A Message
from the
Director
In February of this year the Donald
Judd retrospective opened at the
Tate Modern in London, coinciding
with the 10th anniversary of Judd’s
death. Many of his followers and
admirers had been waiting a long
time for such an exhibition. The last
comparable overview exhibitions
took place in 1988 at the Whitney
Museum in New York, and in
1993—just a few weeks before his
death—at the Museum Wiesbaden
in Germany. Sir Nicholas Serota’s
selection of works for London and
their installation in 11 rooms at the
Tate has awakened new interest in
Judd’s work and generated enthusiasm
and far-reaching response in
the media (see the report and press
comments on p. 61). After the London
presentation the show traveled
to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-
Westfalen in Düsseldorf and from
there it will go to the Kunstmuseum
Basel, where it will close on January
9, 2005. The 250-page catalog is
the most comprehensive and informative
publication on Donald Judd
in existence; in addition to a detailed
biography, it contains texts on
various aspects of his life and work,
as well as on all the works included
in the exhibition.
Although the retrospective presented
an overview of Judd’s creative output
from 1960 to his death in 1994,
there was an important part of his
life that it just couldn’t communicate:
Judd’s Marfa. In the early 1970s
Judd came to this remote part of
West Texas to establish a new base
(in the so-called Mansana de Chinati);
the planning for this ultimately
led to the idea of the Chinati Foundation.
What Judd went on to create
over the years in Marfa is, in the
best sense of the word, indescribable.
His collection of art and artifacts;
his wide-ranging interests reflected
in his extensive library; his
precise, highly individual placing of
objects—be they valuable works of
art or kitchen utensils—are just some
of the many telling facets of Judd’s
unique sensibility. And it was his ambition
to combine these different
facets into a living heterogeneous
Un mensaje de
la directora
En febrero del presente año se inauguró
la retrospectiva de la obra de Donald
Judd en el Museo Tate de Arte Moderno
de Londres, en conmemoración
del décimo aniversario de la muerte del
artista.
whole, with architecture as the frame.
Judd was stubbornly individual
enough to create his own style; none
of his houses—including the decor
and furnishings—looks like the continuation
of something already familiar.
His sensitivity to color and form
and how these are combined was incomparable
and incomparably sure,
and in Marfa we find ourselves face
to face with a truly genuine creativity.
With just a few deft moves he
could turn banal buildings into remarkable
structures, without ever
wavering from his principle of neither
eradicating a building’s history
nor embarking on unnecessary destruction.
Judd created two masterpieces for
the Chinati Foundation: the 15 concrete
pieces placed out in the open
and the 100 aluminum pieces installed
in two former artillery sheds,
which Judd had adapted to fit their
new purpose. I investigated the making
of these two groups of works and
put together details regarding the
very different creative processes that
led to their final outcome (see p. 45).
In each case the process shows the
level of care that Judd took at every
step along the way. Chinati was
founded on such a clear concept that
one can be forgiven for imagining
that Judd knew from the outset which
installations should go into which
buildings. In fact, he took his time
over the crucial decisions and developed
a concept not only to suit his
own installations but also those of his
friends John Chamberlain and Dan
Flavin. He was in favor of museums
dedicated to the work of one artist;
he felt that only by having access to
substantial presentations of an
artist’s œuvre could one really begin
to understand that artist’s work. He
also felt that large-scale installations
of this kind were essential to the concept
of Chinati, although it was never
his intention to appear here alone;
he wanted to enter into a dialogue
with fellow artists. Flavin and Chamberlain
were his first companions;
later they were joined by Claes Oldenburg
and Coosje van Bruggen,
Ilya Kabakov, Roni Horn, Richard
Long, and Ingólfur Arnarsson, all of
whom enriched the collection with
works that were, for the most part,
created especially for Chinati.
Various projects with yet more artists
were planned while Judd was still
alive, but were unrealized when he
died. In 1995 we were able to install
a selection of poems by Carl
Andre, which Judd had become very
interested in when he saw the sensa-
2
sas—ni la decoración ni los muebles—
parece ser la continuación de nada ya
conocido, y su sensibilidad ante el color
y la forma, y las combinaciones de
ambos, fue incomparable e incomparablemente
certera y en Marfa nos encontramos
de frente con la auténtica
creatividad. Con tan sólo unos cuantos
toques podía convertir un edificio común
y corriente en una construcción
asombrosa, sin sacrificar nunca su ideal
de conservar la historia de un edificio
ni perpetrar una destrucción innecesaria.
Judd creó dos obras maestras para la
Fundación Chinati: las 15 piezas de
concreto situadas a campo descubierto
y las 100 piezas de aluminio instaladas
en dos antiguos depósitos de artillería
que Judd había adaptado para que se
acomodaran a su nuevo propósito. Yo
investigué la creación de estos dos grupos
de obras y pude reconstruir los detalles
muy diversos relativos a su concepción
y su forma final (ver pág. 45).
llegar a apreciar debidamente dicha
obra. También creía que las
instalaciones a gran escala eran esenciales
artistas. Flavin y Chamberlain
fueron sus primeros compañeros; posteriormente
se les unieron Claes Oldenburg,
Coosje van Bruggen, Ilya Kabakov,
Roni Horn, Richard Long e Ingolfur
Arnarsson, los cuales enriquecieron la
colección con obras creadas, en su mayor
parte, exclusivamente para Chinati.
Varios proyectos con todavía más artistas,
planeados en vida de Judd, quedaron
sin realizarse al morir el fundador
de Chinati. En 1995 pudimos instalar
una selección de poemas de Carl Andre
en los cuales Judd se había interesado
bastante cuando vio la sensacional exhibición
en otoño de 1993 en la galería
de Paula Cooper; la exhibición se trasladó
posteriormente al Kunstverein
Köln y el Museo Stedelijk de Amsterdam.
Gracias a la generosidad de Carl
Andre, se han agregado a nuestra colección
460 hojas con poesías de An-
tional exhibition in the fall of 1993
at Paula Cooper’s gallery; the exhibition
subsequently traveled to the
Kunstverein Köln and the Stedelijk
Museum in Amsterdam. Thanks to
Carl Andre’s generosity, 460 sheets
of poems have been added to
Chinati’s collection and are now on
permanent view in an installation
designed by the artist. This year we
will realize another of Judd’s wishes
when we open a gallery for the
paintings of John Wesley. Wesley
and Judd first became friends in the
early 1960s; in 1963 Judd wrote his
first review on Wesley, and later developed
a plan for Wesley to have a
permanent presence here. Since
these plans hadn’t gone beyond a
preliminary stage, we decided to
renovate and convert a former stable
building at the far end of our property,
at a suitable distance from Dan
Flavin’s fluorescent colors. This structure
is now becoming the John Wesley
Gallery. The collection comprises
a cross section of his work and,
thanks to a number of gifts from the
artist himself, we will be able to
change the exhibition from time to
time and present even more aspects
of his oeuvre. This year we will celebrate
Wesley with the opening of
this new space, and we’ll pay tribute
to him in next year’s newsletter.
Judd established the parameters of
the Chinati universe, and it is now
up to us to grasp and realize the
possibilities contained within it. We
have organized symposia with
themes revolving around Judd’s own
interests—Art in the Landscape; Art
and Architecture—and one about an
artist much admired by Judd, whose
outstanding installation is a cornerstone
of the collection: Dan Flavin.
As an institution, Chinati is relatively
modest and its exhibition program
can hardly compare to those of leading
museums. But for the same reason,
we can put on exhibitions
which might be out of the question at
other institutions. The focus of our
rolling exhibition program is on
medium-sized groups of works by
one artist at a time. This season we
are showing clay sculptures by Ken
Price, which were all made during
the last ten years. Works on paper
are particularly suitable, all the
more so because they can reveal
more and different aspects of an
artist’s œuvre beyond the work in
the collection. This was certainly
true in the case of the magical notebook
drawings by Claes Oldenburg
and Coosje van Bruggen that we
showed last year, which spanned
AERIAL VIEW OF THE CHINATI FOUNDATION AND MARFA. MARFA, TEXAS.
Wesley y
Judd entablaron amistad a principios
total. Este año celebraremos la apertura
de este nuevo espacio, y rendiremos
homenaje a Wesley en el boletín del
año que viene.
Judd estableció los parámetros del universo
de Chinati, y ahora nos toca a
nosotros realizar las posibilidades que
este universo encierra. Hemos organizado
simposios sobre temas que reflejan
los propios intereses de Judd—Arte
en el paisaje, Arte y arquitectura—y
otro acerca de un artista muy admirado
por Judd, Dan Flavin, cuya impresionante
instalación viene siendo una
de las piedras angulares de nuestra colección.
Como institución, Chinati es relativamente
modesto y su programa de
exhibiciones apenas se compara con
more than 25 years of collaboration
on large-scale projects and revealed
the thinking and work methods of
this inspired team. And there were
other exhibitions before that: Dan
Flavin’s drawings of realized works
and sketches for sited installations;
and Ilya Kabakov’s illustrations for
children’s books from the late 50s to
the late 80s, comprising original
drawings as well as the published
books, which received their first
public presentation here at Chinati.
Although we feel that an important
part of our work is devoted to
widening and deepening public
awareness of “our” artists, we also
organize exhibitions of work by other
artists who may not be represented
in the collection but who were cer-
tainly of interest to Judd. We all still
have vivid memories of Fred Sandback’s
installation—sculptures made
of colored acrylic yarn spanned between
the floor and the ceiling or the
walls, their minimal lines transforming
the U-shaped exhibition space
into zones of remarkably physical
presence. And it was a particular
delight to juxtapose Kabakov’s illustrations
with the (nearly complete)
graphic work of Kazimir Malevich,
which starts out with a surprisingly
bucolic, narrative air that revealed
unsuspected connections to Kabakov.
From time to time we’re also privileged
to enjoy particularly fine
examples of craftsmanship, such as
textiles by Trine Ellitsgaard, presented
last year, or Rupert Deese’s delicate
ceramics, shown some years
before.
Ten years of Chinati after Judd—a
3
a Judd.
