¿Cómo y cuándo surgió la imagen de la cabra
Fuerte y de qué forma se comenzó a relacionar
con Fuerteventura?
La imagen de Fuertecabra nació como iniciativa
de New Territory Fuerteventura, empresa familiar dedicada
a la comercialización de vestimenta y representada
por varias tiendas en la isla. Desde su nacimiento
en 1989, New Territory Fuerteventura siempre
ha estado en continua búsqueda y desarrollo de
una imagen que represente a Fuerteventura tanto a
nivel local como internacional. Los primeros borradores
de Fuertecabra nacieron un día en 1996, inspirados
en la importancia que siempre ha tenido el
peculiar animal de la cabra en la isla.
¿Qué representa la cabra Fuerte?
Fuerteventura siempre ha sido una isla dedicada
plenamente a la ganadería. La cabra siempre ha sido
el animal con más presencia en la isla, ya en el siglo
XVI se habla de la existencia de unas 60.000 cabras.
Hoy en día, la cabra majorera forma parte del paisaje
de la isla de la misma manera que las dunas o
las aulagas. Actualmente hay unas 90.000 cabras
censadas, que frecuentemente se pueden ver vagando
a su libre antojo por cualquier terreno de la isla o
incluso impresas en símbolos oficiales como escudos
de ayuntamientos y Cabildo. Hasta la capital de
Fuerteventura, hoy Puerto Rosario, se llamaba Puerto
Cabras en tiempos pasados.
Es por ello que cuando nació la imagen de
Fuertecabra, no tardó en convertirse en el símbolo
propio de los majoreros y en el souvenir perfecto para
cualquier visitante.
¿Tienen registrada esta imagen de Fuertecabra?
Sí, actualmente el símbolo de Fuertecabra está
registrado en la Oficina de Patentes y Marcas a nivel
nacional y desde hace poco incluso a nivel internacional,
siendo la empresa New Territory Fuerteventura
la única entidad autorizada a comercializar la
marca y siendo denunciado cualquier intento de plagio
o copia.

How and when was Fuertecabra created and how
did it start being linked to Fuerteventura?
The image of Fuertecabra started as an initiative
of New Territory Fuerteventura, a family business
dedicated to commercialising clothes and
represented by various shops on the island. Since its
launch in 1989, New Territory Fuerteventura had kept
on looking for and developing an image that could
represent Fuerteventura both on national and
international levels. The first drafts of Fuertecabra
were created one day in 1996 and were inspired by
the importance that this animal has always had on
the island.
What does Fuertecabra represent?
Fuerteventura has always been an island mainly
dedicated to livestock farming. The goat has always
been the animal the most present on the island, it
was reported that in the 16 th century there were
already 60.000 goats on the island.
Nowadays, the Fuerteventura goat is part of the
island’s scenery just like the dunes or the lagoons.
Currently there are 90.000 goats recorded on the
island, that can be seen walking around freely all over
the island or as an official symbol as a coat of arms
for Ayuntamientos and Cabildos. The capital of Fuerteventura,
now called Puerto del Rosario, used to be
called Puerto Cabras. This is why when the image of
Fuertecabra was created it soon became the actual
Majorero symbol and the perfect souvenir for visitors.
Is the image of Fuertecabra registered?
Yes, the Fuertecabra symbol is actually registered
at the Registry of Patents and Brands on national

Suponemos que, aunque protegido como marca,
habrá habido plagios…
Sí, ha habido mucha gente queriendo aprovecharse
del reconocimiento de Fuertecabra y los plagios y
procesos judiciales han sido numerosos e intensos.
También hemos tenido muchos plagios usando distintos
animales y nombres de islas que paulatinamente
también están siendo denunciados.
Hacer que esta patente de marca e imagen sea
respetada esta costando mucho tiempo y esfuerzo,
pero estamos dispuestos a defenderlo e cada caso.
Ya hemos ganado algunos casos importantes y, tras
varios juicios, han tenido que indemnizarnos.
Pero hay posibilidad de negociar con ustedes la
comercialización de los artículos con la marca
Fuertecabra?
Desde luego, pueden comprar y tener nuestra representación.
Además hay zonas como El Castillo y
Costa Calma, donde nosotros no tenemos tiendas.

Yes, many people have wanted to take advantage
of the recognition that Fuertecabra benefits from and
plagiarism and court cases have been numerous and
intense. We have also had a lot of plagiarism using
various animals and names of islands that have
steadily been prosecuted.
To have the brand patent and image respected is
very costly in time and efforts but we are prepared to
keep on defending it. We have already won a few
important court cases and after various trials we have
been compensated.
But is there a way to negotiate with you for the
commercialisation of articles with the
Fuertecabra brand?
Yes of course, people can purchase the right to
represent us. Furthermore there are areas like El
Castillo and Costa Calma where we don’t have shops.
But in any case it can always be negotiated to have
and commercialise our branded products.
Where is this image used? Are there shops where
products of your brand are sold?
The original and only Fuertecabra is exclusively
commercialised on the island of Fuerteventura. There
are four shops in total that are dedicated to selling
our wide range of products that includes: stickers, Tshirts,
towels, bags, key rings, etc.
Two of those shops are in the North of the island

Pero en cualquier caso siempre pueden negociar tener
nuestros productos de marca y comercializarlos
en sus tiendas.
¿Dónde se utiliza esta imagen? ¿Existen tiendas
donde se venden productos con este logo?
La original y única Fuertecabra se comercializa exclusivamente
en la isla de Fuerteventura.
Hay un total de cuatro tiendas, que se dedican a la
venta de su amplia gama de productos y en las que
se pueden encontrar de todo: pegatinas, camisetas,
toallas, bolsos, llaveros, etc.
Dos de estas tiendas se encuentran en el norte en
la avenida principal de Corralejo y las otras dos tiendas
se pueden encontrar en la avenida principal de
Jandía, en los centros comerciales El Saladar y El
Faro.
En que se diferencia la Fuertecabra de New
Territory de otras tiendas de «souvenirs», además
de la imagen patentada?
Específicamente en la calidad de nuestros productos.
No hemos querido ser una tienda más, de las
que compras algo para llevar de recuerdo que luego
nadie usará.
Tanto en el diseño como en la calidad de nuestros
tejidos nos hemos esforzado en dar una imagen diferente,
prendas que las personas deseen llevar
puestas, las disfruten y las regalen.
La marca Sol´s que usamos en las camisetas tiene
un compromiso con el comercio justo. También
utilizamos tintas no tóxicas y un algodón de cultivo
biológico sin fibras sintéticas.
La realización de diseños nuevos cada temporada
con la Fuertecabra y la amplia presencia de la marca
en los medios locales de comunicación como prensa,
mapas, eventos patrocinados e incluso guaguas
y taxis, hacen que la marca Fuertecabra sea siempre
una imagen actual.

What is the difference between Fuertecabra of
New Territory and other souvenir shops, apart
from the patented image?
The difference lies in the quality of our products.
We didn’t want to be just another shop, where people
buy something to bring back as a souvenir that no
one will use later. It is both the design and the quality
of our fabric that makes us different, clothes that
people like to wear, enjoy and brings back as presents
for others.
The brand Sol’s that we use for T-shirts has got
agreements with Fair Trading. We also use non toxic
tints as well as biologically cultivated cotton without
synthetic fibres.
New Fuertecabra designs are created every season
and the brand is very present in the media, maps,
sponsored events as well as buses and taxis, which
means that the Fuertecabra brand will always be up
