1.1 LO QUE SE HA DICHO DE BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS Y SU RELACIÓN
CON EL INICIO DEL TRÁFICO DE ESCLAVOS AFRICANOS HACIA AMÉRICA:
MÁS ALLÁ DE LA CONDENA Y LA APOLOGÍA
En la lista de eventos sobre la esclavitud con la cual David Brion Davis comienza su libro
Inhumane Bondage. The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the New World (2006), encontramos la
siguiente afirmación: “1518: Bartolomé de Las Casas, an ardent defender of Indian rights, calls
for large importations of African slaves in order to help save Native Americans” (xi). Esta
afirmación es reiterada por Davis en dos pasajes más de su texto (73, 98). En el segundo de estos
pasajes, Davis afirma: “As early as 1516 two of the most humane and sensitive witnesses to the
horrors of the New World, Licenciado Zuazo and Bartolomé de Las Casas, “protectors of the
Indians,” called for the sparing of Indian lives, especially in the mines, by importing many more
African slaves. For twenty-five years Las Casas saw the importation of black slaves as the
solution for the Spaniards’ oppression of Indians.” (98) En una nota aclaratoria que acompaña
esta afirmación, Davis afirma que Las Casas se arrepintió de estas peticiones de esclavos negros
concebidas como estrategia para proteger a los nativos americanos. Sin embargo, este
arrepentimiento de Las Casas, continúa Davis, no fue publicado sino hasta 1951 y no existe
indicación de que Las Casas haya condenado públicamente la esclavización de negros, pedido su
