Siempre , ó cafi fiempre da traslado á los que lo dicen, fin tomar cofa por fu cuenta: Dicunt, ferunt, traiunt, C"c. y muchas veces» ¡expreffa en patticulat el Autor. 39 Mas como fon pocos los qué leen á Plinio efi Plinio , si folo en las Infelices copias, que hicieron <strong>de</strong> el tantos charlatanes, y embufteros, creyéndole comuna mente, que tienen por autor á Plinio las ridiculas ficcia-5 toes que le atribuyen, ha llegado efte gran<strong>de</strong> Autor a ¡pa<strong>de</strong>cer la ignominiofa Yulgar opinión <strong>de</strong> poco verídico , ó nada fincero. 40 Lo peor es (quinera callarlo-, y el fanto <strong>de</strong>fengás ño me manda <strong>de</strong>cirlo) que no folo Secretiftas, y Charlan tañes han puefto á Plinio en efta mala opinión , mas aun Efcritores <strong>de</strong> muy diferente nota. En quantos eferitos Phílofophicos, en quantos Sermones im-preffos, y aun en libros <strong>de</strong> Ethica, y Myftica, fe ha hallado citado Plinio, como legitimo autor <strong>de</strong> tales patrañas ¡Supongo, que los mas le citan con buena fee,. porque le hallaron citado en otros. Pero Dios nos libre <strong>de</strong> que a un Predicadorcillo <strong>de</strong> los triviales le venga bien para fimil, ó para alufion, alguna <strong>de</strong> las quimeras, que <strong>de</strong>fprecia Plinio. que no <strong>de</strong>xará <strong>de</strong> encasarla á la fombra <strong>de</strong> fu autoridad , como afirmada por él. 41 Otra ocafion dd<strong>de</strong>fcrédito <strong>de</strong> Plinio es la muí-, •citud <strong>de</strong> prodigios naturales ( en gran parte falfos) que refiere en fu Hiftoria, efpecialmente <strong>de</strong> gentes monñruofas, y <strong>de</strong> raras qualída<strong>de</strong>s ,. como Pygmeos, hombres fin cabeza , y con los ojos en los hombros ; otros con cabe-i za canina , otros con un ojo folo, y effe colocado enla frente; ocros con los pies vuelcos ateas; ocros con dos pupilas en cada °¿9 * otros <strong>de</strong> pies tan gran<strong>de</strong>s?que echados I '.DISCURSO SEGUNDÓ». *" Toí dos fe háCíh fombra á todo d cuerpo cóh ellol; otros queveen mejor <strong>de</strong> noche que <strong>de</strong> dia; nación encera <strong>de</strong> hermaphroditas ; gente , que folo fe fuftenta <strong>de</strong> olores; otra , don<strong>de</strong> todos los individuos fon fafeinantes , &c. La primera, porque al pie <strong>de</strong> cada noticia <strong>de</strong> aquella claffe expreffa el Autor <strong>de</strong> don<strong>de</strong> la <strong>de</strong>rivó. Lanfio le dá el titulo <strong>de</strong> Bibliotbecario <strong>de</strong> ¡aNaturakza.hisgela Policiano le iluftra con los <strong>de</strong> ColeSlor <strong>de</strong> todas las cofas memorables. Juez fupremo <strong>de</strong> los ingenios, Cenfor agudo , Admira-dor dijereto.
