§2. Las declaraciones que expusimos en §1 señalan de manera precisa el contenido
nuclear del Humanismo Secular; este se puede caracterizar por medio de tres tesis
relevantes:

(TH1) Una apelación a la ciencia/racionalidad como autoridad central en el
reconocimiento y resolución de problemas y toma de decisiones públicas i.e.
“....advocating the methods of reason, science...” (H1), “...the building of a more
humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the
spirit of reason and free inquiry…” (H2), “…advocates the application of the
methods of science and free inquiry to the problems of human welfare… rational
means of addressing the challenges of our times.” (H3 #2/#7).
(TH2) Una noción omnicomprensiva de democracia, fundada en un supuesto stock
de derechos humanos universales que serían trascendentes a las formas de
gobierno i.e. “...advocating the methods of...democracy...” (H1) “....Humanism is a
democratic and ethical life stance...” (H2), “It holds that democracy and human
development are matters of right. The principles of democracy and human rights
can be applied to many human relationships and are not restricted to methods of
government.” (H3).
(TH3) Un rechazo sistemático a toda manifestación religiosa o profesión de fe que
funja de fuente de autoridad moral o como fuente de sentido vital i.e. “....greater
good of all humanity in this natural world...” (H1), “It is not theistic, and it does not
accept supernatural views of reality.” (H2), “…Humanism ventures to build a world
on the idea of the free person responsible to society, and recognizes our
dependence on and responsibility for the natural world.” (H3).
Es claro que TH3 es una posición naturalista que depende de TH1: es el pensamiento
crítico/indagación libre (no menor que el nombre de una de las revistas más antiguas del
Humanismo sea Free Inquiry) el que mostraría el carácter vacuo de las religiones
reveladas como proveedoras de certeza moral y de explicación última, y por ende el
Humanismo Secular se podrá ofrecer como “... a response to the widespread demand for
an alternative to dogmatic religión,” (H3#5). Estas tesis refuerzan la vinculación del
Humanismo Secular con el materialismo ilustrado y la revisión histórico-crítica de las
religiones reveladas, y en esa dirección la Declaración de Ámsterdam está llena de
consideraciones inmanentistas. Igualmente en ese sentido es relevante la obra de Paul
Kurtz quién vinculó explícitamente el Humanismo Secular con la configuración del llamado
escepticismo científico –al que caracteriza en varias obras, especialmente The New
