LA ESPAÑA JUDÍA, SEFARAD
Sefarad – el nombre tradicional judío para la Península Ibérica
– y, por extensión, de la cultura sefardí – tiene sus raíces en la
Iberia medieval judía. Actualmente ,en el repertorio sefardí, no
hay canciones que se puedan considerar medievales. Mientras
las letras de muchos romances y cantares de boda tienen sus
orígenes en la literatura de la España medieval o renacentista,
las melodías no son medievales, sino que forman parte de una
tradición oral que se ha desarrollado a través los siglos, los
continentes y las culturas, hasta producir la mezcla única que
constituye el repertorio judeo-español. La poesía judía-ibérica
medieval queda sin voz cantada, porque no nos ha llegado con
sus melodías – los manuscritos nos dan los poemas, pero faltan
las partituras que les corresponden. Durante estos últimos años,
he preparado unos contrafacta (sing. contrafactum), poniendo
melodías posiblemente conocidas por los poetas judíos de la
época con estos textos.

JEWISH SPAIN, SEFARAD
Sefarad – the traditional Jewish name for the Iberian Peninsula, and by
extension, Sephardic culture - to their roots in medieval Jewish Iberia.
Of today’s Sephardic repertoire, there are no songs which can actually be
said to be medieval. Many of the texts do have their roots in medieval
or Renaissance Spain, but their melodies are not medieval: rather,
they are part of an oral tradition which has developed over centuries,
continents and cultures into the unique blend Judeo-Spanish songs are
today. At the same time, the Jewish poetry of medieval Spain remains
mostly unsung, because it has not come down to us with its melodies.
I have experimented with contrafacta: setting some of these poems to
medieval melodies which the poets may have known.
