Yeddyurappa criticises BJP central
leadership; praises Sonia Gandhi
NEW DELHI: The BJP government in Karnataka on
Sunday appeared to be on the edge of a precipice,
with BS Yeddyurappa orchestrating a revolt against
chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda and launching a
verbal offensive against the central leadership. A
worried central leadership will have some serious
fire-fighting to do as confrontation in the BJP-ruled
state shows no signs of ebbing. Gowda has reached
Delhi to deliberate on a way out of the crisis. BJP
leaders, who have been negotiating with the Karnataka
chief minister, were hopeful of keeping the rebellion
under politically permissible limits. Yeddyurappa, who
appears to be convinced that a section in the party,
particularly LK Advani and Ananth Kumar, has been
forcing the leadership to adopt a 'hands off' policy on
troubles facing him, on Sunday heaped handsome
praises on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. "I have to
praise Sonia Gandhi.
I noticed that Congress and its people are united and
supportive if any one of their party members gets into
trouble. They help each other and resolve the
problems," reports from Bangalore quoting
Yeddyurappa said. Yeddyurappa's main grouse is
about the reluctance of BJP to throw a protective
shield around him after the Supreme Court asked CBI
to investigate allegations of graft against the former
chief minister. The grouse was evident when he said
the issue was used to sideline him in the party. "In
Congress, whenever a prominent leader faces
allegations that party rises to protect him and tell
people that law will take its own course. But, in BJP,
people are waiting for a person to get into problems
and sideline him. In BJP, people try to pull the chair
and grab someone else's position," he said. In a 'no
holds barred' attack on Gowda, Yedyurappa said "a
traitor who did not keep his promise is giving sermons.
It is like the devil quoting the scriptures". Gowda had
taken a dig at Yeddyurappa, without naming him at a
function here on Saturday.
"In the past, people came to power to do good for the
people. But these days, people in power do many
wrong things but offer donations and gifts to God
thinking that they will be forgiven," Gowda had said. In
an attempt to pile up pressure on the Karnataka
government, the former chief minister also flaunted the
resignation letters of seven ministers in the Sadananda
Gowda government.
Seven senior ministers - energy minister Shobha
Karandlaje, water resources minister Basavaraj
Bommai, industries minister Murugesh Nirani, PWD
minister CM Udasi, agriculture minister Umesh Katti,
housing minister V Somanna and excise minister MP
Renukacharya - had met Yeddyurappa at his Race
Course Road residence on Saturday and handed over
their resignations and authorised him to decide on the
future course of action.
