NOTAS ARISTÓTELES 1 En el mismo modo <strong>de</strong> hablar las diferencias son muchas: Así ha parecido traducir el dicho <strong>de</strong> <strong>Aristóteles</strong>: καὶ πολλὰ πάθη τῆς λέξεώς ἑσι. Por guardias aquí no se pue<strong>de</strong>n enten<strong>de</strong>r hombres o centinelas, porque la peste, según el mismo poeta, comenzó por las bestias. Por eso se puso la voz genérica veladores, que conviene también a los perros que guardan el ganado y las personas y sus cosas. Verdad es que Homero inm<strong>ed</strong>iatamente hace mención <strong>de</strong> los perros, καὶ κῦνας ἅργους. Pero pue<strong>de</strong> significar los perros <strong>de</strong> caza, v. g., galgos y po<strong>de</strong>ncos, y así distinguirlos <strong>de</strong> los primeros, que son dogos y mastines; mayormente ἅργους significa propiamente ociosos, lo que se pue<strong>de</strong> aplicar a perros que sólo sirven para diversión. Por otra p<strong>arte</strong>, Οὐρῆας tiene la misma etimología en griego que mastín en hebreo, <strong>de</strong> don<strong>de</strong> parece que se trasladó al castellano sin alteración ninguna; mas ¿qué importa que la peste empezase por los mulos, dado que resistan a ella más que otros animales, siendo la peste milagrosa? 8 Era, sí, <strong>de</strong> mal talle: <strong>El</strong> que objetaba esto a Homero tenía por gran<strong>de</strong> impropi<strong>ed</strong>ad el que un hombre contrahecho fuese ligero <strong>de</strong> pies. Si los cretenses llamaban <strong>de</strong> buen parecer al <strong>de</strong> buena cara, bien pudo llamar Homero <strong>de</strong> mal parecer o talle al <strong>de</strong> mala cara o mal agestado. 9 Hipias el tasio interpretaba lo <strong>de</strong>l sueño Darle, y no Dámosle: Nuestro filósofo, en el Libro <strong>de</strong> los <strong>El</strong>encos o r<strong>ed</strong>arguciones, <strong>de</strong>clara por extenso lo que aquí apunta, diciendo: Παρὰ δὲ τὴν προσοδίαν εν μὲν τοὶς ἂνευ γραφῆς διαγεκτικοῖς ού ῥαδίον ποιῆσαι ἄλογον, ὲν δὲ τοῖς γεγραννένοις, καὶ ποιῆμασι μάλλον οῖον καὶ τὸν Ομηρον διορθοῦται πρὸς τοὺς ἐλέγχοντας, ὡς ἀτόπως 79
