Palacio de Congresos
Los pasados días 30 y 31 de mayo, se celebró en el Palacio de
Congresos de Cataluña la XXIV Reunión del Círculo de Economía de
Barcelona que, en esta ocasión y con motivo del 50 Aniversario de
la Institución, se denominaron Jornadas del Cincuentenario.
Presidió las Jornadas El Rey Juan Carlos y asistió también el
Ministro de Industria, Comercio y Turismo, Miguel Sebastián.
Presidió la inauguración Jordi Hereu, Alcalde Barcelona, y dio la
Conferencia Inaugural el President de la Generalitat, José Montilla.
Intervirieron Javier Solana, Secretario General del Consejo de la UE
y Alto Representante de la PESC, Rodrigo Rato, Director Gerente
del FMI (2004-2007), Josep Oliu, Presidente de Banc Sabadell y
Vicepresidente de Círculo de Economía, Mariano Rajoy, Presidente
del Partido Popular, Artur Mas, Presidente de Convergència i Unió,

De los debates entre políticos, académicos y empresarios se puede
concluir que estamos viviendo, en el mundo occidental, el regreso de
la Política. Contra las voces que hace tiempo preconizaron el fin de la
Historia, las Jornadas sirvieron para demostrar, una vez más, que nos
hallamos ante el inicio de una nueva etapa de inciertas consecuencias.
Y en esta nueva etapa, las grandes decisiones políticas que cada país
adopte serán determinantes para su bienestar económico y para su
posición geoestratégica en el mundo.
La mejora de la enseñanza fue el problema que todos –políticos,
empresarios y académicos– identificaron como el reto más
importante al que se enfrenta España. En palabras del Presidente
del Círculo, José Manuel Lara, la crisis económica actual será vista
como una anécdota en el año 2015; en cambio, las decisiones que
tomemos hoy para mejorar la educación en nuestro país resultarán
determinantes para una generación.

the setting for the 24th Meeting of the Barcelona Círculo de Economía.
The event was titled the 50th Anniversary Roundtable in honour of the
milestone.
The roundtable was presided over by King Juan Carlos, with Miguel
Sebastián, the Spanish Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade
also present. The event was inaugurated by Jordi Hereu, the Mayor
of Barcelona, and the opening talk was given by José Montilla, the
President of the Government of Catalonia. Those present included Javier
Solana, the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and the
High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy; Rodrigo
Rato, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund from 2004
to 2007; Josep Oliu, the President of Banc Sabadell and the Vice President

Artur Mas, the President of Convergència i Unió; Carlos Slim, the President

The conclusion drawn from the discussion between the politicians,
academics and businesspeople present was that the West is witnessing the
return of politics. Contrary to those who heralded the end of history some
years ago, the roundtable demonstrated that the West is once again at the
beginning of a new era of uncertainty. In this new era, the major political
decisions taken by each country will be focused on improving its wellbeing
and geo-strategic position.
Everyone present at the event identified the need to improve education
as the biggest challenge faced by Spain. José Manuel Lara, the
President of the Círculo de Economía, said that in 2015 the present
economic crisis would be seen as a mere anecdote, while decisions
taken now to improve education in Spain would have an impact on an
entire generation.

El pasado día 15 de octubre, la Infanta Cristina presidió en el Palacio
de Congresos de Cataluña la entrega del Premio Planeta 2008, junto al
Presidente de la Generalidad, José Montilla, el Alcalde de Barcelona, Jordi
Hereu, y el Presidente del Grupo Planeta, José Manuel Lara, que asistió
con su esposa, Consuelo García de Lara.
El escritor donostiarra Fernando Savater, con la novela ‘La hermandad
de la buena suerte’, resultó ganador del LVII Premio Planeta, dotado con
601.000 euros. Por su parte, la escritora castellanomanchega Ángela
Vallvey quedó finalista con la obra ‘Muerte entre poetas’. El fallo del Jurado
se dio a conocer en la cena literaria en Barcelona, como es tradición.
Asistieron a la entrega de premios casi 1.000 personas del mundo de la
cultura. El jurado se reunió antes del mediodía en las inmediaciones de la
sede del Grupo Planeta para valorar las diez obras finalistas y, sobre las
dos de la tarde, la suerte ya estaba repartida. Alberto Blecua, Alfredo Bryce
Echenique, Pere Gimferrer, Álvaro Pombo, Carmen Posadas, Rosa Regás y
Carlos Puyol dieron su respaldo a la obra presentada por Fernando Savater.
No faltaron a la cita numerosas caras conocidas: el escritor y presentador
Boris Izaguirre, finalista del Premio Planeta 2007 por su obra Villa Diamante,
con sus padres; Juan Antonio Samaranch con su pareja, Lluïsa Sallent; la
presentadora Ana García Siñériz con su amigo el escritor Fernando Schwartz,
Premio Planeta 2006 por la novela Vichy; Luis del Olmo, Rosa y Salvador Tous,
la escritora Ana María Matute, Josep Piqué, que asistió con su reciente esposa,
la directora de informativos de Antena 3, Gloria Lomana y Risto Mejide con su

On 15 October 2008, the Planeta Prize awards ceremony took place at the
Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña. The Infanta Cristina, Duchess of Palma de
Mallorca, presided over the event, which was also attended by José Montilla,
the President of the Government of Catalonia, Jordi Hereu, the Mayor of
Barcelona, and José Manuel Lara, the President of the Planeta Group, who was
accompanied by his wife, Consuelo García de Lara.
The 72nd Planeta Prize was won by Fernando Savater for his novel La
Hermandad de la Buena Suerte (The Good Luck Brotherhood). The writer, who
is from San Sebastian in the Basque Country, received €601,000 in prize money.
Ángela Vallvey, who hails from Castilla-La Mancha, was a finalist with her work
Muerte entre Poetas (Death Among Poets). As is traditional, the panel of judges
announced their decision during a literary dinner in Barcelona.
Almost a thousand guests from the world of culture attended the event.
The panel of judges met before noon in the vicinity of the Planeta Group’s
headquarters to assess the work of the ten finalists. Around 2 pm, their minds
had been made up. Alberto Blecua, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Pere Gimferrer,
Álvaro Pombo, Carmen Posadas, Rosa Regás and Carlos Puyol gave the nod to
the novel written by Fernando Savater.
The ceremony was full of well-known faces, including writer and presenter Boris
Izaguirre, who was a Planeta Prize finalist in 2007 with his work Villa Diamante
(Diamond Villa) and who was accompanied by his parents; Juan Antonio
Samaranch, who was accompanied by with his partner, Lluïsa Sallent; presenter

Rosa and Salvador Tous; the writer Ana María Matute; newlyweds Josep

El premio se concede a los personajes que han destacado, dentro de su especialidad, durante el año
2008. Asistieron 1.600 invitados.

Awards ceremony. The event, which was attended by 1,600 guests, took place at the Palacio de Congresos de
Cataluña and was hosted by journalist Luís del Olmo. Protagonistas Awards are given to the people who excel in
their field throughout the year.

Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña
Gran Gala del Deporte 2008, 22 de enero 2008, tuvo lugar en el
Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña. Premió al tenista Rafa Nadal y a la
nadadora de sincronizada Gemma Mengual como mejores deportistas
del año. La velada tuvo muchos momentos inolvidables y reunió a la
élite deportiva española a todos los niveles. Presidieron el President
de la Generalitat, José Montilla, y Javier Godó, Conde de Godó. La
Gala de Mundo Deportivo acogió a 1.035 invitados y distinguió en
las diversas categorías a nueve modalidades deportivas distintas
–fútbol, basket, ciclismo, atletismo, natación, hockey, sincronizada,
balonmano y tenis–, una buena muestra de la profundidad de los
éxitos alcanzados en el mejor año de la historia de nuestro deporte.
La óptima salud del deporte español y catalán es algo que
coincidieron en señalar en sus discursos tanto el president Montilla
como Jaime Lissavetzky, Secretario de Estado para el deporte y
presidente del jurado de la Gala.
La 61 edición de la Gran Gala de Mundo Deportivo, el más veterano de
los premios deportivos de España, tuvo como anfitrión a Javier Godó,
Conde de Godó y presidente del Grupo Godó y asistieron también la
Secretària General de l’Esport, Anna Pruna; el Delegat del Govern en
Catalunya, Joan Rangel; el presidente de la Diputació de Barcelona,
Antoni Fogué, y el Tinent d’Alcalde de l’Ajuntament de Barcelona,
Carles Martí, así como dirigentes deportivos como el Presidente
Honorario del COI, Juan Antonio Samaranch, y cuatro presidentes de
clubs de la Primera División de fútbol: Joan Laporta (FC Barcelona),
Dani Sánchez Llibre (RCD Espanyol), Enrique Cerezo (Atlético de

On 22 January 2009, the annual El Mundo Deportivo Grand Gala took
place at the Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña. The awards for best
sportsman and sportswoman of 2008 were won by tennis star Rafa Nadal
and synchronized swimmer Gemma Mengual. The evening was full of
unforgettable moments and brought together Spanish sportspeople of
all levels. The event was presided over by José Montilla, the President of
the Government of Catalonia, and Javier Godó, the Count of Godó, and
was attended by over a thousand guests. Nine sports - namely football,
basketball, cycling, athletics, swimming, synchronized swimming, hockey,
handball and tennis - were represented in the awards, which demonstrates
the depth of achievement in a year considered to be the best in Spanish
sporting history. The rude health of sport in Spain and Catalonia was
mentioned in the speeches given by Montilla and Jaime Lissavetzky, the
Spanish Secretary of State for Sport and the President of the Gala Panel.

Madrid and Villareal, respectively.
On 31 May 2008, Pronovias presented its 2009
collection at the Palacio de Congresos de
Cataluña. The audience was immersed in
a world of romantic, almost ethereal brides
dressed in lace, guipure, taffeta and crystals.
A romantic representation of the personality
of every bride-to-be was found in the form
of elegant and perfectly modelled fishtail
dresses and sleek Empire-waist dresses
encrusted with crystals that evoked the most
stunning styles of the Napoleonic era. In
contrast, there were also light, minimalist
gowns for more sophisticated brides seeking
practicality without sacrificing elegance.
One designer who stood out in the sea of
new textures and sensations was Manuel
Mota. His collection transformed each
bride into a vision of pure, airy beauty,
thanks to the use of sheer fabrics such
as chiffon and tulle embroidered with
mother-of-pearl, crystals and silk threads.
His dresses were subtly bohemian and
mysterious and lent the brides an aura that
was almost magical.

el Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña para hacernos partícipes de
un mundo de novias románticas, casi etéreas, vestidas de encajes,
guipures, taffetas y cristales.
Cada novia encuentra aquí una la romántica representación de su
personalidad en forma de elegantes y perfectamente modeladas
colas de sirena o pulcros cortes imperio acristalados que evocan el
más bucólico estilo napoleónico.
El contraste lo ponen vestidos minimalístas y ligeros para novias
más sofisticadas para las que prima la practicidad sin dejar de lado
la elegancia más sublime.
Entre todo este mar de nuevas texturas y sensaciones destaca
Manuel Mota, cuya colección hace de cada novia un ser puro y
volátil gracias a tejidos vaporosos como gasas y tules, bordados en

Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña
El Auditorio del Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña en Barcelona acogió el pasado domingo
8 de febrero a las 18,00 horas la VII edición del Desfile Solidario “AQUÍ PINTAMOS TODOS”.
El objetivo es recaudar fondos y dar a conocer el trabajo realizado desde seis entidades
sin ánimo de lucro que concentran sus esfuerzos en mejorar la calidad de vida de niños
y niñas que sufren alguna discapacidad, enfermedad o situación de abandono. Asistieron
diversas personalidades relevantes de la sociedad catalana.
Más de 800 personas acudieron a la cita, en la que desfilaron 91 niños luciendo las
colecciones Primavera/Verano de firmas de moda como Boboli, Buff, Chupa Chups,
Desigual, Guillermina Baeza, Imaginarium, Mayoral, KL2, Schuss, Tuc Tuc, Victorio &
Lucchino Junior o Victoria. Desde el año 2000, Caf Gestión, organiza el Desfile Benéfico de
Moda Infantil, bajo el lema Aquí pintamos todos.
Durante un día se intenta que los pequeños se olviden de sus problemas y disfruten de un
entorno festivo, compartiendo con sus padres, hermanos, y amigos, la fiesta-desfile.
At 6 pm on Sunday, 8 February 2009, the auditorium at the Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña. in
Barcelona was the setting for the 7th edition of the “Everyone Matters” Fashion Show Benefit. The
show’s objective was to gather funds and promote the work done by six non-profit organizations that help
improve the quality of life of children who are disabled, sick or abandoned. Leading figures from Catalan
society attended the event.
The show was attended by over 800 people, who watched 91 children model the Spring/Summer
collections of firms such as Boboli, Buff, Chupa Chups, Desigual, Guillermina Baeza, Imaginarium,
Mayoral, KL2, Schuss, Tuc Tuc, Victorio & Lucchino Junior and Victoria. Caf Gestión has organized the
children’s fashion show benefit since 2000.
The event, whose slogan is “Everyone Matters”, allows the children to forget their problems for a day, enjoy the
festive atmosphere and participate in the fashion-show party with their parents, siblings and friends.

Roberto Torregrosa es el Director General del Hotel Rey Juan Carlos
I-Business & City Resort. Su formación empresarial, tenacidad y
capacidad de gestión le han convertido en uno de mejores profesionales
europeos de la hostelería. El pasado octubre recibió el galardón a mejor
Director de Hotel de España, el premio Directivo Plus 2008. El Hotel
también acaba de recibir el premio Eventoplus como mejor lugar para
la organización de eventos.
Roberto Torregrosa (1964) lleva en el sector más de 25 años, es MBA
en Administración de Empresas por la prestigiosa escuela de negocios
EAE donde también es formador, y diplomado en CETT/UB donde
imparte clases en el Máster.
Roberto Torregrosa is the General Manager of the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I
Business and City Resort. His business training, tenacity and managerial skills
have made him one of the leading European professionals in the hospitality
industry. In October 2008 he received the 2008 Directivo Plus award for the
Best Hotel Manager in Spain. The hotel also recently received the Eventoplus
award as the best venue for event organization.
Roberto Torregrosa was born in 1964 and has been working in the industry for
more than 25 years. He has an MBA from the prestigious EAE business school,
where he also teaches, and a Diploma from the CETT School of Hospitality,
Catering and Tourism Studies, which forms part of the Universitat de Barcelona
(UB), where he also teaches classes in the Master’s Degree Programme.

Entre otras cualidades se le reconoce a usted es
la tenacidad. ¿Cuál ha sido su trayectoria hasta
llegar a la Dirección del Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I?
Llevo trabajando 28 años en el sector. No
solamente en la hostelería sino también en la
restauración. En hostelería y restauración creo
que lo he hecho todo: camarero de restaurante,
cocinero, recepcionista, etc. Con 24 años
tuve la oportunidad de liderar a un equipo de
80 personas en el mejor camping de España.
Después ocupé el cargo de Director de noche en el
Hotel Hilton de Barcelona, primer establecimiento
de esta cadena en España. Posteriormente viví 10
años de vida profesional en el atractivo proyecto
del Hotel Alimara del grupo CETT/UB, lo cual
era ideal al ser compatible con mi otra pasión, el
mundo académico.
One of the qualities you are known for is tenacity. Please
describe your career up until the time you joined the
management of the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I complex?
I have been working in the industry for 28 years, but
not just in the hotel industry. I’ve also worked in the
restaurant industry. I think I’ve done it all in the hotel
and catering industry. I’ve worked as a waiter, a cook
and a receptionist, among other positions. When I was
24 I had the chance to manage a group of 80 people
at the best camping facility in Spain. I then became
the night manager at the Hilton Hotel in Barcelona,
the chain’s first establishment in Spain. Afterwards,
I spent 10 years of my professional career working
on the attractive project of the Hotel Alimara, which
belongs to the CETT/UB group. That job was perfect
because it was compatible with my other passion: the
academic community.

¿La valoración de la formación es un elemento clave de
su perspectiva?
Efectivamente. Doy algunas clases en el CETT/
UB y en la Escuela de Administración de Empresas
porque me encanta el mundo académico. Creo que
es un contrapeso muy positivo a la actividad laboral
y valoro extraordinariamente la formación práctica,
especialmente en este sector; si puedo seguiré
contribuyendo todo lo que me sea posible.
¿Cómo entra en contacto con HuSA, la empresa
familiar de Joan Gaspart?
Yo había trabajado en Ritz –actualmente Palace- cuando
era el hotel más importante de Barcelona. Y casi después
de 20 años vuelvo a la familia HUSA cuando esta cadena
alquila el Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I por petición del Sr Joan
Gaspart 1 de enero de 2007.
en estos últimos años: ¿ha cambiado el modelo de hotel?
En la base no ha cambiado: el objetivo sigue siendo superar
las expectativas de nuestros clientes. Lo que han cambiado
son esas expectativas, lo que espera el cliente. Con la
variedad y cantidad de hoteles que hay las expectativas y
exigencias de los clientes cada vez son mayores y nuestro
reto diario es no solo cumplirlas sino excederlas, creando así
un vínculo de fidelidad con el cliente y esperando su regreso.
¿Y eso como se concreta en el rey Juan Carlos I?
¿Los ciudadanos perciben que es mucho más que
un hotel?
Nuestro primer objetivo es recuperar este
establecimiento para la ciudad de Barcelona. Y eso
significa reposicionar el Hotel en el núcleo urbano.
Es un establecimiento emblemático de la capital
porque efectivamente es mucho más que un Hotel.
Creemos que los ciudadanos de Barcelona pueden
llegar a disfrutar mucho de nuestro complejo por ser
tan único: Contamos con variedad de restaurantes
algunos de los cuales son al aire libre, jardines
centenarios, tres piscinas, dos de ellas climatizadas,
parkings, sin olvidar del Palacio de Congresos de
Cataluña, sede de numerosos y relevantes eventos
destinados a los habitantes de la ciudad. Además,

sido finalista como uno de los mejores del mundo.
Nuestro objetivo es llegar a ser el mejor Resort
urbano del mundo. En Europa no existe un espacio

¿Cuál es la tipología de los clientes? ¿Cuáles son las
exigencias en calidad?
Predominan los asistentes a congresos y reuniones durante
los días laborales, estos vienen en su mayoría de países
europeos liderados por nuestro propio mercado nacional.
Para adaptarnos aún mejor a este segmento de mercado
creamos hace años la asociación Barcelona Conference
Mile, que une la capacidad hotelera de los hoteles más
próximos de la Diagonal con la capacidad de nuestro Palacio
de Congresos, siendo así capaces de organizar eventos
hasta 2.000 asistentes. Las exigencias de este sector las
cubrimos con éxito pues somos un resort con más de 15
años de experiencia en lo que denominamos segmento MICE
(Meetings, Incentices, Congresses & Exhibitions).
También somos el hotel escogido por el cliente de empresa
en viaje de negocios por la infraestructura de nuestro
complejo, proximidad al aeropuerto y servicios como la Planta
Ejecutiva. Sin olvidar el cliente de ocio que nos visita durante
temporadas vacacionales y fines de semana de todo el año
para disfrutar de la combinación de explorar una ciudad
como Barcelona con todo lo que nuestro resort les ofrece.
Existen tres elementos que nos hacer ser muy exigentes en la
calidad. En primer lugar que el hotel es cinco estrellas de lujo.
Cinco estrellas obligan, pero las iniciales G.L. comprometen.
En segundo lugar, formamos parte de The Leading Hotels
of the World, la prestigiosa asociación que agrupa a los
400 hoteles más lujosos del mundo, con estándares muy
exigentes en cuanto a producto y servicio. Una de las exigencias
fundamentales se refiere a la cualificación del personal lo cual
obliga a establecer un sistema de formación permanente.
Nuestro objetivo y reto diario es ofrecer un servicio de
excelencia en un complejo hotelero singular.
Is training important, in your opinion?
Absolutely. I teach classes at the CETT-UB and EAE
because I love the academic community. I feel it is a
very positive way to balance out my job and I really
think practical training is important, especially in this
industry. If I can, I’ll continue contributing as much as I
am able to.
How did you make contact with HuSA, the family
business of Joan Gaspart?
I had worked at the Ritz (now the Palace) when it was
the most important hotel in Barcelona. And now, 20
years later, I’m back with the HUSA family, given that
the chain began renting the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I on 1
January 2007 at the request of Joan Gaspart.
Has the model of the hotel industry changed much in
recent years?
Its essence hasn’t changed much: the aim continues
to be to exceed our guests’ expectations. What
has changed are those expectations, what guests
expect. With the variety and number of hotels, guest
expectations and demands have increased and our dayto-day
challenge is not just to meet them, but to go one
step further to make a connection that generates loyalty so that
guests come back.
And how is that manifested at the Hotel rey Juan Carlos I? Do
the people of Barcelona see it as much more than a hotel?
Our chief aim is to recover this establishment for the city of Barcelona.
And that means repositioning the hotel as an urban centre. It is an
emblematic establishment in the city because it is effectively much
more than a hotel. We believe our hotel has a lot to offer the people
of Barcelona because it is so unique: we have different restaurants,
some of which are outdoors; the gardens are more than a hundred
years old; there are three swimming pools, two of which are heated;
there is plenty of parking space; and, of course, there is the Palau de
Congressos de Catalunya, where numerous major events are held
that are of interest to the people of the city. Moreover, the Royal Club:
Fitness & Spa was recently listed as a finalist in a ranking of the best
spas in the world.
Our aim is to become the best urban resort in the world. There is
no complex of this kind in any city in Europe.
What kind of guests does the hotel attract? What quality
standards are followed?
For the most part, our guests on weekdays are people attending
conventions and meetings. Most of them come from European
countries and the Spanish market is the clear leader. To adapt
the hotel even more to this market segment, years ago we
created the Barcelona Conference Mile association, which
combines the capacity of the hotels that are closest to Avinguda
Diagonal with the capacity of our Palau de Congressos de
Catalunya so that events attracting as many as 2000 people
can be organized. We can successfully cover the needs of
this sector because we are a resort with more than 15 years’
experience in what is known as the Meetings, Incentives,
Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) segment.
We are also the hotel of choice for guests on business trips
because of the infrastructure of our complex, which is close
to the airport, and the services we offer, such as the Executive
Floor. We also cater to people who stay at the hotel for pleasure
during holiday periods and weekends throughout the year to
enjoy the combination of sightseeing in a city like Barcelona
with everything our resort has to offer.
There are three things that show just how strict we are when
it comes to quality. First, the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I is a
five-star luxury hotel. Having five stars calls for very high
standards, but the luxury category involves an even higher
commitment. Secondly, we form part of the Leading Hotels
of the World, the prestigious association of more than 400 of
the most luxurious hotels in the world, all of which have very
high standards in terms of products and services. One of
the basic requirements relates to staff qualifications, which
means the hotel must have a continuous training system.
Our goal and day-to-day challenge is to offer excellent
service in a unique hotel complex.

The last great designer architect
Enric Miralles, fallecido en el año 2000, y
Benedetta Tagliabue (Milán, 1963) formaron el
taller EMBT en 1994. Uno de los más prestigiosos
talleres de arquitectura del mundo. Muchas de
sus obras están en Barcelona pero sus clientes
son de todo el mundo. En este momento EMBT
prepara el Pabellón Español de la Expo Shanghái
de 2010.
Enric Miralles es considerado el arquitecto
español de su generación de mayor proyección
internacional. Posiblemente el último gran
arquitecto de una época. Estudió en la Escola
Tècnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona
(Etsab) y en la Universidad de Columbia, centros
a los que volvería pocos años después en calidad
de docente. Tras su formación, Miralles montó
estudio propio con su primera esposa, Carme
Pinós, con la cual firmó ya obras de proyección
internacional, como el cementerio de Igualada
(1991) y la Escuela Hogar en Morella (1994) -
ambas finalistas del premio Mies van der Rohe- o
el polideportivo de Huesca (1993).
Su segundo matrimonio con la arquitecta
Benedetta Tagliabue coincidió con una gran
internacionalización de sus encargos, algunos
de ellos de gran envergadura. Por ejemplo, el
Parlamento de Edimburgo.
Destaca la remodelación del Ayuntamiento de
Utrecht, un auditorio universitario en Frankfurt,
la ampliación del Museo Cárcova de Buenos

Aires, o un muelle en Salónica. Miralles tenía
varias obras en distintas fases en Catalunya.
También cuenta con una estación de tren y un
pabellón de meditación en Japón. Entre otras
distinciones, Miralles mereció el León de Oro de
la Bienal de Venecia (1996) y el Premio Nacional
de Arquitectura (1995).
el parque de Diagonal Mar
El Parque de Diagonal Mar ya se ha convertido en
una atracción para los ciudadanos de Barcelona
y turistas. Es un parque para disfrutarlo como
un jardín o un patio. La pasión de Miralles se
concentra en una arquitectura de sentimiento,
delicada. Para la emoción.
En 1997 Miralles indicaba claramente las
perspectivas de su proyecto: “Diagonal Mar Parc
es un gran parque. El paseo principal, una especie
de Rambla, conecta directamente la Diagonal con
la playa próxima, cruzando el Cinturón Litoral. El
resto de los caminos que cruzan el parque se van
transformando en una serie de pistas de juego:
patinar, tren, bicicletas. Pasear. El paseo principal
sigue el borde de un gran lago, que quizás junto
con la superficie arbolada son quien da carácter al
parque. Es una gran superficie de agua en la que
distintas fuentes, un salto de agua y la vegetación
de los bordes permiten oxigenar el agua, para
que sea un lugar de recreo. La presencia del agua
caracteriza la vegetación que se desarrolla

siguiendo el carácter de marismas cerca del mar y del lago, para ir creciendo
en altura y en densidad hasta llegar a las calles colindantes”.
Mercat de Santa Caterina
El Mercat de Santa Caterina es una intervención en Ciutat Vella de Barcelona.
Una situación en que las nuevas construcciones se sobreponen a las
existentes. Los arquitectos proponen que no sea tan fácil distinguir entre
rehabilitación y nueva construcción. Como no existe una preocupación por el
interior, la cubierta será la gran fachada. El toldo multicolor e imaginativo de
un zoco que resalta creativamente del entorno.
La nueva sede de gas natural (1999 - 2007)
El edificio de Gas Natural se sitúa cercano a las pequeñas callejas de la
Barceloneta y junto a los edificios altos de Barcelona. Tiene la verticalidad
de un edificio de oficinas y la fragmentación en distintas escalas. Un
gran voladizo le permite abrirse a la Barceloneta pero forma un espacio
público singular. Las grandes ventanas le hace adaptado al espacio y los
volúmenes abstractos le hacen confundir con otras construcciones.
The late Enric Miralles, who died in 2000, set up the EMBT architecture studio in
1994 with his Milanese wife Benedetta Tagliabue. It has since become one of the
most prestigious architecture studios in the world. Many of the studio’s works
are in Barcelona, but it draws clients from all over the world, and at present it is
working on the Spanish Pavilion for the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
Enric Miralles is considered to be the most internationally renowned Spanish
architect of his generation, and perhaps the last great architect of his era. He studied
at the ETSAB School of Architecture in Barcelona and at Columbia University in New
York City, and within a short space of time returned to teach at both schools. After he
finished his training, Miralles set up his own studio with Carme Pinós, his first wife,
and soon began working on internationally renowned projects such as the cemetery
in Igaulada (1991), the boarding school in Moralla (1994) (both of which were finalists
for the Mies van der Rohe Award) and the municipal sports centre in Huesca (1993).
His second marriage, to architect Benedetta Tagliabue, coincided with a series of
major international commissions, including some very prestigious projects such as
the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh.
In addition to several projects he undertook in Catalonia, other highlights in
Miralles’ career include his remodelling work on the Utrecht Town Hall, the
expansion of the Cárcova Museum in Buenos Aires, the university auditorium
in Frankfurt, the pier in Thessaloniki and the train station and the Unazuki
Meditation Pavilion in Japan. Miralles was the winner of the Golden Lion award
at the 1996 Venice Biennale and the 1995 Spanish National Architecture Award,
among other honours.
Diagonal Mar park
Diagonal Mar Park has become a popular destination for tourists as well
as the people of Barcelona. It is a space that can be enjoyed as one would
a garden or patio, and reflects Miralles’ passion for delicate architecture
that evokes feeling and emotion.
In 1997, Miralles made his thoughts on the project clear: “Diagonal Mar Park is a large
space. Its main pathway is a kind of Rambla that connects Avinguda Diagonal with the
beach, crossing the Barcelona ring road along the way. The rest of its paths become
a series of playgrounds where people can skate, cycle and stroll. The main pathway
runs alongside a large pool which, along with the abundance of trees, gives the park
its character. The pool is a large body of water with several fountains, a waterfall and
vegetation around its edges that keep the water oxygenated and make it an ideal leisure
spot. The presence of water gives the vegetation something of the character of the
marshes that are found near lakes and the sea, that grow in height and density until they
reach the nearby streets”.
Santa Caterina Market
Santa Caterina Market is a striking new addition to Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella; an example of
a new construction superimposing itself over existing ones. The architects intended to blur
the lines between a renovated and a new structure, and as they were not concerned about
the interior of the market, its cover became the main façade. The imaginative multicoloured
canopy, reminiscent of an Arabic souq, emphasizes the creativity of the setting.
The new headquarters of Gas natural (1999-2007)
The Gas Natural building is located close to the narrow streets of Barceloneta and the tall
buildings of Barcelona. It has the verticality of an office block and the fragmentation produced
by juxtaposed structures, with a large section that juts out and opens the building up to nearby
Barceloneta and forms a unique public space. The building’s large windows enable it to adapt to
its setting, while its abstract forms make it easily confused with other structures.

La Barceloneta es uno de los barrios con más personalidad y más
entrañables de Barcelona. El barrio marinero de cualquier ciudad
mediterránea pero que aún alberga secretos, imágenes singulares y un
atractivo turístico indudable. El recorrido por sus callejas, estrechas y
húmedas, es olvidarse de la Barcelona tradicional y hacer una incursión
al año 1753 en que empezó a edificarse como barrio de pescadores y
portuarios. El barrio mantiene el aire de pueblo ajeno a la gran ciudad.
Está en franca remodelación. La estructura urbana del barrio está
formada por viviendas de apenas 30 metros cuadrados que ya dejan paso
a rehabilitaciones modernas, incluso a instalación de algunos ascensores
y a población más joven, a menudo, con inclinaciones artísticas. El
ambiente, especialmente en verano, es turístico pero deja percibir
interesantes aspectos. Por ejemplo, los bares normalmente disponen
de un mástil donde alrededor de Pascua se instalan los pendones de
alguna organización, guardados cuidadosamente en vitrinas interiores.
Corresponde a asociaciones de múltiples tipos: corales, deportivas.
Existen más de 20 “corales”, exclusivamente masculinas, la mayoría
fundadas antes de 1950. Es sin duda, afirman los sociólogos, la zona de
Barcelona con mayor densidad de asociaciones populares y ciudadanas.
Su playa es una de las más animadas de la ciudad tanto de día como
de noche, cuando abren los chiringuitos y bares musicales instalados
en la misma arena donde se puede ir a cenar o a tomar una copa hasta
altas horas de la madrugada. Y sigue con los olores a sal, a tapas de los
chiringuitos y a humanidad.
La estación de Metro de Barceloneta (L4) es un buen punto de partida para
cualquier itinerario por la zona. También se puede descubrir el barrio con
Las Golondrinas, típicas embarcaciones que visitan el puerto y que tienen
su salida ante el monumento a Colón.
Museo de Historia de Catalunya
Desde el edificio del Palau de Mar comienza la ruta por el Passeig Joan de
Borbó. En el Palau de Mar se encuentra actualmente el Museu d’Història
de Catalunya (Plaça Pau de la Vila, 3. Tel. 932 254 700). El museo muestra
una exposición permanente sobre la historia de Cataluña. La terraza de su
cafetería es un excelente mirador sobre el barrio y el puerto.
Muy cerca del museo, junto al Moll dels Pescadors, se levanta la Torre del

Reloj. Se trata de la construcción más antigua de la zona. Funcionó como
faro del puerto hasta mediados del siglo XIX. El atardecer es la mejor hora
para acercarse al lugar porque algunos barcos pesqueros atracan a partir
de las cinco de la tarde y, del mismo modo que en pueblos pesqueros de
la costa, también se realiza la subasta de pescado en la Llotja.
Desde aquí y en dirección a la playa, el barrio se abre a la parte izquierda
con su aspecto más tradicional. Balcones con la ropa tendida, comercios de
todo tipo, bodegas, bares y restaurantes, algunos de mucha calidad en la
cocina del pescado. Porque la Barceloneta es uno de los mejores lugares de
la ciudad para probar pescado fresco. O, si se prefiere, las tapas: pequeñas
raciones de productos muy variados y elaborados artesanalmente. Una de las
más típicas es la bomba, una bola de patata rellena de carne y acompañada

de salsa picante con el clásico all i oli. Y la imprescindible caña, un vaso
de cerveza de barril que siempre se sirve muy fresco.
En el barrio no faltan iglesias. La iglesia barroca de Sant Miquel
del Port es interesante. Los amantes del flamenco también tienen
que hacer una parada obligatoria en la fuente que hay cerca de la
calle Sant Carles. Se construyó en homenaje a la bailaora Carmen
Amaya, nacida en este barrio cuando La Barceloneta era lugar de
gitanos y chabolas. En la década de los sesenta, las chabolas se
desmantelaron.
La Barceloneta también comunica con el Port Vell, la zona de la
ciudad que Barcelona ganó al mar y a la que también se puede
acceder desde la pasarela que comienza al final de la Rambla. Aquí

todo tipo, restaurantes y bares musicales, que comparten espacio con

El IMAX (Moll d’Espanya) es el cine de las películas 3D. El Aquàrium
(Moll d’Espanya) es el acuario más grande de Europa y permite
observar la vida marina del Mediterráneo.
No podemos olvidar el nuevo mercado, obra del equipo de Josep
Miàs, terminado en 2007: una construcción que se retuerce entre las
pequeñas calles. Para los arquitectos es un “collage con unos peces
fantásticos de Cesar Manrique, unos dibujos para niños que podían
contener y explicar la alegría de esta gente, su vivacidad, su energía,
su ilusión a pesar de muchas, a menudo, dificultades”.

Barceloneta is full of character and is one of the most charming
neighbourhoods in Barcelona. A fishing district like those that can be
found in any other Mediterranean city, it holds extraordinary secrets and
scenes that attract many tourists. A trip through Barceloneta’s narrow,
damp side streets enables the visitor to forget traditional Barcelona
and go back to the year 1753, when this port and fishing district began
to emerge. It still feels like its own town, separate from the main city.
Today the area is currently undergoing renovation; the apartments
that make up the neighbourhood (most of them scarcely 30 m2 in size)
are being modernized and refurbished. Lifts are being installed and a
younger, often artistically inclined, population now lives in the area. The
atmosphere is touristy (especially in summer), but that does not diminish
Barceloneta’s interesting customs and traditions. For example, most
bars and restaurants have masts, where they hang banners at Whitsun.
The banners belong to different social groups, such as choirs and sports
associations and are usually carefully kept inside glass display cases.
There are more than 20 exclusively male choirs in the area, the majority
of which were founded before 1950, and sociologists confirm that
Barceloneta is without a doubt the neighbourhood with the most local
societies and organizations.
Day or night, Barceloneta’s beach is one of the liveliest in the city.
Visitors can eat and drink until late into the night in the chiringuito bars

and music bars that are right on the sand. The neighbourhood is charged
with the smell of salt, food from the chiringuitos and humanity. A good
place to begin a visit to the area is the Barceloneta Metro station (L4).
The neighbourhood can also be discovered from the sea on one of the
golondrina boats that embark for trips around the port from the jetty in
front of the Columbus monument.
The Museum of the History of Catalonia
The Museum of the History of Catalonia (Plaça Pau de la Vila 3. Tel. 932
254 700) is currently housed in the Palau de Mar near Passeig Joan
de Borbó. The museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of
Catalonia and its café terrace has an excellent view out over the port.
Close to the museum, the Clock Tower rises up on the Pescadors
Wharf. This is the oldest monument in the area and was used as a port
lighthouse until the mid-19th century. Late afternoon is the best time to
visit Barceloneta, as the fishing boats tend to dock after 5 pm and the
fish they catch is auctioned off in the wholesale fish market, as is the
case in many small fishing villages along the coast.
From here, and heading in the direction of the beach, the neighbourhood
opens out to the left and takes on a more traditional appearance. Balconies
are hung with clothes and there are shops of all kinds, as well as wine
cellars, bars and restaurants, some of which specialize in quality fish

cuisine. Barceloneta is one of the best places in the city to try fresh fish dishes,
as well as tapas, small portions of a variety of fresh delicacies. One of the most
typical is la bomba (the bomb), a spicy ball of mashed potato stuffed with meat
and topped with traditional allioli (garlic mayonnaise). And to wash it down, a
caña, a glass of draught beer which is always served cold, is essential.
Barceloneta also contains many churches, including the Baroque church
of Sant Miquel del Port, which is particularly worth a visit. Flamenco lovers
should also make the obligatory stop at the fountain near the Carrer Sant
Carles. It was built in honour of the flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, who
was born in the neighbourhood when Barceloneta was home to many gypsies
and shanty towns. In the 1960s, the shanty towns were demolished.
Barceloneta also connects with Port Vell via the footbridge at the end of La
Rambla. Port Vell is home to Maremágnum, a lively shopping centre full of shops,
restaurants and music bars. On the nearby Espanya Wharf are two of Barcelona’s
most innovative cultural centres: the IMAX 3D cinema and Barcelona Aquarium,
which is the biggest in Europe and the ideal place to observe Mediterranean
marine life.
Finally, also of note is the new public market, which is nestled within
Barceloneta’s narrow streets. It is the work of the Josep Miàs team and was
finished in 2007. Its architects describe it as a “collage that features César
Manrique’s fantastic fish, which are drawings for children that embody and
express the joy of the people of Barceloneta: their liveliness, their energy and
their enthusiasm in the face of frequent hardship”.

Medicine with a huMan touch for woMen
Santiago Dexeus es uno de los más interesantes médicos
europeos. Es miembro de importantes sociedades médicas
y ha recibido todo tipo de distinciones. Fue el precursor
de la fecundación asistida y el primer “bebé probeta”
español, esperanza feliz de tantas parejas, fue resultado
de su trabajo personal y del equipo que dirigía. Sigue una
saga iniciada por su padre y que tuvo como resultado la
Clínica Dexeus a la que ha tenido que abandonar por
temas que actualmente están en los tribunales. Santiago
Dexeus es el entrañable médico de miles de mujeres
que une su alta competencia a la comprensión y calidez
humana nada frecuente en la medicina actual. Una
medicina humanista con preocupación y sensibilidad
social muy visible. A sus 73 años acaba de abrir una nueva
consulta en la Clínica Tres Torres de Barcelona (Dr. Roux,
76) que ya recibe miles de llamadas, muchas de ellas de
reconocimiento y gratitud.
La cordialidad del Dr. Santiago Dexeus le lleva a buscar
un difícil hueco en su apretada agenda profesional y
familiar. Nos recibe en su casa del barrio de Sarrià, junto
a “chunga”, su perrita schnauzer consuelo importante en
este momento.
Santiago Dexeus is a leading European doctor. He is
a member of major medical societies and has received
numerous awards and distinctions. He was a pioneer in the
field of assisted fertilization in Spain. In fact, the first “test
tube baby” in Spain, an outcome dearly longed for by so
many couples, was the result of his own personal work and
that of his team. He continues a tradition started by his father,
the result of which was the Dexeus Clinic. He was recently
forced to leave the clinic for matters that will be decided in
court. Santiago Dexeus is the affable doctor of thousands of
women who is not only highly skilled in his field, but also
displays a warm human touch that is hard to find in today’s
medical world; he is a humanist doctor who openly expresses
his concern and social sensitivity. Now 73, Dr. Dexeus recently
opened a new office at Tres Torres Clinic in Barcelona (Carrer
Doctor Roux 76) and has received thousands of phone calls,
many of them of recognition and gratitude.
Dr. Santiago Dexeus was kind enough to find time in
his busy professional and family schedule to receive
us at his residence in Barcelona’s Sarrià district, along
with Chunga, his pet schnauzer, who provides him with
great comfort at the present time.

¿Qué nace el día 12 de enero de 2009?
Nace la nueva consulta de Ginecología

Cirugía Mamaria que ha sido creada con
importante esfuerzo y a toda velocidad
para no desatender a las pacientes.
Al equipo se han incorporado mi hijo,
Damián Dexeus, y el Dr. Gustavo Missón,
junto a otros profesionales, mi familia,
Elisabet Rodríguez, etc. Estoy recibiendo
muchas y cálidas cartas de ánimo y
estímulo. El primer día recibimos más
de 4.500 llamadas que obviamente no
pudimos atender en su totalidad. Y por la
tarde ya empezamos a operar. También
atenderemos la fecundación asistida.
Quiero completar la consulta con un centro
de información, una Unidad de Información
para la Mujer, porque me preocupa la
falta de datos que habitualmente recibe.
A menudo la mujeres no son informadas
de qué ocurrirá tras la extirpación de
una mama o al iniciar la quimioterapia.
Especialmente quiero informar a las
pacientes oncológicas.

La ciencia médica a menudo se salta
conocimientos y va al tratamiento.

buen observador de la sociedad porque se
interesa por el paciente, especialmente
en el caso de la mujer. Por ejemplo,
antes Inglaterra era más permisiva con
el aborto. España era más permisiva con
la fecundación asistida y en cambio en
Londres (¡horroroso!) se podía identificar
al donante de semen. En EEUU es fácil
encontrar las denominadas madres de
alquiler. El intenso debate sobre las células
ahora ya no tiene sentido porque se pueden
obtener de un órgano.
Es necesario tener presente en la
fecundación asistida que la especialidad de la
biología es más importante que la medicina.
usted habla a menudo de “envejecer
bien”. ¿Qué quiere decir?
Resulta increíble que una sociedad
globalizada no nos demos cuenta de que
de forma inmediata 1/3 de la población
tendrá más de 60 años. ¿Quién los
cuidará? Vivimos una situación social
gravísima: los desempleados y los
ancianos. Y hay que ser conscientes de
esta situación.
prepara un libro. ¿puede anticiparnos
la temática?
No es de medicina. Vengo de alta
burguesía pero me impresiona, por
ejemplo, como es tratada la madre soltera.
O como comportarse personalmente
ante un cáncer de útero o cómo atender
a una paciente aunque se extirpe un
ganglio negativo porque ella ha sufrido
profundamente. En el libro quiero recoger
algunas vivencias que me han impactado
sobre las mujeres desde una consideración
social. Quiero reflejar lo mucho que he
aprendido de las mujeres.

Why was 12 January 2009 an important day?
The new office for Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Gynaecological
Surgery and Breast Surgery opened. It took a lot of energy
and was done very quickly to ensure our patients received the
attention they deserve. My son, Damián Dexeus, has joined the
team, along with Dr. Gustavo Missón and other professionals,
my family, Elisabet Rodríguez, etc. I have received many
kind letters of encouragement and support. The first day
we received more than 4500 phone calls, though obviously
we could not attend to all of them. And in the afternoon, we
started operating. We also handle assisted fertilization.
I also want to add an information centre to the office, an
Information Centre for Women, because I’m concerned about
the lack of data women usually receive. Often women are
not informed about what happens after they have a breast
removed or when they begin chemotherapy. In particular, I
want to provide information to cancer patients.
In 1984, you and your team were the first to work in
assisted fertilization in Spain. everyone remembers the
first baby. It truly was a spectacular triumph of your
medical skill. How do you assess the process to date?
A doctor’s first responsibility is to be humble. Progress has
been made, but we still have as many unknowns as advances.
For example, we do not understand the anatomy of the cells
that make up the fallopian tubes. Medical practice often lacks
knowledge but continues with treatment.
Doctors have to live with the democratic laws of the country
where they live. And they have to be good observers of society

the case of women. For example, the United Kingdom used
to be more lenient about abortion. Spain was more lenient
when it came to assisted fertilization and yet in London,
incredible though it may seem, they were allowed to identify
semen donors. In the United States it is easy to find surrogate
mothers. The intense debate over stem cells is no longer valid,
since they can be obtained from an organ.
It is important to remember that in assisted fertilization, the
speciality of biology is more important than medicine.
You have often spoken about “ageing well”.
What do you mean?
It seems incredible that in a globalized society we appear to be
unaware that very soon one third of the population will be over
60 years of age. Who is going to take care of them? We are in
a very serious social situation with regard to the unemployed
and the elderly. We have to be aware of this situation.
You are preparing a book. Can you tell us what it will be about?
It’s not about medicine. I come from the upper class,
but I am very moved by the way that, for example, single
mothers are treated. Or how to deal with a woman who
has been diagnosed with uterine cancer, or how to treat
a female patient whose node-negative lymph node was
removed, because she has suffered greatly. In the book
I want to describe some of these experiences that have
struck me about women from a social perspective. I want
to reflect on all that I have learned from women.

industrial textil Josep Batlló i Casanovas. Mientras en el exterior realizó
una fachada espectacular –rematada con un lomo de dragón y mosaicos
de círculos cerámicos colocados según las instrucciones que daba Gaudí
desde la calle–, en el interior los espacios transportan a otra dimensión:
la disposición de los techos, los pasamanos sinuosos, los forjados, el
mobiliario modernista. Actualmente, la tercera generación de la familia
Batlló disfruta del privilegio de habitar en una de las plantas. A unos cientos
de metros, las formas vivas de La Pedrera se basan en una estructura de
forjados de viguetas metálicas, bovedillas a la catalana y las paredes de
la escalera como
únicos muros de carga.
El perfil de sus habitantes es multidisciplinar:
desde profesionales vinculados a la arquitectura y al
diseño a otros menos artísticos. En sus plantas han vivido y
trabajado ilustres como el notario Lluís Roca-Sastre, al que
se conocía como el “notario de la Pedrera”, o las oficinas
fundacionales de Cementos Molins. Los Conserjes más
“veteranos”, recuerdan como en los 80 sólo algunos curiosos
entraban a echar una ojeada; luego llegaron los Juegos
Olímpicos del 92 y el “Barcelona, posa’t guapa” y se eliminó la
polución que ennegrecía la piedra blanca de Montjuïc.
Su redescubrimiento supuso colas de turistas y dispositivos de
seguridad, incomodando a sus moradores. Insignificante molestia
compensada por el privilegio de ocupar un apartamento-museo
de techos ondulantes, elaboradas carpinterías, mosaicos
hidráulicos,
cielos rasos escritos
con invocaciones marianas y
enmarañados cierres de forja barroca en las
balconadas. Incluso el sonido parece propagarse de
forma distinta a la habitual, tal vez debido a la disposición curva
de los elementos constructivos.
Más arriba, escondida en los límites de Gràcia, la Casa Vicens se ha puesto
a la venta por más de 30 millones de euros. Si se vende, tal vez sus futuros
dueños se vean obligados a abrirla al público, como ya sucedió con la
Casa Batlló. El gran público podrá acceder, entonces, a un nuevo universo
Gaudiniano. Sin embargo, sólo unos pocos afortunados continuarán
despertando al día con la luz que penetra por un balcón de formas sinuosas y
observar los techos tallados bajo la atenta mirada del genial Gaudí.
Esta es mi visión interior, la menos conocida, la no TAN turística.

It’s an obligatory stop for tourists and
the people of Barcelona. Everyone stares at the
undulating façades. It’s inevitable. You walk by any of
Gaudí’s buildings and you stop, even if you’re in a hurry, even if
you’ve seen it a thousand times before. You always have to take a few
seconds to turn your head and look at such beauty.
Antoni Gaudí put the Passeig de Gràcia on the map of world architecture forever.
But only a few lucky people enjoy a daily dose of the Gaudí that is unknown to most
of us: the people who live in his buildings.
In 1904 the architect from Reus was entrusted with the job of renovating the
building at Passeig de Gràcia 43, which belonged to Josep Batlló i Casanovas, an
industrialist in the textile business. On the outside, Gaudí created a spectacular
façade, complete with a dragon’s scaly back and ceramic circles placed according
to the instructions he shouted from the street. On the inside, the spaces transport
visitors to another dimension: the forms on the ceilings, the sinuous handrails,
the floors, the Modernist furniture. The third generation of the Batlló family still
enjoys the privilege of living in the building. Only a few hundred metres away, the
lively shapes of La Pedrera are based on a structure of metal beams, Catalan
vaulted ceilings and stairway walls that are the only walls that bear the weight of
the building.
A wide range of people live in the building: architecture and design professionals
and people with less artistic professions. A number of illustrious figures have lived
and worked there over the years, such as Lluís Roca-Sastre, who was known as
the “notary public of the Pedrera”. The building also housed the first headquarters

company. The building’s most
veteran concierges remember that very few
people showed an interest in the Pedrera in the 1980s,
but around the time of the 1992 Olympic Games, the city council’s
“Barcelona, posa’t guapa” programme (Barcelona, get pretty) removed the grime
from pollution on the building’s façade to reveal the white stone from the city’s
Montjuïc Hill quarry.
The rediscovery brought throngs of tourists and new security measures, which
discomforted the building’s residents. But the bother was insignificant compared
to the privilege of occupying an apartment-museum with undulating ceilings,
elaborate carpentry work, mosaic tile floors, plaster ceilings with inscriptions to
the Virgin Mary and tangled masses of Baroque forged iron on the balconies. Even
sound seems to be transmitted in a different way inside the apartments, possibly
because of all the curves in the construction.
Further up Passeig de Gràcia, on the edge of the Gràcia neighbourhood, Casa
Vicens has been put up for sale on the market for €30 million. If it is sold, the new
owners will probably have to open it to the public, as occurred with Casa Batlló,
which means that a new Gaudí universe would be revealed. In fact, only a few
lucky people still wake up with the light coming in through the windows of sinuous
balconies and stare up at the undulating ceilings created under Gaudí’s avid gaze.
This is my interior vision, which is much less known and not as touristy as others. I
hope you enjoy it.

Catalan Romanesque
El Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya reúne un itinerario sobre
el arte Románico catalán que es único. Tras un largo proceso
de acondicionamiento, dirigido por los arquitectos Gae Aulenti,
Enric Steegmann, Josep Benedito y sus equipos, abre ahora
todas sus colecciones. A las obras del Románico, Gótico y el
legado Cambó se añaden las colecciones de Renacimiento y
Barroco además de la colección de fotografía y la incorporación
de la colección Tyssen que hasta ahora estaba en el Monasterio
de Pedralbes y una parte de pintura catalana de la colección de
Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza.
La colección de arte Románico es una de las más
características del Museo. Comprende fondo catalán de los
siglos XI, XII y XIII. Además de la pintura mural destacan piezas
de pintura sobre tabla y escultura en madera con notables
ejemplos emblemáticos. Gran parte de la colección se ha
ido formando entre finales del XIX y primer tercio del XX. Un
esfuerzo para la recuperación del pasado medieval
La selección y ordenación de las obras tiene un eje
vertebrador:el discurso cronológico y estilístico, determinado
especialmente por la pintura mural. Destacan las pinturas de
Sant Climent de Tahull.
The National Museum of Art of Catalonia houses a unique
collection of Romanesque art. After a long refurbishing
process led by architects Gae Aulenti, Enric Steegmann,
Josep Benedito and their teams, the Romanesque and
Gothic collections and the Cambó Bequest have been added
to the collections of Renaissance and Baroque works, the
photography collection, the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection
(housed until recently in the Pedralbes Monastery), and part
of the group of paintings by Catalan artists that belongs to the
Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection.
The museum’s collection of Romanesque art covering the
11th, 12th and 13th centuries is one of the most characteristic
parts of the museum. Also on display are outstanding panel
paintings and woodcarvings. Most of the collection was
gathered between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the
20th centuries in an effort to recover Catalonia’s medieval past.
The selection and distribution of the works is based on
chronology and style, marked particularly by the building
structures recreated to hold the mural paintings. Of special
note are the paintings from Sant Climent de Taüll.

La exposición Sorolla. Visión de España. Colección de la Hispanic
Society of America reúne los 14 paneles pintados por Joaquín
Sorolla para decorar la biblioteca de esta institución americana
con sede en Nueva York. Organizada por Bancaja con las obras
de la Hispanic Society of America y con la colaboración del Museo
Nacional d’ Art de Catalunya (MNAC) la muestra presenta por
primera vez este conjunto fuera de su espacio habitual.
El mecenas y erudito Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955),
que fundó la Hispanic Society of America en 1904 y que
reunió en ella su importante colección de arte español,
encargó esta decoración a Sorolla el año 1911. Al año
siguiente, el pintor recorrió España reuniendo imágenes
de los diferentes tipos de la geografía española. En 1912,
sin embargo, empezó a pintar los inmensos paneles
directamente del natural, empresa que no finalizaría hasta
el 1919, y que le supuso un esfuerzo considerable.
Constituye una de las empresas más singulares y
emblemáticas de la historia de la pintura española. La
muestra reúne una selección de unos 50 dibujos preparatorios,
pertenecientes a las colecciones del Museo Sorolla de Madrid
y de la Hispanic Society of America, que nos acercan a la idea
artística de Sorolla durante la fase de estudio anterior a la
realización de los paneles.
The exhibition “Sorolla: Vision of Spain” includes the fourteen
panels painted by Joaquín Sorolla to decorate the library of
the Hispanic Society of America, which has its headquarters
in New York City. The exhibition is organized by Bancaja in
collaboration with the National Museum of Art of Catalonia
(MNAC), and this is the first time the panels have been
exhibited outside the Hispanic Society of America.
The scholar and patron of the arts Archer Milton Huntington
(1870-1955) founded the Hispanic Society of America in
1904 to house his large collection of Spanish art, and
commissioned Sorolla to decorate its library in 1911. The
following year, Sorolla travelled around Spain painting
scenes of representative figures in traditional dress, and in
1912 he begun painting the enormous panels directly from
life. This was an undertaking that required considerable
effort and he did not finish until 1919. The fruit of that
labour is one of the most original and emblematic works
in the history of Spanish painting.
The exhibition also brings together over 50 preparatory
drawings from the collections of the Sorolla Museum in
Madrid and the Hispanic Society of America. These drawings
provide an insight into Sorolla’s artistic vision during the
period of study before he began working on the panels.

Els Torms is a little town sited in the Nort East of

the world (the gourmet magazine with an ampler
printing in Europe). The winner oil, Olicatessen,
is an interesting combination of native kinds and
arbequina olive as base oil. The intense fruity
fragrances of green olive, are harmonically
mixed with those of the mint leaves and the
green almonds. In mouth, it is balanced and nice.
The bitter and spicy flavour of the green oil is
accompanied by light touches of artichoke and
greenery. Taken together, it is very fresh and has
a strong personality.
Every product of the firm has the environmental
- friendly stamp. They also elaborate a natural
soap and, this year, have created the “sweet
sauce of Olicatessen olive oil”, that is an adequate
condiment for cheeses, toasts and vegetables.

El Aston Martin DBS se paseó por el Hotel Rey
Juan Carlos I a mediados de febrero pasado. Un
privilegio para la marca y un privilegio para el
Hotel que acogió un formidable coche que forma
parte del escaso grupo de deportivos que superan
los 500 CV. Y el número se reduce aún más si
lo que se busca es un vehículo que proporcione
prestaciones espectaculares rodeadas de lujo.
El nuevo Aston Martin DBS combina estos dos
factores como nadie, fruto de la experiencia y
el buen hacer que sólo una marca como Aston
Martin puede ofrecer.
El DBS nace de la unión entre el modelo de
calle DB9 y su versión de competición DBR9,
pero pesa 65 kilos menos y tiene 54 caballos
más, entre otras modificaciones. Un bloque
V12 de 5.9 litros de cilindrada, ubicado en
posición central delantera, proporciona a su
conductor la potencia de 517 CV. Fabricado a
mano en aluminio y sin necesidad de ningún

The Aston Martin DBS visited the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I in mid-February.
It was a privilege for Aston Martin and a privilege for the hotel, which
welcomed this formidable vehicle that belongs to only a small group
of sports cars with more than 500 hp. The size of the group is reduced
even further if you are looking for a vehicle which surrounds you with
luxury while offering spectacular performance. The new Aston Martin
DBS combines these two things like no other make: it is the fruit of the
experience and quality craftsmanship that only a brand like Aston Martin
can offer.
The DBS is the union of the roadgoing DB9 and its competition version, the
DBR9. However, it has undergone a number of modifications, including
a weight reduction of 65 kg and a power increase of 54 hp. A front midmounted
5.9 V12 engine provides the driver with 517 hp of power. The DBS
is made by hand from aluminium, and its performance is stunning without
the need for any form of turbocharging. It exceeds 300 km/h without
difficulty, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
However, the latest Aston Martin creation is not simply about raw power:
it is also about beauty and distinction. Thanks to the use of lightweight

Its versatility is also helped greatly by its engineering and weight distribution, as
well as the various systems designed to deliver maximum pleasure at the wheel.
For example, its Adaptive Damping System (ADS) instantly varies the firmness
of the suspension, depending on the road and the driver. The system has a Track
mode for driving on circuits, that sets the suspension at the firmest level. The
DBS’ Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also has a Track mode, and the car is
equipped with 20” Pirelli tyres.
Interior elegance
The DBS interior is exceptionally elegant. It is kitted out with leather and
Alcantara, electrically adjustable leather sports seats, carbon-fibre door

para el desarrollo muscular y ejercicio físico. También existe
un espacio cardiovascular especialmente diseñado y zonas
de entrenamiento, peso libre y trabajo isotónico. Dispone de
diversas cabinas de masaje y tratamientos de belleza.
También se incluye el servicio de entrenador personal con
un conjunto de sesiones totalmente supervisadas para llevar
a cabo un programa de ejercicio físico y salud progresivo,
estructurado y personalizado. El servicio de entrenador
personal se lleva a cabo tanto en las salas de Fitness y de
actividades dirigidas como en la piscina interior (30º) y exterior.
