70 Editorial UnQ SERIE DIGITAL 10 / CIEnCIA y TECnoLoGíA recombinantes a determinados tejidos diana. solo restaría incorporar en sus genomas la secuencia del gen terapéutico y así, la “jeringa” ya estaría completa y a la espera de su administración. si bien es cierto que la terapia génica es una aproximación muy prometedora, todavía restan muchas investigaciones para que sea una tecnología de amplia aplicación médica. CoNClusioNes en nuestro planeta existe una gran cantidad de virus. algunos de ellos nos afectan, porque les aportamos el ambiente adecuado para su correcta multiplicación. sin embargo, existen otros para los cuales nuestros cuerpos no resultan apropiados como suministro de insumos y energía. ¿Por qué estudiarlos si no nos enferman? ¿Para qué podría servir este conocimiento? Comprender los mecanismos biológicos que posibilitan la vida en todas sus peculiares formas resulta útil por sí mismo, ya que permite un mejor entendimiento de la naturaleza. Pero también, esa información puede ser aplicada en el diseño de nuevas tecnologías que impacten favorablemente en alguna actividad humana. el ejemplo de los baculovirus es suficiente para justificar los porqués involucrados en su estudio y caracterización. aprovechando que estas entidades infectan insectos, y que estos invertebrados son plagas de nuestros cultivos, se han desarrollado estrategias de biocontrol que mejoran los procesos agrícolas. los baculovirus son, también, excelentes plataformas para la expresión y producción de proteínas en contextos eucariotas. de hecho, muchas vacunas y agentes terapéuticos son generados mediante su uso. y además, se estudian para proponerlos como vehículo para la terapia génica, entre otras tantas e interesantes aplicaciones. un virus puede ser un problema para la humanidad, pero quizá otro termine aportando soluciones. la virología actual trata de conocerlos, entenderlos y utilizarlos. en este terreno, el área de investigación que se focaliza en los patógenos que afectan a los insectos promete ser una usina generadora de nuevas y múltiples tecnologías.
