DoT moves cabinet note on National<br />

Telecom Policy <strong>2012</strong><br />

NEW DELHI: The DoT is learnt to have moved the<br />

draft Cabinet note on National Telecom Policy, <strong>2012</strong>,<br />

which aims at de-linking spectrum from licences<br />

among other proposals.<br />

"Draft cabinet note on NTP has been sent to cabinet<br />

for approval," a senior telecom ministry official said.<br />

The policy, if approved, will replace 13 year-old New<br />

Telecom Policy 1999 through which telecom sector is<br />

governed.<br />

In the note, DoT has also sought approval for decision<br />

on certain issued relating to the introduction of Unified<br />

Licences regime which is vital for telecom companies<br />

whose licences has been cancelled by Supreme<br />

Court on February 2 and new companies planning to<br />

make investment in India.<br />

The government through new telecom policy has made<br />

attempt to set roadmap for functioning and<br />

development of telecom sector starting <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

Under NTP <strong>2012</strong>, it has been proposed to de-link<br />

spectrum from licences, reduce number of different<br />

licences, give industry liberal mergers and acquisition<br />

norms and remove roaming charges burden from<br />

consumers. They will also be allowed to retain same<br />

number across country.<br />
