La pasión por el mar ha sido una de las constantes de la sociedad
valenciana y su origen se pierde hace siglos, con el
Mediterráneo como un referente que ha moldeado tanto a su
territorio como a su gente. En ese contexto, la Comunitat Valenciana,
en su decidida apuesta por la organización de grandes eventos
deportivos, pero con un destacado componente lúdico y
turístico, tiene ya una reconocida experiencia como anfitriona
de grandes competiciones internacionales náuticas.
Tras el éxito de la 32ª America’s Cup en Valencia, Alicante
toma el relevo para preparar la mejor salida de la Volvo Ocean
Race 2008-2009, que por primera vez en su historia parte
del Mediterráneo. El entorno del recinto portuario alicantino,
que configura una de las fachadas litorales urbanas más
atractivas del continente, con todo tipo de equipamientos y
servicios pensados para el disfrute de visitantes y residentes,
inicia la cuenta atrás de la espectacular salida de la regata
transoceánica. Además, la Generalitat ha diseñado un emblemático
village en el puerto de Alicante en el que hasta la fecha
de salida, en otoño de este año, se van a programar numerosos
eventos y actividades náuticas, culturales y de ocio.
A través de estas páginas, el lector puede conocer los entresijos
de esta competición que tiene bastante de gran aventura
por los mares de los cinco continentes y también de reto
y desafío entre Hombre y Naturaleza. De ahí su trascendencia
mundial y en los medios de comunicación, que contribuye

la Comunitat Valenciana como escenario perfecto para organizar

THE REGION OF VALENCIA PREPARES THE
BEST EXIT OF THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE
A passion for sailing and the sea has imbued Valencian society
for many centuries now, with the waters of the omnipresent
Mediterranean shaping both its lands and its peoples. In this
context, and as part of its concerted bid to organise major sporting
events with a special emphasis on leisure and tourism, the
Region of Valencia already boasts significant experience in hosting
great international sailing competitions.
Hot on the heels of the success of the 32 nd America’s Cup
in Valencia, the city of Alicante is now taking up the baton
in preparation for the greatest ever start to the Volvo Ocean
Race, whose 2008–2009 edition sees the race setting sail from
Mediterranean waters for the first time in its history. The
Alicante harbourside, which forms one of Europe’s most
attractive urban coastlines and is equipped with all kinds of
facilities and services specially designed for the enjoyment
of both visitors and residents alike, is now gearing up for the
countdown to the start of this spectacular round-the-world yacht
race. Moreover, the Generalitat (Valencian Regional Government)
has designed an emblematic village in the port of Alicante,
which will host countless nautical, cultural and entertainment
events and activities in the run-up to the race start date in
October.
Throughout these pages, readers can discover the ins and
outs of this great sporting event, which is packed with
adventure on the high seas as Man takes on Nature in this,
the ultimate sailing challenge. It’s thus no wonder that the
eyes of the world and the international media are now focussing
on the Region of Valencia, which is benefiting from this well
deserved attention to reaffirm its status as the perfect stage
for organising the world’s greatest sporting events.

El Festival del Mediterrani ofrece, del 24
de mayo al 1 de julio, una amplia variedad
de espectáculos en las cuatro salas
del Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía de
Valencia. El certamen tiene asegurada
la calidad gracias a la presencia de batutas
como Zubin Mehta; directores de
escena como Chen Kaige, Francisco
Negrín o La Fura dels Baus; cantantes
como María Guleghina, Leonid Zakhozhaev
o Bejun Mehta, sin olvidar la presencia
valenciana con García Asensio, Silvia
Tro, Marina Rodríguez Cusí y Maite
Alberola. El Festival del Mediterrani se
clausurará el 1 de julio con un espectáculo
de danza del prestigioso ballet de
Roland Petit.
La programación de este festival
abraza una gran variedad de propuestas
destinadas a diferentes públicos. En junio
Siegfried, tercera entrega de la Tetralogía
de Wagner, también con Zubin Mehta
y la Fura dels Baus. La zarzuela La
corte de Faraón contará con la dirección
escénica de Francisco Negrín y la
dirección musical de Enrique García
Asensio. El teatro Martín i Soler acoge
cinco conciertos sinfónicos, y uno el
Auditori. La programación también
incluye dos espectáculos de ballet de
primeras figuras como el bailarín cubano
Carlos Acosta, y la actuación del ballet
de Roland Petit, así como un espectáculo
de Nacho Duato y la Compañía Nacional
de Danza.
El teatro llega de la mano de La Fura
dels Baus con Anell de Llum en la pasarela
de acceso principal del Palau de les
Arts. En esta representación de acceso
gratuito, la Fura dels Baus utiliza elementos
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía
escenográficos de las producciones Das
Rheingold y Die Walküre.
Un ciclo de cine de Chen Kaige, una
exposición de fotografía de Lourdes
Jiménez y conferencias y mesas redondas,
completan la programación del certamen.
During the month of June, the Festival
del Mediterrani – the Festival of the
Mediterranean– will be offering shows and
performances in all four halls of the
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.
The quality of the festival has been
guaranteed by the presence of directors
such as Zubin Mehta, stage managers such
as Chen Kaige, Francisco Negrín and La
Fura dels Baus, and vocalists such as María
Guleghina, Marcello Giordani, Leonid
Zakhozhaev and Bejun Mehta. Great
Valencian talents will also be represented
in the shape of García Asensio, Silvia Tro,
Marina Rodríguez Cusí and Maite Alberola.
Culminating on 1 st July with a spectacular
performance from the prestigious Roland
Petit ballet company.
The programme for the Festival del
Mediterrani features a huge variety of acts
aimed at different audiences. In June there
will be a performance of Siegfried, the
third of the four operas that comprise
Wagner’s The Ring, featuring Zubin
Mehta and La Fura dels Baus.
The “zarzuela” (Spanish operetta)
La corte de Faraón (The Court of the
Pharaoh) will stage managed by Francisco
Negrín with musical direction from
Enrique García Asensio. The Martín i
Soler theatre will host five symphony
concerts, one of which will be held in the
Auditorium. The programme for the
festival will also feature three dance
performances from leading figures such
as Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, Nacho
Duato and Spain’s National Dance
Company, and ballet from the Roland Petit
company.
Theatre will be courtesy of La Fura
dels Baus with Anell de Llum (Ring of
Light) on the main entrance walkway at
the Palau de les Arts. Free of charge, this
performance will see La Fura dels Baus
using props from productions of Das
Rheingold and Die Walküre.

NUEVA TEMPORADA DE AQUARAMA DE BENICÀSSIM
A NEW SEASON AT AQUARAMA IN BENICÀSSIM

Las atracciones acuáticas y las zonas
tematizadas que componen la oferta
de ocio, diversión y esparcimiento del
parque acuático de Benicàssim,
Aquarama, se han preparado para la nueva
temporada, inaugurada en junio. Este
parque acuático cuenta con más de
45.000 metros cuadrados de superficie
destinados exclusivamente a la
diversión de niños y mayores.
Las atracciones acuáticas incluyen
grandes toboganes con descensos trepidantes,
como el Kamizake, el Big
Slide, los Enrollados o el Twister; y el
novedoso Remolino. El parque posee también
zonas de actividades de aventura,
donde descender por una tirolina o una
cascada en la Jungla, zonas de atracciones
infantiles, como la Isla de los
Elefantes y Chiquilandia y espacios
más relajados con piscina de hidromasaje
en el área de los Lagos. El parque
cuenta con una atracción pionera en
España: el Space Shot, que permite disfrutar
de sensaciones similares a las que
provoca una auténtica lanzadera espacial.
Cafeterías, restaurantes, heladerías,
tumbonas, tiendas de regalos o zona de
picnic completan la oferta del parque.
Aquarama ofrece cada año novedades
que invitan a disfrutar al máximo
a las miles de personas, tanto niños como

The aquatic attractions and themed
areas of the Aquarama water park in
Benicàssim are set to reopen for the season
in June, offering visitors fun, relaxation
and entertainment. Covering over 45,000
square metres, the park is devoted to
ensuring a good time for both children
and adults alike.
Its aquatic attractions include huge
toboggans with hair-raising descents, such
as the Kamizake, the Big Slide, the
Twister or the latest addition, the
Whirlpool (El Remolino). The park also
boasts an adventure activity zone, with
a death slide and a jungle waterfall, an
area featuring children’s attractions
such as Elephant Island (La Isla de los
Elefantes) and Kiddieland (Chiquilandia),
and more relaxed and slow-paced spaces
with a hydromassage pool in the area
of The Lakes (Los Lagos). The park also
features an attraction that is the first of
its kind in the whole of Spain: the
Space Shot, in which visitors can
experience what it feels like to be
launched into space. Cafeterias,
restaurants, ice cream parlours, sun
loungers, gift shops and a picnic area
complete the range of facilities on offer
at Aquarama.
Every year, Aquarama features new
attractions to give its thousands of
visitors the best possible time, appealing
to both children and adults. In 2007,
over 150,000 visitors passed through
the gates at Aquarama, making it the
most popular park in the northern sector
of the Mediterranean coast, mostly
attracting visitors from Castellón, Valencia,
Teruel and Zaragoza.

La vigésima edición del Festival de Cine
de L’Alfàs del Pi se celebrará del 4 al 13
de julio y contará con una programa
repartido en varias secciones, pero también
con otras actividades artísticas
relacionadas con el mundo del celuloide.
Exposiciones, imágenes, música,
foros y debates formarán parte de la
programación. Como años anteriores,
la organización prevé celebrar los tradicionales
almuerzos cinematográficos,
unos encuentros en los que el mundo del
cine y el culinario son los protagonistas
y que se celebran en diferentes restaurantes
del municipio.
Este año el festival ofrecerá un total
de 75 proyecciones repartidas en las secciones
de Cine Actual, la sección
Homenaje, Cine Español, Cine junto al
mar, Cine Documental y Cine en versión
original, además de su concurso de cortometrajes.
Como en las diecinueve ediciones anteriores,
relevantes actrices, actores y
directores de la cinematografía internacional
recibirán el Faro de Plata, máximo
galardón del festival alfacino que se
otorga a profesionales del mundo del cine
por sus méritos o trayectoria. Pedro
Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar, Victoria
Abril, Eduardo Noriega, Sergi López,
Luis García Berlanga, José Sacristán, Ana
Belén, Carmen Maura, Marisa Paredes,
Miguel Bosé, Charo López, Imanol Arias,
Paco Rabal y José Luis López Vázquez
son, entre otros, algunos de los galardonados
por el Festival de Cine de L’Alfàs
del Pi.
The 20 th L’Alfàs del Pi Film Festival is
due to be held from 4 th to 13 th July and
will feature a programme divided into
several sections plus other artistic
activities relating to the world of the
silver screen. Exhibition, images, music,
forums and debates will all be held as
part of the festival and, as in previous
years, traditional cinematographic lunches
will be given at various restaurants
around the town, making for encounters
in which cinema and cuisine share the
spotlight.
This year’s festival will offer a total
of 75 screenings covering sections
entitled Current Cinema, Tribute, Spanish
Cinema, Seaside Cinema, Documentary
Film-making and Original Language
Films, as well as a short film competition.
Just like in the festival’s previous
19 outings, relevant actors, actresses and
directors from the international movie scene
will be awarded the Faro de Plata award,
the festival’s greatest accolade, which is
awarded to professionals from the film
world in recognition of their achievements
or their life’s work. Pedro Almodóvar,

CULTURA RESTAURA LA PARROQUIA DE SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA PARISH CHURCH

Camps visitó en Monòver la iglesia de San
Juan Bautista en la que la Conselleria de
Cultura ha llevado a cabo diversas actuaciones
de restauración. San Juan Bautista
es un templo barroco con influencias
neoclásicas que empezó a construirse en
abril de 1751.
La nave principal está cubierta por una
bóveda de cañón seguido con cúpula
semiesférica con lunetos donde se ubican
las ventanas, mientras que las dos
naves laterales, formadas por la perforación
de los contrafuertes, alojan las capillas
donde se veneran diversas imágenes. El
crucero, con cúpula sobre pechinas, se
forma por la discontinuidad de las capillas
laterales. Por el lado del Evangelio,
se accede a la Capilla de la Virgen del
Remedio. De grandes dimensiones, tiene
entrada propia, por el jardinet y presenta
en su exterior dos columnas sosteniendo
una cornisa y, sobre ellas, otras dos que
sirven de adorno a un nicho ocupado
por la imagen de la Virgen del Remedio,
esculpida en 1765.
En su interior, un interesante retablo
de madera dorada y policromada, obra
realizada en 1774 por el escultor Francisco
Mira, aloja el camarín con la imagen de
la patrona de Monòver.
En el crucero, en el lado de la Epístola,
se halla adosado un órgano barroco, originalmente
construido en 1771 por el conquense
Julián de la Orden y reconstruido
en siglo XIX por Alberto Randeynes. El
órgano fue restaurado en su totalidad durante
el 2007.
The President of the Valencian Regional
Government, Francisco Camps, has visited
the church of San Juan Bautista in
Monòver, in which various restoration
works have been carried out by the
Department for Culture. San Juan Bautista
is a Baroque temple with Neo-Classical
influences, and construction work to
build the church was first started in
April 1751.
The main nave is covered by a cannon
vault and a hemispherical cupola with
lunettes in the windows, while the two
side naves created by perforating the
buttresses house chapels in which various
images are worshipped. The transept,
with its scalloped dome, is formed by a
break in the side chapels.
On the Gospel side stands the spacious
Capilla de la Virgen del Remedio chapel,
which has its own access via the small
garden or jardinet and whose exterior
features two columns supporting a cornice,
on top of which stand another two columns
framing a niche occupied by the image
of the Virgen del Remedio (The Virgin
Healer), sculpted in 1765.
Inside, an interesting gilt and
polychrome wooden altarpiece created by
the sculptor Francisco Mira in 1774
houses a shrine with the image of the Virgen
del Remedio, patron saint of Monòver.
In the transept, on the Epistle side,
stands a Baroque organ originally
constructed in 1771 by Julián de la
Orden from Cuenca and reconstructed in
the 19 th century by Alberto Randeynes.
It was fully restored over the course of
2007.

La prestigiosa regata Volvo Ocean
Race, en su edición 2008-2009
partirá desde el puerto de Alicante
el 11 de octubre del 2008. Desde
su página web se pueden conocer
todos los detalles de esta regata
alrededor del mundo por escalas en
la que solo los mejores navegantes
se atreven a vivir en condiciones
extremas y en la que los equipos participantes
recorrerán 39 mil millas
en nueve meses y vivirán en un
espacio que, por persona, no supera
los dos metros cuadrados.
A través de la página se dan a
conocer las novedades de esta décima
edición de la regata que sale por
primera vez desde el Mediterráneo.
La ciudad de Alicante será la anfitriona
de la etapa más destacada junto
con la llegada a San Petersburgo, así
como China, Arabia Saudí, Irlanda
y Rusia que se incluyen por primera
vez en una ruta que hará escala
en once países. La web dispone de
secciones de comunicación con noticias,
datos sobre el puerto de salida,
meteorología en Alicante, la
competición náutica e información
para el visitante.
Para la salida se ha preparado un
ambicioso programa de eventos y se
ha instalado el Village Alicante
2008-2009, un recinto abierto al
público de 40 mil metros cuadrados
en el puerto que abrirá sus puertas
el 19 de septiembre y, que hasta el
11 de octubre, ofrecerá a los ciudadanos
y visitantes un programa
intenso y atractivo de actividades para
todas las edades y públicos.
Con la organización de esta salida,
Alicante y la Comunitat Valenciana
continúan tras la disputa de la 32ª
America’s Cup en Valencia en el
centro mundial de la vela, de los
medios de comunicación nacional e
internacional y de los mejores navegantes
del mundo.

a través de una nueva webcam,
imágenes en directo del Oceanogràfic de
la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de
Valencia. A través de este nuevo servicio,
los internautas pueden contemplar
los detalles vanguardistas de los edificios
diseñados por Santiago Calatrava y
Félix Candela, las diferentes áreas que
componen este parque de ocio e investigación
e incluso los espectáculos programados
en el gran delfinario desde
cualquier punto del globo con conexión
a internet.
La posición de la cámara permite
contemplar el Oceanogràfic desde
múltiples perspectivas aportando una
amplia visión de las instalaciones con
especial atención al delfinario. Esta
iniciativa, desarrollada en colaboración
con la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias,
también incluye imágenes esféricas de
360º de todo el parque, así como
información práctica como guías en
PDF, ofertas, datos descriptivos del
parque y links de interés.
Otra de las opciones es la recopilación
de imágenes para su posterior visionado,
ya que un centenar de instantáneas
captadas el día anterior posibilita al

En España existen más de 1.600 kilómetros
de infraestructuras ferroviarias
en desuso que han sido recuperadas
y reconvertidas en itinerarios cicloturistas
y de senderismo para el uso y disfrute
de los amantes de la naturaleza. El
portal turístico de las vías verdes de
España gestionado por la Fundación
de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, ofrece
al visitante, ordenadas por comunidades
autónomas, las fichas técnicas
de decenas de rutas georeferenciadas.
Esta web, además, pone a disposición
del turista la posibilidad de
conocer, desde su propia casa, el
patrimonio cultural, las infraestructuras
y conexiones e incluso la cartografía
que existe sobre el terreno por el que
discurre el itinerario. Además, en la
sección de guías de viaje, se ofrecen
detalladas descripciones de las vías
verdes, e imágenes, actividades y
enlaces. Otra de las secciones de este
portal muestra un mapa en el que se
diferencia entre las vías verdes transitables
sin acondicionar y aquellas que
están habilitadas para su uso. Muchas
de las rutas recogidas en esta página
cuentan con un acceso ferroviario que

En la Comunitat Valenciana existen
ocho vías verdes: Alcoy, Maigmó,
Ojos Negros, Safor, Serpis, Torrevieja,
Xixarra y Xurra. Entre ellas destaca por
su longitud, la vía verde de los Ojos
Negros I que comienza en la huerta
valenciana y culmina en los altos de
Barracas, con un total de 70 kilómetros

in their original, untransformed state,

In the Region of Valencia there
are eight vías verdes, at Alcoy, Maigmó,

hotographs, videos, images and a project by Santiago Cirugeda all form part
of the new exhibition at the Contemporary Art Space in Castellón (Espai d’Art
Contemporani de Castellón, or EACC). Made up of a series of recent projects
from diverse cultural backgrounds, Reactívate!! Espacios remodelados e intervenciones
mínimas is an exhibition that looks at how, with a minimum of design- and
architectural-strategy-related means and resources, it is possible to transform the
most unlikely buildings and urban landscapes and recondition them for completely
new uses.

Los proyectos reunidos en esta exposición
llevan implícita una crítica del
urbanismo y de las convenciones arquitectónicas,
en su intento por renegociar
y adaptar espacios urbanos. De este
modo, la muestra desvela que para
llevar a cabo diseños imaginativos dentro
de espacios problemáticos o infrautilizados
de una ciudad y su periferia
no se precisan materiales de última generación.
En muchas ocasiones, los elementos
más precarios o una situación
condicionada por las dificultades presupuestarias
o la indefinición es fuente
de inspiración para los diseños más
innovadores y dinámicos.
La exposición se interroga acerca de
la capacidad de la nueva arquitectura
para inventar formas más sutiles de
interacción con un contexto dado y
preexistente y cual es el motivo de la
constante urbanización y aburguesamiento
urbano, que limpia sólo los territorios
de la ciudad para adaptarlos a una
estética de aceptación social.
La pregunta que, al final, plantea
la muestra de EACC es si tecnología lo
tech (producción de alta elaboración y
precisión conceptual realizada con
recursos de baja tecnología) y el diseño
laissez-faire (completa libertad en
el diseño arquitectónico y urbanístico)
pueden ofrecer alternativas relevantes
al poder de la renovación urbana.
In their attempt to renegotiate and
adapt urban spaces, the projects collected
in this exhibition convey an
implicit critique of town planning and
architectural conventions. In this way,
the exhibition reveals how creating
imaginative designs within the problematic
or underemployed spaces of a city and
its surroundings doesn’t necessarily
require cutting-edge materials. On
many occasions, the most humble elements
or a situation marked by budgetary
difficulties or a lack of definition
can become a source of inspiration for
the most innovative and dynamic
designs.
The exhibition explores the capacity
of the latest architecture to invent
more subtle forms of interaction with
a given pre-existing context, and asks
what is behind the constant development
and urban gentrification that sees city
spaces cleaned up only to be moulded
to a socially acceptable aesthetic. The
question ultimately asked by the EACC
exhibition is whether “lo-tech” technology
– highly conceptual, elaborate and
accurate creations made using resources
of low technology, in other words with
few economic and material resources
– and laissez-faire design with its
complete freedom of architectural and
planning design, could offer relevant
alternatives in the field of urban renewal.

Apenas quedan unos meses para que el mundo entero mire hacia Alicante. Siete barcos de competición de última
generación disputarán la décima edición de la Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), antes Whitbread Round the World Race, una
regata con escalas que da la vuelta al mundo y que se celebra desde 1973. La primera prueba de esta regata oceánica
se celebrará en aguas alicantinas el 4 de octubre y pocos días después, el 11, los barcos zarparán rumbo a Sudáfrica,
hasta Ciudad del Cabo, primera etapa de la regata. El resto del recorrido, de unas 37.000 millas náuticas, el más
largo de la historia de la regata, recorrerá los cinco océanos y concluirá en el mes de junio de 2009. De los siete barcos
inscritos hasta el momento, hay dos españoles, ambos dirigidos por Pedro Campos. Muchas son las cosas que
han cambiado en esta regata desde 1973 pero, sin duda, todavía mantiene el espíritu aventurero e indómito de sus
tripulaciones.
In just a few months’ time, the eyes of the whole world will be on Alicante, as seven state-of-the-art racing yachts
battle it out in the 10 th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR). The first trial in the race, which was previously known
as the Whitbread Round the World Race and has been held since 1973, will be an in-port race in Alicante waters on
4 th October. Then, just a few days later on 11 th , the yachts will set sail for Cape Town in South Africa, the first port
of call in the race. This, the 10 th edition, will be the longest race yet, covering some 37,000 nautical miles, and is
scheduled to finish in June 2009. Of the seven boats enrolled so far, there are two Spanish entries, both managed
by Pedro Campos. Many things might have changed in this race since 1973, but the crews’ indomitable spirit of adventure
certainly remains as strong as ever.

La regata nació gracias a una iniciativa británica, apoyada
por la casa cervecera Whitbread, y con el beneplácito
de la British Royal Naval Sailing Association.
Desde sus inicios en 1973 y hasta la edición de 2005,
la salida siempre fue desde el Reino Unido. La primera
edición, la de 1973, zarpó de Portsmouth,
donde regresó 152 días después, y las siguientes todas
desde Southampton hasta que tocó aguas gallegas.
Esta es la primera edición de la Volvo Ocean Race
que sale desde un puerto del Mediterráneo y la
segunda cuyo punto de partida es España ya que Alicante
ha recogido el testigo de Vigo, escenario de la salida
de la novena edición celebrada en 2005.
Fue en la edición de 1981 cuando se registra la
primera participación española con el barco Licor 43,
que consiguió la proeza de acabar la regata. Desde
entonces, España ha estado presente en todas las ediciones
hasta la de 1993, cuando participó con el WOR
60 Galicia-Pescanova, patroneado por Javier de la
Gándara.
Siete equipos, de cinco países, tomarán la salida
de la décima edición de la Volvo Ocean Race: los
suecos Ericsson Racing 1 y 2; el Puma Ocean Racing
de Estados Unidos; el Team Russia; el Green Team
de Irlanda, que ha sido el último que ha confirmado
su participación y cuyo skipper es el olimpista británico,
Ian Walter; y España, con dos barcos -Alicante
1 y Alicante 2- dos VO70 diseñados por Bruce Farr.

ONCE ETAPAS

Estos lucharán en diez etapas, siete regatas transoceánicas
y siete metas volantes. La regata In Port se
disputará en Alicante el 4 de octubre de este año,
previa a la salida oficial y le seguirán seis más:
Singapur, Qingdao, Río de Janeiro, Boston, Galway
y Estocolmo. Las pruebas costeras tendrán una duración
aproximada de dos horas y, al día siguiente, se
celebrarán siete regatas Pro-Am, en los mismos
puertos que las costeras.
Los barcos recorrerán todo el globo y circunnavegarán
océanos y mares en las diez etapas programadas.
El itinerario ha cambiado respecto a la de la
pasada edición, ya que en esta ocasión la regata llegará
por primera vez a Asia, concretamente a China,
al puerto de Qingdao. Las instalaciones de Qingdao
y el apoyo incondicional de la ciudad han sido factores
decisivos en la elección.
La etapa más larga cubrirá el recorrido entre
China y Brasil, en la que se realizará el paso por el
Cabo de Hornos, con una distancia de 12.300 millas.
Desde Brasil, los barcos emprenderán rumbo a la costa
este de Estados Unidos, para luego volver a poner
rumbo a Europa. Tras pasar por Irlanda y Suecia, la
competición concluirá en un puerto ruso, el de San
Petersburgo. La aventura durará nueve meses y las
tripulaciones afrontarán vientos peligrosos y
emocionantes, largas encalmadas, olas como montañas,
frío polar o tanto calor que es casi imposible respirar.

LA TRIPULACIÓN

Los equipos deben de estar formados por once miembros,
excepto los que tengan cinco o más mujeres,
que podrán tener hasta doce o en los que todo sean
mujeres, que podrán contar con un máximo de catorce
tripulantes.
La experiencia para la tripulación, hombres y
mujeres, es extrema. Muchas veces dormir es imposible
y cualquier tarea, incluso vestirse o ir al baño,
requieren un esfuerzo mayúsculo. La tripulación se
enfrasca en una batalla para evitar que se moje la electrónica.
El barco entero se estremece a cada paso de
ola. Muchas veces las sacudidas son brutales. Todos
los winches y elementos del piano suenan como si
fueran cañonazos, bajo la enorme tensión que soportan.
El agua entra a borbotones en la bañera y hacia
la cabina, de modo que hay que sacarla cada poco
para evitar tener una piscina en la banda de sotavento.
En ocasiones, estar en cubierta es como estar delante
de una manguera con el chorro a tope y los tripulantes
deben agarrarse como lapas para mantenerse
dentro de la bañera. Sin embargo, para esos hombres
y mujeres ese es el mejor lugar del mundo, se sienten
felices rasgando el Atlántico Sur a velocidades
que exceden los 30 nudos. Es una sensación difícil
de describir, una mezcla de adrenalina, entusiasmo
y excitación.
Los barcos participantes en la Volvo Ocean Race
son auténticos prototipos de lo que serán los veleros
en el futuro. Por sí solos constituyen un banco de pruebas
real sobre las nuevas técnicas empleadas en
construcción naval. Con algo más de veinte metros
de eslora estos veleros son los verdaderos bólidos del
mar, capaces de ir incluso más rápido que el mismo
viento. Aunque parezca imposible, estos barcos alcanzan
velocidades de unos 25 nudos con un viento del
través de 20. Y con una fuerza mayor pueden llegar
cerca de los 40 nudos de velocidad.

REGLAMENTACIÓN

En las regatas In port race habrá dos árbitros que navegarán
a escasa distancia de las embarcaciones para
controlar las infracciones y, llegado el caso, penalizar
a la embarcación, que como castigo deberá dar
un giro completo sobre si mismo que incluya una maniobra
de virada y otra de trasluchada.
En las mangas oceánicas, las penalizaciones
serán de dos tipos. La primera es que durante las tres
primeras horas de la regata la penalización será de
dos giros en lugar de uno y la segunda será por descuento
de puntos, según decisión tomada por el
jurado. Si existiese desacuerdo, los barcos involucrados
podrán recurrir y exponer sus argumentos en un tribunal,
quien decidirá si la embarcación se penaliza
con descuento de puntos o con descalificación de esa
manga o de parte de la carrera.
Se limita el uso de internet a bordo para evitar
que las embarcaciones obtengan asistencia externa
durante la competición. De esa manera se
impide que nadie proporcione datos a los barcos
que puedan suponer una ventaja con respecto a
sus competidores.
La Volvo Ocean Race es una competición en la que
pugnan los mejores. Es una prueba de dureza y firmeza
por las terribles condiciones en que se navegan
etapas de hasta 12.000 millas, muchas veces
con vientos calmados y otras veces con gigantescas
olas. Hoy, más de 33 años después de la primera regata,
muchas cosas han cambiado en esta competición,
sin embargo mantiene el espíritu de reto y aventura
con la que nació y sigue siendo una de las pruebas
más duras, emocionantes y enriquecedoras que ofrece
el mundo del deporte náutico.

The yacht race was created thanks to a British initiative
supported by the Whitbread hospitality company
and with the blessing of the British Royal Naval
Sailing Association.
From the outset in 1973 until 2005, the race always
used to set sail from the United Kingdom. The first

edition, the 1973 race, set out from Portsmouth,
returning 152 days later, while the subsequent races
all started in Southampton until the race was brought
to the shores of Galicia, Spain, for the 9 th edition in
2005. This year will see Alicante become the second
Spanish city to host the start, after Vigo in 2005, and
will see the race setting sail from a Mediterranean port
for the first time ever.
The first time a Spanish team entered the race was
in 1981 with the yacht Licor 43, which achieved the
honourable distinction of managing to complete the course.
Spain was subsequently represented in all of the races
until its last outing in 1993, with the WOR 60 yacht
the Galicia-Pescanova, skippered by Javier de la
Gándara.

ELEVEN STAGES

The crews will battle it out over ten legs, seven
transoceanic races and seven waypoints. The first inport
race will be held in Alicante on 4 th October of this
year, before the VOR gets officially underway, and will
be followed by six more: in Singapore, Qingdao, Rio
de Janeiro, Boston, Galway and Stockholm. These
coastal trials will last for approximately two hours and
then, on the following day, these same ports will be home
to seven Pro-Am races.
During the 10 scheduled legs of the VOR, the
yachts will circumnavigate the globe, crossing seas and
oceans as part of an itinerary that has been changed
since the last edition and will now take in Asia for the
first ever time: more specifically, the port of Qingdao
in China. The facilities at Qingdao and the unconditional
support of the city were decisive factors in its
selection.
The longest leg will run from China to Brazil by way
of Cape Horn: a distance of 12,300 miles. From Brazil,
the boats will set sail for the East Coast of the US before
heading back to Europe. Following stopovers in Ireland
and Sweden, the competition will then conclude in the
Russian port of St Petersburg. Overall, the adventure
will last for nine months and will see the crews facing
all manner of conditions from dangerous winds and long
stretches of calm, waves like mountains, polar cold and
stifling heat.

THE CREW

Teams must be made up of 11 members, except for
those including five or more women, which may have
up to 12 members, and for exclusively female teams,
which may have up to a maximum of 14 members.
For the crew, both men and women alike, the
experience is extreme. Much of the time, sleeping is
impossible and any task – even just getting dressed or
going to the bathroom – requires a major effort.
The crew are also in a constant battle
against the electronic equipment getting wet, and the
whole boat shudders with each wave that passes. All
too often, these onslaughts are brutal, and all the
winches and equipment reverberate like cannon shots
under the massive strain. Water gushes on board and
constantly threatens the cabin, so it must be bailed out
regularly to avoid the formation of a swimming pool on

the leeward side. At times, being on deck is like being
in front of a hosepipe turned on at full blast, and the
crew must hold on like limpets to remain on board.
But nevertheless, for these brave men and women
this is the best place on earth, and they simply love
ploughing the South Atlantic at speeds of over 30
knots. It’s hard to describe the feeling, a mixture of
adrenaline, enthusiasm and excitemen.
The boats taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race
are veritable prototypes for the yachts of the future.
In themselves, they are a true test bench for the latest
naval construction techniques. At a little over 20
metres long, these yachts are the sports cars of the
ocean, and can even go faster than the wind itself.
Although it might seem impossible, in a crosswind
of 20 knots, they can reach speeds of 25 knots. And
with a concerted effort, they can travel at speeds of
up to 40 knots.

REGULATIONS

For the in-port races, there will be two judges sailing
just a short distance from the boats to check for
any infringement of the rules and to penalise the boats
where applicable. As a penalty, boats must perform
a 360-degree turn, involving both a tack and a gybe
manoeuvre.
On the oceanic legs, there will be two types of
penalty. The first applies for up to three hours after
the start, and involves the crew having to make two
turns instead of one. After this time, the penalty involves
a deduction of points, as decided by the jury. In the
event of a disagreement, the boats involved may appeal
and put their arguments forward before a tribunal,
which will decide whether the boat is to be penalised
by losing points or by being disqualified from that
leg or part of the race.
The use of onboard internet is restricted to prevent
the boats from receiving outside assistance
during the competition. In this way, nobody is able
to provide the boats with any data that might give
them an advantage over their competitors.
The Volvo Ocean Race is a competition for the
crème de la crème of the sailing world, a test of strength
and stamina under extreme conditions over stages
that can be up to 12,000 miles long, sometimes in
calm waters, sometimes with tempests and gigantic
waves. Nowadays, over 33 years since the very
first race, many things might have changed, but the
original spirit of challenge and adventure remains
as strong as ever and it continues to be one of the
most difficult, thrilling and enriching events in the
world of sailing.

Parque escultórico
A sculpture park
Sabinas y piedras milenarias esconden celosas, en el Rincón
de Ademuz, medio centenar de obras de arte, colocadas allí,
merced a dos bienales celebradas en los albores del siglo XXI.
Una puesta en escena de artistas que se han servido de sus
piedras, hierros y maderas y se han alimentado de sus rincones,
formas y curvas para engendrar unas esculturas que
resaltan, ante todo, la armonía entre lo artificial y lo original
y que descansan plácidamente en senderos y aldeas. La
relación de las obras con su entorno no ha sido fortuita ya
que cada ubicación ha sido elegida cuidadosamente por el
propio autor. De esta manera, algunas veces las obras hacen
un guiño al viajero al aparecer de pronto y otras, sin embargo,
juegan con él al escondite. Como si del legado de Apolo,
dios de las artes se tratara, el parque escultórico del Rincón
de Ademuz permite disfrutar de medio centenar de obras, incompatibles
con su confinamiento en museos y salas de arte tradicionales,
y también permite gozar de la generosa naturaleza
de la única comarca valenciana separada del resto como
una isla tierra adentro.
The junipers and ancient rocks of El Rincón de Ademuz are
the timeless curators of some 50 works of art, placed there
to mark two biennial exhibitions celebrated in the early 21 st
century. The works have been arranged by artists who have
made use of the area’s stones, iron and wood, and who have
found inspiration in its hidden nooks, its forms and curves,
to create sculptures that highlight, above all, the harmony between
the artificial and the original, and these creations now stand
quietly along the district’s pathways and in its villages. The
relationship between the works and their surroundings is not
one born of mere chance, since each location has been
meticulously chosen by the work’s very creator. Thus, the works
can seem to wink at passers by appearing suddenly out of the
blue, while at other times they are more coy, playing a bashful
game of hide and seek. Like the legacy of Apollo, the god of
the arts himself, the sculpture park in El Rincón de Ademuz
invites visitors to enjoy scores of works free from the confines
of museums and traditional art galleries and to bask in the
generosity of Mother Nature in the one Valencian district that
lies separate from the others, like an island inland.

Hay espacios de arte en plena naturaleza
y el Rincón de Ademuz es uno de ellos,
gracias a la Asociación Desarrollo Integral
Rincón de Ademuz (ADIRA), organizadora
de las dos bienales de arte. Medio
centenar de obras de escultores
procedentes de México, El Salvador,
Portugal, Brasil, Reino Unido, Perú,
Argentina, Bolivia, Estados Unidos,
Venezuela, Francia, Taiwán, Japón,
Guatemala, Italia y España están
diseminadas por los caminos, pueblos y
aldeas que conforman el parque escultórico
del Rincón de Ademuz. El senderismo o
la bici de montaña son la excusa perfecta
para recorrer una comarca que ha hecho
del arte su naturaleza.
Muchas de las obras han sido realizadas
sólo con lo que ofrece la tierra.
Piedra, madera o hierro se convierten,
gracias a las expertas manos de artistas,
en piedra tallada, madera trabajada
o hierro forjado y devuelven a la
naturaleza del Rincón el humanismo y
la reflexión necesaria para comprender
el mundo. Un arte colocado cuidadosamente
en paredes de piedra de antiguas
casas, en veredas verdes, bosques
o calles empinadas, que al final se
mimetizan tanto con el entorno que
parece que siempre han estado allí.
Ese es el caso de la extraordinaria
escultura Horse del inglés Philip Bews,
que consiguió la Manzana de Oro de la
primera bienal, de las espectaculares caras
de Diane Gorvin de nombre Echoing
Walls, incrustadas en el muro de una vieja
casa de Arroyo Cerezo, Trujalia, la vaca
loca de Saculesoj Zeuqzàv Noirrac, en
una de las veredas del Turia o la inquietante
Ventana de Ana Medina una escultura
de hierro y cobre colocada sobre una
muro de piedra.
Visita obligada es la espectacular
escultura de El caminante, obra del
director de las bienales, Lucas Karrvaz,
primera obra del parque escultórico,
Manos de José Luis Menéndez, una
mezcla entre las manos trabajadas y
rudas de un labrador comparadas con
las de Creador cuando trabajó la tierra,
o las Transparencias Rurales del salvadoreño
Mauricio Álvarez Geoffroy, una
escultura que permite ver a través de sus
huecos el suelo, las montañas y el cielo.
Miguel Ángel Díaz Soriano es el
autor de Radiografías y de Nuestras
Hogueras elaboradas en su taller de
forja de Torrebaja y que representan la
fisonomía y un hecho de la aislada
comarca. Silio Roig Giner es la autora
de las espectaculares obras Babel y el
Círculo del sol. El labrador, representa
un hombre que muestra las huellas del
cansancio del que trabaja la tierra todo
el día, es un magnífico trabajo del argentino
Marcelo Gustavo Visentini. Manuel
Herrero es el autor de tres esculturas de
forja, sugerentes y sin embargo precisas:
Ave, Veleta y Perro al Sol. Otro
escultor de Torrebaja, Antonio Lucio
Morales, creó Levantemos el Rincón,
una representación de la comarca alzada
por siete manos que son cada uno de
los siete pueblos del Rincón.
Sin Límites de Jesús Olivares,
Silvestrado de Carlos Cox Mendoza,
Angazo d’Amore de Remigio Dávila o la
obra sin título que representa a una
mujer atrapada de Encarna Sarió son,
entre otras muchas, las esculturas que
salen al paso en el parque escultórico
del Rincón de Ademuz, una muestra
artística que se puede visitar los 365 días
del año a través de varios itinerarios.
El primero recorre Val de la Sabina,
Mas del Olmo, Sesga y Puebla de San
Miguel. El segundo va desde Ademuz a
los Santos, Arroyo Cerezo, Castielfabib
y Cuesta del Rato. El número tres recorre
las esculturas de Torrebaja, Mas de
los Mudos, Torrealta y Mas de Jacinto.
El último recorrido va por Casas Altas,
Casas Bajas, Vallanca y Negrón. Además
cuatro rutas por ríos y valles muestran
como la naturaleza y la escultura son en
el Rincón de Ademuz algo inseparable.

RUTA DEL TURIA

Un recorrido meridional por la gran arteria
fluvial del Rincón de Ademuz, desde
Mas de Jacinto hasta Casas Bajas, permitirá
adentrarse en el paisaje más
humanizado del Rincón. No en vano, es
aquí, a lo largo de este pasillo verde, donde
se concentra la mayor parte de sus escasos
tres mil habitantes y también donde
se concentran las principales actividades
socioeconómicas de la comarca.
Un viaje por el universo cultivado de la
vega fecunda del Turia, que tiene en la
manzana autóctona esperiega y en otras
variedades frutícolas sus máximos exponentes
agrícolas.
A mitad de ruta, sorprende la visión
del abigarrado caserío de Ademuz que
desde la N-330 o desde cualquiera de
sus cerros dominantes como Castro,

Muela u Horca se contempla. Un entramado
urbano de origen medieval, sin apenas
alteraciones, de forma apretada y
escalonada se desparrama por toda la
ladera desde el castillo de Santa Bárbara
hasta la vega del Turia.

RUTA DEL EBRÓN

Esta ruta es una paseo agradable por el
curso bajo del río Ebrón, Torrebaja, Los
Santos, Castielfabib y Cuenta del Rato.
El río Ebrón es un río de aguas abundantes
y trucheras, que alimenta con sus
caudales los aforos de un joven Turia y
que desciende cristalino desde las sierras
turolenses de Albarracín hasta Torrebaja.
Un valle que se presenta amable y
abandonado en su desembocadura y
voraz e intrépido en las entalladuras y
roquedos de Castielfabib, como así se
adivina desde el Mirador de Ebrón o
desde el alto enriscado del Castillo.
El caminante tiene la oportunidad,
en esta ruta, de visitar las ruinas del
Convento de Guillermo, erigido al otro
lado del río, y con ello descubrir algunas
de las estampas más espectaculares
que nos ofrece el Ebrón.

RUTA DE LA RAMBLA DEL VAL

Es una excursión tortuosa por uno de los
espacios más agrestes del Rincón,
enmarcado en las estribaciones más
occidentales de la Sierra de Javalambre,
donde se localiza el pico más alto de la
Comunitat Valenciana, el Alto de Barracas
de 1.386 metros. Una topografía ruda
y forestal por un río que carece de un
curso de agua constante, que desciende
jerarquizado hasta el Turia, drenando
los valles laterales del Mas del Olmo,
Puebla de San Miguel y Sesga.
El recorrido por esta ruta lleva a pintorescos
merenderos como el del Mal Paso,
Don Guillén y el del Molino de los
Cuchillos, también llega hasta árboles
monumentales como Las Blancas y Pino
Vicente o miradores como el de Mirar el
Bueno. La ruta, tortuosa y difícil, descubre
aldeas y villas que sobreviven a
pesar de su difícil orografía.

RUTA DEL BOHILGUES

El Bohilgues es un pequeño afluente
doméstico del Turia que localiza sus
manantiales en las faldas de la Sierra
de Santerón y que, próximo a su
desembocadura en Ademuz, labra una
escarpada y pintoresca hoz de gran valor
ecológico por su comunidad animal y
vegetal, donde destacan ciertos
endemismos.

A lo largo de este sosegado trayecto
entre Ademuz y Negrón, está la localidad
de Vallanca y su amplio conjunto de áreas
recreativas y merenderos ribereños como
Fuente la Teja, Fuente Romero y Prado
Vega, en los que poder pasar un grato día
de campo. No hay que perder la ocasión
de contemplar desde la ermita de San
Roque de Vallanca la sinfonía de colores
y cromatismos que, cada temporada, el
otoño regala al llegar al bosque de ribera
la caducidad de la hoja.
Fuera de ruta y distante 20 kilómetros
se encuentra Arroyo Cerezo, una recoleta
aldea situada en un apéndice comarcal
y bajo la célebre Cruz de los Tres Reinos,
cumbre que bien ejemplifica la situación
fronteriza y geoestratégica que personaliza
el Rincón de Ademuz.

There exist pockets of art in the heart
of nature, and El Rincón de Ademuz is
one of them thanks to association ADIRA.
Here, some 50 works by sculptors from
Mexico, El Salvador, Portugal, Brazil, the
UK, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, the US,
Venezuela, France, Taiwan, Japan,
Guatemala, Italy and Spain are dotted
along the pathways and in the towns and
villages that make up the sculpture park
of El Rincón de Ademuz. Rambling or
cycling are perfect ways to explore this
district, which has made art its very
nature.
Many of the works have been made
using only what the earth has to offer.
Stone, wood and iron are carved or
wrought at the expert hands of the
artists, lending the landscape of El
Rincón a touch of humanism and
encouraging reflection and an
understanding of the world. It is art
carefully set in its rightful place, on
the stone walls of ancient houses, along
leafy lanes, in woodlands or on steep streets
– art that soon blends so perfectly with
its environment that it would seem to
have been there forever.
This is the case with the extraordinary
sculpture Horse by the Englishman
Philip Bews, which won the Manzana de
Oro or Golden Apple award at the first
biennial exhibition; with the spectacular
faces by Diane Gorvin, entitled Echoing
Walls, which are set into the wall of an
old house in Arroyo Cerezo; with Trujalia,
la vaca loca (Trujalia, The Mad Cow) by
Saculesoj Zeuqzàv Noirrac, which stands
on one of the pathways alongside the River
Turia; and with the unsettling Ventana
(Window) by Ana Medina, an iron and
copper sculpture set atop a stone wall.
Some of the must-see works include
the spectacular sculpture El caminante
(The Walker) by the director of the
biennial exhibitions, Lucas Karrvaz,
which was the first work in the sculpture
park; Manos (Hands) by José Luis
Menéndez, which compares the rough,
workman’s hands of a labourer with
those of the Creator when he first worked
the earth; and Transparencias rurales (Rural
Transparencies) by El Salvador artist
Mauricio Álvarez Geoffroy, which offers
a view of the mountains and the heavens
through holes in the ground.
Miguel Ángel Díaz Soriano is the
artist behind the works Radiografías (Xrays)
and Nuestras Hogueras (Our Homes),
which were created in his foundry
workshop in Torrebaja and represent
the physiognomy and isolation of the
district. Silio Roig Giner is the creator
of the spectacular works Babel and
Círculo del sol (Circle of the Sun). El
labrador (The Labourer) depicts a man
marked by the fatigue of one who works
the land all day long, and is a magnificent
piece by the Argentinian Marcelo Gustavo
Visentini. Manuel Herrero is the artist
responsible for the three suggestive yet
precise wrought-iron sculptures Ave
(Bird), Veleta (Weathervane) and Perro
al Sol (Dog in the Sunshine). Another
sculptor from Torrebaja, Antonio Lucio
Morales, created Levantemos el Rincón
(Let’s Raise Up El Rincón), a portrayl of
the district held aloft by seven hands,
each hand representing one of the seven
towns of El Rincón.

THE TURIA TRAIL

This southerly trail traces the district’s’s
greatest waterway, the River Turia, from
Mas de Jacinto to Casas Bajas, drawing
visitors into the most humanised
landscapes of El Rincón. It’s no
coincidence that it is here, along the length
of this green corridor, that most of the
district’s population of barely 3,000
inhabitants live and where the main
socio-economic activities are concentrated.
This trail reveals the cultivated world of
the fertile banks of the Turia, home to

Midway along the trail, visitors are
greeted with a sudden vision of the rambling
town of Ademuz, which can be admired
from the N-330 or any of the mountains
that overlook the town, such as Castro, Muela
and Horca. The town’s original layout was
mediaeval, and it remains practically
untouched, with huddled buildings hugging
the hillside terraces from Santa Bárbara
Castle right down to the banks of the
Turia.

THE EBRÓN TRAIL

This trail makes for an agreeable stroll along
the lower reaches of the River Ebrón,
through Torrebaja, Los Santos, Castielfabib
and Cuenta del Rato. The abundant waters
of the River Ebrón are home to trout, and
feed the young River Turia as they flow,
crystal clear, from the Albarracín mountains
in Teruel down to Torrebaja. Pleasant and
easy-going as it opens out below, the
valley becomes voracious and intrepid
higher up, among the scarred rock faces
at Castielfabib, as can be appreciated
from the Mirador de Ebrón lookout or
from the craggy heights of the Castle.
Along this trail, walkers can visit the
ruins of the Convento de Guillermo convent,
which lie on the other side of the river, and
thereby discover some of the most spectacular
sceneries that the River Ebrón has to
offer.

THE TRAIL TO RAMBLA DEL VAL

This winding trail leads through one of the
most rugged areas of El Rincón, framed
by the most westerly foothills of the Sierra
de Javalambre mountain range, which is
home to the Region of Valencia’s highest
peak: the 1,386-metre-high Alto de
Barracas. With no permanent water course,
the rugged and forested landscape descends
in an orderly fashion to the River Turia,
draining the lateral valleys of El Mas del
Olmo, Puebla de San Miguel and Sesga.
Along this trail, walkers can enjoy
picturesque picnic spots such as El Mal
Paso, Don Guillén and El Molino de los
Cuchillos, as well as monumental trees
like Las Blancas and Pino Vicente or
lookouts such as Mirar el Bueno. Tortuous
and difficult, the trail will take seasoned
walkers through hamlets and villages
that have managed to survive despite the
arduous terrain.

THE EL BOHILGUES TRAIL

El Bohilgues is a small, tamed tributary
of the river Turia that rises on the slopes
of the Sierra de Santerón mountain range
and that, close to where it joins the Turia
at Ademuz, runs through a steep and
picturesque area of great ecological value
for its plant and animal life, and which is
home to various endemic species.
Running the length of this peaceful path
between Ademuz and Negrón is the locality
of Vallanca with its broad array of recreational
areas and riverside picnic areas such as
Fuente la Teja, Fuente Romero and Prado
Vega, where visitors can spend a lovely day
out in the countryside. A must-see along
the trail is the view from the San Roque
de Vallanca hermitage in autumn time, when
the turning leaves along the river banks
erupt in a riot of glorious colours and
shades.
Some 20 kilometres off the trail stands
Arroyo Cerezo, a sleepy hamlet nestling on
land which juts out from the mainland itself,
below the renowned summit of Cruz de los
Tres Reinos (Cross of the Three Kingdoms):
a mountain crest that perfectly encapsulates
El Rincón de Ademuz’s frontier location
and its geo-strategic importance.

Desde Valencia por la A-3 hasta Utiel,
donde se toma la N-330 a Sinarcas.
La carretera se adentra en la provincia
de Cuenca hasta llegar a Santa Cruz
de Moya y de ahí a Casas Altas,
Casas Bajas y Ademuz. Esta vía atraviesa
la comarca y es eje para la llegada
a Vallanca, Torrebaja o Castielfabib
(carreteras CV-478 y CV-479 respectivamente).
Otra alternativa es desde la CV-35,
que pasa por poblaciones como Llíria,
Casinos, Tuéjar y Aras de los Olmos,
hasta llegar a la provincia de Cuenca,
donde se toma la N-330.
El acceso a la parte oriental del
Rincón de Ademuz se realiza por la
CV-355, en dirección a la provincia
de Teruel y que entra en el Rincón
por la CV-463, por la Puebla de San
Miguel.
From Valencia take the A-3 to Utiel,

El testero de la fachada
frontal está situado en un
punto estratégico que

La fortaleza de Castielfabib se encuentra situada
sobre un cerro que domina la población y que se ha
formado en un meandro del río Ebrón. La iglesia
ocupa el tercer nivel de una torre del castillo que se
erige sobre un pronunciado declive de la ladera oeste
de un promontorio rocoso.
A la fortaleza se accede por el Carrerón, un pasaje
a nivel del tercer piso de la torre donde se han hallado
cuerpos enterrados, como el de una madre y su bebé
con las ropas casi intactas. El carrerón conduce desde
la plaza del pueblo hasta la parte opuesta del promontorio
donde se encuentra el acceso aislado del resto de la
población.
Dentro del templo se han encontrado pinturas
góticas y capiteles tallados que muestran figuras religiosas
testigos de la época. Un ejemplo es la cabeza
de un monje guerrero de la Orden del Temple, a la que
perteneció la iglesia.
La fortaleza data de entre los siglos XIII y XIV, cuando
se construyó el altar en una sola nave, la antigua sala
de armas, rectangular y con los muros testeros planos.
Su espacio interior se dividió en cuatro crujías separadas
por tres arcos apuntados, propios del gótico primitivo.
En el espacio entre contrafuertes se construyeron las
capillas laterales cubiertas con bóvedas de crucería.
Tras el terremoto de 1656 se hizo una gran reforma
que añadiría la capilla de la Comunión, con su cúpula,
y el atrio de entrada, y se planteó para las nuevas
estancias una nueva estructura de ahí que sus cubiertas
sean diferentes a las demás. El muro plano del cabecero
fue eliminado por completo y en su lugar se
erigió un presbiterio.
A los pies de la iglesia, en el lado de la epístola,
se construyeron dos capillas gemelas, las de los dominicos,
con bóveda de crucería estrellada simulada

Las sencillas casas de piedra se agolpan
y trepan sobre la ladera hasta un
cerro del que sobresale la imponente fortaleza
de Castielfabib. En su base emerge
el precioso pueblo, cuyas calles sin
ornato exhiben todo su esplendor y a las
que el silencio reinante les confiere
cierto lirismo. La iglesia fortaleza de
Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles es un edificio
de arquitectura gótica y barroca construido
entre los siglos XIII y XIV, reformado
en el XVII y transformado en el siglo XIX.

fue eliminado y el óculo del mismo fue cegado. El primer
campanario desapareció, erigiéndose uno nuevo
contiguo pero independiente y separado de ella. Como
curiosidad, el testero de la fachada frontal está situado
en un punto estratégico que ilumina el altar un día
y una hora al año.
En la posterior reforma que se realizó durante las
guerras carlistas, y supuestamente para reparar los daños
que sufrió en este conflicto bélico, se convierte en una
iglesia de tres naves, eliminando los apoyos de los arcos
ojivales, apeándolos en las nuevas bóvedas de las
naves laterales. Se amplía de nuevo el presbiterio, eliminando
el paso entre los dos lados de la fortaleza,
y se cubre con bóveda de cañón, sobre la que apoya
una linterna octogonal. Fue entonces cuando se remata
el campanario en ladrillo.

The fortress at Castielfabib is located on a hilltop that
dominates the town and that has been formed in a meander
of the river Ebrón. The church itself occupies the
fourth floor of one of the castle’s towers, overlooking
a steep decline on the western slope of a rocky outcrop.
Access to the fortress is by way of a passage at the
height of the third floor of the tower in which buried
bodies have been unearthed, such as that of a woman
and her baby, discovered with their clothes almost intact.
The passage leads from the town square to the opposite
side of the outcrop, where the access is isolated
from the rest of the population.

The simple stone houses huddle together
on the slope of a hillside crowned by the
imposing fortress at Castielfabib. At its
foot stands the picturesque town, whose
unfussy streets retain their original
splendour and where a lyrical silence
reigns. The fortress church of Our Lady
of the Angels (Nuestra Señora de los
Ángeles) is a building of Gothic and
Baroque architecture that was built
between the 13 th and 14 th centuries,
refurbished in the 17 th century and
converted in the 19 th century.

The fortress dates back to the early 14 th century,
which saw the construction of the single-nave altar,
the former weapons room, which was rectangular with
flat chevet walls. The interior was divided into four spaces
separated by three pointed arches, characteristic of
the early Gothic style. In between the buttresses, side
chapels were built, with groin vaults.
Following the earthquake of 1656, huge reforms
were carried out, which saw the construction of the
communion chapel with its cupola and the atrium at
the entrance, which were designed with completely different
ceilings. The flat header wall was removed in
its entirety and a presbytery was built in its place.
At the foot of the church, on the Epistle side,
twin chapels were erected – the Dominican chapels
– with a simulated star-shaped groin vault adorned with
sculpted cherubim heads The old choir stall was
removed and its oculus sealed. The first bell tower disappeared,
and a new one was built adjoining it, but
independent and separate from the church. Curiously,
the chevet on the feature wall is strategically positioned
so that it illuminates the altar for one hour on a particular
day each year.
The latest reforms were made during Spain’s Carlist
Wars in the 19 th century, apparently to repair the
damage it suffered during the conflict. It was transformed
into a three-nave church and the supports for
the lancet arches were removed to the new vaults of
the lateral naves. The presbytery was extended once
more, eliminating the passage between the two sides
of the fortress, and it was covered with a cannon
vault, upon which stands an octagonal lantern. It was
at this time that the bell tower was faced in brick.

El Restaurante Casa Emilio abrió sus puertas
hace más de cien años, en 1905.
Desde entonces ofrece a sus clientes una
esmerada cocina y la mejor de sus atenciones.

La carta de Casa Emilio se compone
de platos tradicionales como las

The Casa Emilio restaurant first opened
its doors over 100 years ago, in 1905,
and it. has been offering its customers
exquisite cuisine and the best possible
service ever since. The restaurant can seat
up to 120 people spread across three different
rooms, making it ideal for all
kinds of celebrations.
The menu at Casa Emilio features traditional
dishes such as Judías pintas
con morcilla, (pinto beans with black pudding),
Sopa castellana (a variety of vegetable
soup) and the well known Perdiz
en escabeche (preserved quail), plus
many other dishes that are based on
traditional local products but have been
given an innovative, modern and signature
touch, with special emphasis on contrasts.
These include Hongos salteados
con reducción de PX y crujiente de cerdo
(mushrooms sautéed with a Pedro Ximénez
reduction and crisped pork) and Ensalada
de queso de cabra con confitura de
tomate, vinagreta de miel y piñones
(goat’s cheese salad with tomato preserve,

de chocolate (chocolate cake) and Natillas
caseras (home-made custard) and other,
more original offerings such as Tortilla

yogur y helado de chocolate (orange
crepe with lemon aspic, yoghurt cream
and chocolate ice cream).
Casa Emilio, which is closed for dinner
on Sunday and Monday evenings, also
offers a daily set menu for 10 euros. A
la carte meals will cost around 32 euros.

PELOTA DE CODILLO DE JAMÓN
PORK KNUCKLE BALL
INGREDIENTES (Cuatro personas)
1 codillo media curación de jamón
4 hojas de col rizada
50 grs. miga de pan
1 dl. de leche
4 huevos
4 golpes de pimienta
50 grs. de garbanzos puestos a remojo la víspera
1 rama de apio
PREPARACIÓN
Cocer el codillo con las verduras y los garbanzos en olla a presión entre 45 y 60 minutos.
A continuación, escaldar las hojas de col en abundante agua hirviendo, refrescarlas
y reservarlas. Deshuesar el codillo y pasar su carne por la picadora con rallador
fino. Remojar la miga de pan con la leche, añadir los huevos batidos, incorporar el
picadillo del jamón, la pimienta al gusto y rectificar el punto de sal. En un aro de
diez centímetros poner la hoja de col y rellenar con la masa. Cerrar a modo de pelota
y cocer diez minutos en su propio caldo.
PRESENTACIÓN
En plato sopero colocar la pelota en el centro y regar con su propio caldo. Acabar el
plato guarneciendo con las verduras y los garbanzos.
INGREDIENTS (for 4 people)
1 medium-cured pork knuckle
4 kale leaves
50 g breadcrumbs
500 ml milk
4 eggs
4 twists of pepper
50 g chickpeas soaked overnight
1 stick of celery
PREPARATION
Cook the knuckle in a pressure cooker with the greens and the chickpeas for 45 to
60 minutes. Then blanch the kale leaves in plenty of boiling water, rinse with cold
water and set aside. De-bone the knuckle and finely mince the meat. Soak the
breadcrumbs in the milk, add the beaten eggs, add the minced ham, pepper to taste
and rectify the salt levels. Place the kale leaf in a 10 cm ring and fill with the mixture.
Close it up into a ball and cook for 10 minutes in its own juice.
PRESENTATION
Place the ball in the centre of a soup bowl and drizzle with its own juice. Finish by
garnishing with the greens and chickpeas.

avid Ferrer (Xàbia, 1982), número cinco en la ATP, es un miembro destacado
de la nueva armada del tenis español. Futbolero empedernido y
seguidor del Barça, dedica su tiempo libre a cargar las pilas con su fami-
lia y sus amigos. La temporada de 2007, en la que jugó la semifinal del Master
de Shanghai contra el número uno de mundo, al que él considera el mejor tenista
de la historia, Roger Federer, ha sido hasta ahora su mejor momento.
Comenzó a jugar de pequeño en su casa de Xàbia, emulando a su padre que
era jugador aficionado. Hoy, con 26 años recién cumplidos, ocupa el quinto
puesto del ranking mundial. Asegura en esta entrevista que confía, sobre todo,
en su derecha, aunque dice que “para ser un buen tenista hay que ser un jugador
completo”. Con su victoria en el Open de Tenis de la Comunitat Valenciana,
celebrado el pasado mes de abril en el Club de Tenis de Valencia, Ferrer
afronta la temporada 2008.

member of Spain’s new tennis armada. As a die-hard football fan,
he’s a supporter of FC Barcelona and he spends his free time recharging
his batteries with his family and friends. The 2007 tennis season witnessed
the highlight of his career so far, when he played in the semi-final of the Shanghai
Masters against world number one, Roger Federer, who Ferrer believes is the
greatest tennis player in history. He started playing at home in Xàbia when he
was just a boy, emulating his father, who also played tennis and was a huge
fan of the sport. Now, having recently turned 26, David Ferrer is seeded number
five in the world tennis ranking. In this interview with CVNews, he reveals
how he’s particularly confident of his forehand stroke, and that “to be a good
tennis player you have to be an all-round player”. After his victory in the
Comunitat Valenciana Tennis Open Championship last April at Club de Tenis
Valencia, Ferrer is geared up for the 2008 season.

¿Cómo y cuando empieza a jugar al tenis?
Pues fue como jugando, fue a los siete años en la pared
del chalet de mis padres en Xàbia.
¿Considera que es importante el apoyo familiar en la
carrera de un tenista?
Creo que es fundamental. Mis padres siempre me han
apoyado y por ello estaré siempre agradecido. Es
muy importante llegar a casa después de un mal
partido o un mal torneo y que te apoyen.
¿Quiénes han sido sus ídolos durante su aprendizaje
y quienes son sus referentes en estos momentos?
Ivan Lendl fue un gran tenista y consiguió muchas
cosas. Era muy trabajador y siempre me fijaba en él.
Ahora mi referente es Roger Federer, para mí es el
mejor tenista de la historia.
¿En cuál de sus golpes confía más?
Yo confío, sobre todo, en mi derecha. Pero pienso que
para ser un buen tenista hay que ser un jugador completo.
¿Qué necesita un tenista para llegar a ser una figura
mundial?
Trabajo, trabajo, trabajo...
¿Cuál ha sido el mejor partido de su vida?
Uno de los más completos fue el que disputé en el
master de Shanghai contra Rafa Nadal.

Y, ¿con qué rival ha disfrutado más?
Eso es algo difícil de decir, porque todos te hacen correr,
pero guardo un gran recuerdo de cuando jugué en Roma
contra Andre Agassi.
Parece que últimamente le va bien en pista rápida,
¿la cambia por la tierra?
Parece que es lo que tengo que hacer, pero como he
dicho antes un tenista tiene que ser un jugador completo
y también saber jugar en todas las superficies
y no limitarse sólo a una.
¿Ha sido difícil asimilar la presión de los medios, las
peticiones de los aficionados, los compromisos de las
marcas…?
No, en absoluto... Creo que eso va de la mano de los
resultados que se obtienen.
Ganador de tres torneos ATP, semifinalista del US Open,
finalista de la Copa Masters de Shanghai, quinto en
la ATP... Éstos son datos de su mejor temporada, la
de 2007 ¿qué espera de ésta? ¿Cree que será la de
su confirmación como uno de los mejores? ¿Qué torneo
le gustaría ganar?
Yo este año me marco como meta disfrutar jugando
y acercarme a los resultados del pasado año. Como
para todos los tenistas españoles hacer un buen
Roland Garros es un reto, llegar a jugar la final en la
pista central de París sería lo máximo para mí esta
temporada.

¿Qué parte de culpa tiene su entrenador, Javier Piles, en
lo lejos que ha llegado ya en su carrera como tenista?
Mucha, diría que la mayor parte. Sin él seguro que
no estaría donde estoy.
¿Cómo es un día normal en la vida de David Ferrer?
Si estoy de torneo pues centrarme al máximo en el
partido del día. Si estoy en Valencia, a las nueve en
punto estoy en la academia de tenis para empezar jornada.
Y, la verdad es que Javi no me deja volver a casa
hasta que está todo hecho (risas).
¿Qué le gusta hacer cuándo no juega al tenis?
Familia, amigos, leer, descansar, cargar las pilas…
¿Es cierto que es un empedernido futbolero?
Sí. Me gusta el fútbol y lo sigo mucho. En los torneos
en los que participo fuera de España intento ver
siempre todos los partidos que puedo de la liga española.
Es verdad que soy futbolero.
¿Cómo ve el tenis español, en estos momentos?
¿Tiene futuro?
Creo que hay una buena base y que el futuro es
esperanzador. Seguro que salen buenos jugadores
en los próximos años.
¿Qué le parece el nuevo torneo 500 de la ATP de 2009
en el Ágora de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias
de Valencia?
Un lujo. Valencia es mi ciudad favorita, creo es preciosa.
Y dentro de mi profesión que se juegue un torneo
de esa categoría en el Ágora de la Ciudad de la
Artes y las Ciencias es lo máximo. Yo estaré ahí seguro
y ojalá la afición responda.
¿Cree que hay condiciones e instalaciones para disfrutar
de la práctica del tenis en los destinos turísticos
valencianos?
Yo creo que sí. En estos momentos, hay muchos clubes
de tenis que desde siempre están luchando por
nuestro deporte. Para mí Valencia lo tiene todo, absolutamente
todo.
How and when did you start playing tennis?
Well it was just kind of playing against the wall of my
parents’ house in Xàbia
when I was seven.
Do you think family support is important in a tennis
player’s career?
I think it’s essential. My parents have always supported
me and I’ll always be grateful for that. It’s very important
to come home after a bad match or a bad tournament
to people who support you.
Who were your idols when you were learning to play,
and who do you look up to now?
Ivan Lendl was a great tennis player and he achieved
a lot. He was very hard-working and I always watched
him. Now my role model is Roger Federer, who for me
is the best tennis player in history.
Which of your strokes are you most confident of?
I’m particularly confident of my forehand. But I think
that to be a good tennis player you have to be an allround
player.
What do you need in order to become a world-class
tennis player?
Work, work and more work...
What has been the greatest match of your life so far?
One of the most comprehensive was when I played
in the Shanghai Masters against Rafa Nadal.

And which rival have you most enjoyed playing?
It’s hard to say, because they all keep you on your toes,
but I have great memories of when I played in Rome
against Andre Agassi.
It seems that you’ve been playing well on fast courts recently.
Would you change to clay?
Ha ha. I think I’m going to have to, but as I’ve said
before, a tennis player has to be an all-rounder and
must also know how to play on all surfaces, not just
the one.
Winner of three ATP tournaments, semi-finalist in
the US Open, finalist in the Shanghai Masters, seeded
fifth in the ATP... These are some of the figures for
2007, your best season so far. What are you expecting
from this season? Do you think it will be the one
to confirm you as one of the best? Which tournament
would you like to win?
This year, my goal is to enjoy playing and to keep up
the results of last year. Like for all Spanish players,
to do well in the French Open is a challenge, and to
reach the final on centre court in Paris would be the
crowning glory for me this season.
And has it been difficult to cope with the pressure from
the media, the requests from fans, the commitments
to brand names…?
No, not at all... I think it goes hand in hand with the
results obtained.
How much of a part has your trainer, Javier Piles, played
in how far you have come in your tennis career?
A big part, I would say the biggest. Without him I definitely
wouldn’t be where I am today.
Describe an average day in the life of David Ferrer.
If I’m in a tournament then I’m fully focused on the
day’s match. If I’m in Valencia, I’m at the tennis
academy at 9 a.m. sharp to start the day. And, to be
honest, my trainer Javi doesn’t let me go home until
everything’s done (laughs).
What do you like doing when you’re not playing tennis?
Being with family, friends, reading, relaxing, recharging
my batteries…
Is it true that you’re a die-hard football fan?
Yes, definitely. I love football and I follow it a lot. When
I’m playing in tournaments abroad, I always try and
watch as many Spanish league matches as I can. It’s
true that I’m a real football fan.
How do you rate Spanish tennis right now? Does it have
a future?
I think that there are good foundations and that the
future is encouraging. I’m sure there will be good players
emerging over the next few years.
What do you think of the new ATP 500 series tournament
scheduled for 2009 in the Agora at the City
of the Arts and Sciences in Valencia?
A complete gem. Valencia is my favourite city. I think
it’s beautiful. And in my profession, to be playing a
major tournament of that level in the Agora at the City
of the Arts and Sciences is the tops. I will definitely
be there, and hopefully the crowds will respond well.
Do you think there are the conditions and the facilities
for people to enjoy playing tennis in the Valencian
tourist destinations?
Yes, I think so. Right now, there are many tennis
clubs that are always fighting for our sport. For me,
Valencia has everything, absolutely everything.

Bike Lligallo es una actividad deportiva
que se desarrolla en el ámbito
natural de la provincia de Castellón y
da la oportunidad al visitante de conocer
el entorno cultural e histórico de diferentes
comarcas castellonenses. La
actividad de Bike Lligallo es plenamente
deportiva y se desarrolla en bicicleta
de montaña con la que se recorren
pistas y senderos de interés natural, paisajístico,
histórico y cultural. Aunque
la actividad no es competitiva posee una
buena dosis de aventura y el interés reside
en completar el recorrido propuesto
por la organización pasándolo lo
mejor posible.
La Ruta Freda, la Litoral, la de
Blasco de Alagón, la de los Maquis y
la Corta son las cinco rutas propuestas
por los organizadores de Bike Lligallo.
La Ruta Freda se desarrolla enteramente
por Els Ports, El Maestrat y la
Tinença de Benifassà. La de Litoral
recorre los pueblos costeros y las serranías
litorales. La Ruta Blasco de Alagón
es una ruta de dos días por las montañas
del Maestrazgo. La Corta es una
ruta también de uno o dos días por diversas
zonas de la provincia. Y próximamente
tienen previsto poner en marcha
la Ruta de los Maquis, un recorrido
que cubrirá los senderos de las tierras
por donde lucharon los maquis en la provincia.

Bike Lligallo is an outdoor sports
company offering visitors the opportunity
to discover the culture, history and
landscapes of various districts in the
province of Castellón by actively exploring
the countryside on mountain bikes.
Although not competitive, the activity
offers a great deal of adventure and
exercise, with the interest lying in
completing the trail proposed by the
organisers and having as much fun as
possible along the way.
There are five trails proposed by
the organisers at Bike Lligallo: the Ruta
Freda, the Ruta Litoral, the Ruta de Blasco
de Alagón, the Ruta de los Maquis and
the Ruta La Corta.
The whole of the Ruta Freda is
ridden in the cooler temperatures found
in the towns and villages of Els Ports,
El Maestrat and La Tinença de Benifassà,
while the Ruta Litoral takes in the
seaside towns and hills along the coast.
The Ruta Blasco de Alagón trail is a twoday
ride through the mountains of the
El Maestrazgo district and the La Corta
trail can take either one or two days,
covering various areas around the
province. Visitors will soon be able to
enjoy the Ruta de los Maquis trail,
which follows the pathways through
lands in which the province’s Maquis
fought.
Bike Lligallo have trails to suit the
tastes and fitness levels of all participants.

MÁS DE CINCO MIL KILÓMETROS DE SENDEROS
OVER 5000 KILOMETRES OF WALKING TRAILS

La Comunitat Valenciana cuenta en la
actualidad con más de 5.300 kilómetros
de senderos homologados, lo que la convierte
en uno de los mejores destinos para
practicar este deporte. Entre estos senderos,
hay tanto de gran recorrido, es decir,
de más de 50 kilómetros de longitud, como
de pequeño, entre los 10 y los 50 kilómetros,
así como senderos locales, con
itinerarios de menos de diez kilómetros.
Del total de senderos, seis son de gran
recorrido y suman 1.004 kilómetros. Los
más importantes son el GR-7 y el GR-10.
El GR-7 proviene del Peloponeso,
tiene su inicio en el templo de Delfos y
atraviesa el arco mediterráneo: pasa por
Bulgaria, Serbia, Croacia, Eslovenia,
Italia, Francia y Andorra. Una vez salvada
la cordillera pirenaica discurre por las comunidades
españolas del Mediterráneo
hasta Tarifa. En la Comunitat Valenciana
cuenta con una longitud total de 600 kilómetros,
repartido en 36 etapas y la recorre
de norte a sur, entra por Fredes y sale
por Pinoso.
El GR-10 se encuentra integrado en
la red de senderos europeos, con sus 1.600
kilómetros de recorrido entre Puçol y
Lisboa sirve de unión entre los mares que
limitan la Península. El recorrido comienza
en Puçol, a orillas del Mediterráneo,
se adentra en la sierra Calderona, pasa
por Segart, Serra y Gátova y continúa por
las últimas estribaciones de la Sierra de
Javalambre. Desde Andilla asciende
hasta el collado de Bardés donde el
sendero llega a tierras aragonesas hasta
Arcos de Salinas.

The Region of Valencia currently boasts
over 5,300 kilometres of officially
recognised walking trails, making the
Region one of the greatest destinations
for lovers of rambling and hiking. These
trails include not only long-distance
routes over 50 kilometres long but also
short-distance trails of between 10 and
50 kilometres, and local pathways less
than 10 kilometres long.
Of all the trails, six are long distance,
covering a total of 1,004 kilometres,
the longest of which are the GR-7 and
the GR-10.
Coming from the Peloponnese in
Greece, the GR-7 starts at the temple of
Delphos and arcs its way across the
lands of the northern Mediterranean,
through Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia,
Italy, France and Andorra. Once it has
crossed the Pyrenees, it cuts through the
Spanish Mediterranean regions all the way
down to Tarifa. In the Region of Valencia,
it stretches from north to south for a
distance of 600 kilometres divided into
36 stages, entering the Region at Fredes
and exiting at Pinoso.
The GR-10 forms part of the European
network of walking trails, covering the
1,600 kilometres from Puçol in the
province of Valencia to Lisbon in Portugal
and linking the Iberian Peninsula’s
eastern and western coastlines. From
the Mediterranean town of Puçol it heads
inland through the Sierra Calderona
mountain range by way of Segart, Serra
and Gátova, and continues into the final
foothills of the Sierra de Javalambre
range. From Andilla it then makes its way
up to the summit of the Collado de

DE LA SAFOR
La nueva Zona de Especial Protección
para las Aves (ZEPA) Montdúver-Marjal
de La Safor protege el hábitat de 40
especies distintas de aves que se reproducen
y habitan en la comarca, algunas
de ellas en peligro de extinción.
Esta ZEPA, contemplada en el
proyecto de ampliación de la red de zonas
de especial protección para las aves de
la Comunitat Valenciana que ha
desarrollado la Conselleria de Medio
Ambiente, tiene una superficie de más
de nueve mil hectáreas, de las que más
de un millar corresponden a marjal. La
zona protegida incluye los municipios
de Ador, Almiserat, Barx, Benifairó de
la Valldigna, Gandia, Llutxent, Pinet,
Quatretonda, Rótova, Simat de Valldigna,
Tavernes de Valldigna, Xeraco y Xeresa.
El área alberga poblaciones nidificantes
de especies como la garza imperial,
el fumarel cariblanco, la focha
moruna y el carricerín real. Además de
éstas, nidifican en la zona de marjal,
el avetorrillo común, la garcilla cangrejera,
el calamón común, la cigüeñuela y
chorlitejo patinegro. Especial mención
merece la cerceta pardilla, un
ave amenazada mundialmente.
Allí se crían también poblaciones
de especies de rapaces como el águila
real, el águila azor perdicera, el halcón
peregrino, el búho real y la culebrera
europea. Respecto a las aves de invernada,
pese a que no son especialmente
significativas, destacan la cerceta
pardilla, la malvasía cabeciblanca y el
aguilucho lagunero.

ZEPA, a new Special Protection Zone
for Birds known as the Montdúver-
Marjal ZEPA in the district of La Safor
has been created to protect the habitat
of 40 different species of birds that live
and breed in the district, some of
which are endangered species.
Created as part of the regional
Department for the Environment’s
scheme to expand the network of
special bird protection zones in the
Region of Valencia, this ZEPA covers
over 9,000 hectares, of which more than
1,000 hectares are wetlands. The
protected area includes the municipalities
of Ador, Almiserat, Barx, Benifairó de
la Valldigna, Gandia, Llutxent, Pinet,
Quatretonda, Rótova, Simat de Valldigna,
Tavernes de Valldigna, Xeraco and
Xeresa.
The area is home to nesting
populations of species such as the
purple heron, the whiskered tern, the
red-knobbed coot and the moustached
warbler. Nesting in the wetlands are
species that include the little bittern,
the squacco heron, the purple swamphen,
the black-winged stilt and the
Kentish plover. Worthy of special
mention is the marbled duck, a species
that is endangered worldwide.
The zone also harbours populations
of birds of prey such as the golden eagle,
Bonelli’s eagle, the peregrine falcon,
the eagle owl and the short-toed eagle.
Migratory species also visit the area,
although their numbers are relatively
small, and these include the whiteheaded
duck and the Western marsh
harrier as well as the marbled duck.

The unusual jopo de lobo (cynomorium
coccineum), a plant that only grows in
saline environments, is flowering early
this year in the natural park known as
the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de
la Mata y Torrevieja. Literally meaning
“wolf’s tail” in Spanish, this parasitic
species has a rather bizarre appearance
and it can be spotted thanks to its
unmistakeable, truncheon-shaped maroon
flowers. The plant lives underground
throughout the year, and only shows
itself with the arrival of the hot weather.

Tabarca, la esencia del Mediterráneo

El Ayuntamiento de Alicante ha editado
un folleto que invita a disfrutar de
los bellos parajes de Tabarca. A once
millas náuticas de la ciudad de Alicante
se halla la única isla habitada de la
Comunitat Valenciana. La isla de Tabarca
ha sido pionera en muchos aspectos,
uno de los más representativos fue su
declaración como Reserva Marina del
Mediterráneo por la excelente calidad
de sus aguas y por la biodiversidad de
su flora y fauna. Además, las murallas
que rodean su núcleo urbano han sido
declaradas Conjunto Histórico Artístico

Con una longitud aproximada de

en su día refugio para los piratas berberiscos.
En el siglo XVIII, Carlos III ordenó
fortificarla y levantar en ella un

The Alicante City Council has brought
out a brochure inviting readers to enjoy
the beautiful landscapes of Tabarca
Island. Lying 11 nautical miles off the
city of Alicante, Tabarca is the Region
of Valencia’s only inhabited island. The
island has been pioneering in many
ways, most notably for its official
declaration as a Mediterranean Marine
Reserve because of the excellent quality
of its waters and the biodiversity of its
flora and fauna. Similarly, the walls
surrounding the town have been officially
declared a Historical and Artistic Site
and an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The island’s coastline, which is
approximately 1,800 metres long and
400 metres across at its widest point,
was once a refuge for Berber pirates.
In the 18 th century, Spain’s King Carlos
III ordered the island to be fortified and

LOS CINCO AÑOS DE L’OCEANOGRÀFIC HASTA
NOVIEMBRE
THE OCEANOGRÀFIC AQUARIUM CELEBRATES ITS 5 TH
BIRTHDAY UNTIL NOVEMBER
El mundo marino y sus circunstancias,
el trabajo y la experiencia de biólogos,
investigadores y cuidadores y
dar a conocer la historia del mayor
acuario de Europa son los objetivos
de la exposición de imágenes que
muestra L’Oceanogràfic de la Ciudad
de las Artes y las Ciencias. Más de
un centenar de fotografías recorren
la trayectoria del complejo en una exposición
con la que se conmemora su
quinto aniversario.
La muestra, ubicada en el Edificio
de Acceso y en otros espacios como
el Antártico y Tropicales, reúne
una colección de imágenes captadas
por el fotógrafo Javier Yaya a lo
largo de estos cinco años. La espectacular
muestra permanecerá en el
L’Oceanogràfic hasta el próximo mes
de noviembre.
Las imágenes son instantáneas que
muestran al visitante cómo fue la
construcción del complejo, la llegada
de los primeros animales y los nacimientos
que han tenido lugar en él,
como el de la primera beluga nacida
en un acuario europeo.
Todas las fotografías reflejan la
experiencia que han vivido millones
de visitantes en las instalaciones.
Desvelan el trabajo diario que realizan
los veterinarios y biólogos y muestran
los talleres bioeducativos y los
proyectos de investigación que se
desarrollan en el complejo. Las imágenes

The aim of the exhibition at the
Oceanogràfic aquarium in the City of
the Arts and Sciences is to reveal the
mysteries of the underwater world, to
show the hard work and experience
of the aquarium’s biologists, researchers
and handlers, and to present the
history of Europe’s largest aquarium.
Over 100 photographs have been
used to trace the evolution of the
complex as part of an exhibition in
celebration of the 5 th anniversary of
its founding.
Located in the Edificio de Acceso
building and in other areas such as
the Antarctic and Tropics zones, the
exhibition comprises a collection of
images taken by photographer Javier
Yaya over the past five years. This
spectacular exhibition will remain
on show at the Oceanogràfic until
November.

first ever beluga to be born in a

XXI CICLO INTERNACIONAL DE CONCIERTOS VILLA
DE NAVAJAS
THE 21 ST INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SEASON IN
NAVAJAS
El paraje natural del Salto de la Novia,
en Navajas, acogerá a partir del 5 de julio
y a lo largo de los meses de julio y agosto,
la vigésimo primera edición del Ciclo
internacional de Conciertos Villa de
Navajas, considerada como una de las
citas culturales más importantes que se
organizan en la comarca del Alto Palancia.
El programa ofrece un completo repertorio
con danza y conciertos de jazz, cuerda,
guitarra, metales, trombones, cámara
y banda de música.
La alegoría de la leyenda del Salto
de la Novia con coreografía de Mamen
García inaugura el ciclo musical el primer
sábado de julio. La representación
tendrá lugar junto a la Cascada del Brazal,
de más de 60 metros de altura, situada
en el cauce del río Palancia, desde el que,
según la leyenda, una novia saltó al río
por amor.
El 12 de julio actuará el grupo de jazz
Jordi Albert y Latin Groove; el 19 será el
concierto del conjunto de cuerda Rivera
Camerata y el 26 Cavatina Dúo ofrecerá
un concierto de flauta y guitarra.
El primer concierto del mes de agosto
tendrá lugar el día 2 y será de metales
a cargo de Spanish Brass Luur
Metalls & Luis González y Rubén Marqués;
el 9, el cuarteto de trombones 212
Quartet ofrecerá sus últimas creaciones
y el 16 será el turno de Big Band
Ensemble Trombe. La Unión Artística
Musical de Navajas será la encargada
del concierto de homenaje a la colonia
de valencianos de Navajas el 23 de
agosto. Finalmente, un concierto de
cámara y trompeta solista será el de homenaje
a Vicente López, el 30 de agosto,
y pondrá punto y final al vigésimo primer
ciclo.

Starting on Saturday 5 th July and continuing
throughout the months of July and August,
the landscape of El Salto de la Novia in
Navajas will echo to the tune of the 21 st
“Villa de Navajas” International Concert
Season. Considered one of the greatest
cultural events in the whole of the Alto
Palancia district, the programme offers a
comprehensive repertoire featuring dance
and concerts in which audiences can
enjoy jazz, string orchestras, guitar music,
brass bands, trombones, chamber music
and marching bands.
The musical season kicks off on the
first Saturday in July with La alegoría de
la leyenda del Salto de la Novia (The
Allegory of the Legend of El Salto de la
Novia) choreographed by Mamen García.
The performance will take place next to
the 60-metre-high Cascada del Brazal
waterfall along the course of the River
Palancia, from which legend has it that
a young bride-to-be threw herself, all for
love.
On 12 th July there will be a performance
from the jazz group Jordi Albert and Latin
Groove, on the 19 th a concert by string
musicians Rivera Camerata and on the 26 th
the Cavatina Dúo will treat the audience
to a concert of flute and guitar music.
The first concert in August will be
held on the 2 nd courtesy of Spanish Brass
Luur Metalls & Luis González with Rubén
Marqués, with the 9 th seeing a performance
of the latest offerings from trombonists the
212 Quartet and on the16 th it will be the
turn of the Big Band Ensemble Trombe.
The Unión Artística Musical de Navajas
will stage a concert in tribute to the
Valencian town of Navajas’ patron saint’s
day on 23 rd August. Finally, a concert
featuring chamber music and a solo
trumpeter in tribute to Vicente López will
bring this, the 21 st season, to a close on
30 th August.
