Prevención del uso indebido
de drogas y alcohol
Por: Dr. Anthony T. Minotti y María Elena
García Carullo
En la High School, trabajadora social
y consejera de drogas y alcohol,
Helene Fremder, trabaja
con “Above the Influence – Por encima
Entonces traen a
carreras de muelle tensor y pizza y bocadillos;
la YMCA de Rye colabora en Café
Thursdays.
Actualmente, los estudiantes están
creando un anuncio de servicio público
para presentar en los teatros de Larchmont-Mamaroneck
para la campaña de
RADAR, “Be a Parent , Not a Friend”, dirigida
a los padres, la cual comienza martes,
17 de abril. Mike Nerney, experto en
crianza y prevención, hablará con la comunidad
en el Auditorio de la Hommocks
esa noche a las 7:30pm. Discutirá por qué
es tan importante asegurarse que los adolescentes
no beban y cómo pueden criarse
más eficazmente para lograr esto. La campaña
destacará el papel importante que
los padres pueden desempeñar en la vida
de un adolescente. Han dicho los adolescentes
que sus padres son las personas en
quienes más confían y que dependen en
ellos para guiarlos.
Hay programas en que participan estudiantes
anualmente. “Sticker Shock,” ocurre
en abril-mayo; estudiantes van a A&P,
Stop and Shop, fiambrerías, bodegas, y
ponen etiquetas (“¡¡¡Oye, tú!!! ¡¡¡Es ile-
gal proveerles alcohol a menores de los
21!!!”) a cervezas y refrescos de vino. En
“Role Models,” estudiantes en grupos de
3-4 hablan con clases de grados 5 y 8 sobre
tomar decisiones saludables. “Myths
and Facts” tiene factores semanales y
mensuales en carteles por los pasillos y en
la televisión de la MHS.
Prevention of drug and alcohol abuse
By: Dr. Anthony T. Minotti y María Elena
García Carullo
At the High School, social worker
and drug and alcohol counselor,
Helene Fremder, works
with “Above the Influence,” a group
of about 25 students recommended by
their guidance counselor and selected
because they are drug and alcohol free.
These students agree to let it be known
that they are in “Above the Influence,”
in RADAR, and do not use drugs or alcohol.
They serve as models and work
to encourage healthy living without
drugs. The goal for these students is for
them to know that “it is healthy for them
to be who they are”. Some go to a fourday
workshop in July, where they experience
activities one can do without drugs.
They then bring to the High School some
of the activities they have learned. These
include Café Thursdays, which is held one
Thursday a month with video games, ping
pong, dance instruction, fortune telling, a
picture booth, Sumo wrestling, a climbing
wall, bungee races, and pizza and snacks;
the Rye YMCA is a partner in Café Thursdays.
Currently, students are creating a Public
Service Announcement to be shown in
Larchmont-Mamaroneck theatres for the
Mamaroneck High School “Above the Influence” students preparing a Public Service
Announcement for the RADAR campaign, “Be a parent, not a friend”.
de servicio público para la campaña de RADAR “Sea un padre, no un amigo”.
RADAR campaign, “Be a Parent , Not a
Friend”, directed at parents, which begins
on Tuesday, April 17. Parenting and prevention
expert, Mike Nerney, will address
the community at the Hommocks Auditorium
that evening at 7:30pm. He will discuss
why it is so important to make certain
teens do not drink and how they can be
parented more effectively to accomplish
this. The campaign will highlight the important
role parents can play in the life of
a teenager. Teenagers have said that their
parents are the persons they trust the most
and they depend on them to guide them.
There are programs in which students
participate each year. “Sticker Shock,”
occurs in April-May; students go to
A&P, Stop and Shop, delis, bodegas,
and attach stickers (“Hey you!!! It is
ILLEGAL to provide alcohol for people
under 21!!!”) to beers and wine
coolers. In “Role Models,” students
in groups of 3-4 speak to 5th and 8th
grade classes about making healthy
decisions. “Myths and Facts” has factors
for the week and month on posters
throughout the halls and on MHS
television.
