La fegunda , que erró menos que todos los <strong>de</strong>más Philofóphos Gentiles. Lo primero, fobre confiar <strong>de</strong> lo que díximos arriba <strong>de</strong> la fobríedad, y continencia <strong>de</strong> Epicuro» fe prueba con fus mifmos eferitos. Entre tos pocos, que por la d¡ií-_ gencía <strong>de</strong> Diogenes Laercio fe nos han refervado, eftá fu Carta á Meneceo, don<strong>de</strong> expone toda fu dodrina mota l , y en ella claramente explica, y aun inculca, que el <strong>de</strong>leite , que pone por conftitutivo <strong>de</strong> la felicidad, es únicamente el que refulta dc la falud , ó indolencia <strong>de</strong>l cuerpo , y <strong>de</strong> la tranquilidad <strong>de</strong>l animo, con exclufion pofitiva <strong>de</strong> todos los placeres vedados. Nótenle efpe-i cialmente eftas palabras fuyas , en que rechaza juntamente la maligna interpretación , que ignorantes , y émulos daban á fu dodrina: Conftat igitur, quanda voluptatem, beata vita dicimusfinem,non intelligere nos eas voluptates, qua funt virorum luxu difftuentium% aut aliorum etiam , quatenus fpecHantur in ipfa a¿lio-_ ne fruendi, qua nimirum fenfus jucundé , duiciterque afficitur, veluti quiddam ignorantes , aut d nohis difa fentientcs, aut alioquin adverfum nos male affeSli in-, terpretantur ; fed illud dumtaxat intelligimus , non doleré corpore , ac animo non perturbar.. Siqui<strong>de</strong>m non eompotaliones, eomeffationefique perpetua , non ipfapue¿ rorum, mulierumque confuetudo , non pifeium <strong>de</strong>licia.aut quacumqua alia menfa lautioris cupedia jucundam vitam pariunt, fed qua cum fobrietate, ferenoque a<strong>de</strong>oanimo, e¿ ratio a caufas t wr juid' eligendum , fm gieth DISCURSO SEGUNDÓ; 93 g\endumvefit,inveftigans, ac opiniones abigens, oh quas plurima mentes oceupat perturbatio. 31 Efta dodrina no conduce á <strong>de</strong>for<strong>de</strong>n alguno en la vida, porque la falud <strong>de</strong>l cuerpo, y ferenidád <strong>de</strong>l animo licitamente pue<strong>de</strong>n apetecerfe, y varones muy efpirituales pofitivamente <strong>de</strong>fean , y procuran una, y otra; Es fin embargo errada , por conftituir el ultimo fin , ó fuprema felicidad en ellas; mas efte error es comun a todos los Philofóphos Gentiles , pues todos la colocaron en objetos criados. Por otra parce digo, que el <strong>de</strong> Epicuro es el menor <strong>de</strong> todos los etrores, que huvo en efta materia , porque por lo menos dió en el blanco <strong>de</strong> la felicidad (llamémosla afsi) fublúnar , y ni aun efte acertaron los <strong>de</strong>más Philofóphos. Porque coníi<strong>de</strong>refe un hombre dorado <strong>de</strong> todas aquellas ventajas, en que los <strong>de</strong>más colocaban la felicidad , riquezas , honores, aplaufo , fabidutia , &c. podrá con todas ellas paffar una vida infe.-cifsiina,y miferrima, porque no folo cada una <strong>de</strong> por si, peto ni aun todas juntas le in<strong>de</strong>mnizan <strong>de</strong> mil aflicciones, que pue<strong>de</strong>n ocafionar innumerables acci<strong>de</strong>ntes adverfos. Por fabio, rico, y po<strong>de</strong>rofo que fea, no podrá evitar qae fe le muera el amigo; que le fea infiel la muger ; que falgan eftupidos , ó mal incli-i nados los hijos; que le muerdan los envidiofos-, &c. Pero con lograr precífamente lo que Epicuro preterí-' dia , falud <strong>de</strong>l cuerpo , y ferenidád <strong>de</strong>l animo , queda el hombre fuera <strong>de</strong> toda mileria. Suceda io que fucediere,-. como fe conferve el animo fereno , fe pue<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>cir que es feliz el fugeto, pues no pa<strong>de</strong>ce alguna aflicción , q congoja. 32 Acafo me opondrán como preferible á Ia<strong>de</strong> Epicuro, lá íencencia <strong>de</strong> Zenon , y los Stoicos, que colocaban la felicidad en la pradica <strong>de</strong> la virtud. Digo que efta dodrina es <strong>de</strong> bello fonido ; pero faifa, y ridicula en el fondo. Yo tengo creído, que los Stoicos fueron los menos haceros entre todos los Philofóphos.
