CLIPPING INTERNACIONAL (Civil Rights)
More rounds in store for Obama, Joe
Arpaio fight
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he will fight
“to the bitter end” an Obama administration lawsuit and
effort to get monitors in his office. Arpaio is fighting the
U.S Justice Department’s assertions his MCSO bullies,
harasses and unfairly targets Hispanics in traffic stops,
immigration sweeps and at county jails. The
Republican Sheriff says those charges are about the
White House trying to take over his office and stop his
arrests of illegal immigrants. The Christian Science
Monitor looks at whether the latest round for Arpaio will
take a toll on his popularity and reelection
hopes.Arpaio may not be as popular as he once was
but he has $3.4 million in his campaign war chest, is
still popular with Republicans in the Phoenix area and
is expected to win another term this November. The
legal side of the federal civil rights lawsuit could play
out in court as well as behind-the-scenes negotiations
between the MCSO and DOJ.Politically, both
President Barack Obama and Arpaio face possible ups
and downs. For the Sheriff, his promise to fight the
federal lawsuit will appeal to conservatives and others
who back his immigration crackdowns. The key for
Arpaio is maintaining some level of support locally with
moderate Republicans and Independents concerned
about political bickering and the MCSO's mishandling
of sexual abuse cases in El Mirage. For Obama, going
after Arpaio will help him with Hispanic voters in
Arizona and key battleground states like Nevada , New
Mexico and Colorado. It could however, alienate, some
voters who don’t the administration’s immigration
stances.That includes Obama’s opposition to Arizona’s
Senate Bill 1070 immigration law.
