Pinceladas <strong>de</strong> historia Hacia el número real El concepto <strong>de</strong> número y su uso, que resulta tan familiar hoy para todos, se elaboró <strong>de</strong> forma lenta. Entre todos los matemáticos que han intervenido en la evolución <strong>de</strong> la matemática, posiblemente el más famoso en la teoría <strong>de</strong> números es Fermat (1601-1665), que se consi<strong>de</strong>ra su creador. La conjetura <strong>de</strong> Fermat dice que no es posible encontrar cuatro números naturales positivos x, y, z, n con n > 2 tales que x n + y n = z n . En 1994, Andrea Wiles encontró una prueba completa <strong>de</strong> la conjetura. En el siglo XIX los matemáticos alemanes Weierstrass, Cantor y De<strong>de</strong>kind, entre otros, culminaron el estudio <strong>de</strong>l número axiomatizando el concepto <strong>de</strong> número real. Evolución <strong>de</strong>l <strong>álgebra</strong> El <strong>álgebra</strong> nace entre los babilonios y los egipcios. Los primeros llegaron a usar un cálculo muy <strong>de</strong>sarrollado y a resolver algunas ecuaciones lineales y cuadráticas; los egipcios también resolvían ecuaciones, como aparece en el papiro <strong>de</strong> Rhind, también llamado papiro <strong>de</strong> Ahmes por ser el escriba Ahmes quien lo copió en el 1650 a. C. En el pueblo griego sobresalió Diofanto <strong>de</strong> Alejandría (siglo III, período grecorromano), que resolvió ecuaciones y sistemas lineales y no lineales que posteriormente se han llamado diofánticas. Es necesario recordar a Hipatia (370-415), astrónoma, filósofa y matemática, consi<strong>de</strong>rada la primera mujer matemática. Se convirtió en maestra en el Museo, institución <strong>de</strong>dicada a la investigación y la enseñanza que había sido fundada por Tolomeo, y se hizo muy popular como matemática. Ganó tal reputación que al Museo asistían estudiantes <strong>de</strong> Europa, Asia y África a escuchar sus enseñanzas sobre la <strong>Aritmética</strong> <strong>de</strong> Diofanto. Escribió varios documentos, entre ellos Sobre el Canon Astronómico <strong>de</strong> Diofanto, don<strong>de</strong> se habla <strong>de</strong> ecuaciones <strong>de</strong> 1 er y 2º grado. Los matemáticos indios y árabes resolvieron ecuaciones <strong>de</strong> 1 er y 2º grado. El más conocido fue Al-Khuwarizmi, quien llegó a resolver ecuaciones <strong>de</strong> segundo grado completas. En el Renacimiento hay un avance en el <strong>de</strong>sarrollo <strong>de</strong>l <strong>álgebra</strong>. Niccolo Tartaglia resolvió la ecuación x 3 + ax = b y reveló su solución a Gerolamo Cardano, quien la publicó en su libro Ars Magna. Más tar<strong>de</strong>, en la segunda mitad <strong>de</strong>l siglo XVI, Vieta, que es conocido como el iniciador <strong>de</strong>l <strong>álgebra</strong> simbólica, hizo gran<strong>de</strong>s avances en la resolución <strong>de</strong> ecuaciones <strong>de</strong> 3 er y 4º grado. En 1824, el matemático Abel <strong>de</strong>mostró que no hay fórmulas <strong>de</strong> los coeficientes <strong>de</strong> ecuaciones <strong>de</strong> grado 5 o mayor que <strong>de</strong>n su solución.
