18 Editorial UnQ SERIE DIGITAL 10 / CIEnCIA y TECnoLoGíA como un lugar adecuado para lograr su multiplicación. estos virus emergentes toman de sorpresa a los sistemas sanitarios humanos, dado que el conocimiento biológico que se tiene sobre ellos es menor respecto de aquellos patógenos que nos han acompañado desde hace siglos, con la consecuente menor disponibilidad de estrategias preventivas y terapéuticas. Como se ha mencionado, el avance del hombre sobre nuevos territorios, y la explotación de los recursos que allí se encuentran o producen, con la posible modificación de esos ambientes naturales, suelen ser disparadores de estos fenómenos de emergencia. en particular, el virus Junín cae dentro de este grupo de entidades que poseen un hospedador natural donde se reproducen, pero que también pueden infectar al ser humano. si bien sus efectos económicos y sanitarios son de índole local, el estudio de este virus es importante, no solo para controlar su desarrollo en el área involucrada, sino también porque, a causa de los efectos de la globalización de bienes y personas, cualquier patógeno emergente debe ser considerado como una amenaza para toda la humanidad. en función de ello, numerosos grupos de investigación, nacionales e internacionales, han enfocado sus objetivos y esfuerzos en comprender cómo es el ciclo viral, cuáles son los marcadores genéticos asociados a la virulencia y la atenuación, y cuál es el rol de cada una de las proteínas virales. en tanto, otros se han centrado en el desarrollo de sistemas de diagnóstico, en el diseño de mejores estrategias de prevención, y en la evaluación de agentes terapéuticos antivirales que posibiliten una pronta recuperación de la enfermedad. sin dudas, la emergencia viral se repetirá en la humanidad una y otra vez, ocasionando brotes, epidemias e incluso pandemias de enfermedades infecciosas nunca antes estudiadas. ante este escenario, no cabe duda de que resulta trascendente la investigación y la caracterización del viroma animal (conjunto de virus que circulan en el reino animal), dado que, en cualquier momento, un patógeno que naturalmente infecta a un organismo particular (nuestras mascotas, los animales de granja, o los insectos urbanos, por ejemplo), puede terminar reproduciéndose en nuestras células y provocarnos una nueva enfermedad. ante esta incertidumbre, la generación de conocimiento es nuestra mejor arma para dar batalla a cualquier desafío biológico que ponga en riesgo nuestra supervivencia en el planeta.
