1. All verbs you have learned so far are in the indicative mood. The indicative
mood is used to express actions that actually do, did, or will take place. The
indicative is used to express real events.
Capítulo 1
12 of 48
Juan es un alumno bueno.
Estudia mucho.
Recibe buenas notas.
All the preceding information is factual.
John is a good student, he studies a lot, and he gets good grades.
2. You are now going to learn the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive is used
to express something that is not necessarily factual or real. It expresses
things that might happen. Compare the following.
Capítulo 1
13 of 48
Juan estudia mucho y recibe buenas notas.
Los padres de Juan quieren que él estudie mucho
y que reciba buenas notas.
The first sentence tells you that Juan studies a lot and gets good grades.
The information is factual, and for this reason you use the indicative.
Capítulo 1
14 of 48
Juan estudia mucho y recibe buenas notas.
Los padres de Juan quieren que él estudie mucho
y que reciba buenas notas.
The second sentence states that Juan’s parents want him to study a lot and get
good grades, but that doesn’t mean that Juan will actually do it even though his
parents want him to. The second sentence tells what may happen. It does not
present facts, and for this reason you must use the subjunctive in the clause that
depends upon quieren. Such a clause is called a dependent clause.
3. To form the present tense of the subjunctive of regular verbs, you drop
the o ending of the yo form of the present indicative. This is also true for
verbs that have an irregular form in the present tense of the indicative.
Add e endings to all -ar verbs and a endings to all -er and -ir verbs.
5. The following are the only verbs that do not follow the regular pattern for
the formation of the present subjunctive.
1. The formal commands (usted, ustedes), both affirmative and negative,
use the subjunctive form of the verb.
Capítulo 1
(no) prepare usted (no) preparen ustedes
(no) lea usted (no) lea ustedes
(no) sirva usted (no) sirvan ustedes
(no) salga usted (no) salgan ustedes
(no) conduzca usted (no) conduzcan ustedes
(no) vaya usted (no) vayan ustedes
(no) sea usted (no) sean ustedes
2. You have already learned that object pronouns can be attached to an
infinitive or gerund or come before the helping verb. In the case of
commands, the object pronouns must be added to the affirmative
command, as you already know from the tú commands. They must
come before the negative command.

divertido, ¿no? Se llama «ropa vieja»
porque se puede elaborar con muchas
sobras. Este plato tan conocido se
originó en las islas Canarias.
Capítulo 1
40 of 48
½ kg de carne (de ternera, bife) picada
1 cebolla
1 pimiento verde y un pimiento rojo
3 dientes de ajo
1 cucharadita de orégano
una pizca de pimienta
½ taza de tomate cocido (o enlatado)
3 cucharadas de aceite de oliva
½ taza de caldo (consomé de pollo)
Los pimientos se usan en la cocina
de muchos países hispanos. Hay
muchos tipos de pimientos—unos
picantes y otros dulces—que llevan
muchos nombres diferentes:
pimientos, ajíes, chiles, chipotles, etc.
Capítulo 1
Corte los pimientos, las cebollas y los
ajos en trocitos. Fría los pimientos, las
cebollas y los ajos en el aceite de oliva
con una pizca de pimienta y el orégano.
Añada la carne picada y revuelva todos
los ingredientes (unos dos minutos).
Añada el caldo y cueza (cocine) a fuego
mediano hasta que se evapore el caldo.
Sirva con arroz blanco.
