El texto proviene de una narración de hecha por “J. Mcknitt” (posible descendiente del John Mcknitt Alexander que actuó como secretario en la convención) que declara que es “una copia auténtica de los papeles sobre el asunto que le entregó el difunto John Matthew Alexander” pero que lamentablemente “el libro original se quemó en abril de 1800”. Nota histórica: Estas resoluciones se pueden considerar la primera declaración de independencia de las colonias americanas. Fueron aprobadas, junto con otras resoluciones por las que se adoptaba una nueva forma de gobierno en el condado, por una convención de delegados de los distintos municipios y asentamientos del condado de Mecklenburg 2 que se habían reunido el 19 de mayo de 1775 en la ciudad de Charlotte de Carolina del Norte, a donde les llegaron noticias de la batalla de Lexington, en Massachusetts, que había tenido lugar el mes anterior. Indignados por el ataque del ejército británico, redactaron y aprobaron al día siguiente, “sobre las dos de la tarde”, estas resoluciones, firmándolas Abraham Alexander como presidente la convención y John Mcknitt Alexander como su secretario. 1.
