Painter Pepe Dámaso receives the
‘Betancuria, Historic Capital of the
Canaries’ award

Painter Pepe Dámaso has been awarded the
«Betancuria, Historic Capital of the Canaries» prize at
the occasion of Día de Canarias celebrations from
Betancuria’s Ayuntamiento. The ceremony took place
on the heights of Betancuria, at the mirador known as
Los Corrales de Guize, in front of the statues Guize
and Ayoze, the two aboriginal icons of Maxorata and
Jandía. Pepe Dámaso received his prize from the hands
of Betancuria’s mayor, Marcelino Cerdeña, and the
president of Fuerteventura’s Cabildo, Mario Cabrera.
This award, given every year by the Ayuntamiento of
Betancuria, aims at rewarding the efforts from people
and groups who work to protect the diversity of the
Canaries, away from capitals’ centralism and their
arguments, defending the individuality of each island
as the defining key of the Archipelago.
Pepe Dámaso said as he received the award «I am the
one who is grateful to those who chose me for this Prize.
I am especially grateful that it is happening here in Fuerteventura,
one of the islands that can be called small but
not a peripheral. Those few islands that have awaken
and fought, and whose habitants have learned how to
save them from over-development and speculation».
«This is not a frivolous island. This is an island that
inspires contemplation for its rigor, humility and
silence. It is this humility that Unamuno focused on,
and defined it from its rigor and talent. Manrique did
it, who I had the opportunity to visit Betancuria and its

Der Maler Pepe Dámaso erhielt heute Mittag den
Preis ‘Betancuria, historische Hauptstadt der Kanaren’,
der anlässlich des Tages der Kanaren von der
Gemeinde von Betancuria vergeben wurde. Die
Preisverleihung fand auf den Berggipfeln von
Betancuria statt, am Aussichtspunkt, der als „Corrales
de Guize» bekannt ist, am Fuße der Statuen Guize
und Ayoze, der beiden einheimischen Guanchenkönige
von Maxorata und Jandía. Pepe Dámaso wurde der
Preis vom Bürgermeister von Betancuria, Marcelino
Cerdeña, und dem Präsidenten des Cabildo von Fuerteventura,
Mario Cabrera, übergeben.
Dieser Preis wird jedes Jahr von der Gemeinde von
Betancuria als Anerkennung für die Arbeit von Personen
oder Einrichtungen verliehen, die sich im Laufe
ihres Werdegangs für den Pluralismus auf den
Kanaren und gegen den Zentralismus der Hauptinseln
und den Inselstreit eingesetzt haben und die
Besonderheiten jeder Insel als Wesenszug des
Archipels verteidigten.
Pepe Dámaso betonte bei der Preisübergabe „ich
bin derjenige der denen Dank und Anerkennung
schuldig ist, die mir diesen Preis übergeben. Ich
bedanke mich ganz besonders dafür, dass dies hier
auf Fuerteventura geschieht, auf einer der Inseln, die
möglicherweise als klein bezeichnet werden können,
jedoch nicht als peripher. Einige Inseln sind aufgewacht

BIOSPHERE RESERVE
During his intervention, Pepe Dámaso also referred
«to the great benefits of putting the emphasis on
Fuerteventura’s Biosphere Reserve» which means that
from now on «it is recognised universally. This is our
pride, that of the island and of all the Canary Islands.
This is an example of the path to follow».
ATLANTIC HEROES
Pepe Dámaso talked about his wish for his collection
of «Atlantic Heroes» to remain in Fuerteventura, within
the project of collaboration with Fuerteventura’s Cabildo,
the Canarian Government and the owners of the
area where the Mirador de los Canarios is due to be
built, «in a small chapel shaped like a conch, that would
look towards Cofete’s beaches on one side and towards
the Atlantic’s immensity on the other, in a privileged site».
PRIZE OF PROTEST
The mayor of Betancuria, Marcelino Cerdeña, then
added that «awarding the «Betancuria, Historic Capital
of the Canaries» prize and the interest generated
by the fact that it coincides with Día de Canarias
celebrations bring the whole event to a new level. At
Betancuria’s Ayuntamiento, we have seen this as an
authentic protest, for centralist Canarians, who only
focus on capitals and are unaware of each island’s
individuality, to become aware of what the Canary
Islands really mean, that it is about the islands and
their habitants».
«Of course, here in Betancuria we are claiming the
historic role of this village and municipality in the way
that the Canaries are configured nowadays. When in
1404 Europeans created their first governmental,
religious and administrative institutions they made
Betancuria become the first town of its kind in the
Canaries and therefore the first capital», says the mayor.
«We were worried to see how centralism and artificial
debates about capitals, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and
the Canaries, was making the other islands,
municipalities and their habitants become silent
witnesses to this debate that wasn’t theirs. Of course,
we don’t expect this Prize to solve those dynamics that
are often ridiculous, provincial and bourgeois. What
we aim for is to catch people’s attention. It is a cry out
saying that there are demands, people and problems
that need attention outside the capitals. And what
could be better than doing it in the name of what was
the first ever capital in the Canaries», adds the mayor.
The Cabildo’s president, Mario Cabrera, made
allusions that «this prize is a tribute to those who work
for the diversity of the Canaries, away from centralism
and false island’s disputes that in actual fact do not
correspond to us Canarian. The Canaries are islands
that respect their territories, their culture and people».

Bescheidenheit wurde sie seit Unamuno betrachtet, der
sie mit seinem Talent und mit seinen Worten beschrieb.
Er definierte sie vom Skelett aus. Dies tat Manrique, den
ich sogar begleiten konnte, als er Betancuria und das
Kloster dieses Ortes besuchte. Und dies tat auch Juan
Ismael, an den auf großartige Weise in dem Zentrum
erinnert wird, das seinen Namen trägt», erklärte er.
BIOSPHÄRERESERVAT
Bei seiner Rede bezog sich Pepe Dámaso auch auf
„das Wunder, welches die Ernennung zum
Biosphärenreservat von Fuerteventura bedeutet»,
wodurch ermöglicht wird, dass die Insel von jetzt an
„von einem universellen Standpunkt aus anerkannt
und geschätzt wird. Darauf sind wir alle stolz, die ganze
Insel und die ganzen Kanaren. Dies ist ein Beispiel für
den Weg, den wir gehen müssen».
ATLANTISCHE HELDEN
Pepe Dámaso teilte den Anwesenden seine Absicht
mit, dass seine Sammlung der ‚atlantischen Helden’,
die im Rahmen eines Projektes realisiert werden soll,
an dem der Cabildo von Fuerteventura, die Regierung
der Kanaren und die Besitzer der Zone beteiligt sind, in
Fuerteventura bleiben soll, am Aussichtspunkt der
Kanaren „in einer schneckenförmigen Kapelle an einem
außergewöhnlichen Ort, wo man von der einen Seite
auf die Strände von Cofete schaut und von der anderen
Seite auf die unermessliche Weite des Atlantik».
EIN PREIS ALS FORDERUNG
Seinerseits betonte der Bürgermeister von
Betancuria, Marcelino Cerdeña bei seiner Rede: „Die
Verleihung des Preises ‚Betancuria, historische
Hauptstadt der Kanaren’ und das Interesse dies genau
am Tag der Kanaren zu tun, ist wesentlich bedeutender
als nur ein Festakt. Im Rathaus von Betancuria haben
wir diese Veranstaltung als authentische Forderung
geplant, als einen Mahnruf für diese zentralistischen
Kanaren, die nur die Hauptstädte sehen und nicht die
Besonderheiten jeder Insel anerkennen. Das wodurch
sich die Kanaren wirklich auszeichnen, sind ihre Inseln
und deren Bevölkerungen».
„Natürlich fordern wir hier in Betancuria, heute auf den
Kanaren der historischen Rolle gerecht zu werden, die
diese Stadt und diese Gemeinde hatten. Als die Europäer
hier 1404 ihre ersten Institutionen der religiösen und
verwaltenden Regierungen ansiedelten, machten sie
dadurch Betancuria zu der ersten richtigen Stadt der
Kanaren und damit zu ihrer Hauptstadt», erklärte er.
„Es besorgt uns zu sehen, wie der Zentralismus in
der künstlichen, streiterischen, hauptstädtischen und
kanarischen Debatte aus den übrigen Inseln, aus den
übrigen Gemeinden und aus den übrigen Einwohnern
der Kanaren Zaungäste gemacht hat, die überrascht
und oft unbeteiligt bei einer Debatte anwesend sind,
die nicht ihre ist. Wir beabsichtigen mit diesem von
uns vergebenen Preis nicht, diese Dynamik zu lösen,
die in vielen Fällen lächerlich, provinziell und sogar
bourgeois ist. Wir möchten damit nur die
Aufmerksamkeit auf uns lenken. Es soll ein Mahnruf
sein, der zu verstehen gibt, dass es außerhalb der
Hauptinseln, weit weg von dem streitsüchtigen Diskurs
auch noch Forderungen, Menschen und Probleme
gibt. Und es gibt keine bessere Weise dies zu tun, als
mit dem Namen der ersten Hauptstadt der Kanaren»,
fügte der Bürgermeister hinzu.
Der Präsident des Cabildo, Mario Cabrera, deutete
unterdessen an, dass „dieser Preis eine Anerkennung
für diejenigen» ist, „die für den Pluralismus auf den
Kanaren arbeiten, entfernt von dem Zentralismus und
den falschen Inselstreitigkeiten, die nichts mit den
Kanaren zu tun haben. Für die Kanaren, die aus ihren
Inseln bestehen und ihr Land, ihre Kultur und ihre
Bevölkerungen respektieren».
