Abstract: <strong>Frederick</strong> <strong>Starr</strong> (1858-1933) received his Ph.D. in biology (1883-87)He was the Cura<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Ethnology at the<br />

American Museum <strong>of</strong> Natural His<strong>to</strong>ry (1889-91), pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Dean <strong>of</strong> the Science Department at Pomona College (1891),<br />

and associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the University <strong>of</strong> Chicago (1895-1923). The <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> clippings, pamphlets,<br />

lithographs, pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and printed ephemera related <strong>to</strong> Mexican his<strong>to</strong>ry, folk art, folklore, religion, and archeology.<br />

Biography<br />

<strong>Starr</strong> was born in Auburn, New York, September 2, 1858; graduated from Lafayette College in 1882, and received his Ph.D<br />

in 1885; pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> biology, Coe College, 1883-87; Cura<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Ethnology, American Museum <strong>of</strong> Natural His<strong>to</strong>ry, New York,<br />

1889-91; pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Dean <strong>of</strong> the Science Department, Pomona College, 1891; associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, University <strong>of</strong> Chicago,<br />

1895-1923; publications related <strong>to</strong> <strong>Mexico</strong> include: Some first steps in human progress (1895), American Indians (1898),<br />

Indians <strong>of</strong> Southern <strong>Mexico</strong> (1898), Readings from modern Mexican authors (1904), and In Indian <strong>Mexico</strong> (1908); died<br />

August 14, 1933.<br />

Scope and Content<br />

Collection consists <strong>of</strong> clippings, pamphlets, lithographs, pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and printed ephemera related <strong>to</strong> Mexican his<strong>to</strong>ry, folk<br />

art, folklore, religion, and archeology. Includes <strong>material</strong> on Native Americans in <strong>Mexico</strong>, <strong>material</strong>s about the Mexican<br />

Revolution (1910-20), Mexican ballads and song sheets, and portraits <strong>of</strong> prominent Mexicans <strong>of</strong> the nineteenth century.<br />

Also includes Mexican corridos (some illustrated by Posada), 3 albums <strong>of</strong> carte-de-visite pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and pho<strong>to</strong>graphs (ca.<br />

1880s-90s) <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles and vicinity, San Francisco's China<strong>to</strong>wn, and El Paso, Texas.<br />
