience at Mamaroneck High School By Dr. Anthony T. Minotti and Maria Elena Garcia Carullo As summer approaches, students look forward to the vacation from schoolwork, and those old enough to work look for summer employment. At Mamaroneck High School, students looking for a summer job have the help of the Y.E.S.(Youth Employment Service) office which provides students seeking employment with the names of prospective employers. Y.E.S. is a non-profit agency that helps students in Larchmont, Mamaroneck, and Rye Neck to find part-time employment for after school and the summer. The Y.E.S: office is housed in Mamaroneck, but it is an independent organization that works with the District but has its own board of directors. It was incorporated in 1965. It is staffed by Executive Director, Mrs. Sudeshna Banks, and community volunteers. The office is open during the school year when school is in session, daily from 10:00am to 2:45pm- Y.E.S. works with students ages 14-21. In order to look for a job through the Y.E.S. office, a student must be registered with the office; in the case of students under the age of 18, the parent´s signature is required. Students seeking a job as a babysitter must have two references, and those wishing to work as tutors, must have faculty approval. Since Y.E.S. is a non-profit organization, it does not charge the student a fee for finding a job nor the employer for finding a student to fill an opening. Y.E.S. is supported by the school district, the municipalities, and donations from individuals. In providing a service to students seeking employment and persons seeking to employ young people, Y.E.S. is helping prepare students for the future work force. For a student, having a job and earning some money helps the student feel good about himself/herself, helps the student be independent, gain self-confidence, and develop a good work ethic. Jobs are available in several standard categories, such as babysitters, hostess helpers, tutors, computer assistants, entertainers, home maintenance workers, office helpers. There are also opportunities for students who may have a special talent. Usually, the jobs are temporary, but some become permanent. This year there have been two hundred new job offers, in addition to offers that continued from last year. On Fridays, with the help of Roseanne Amoils, a volunteer life coach, the Y.E.S. office is available to work with students who need help or have questions about preparing a resumé, going for an interview, knowing what to wear, etc. Additionally, the office provides helpful guides, such as “May I Help You Party…? *Do’s and Don’t’s ** Techniques and Tips” Y.E.S. will recommend a pay rate, but the ultimate agreement is between the student and the employer. To ensure safety and security, both student and employer complete an information form. Y.E.S. also obtains feedback from both students and employers. La oficina de Y.E.S. está ubicada en la Mamaroneck High School, pero es una organización independiente que trabaja con el Distrito pero que tiene su propia junta directiva. Fue instituida en el 1965.
