CBC boosts customer support
as David Cooper fills new role
Leading surveillance solutions provider CBC (Europe)
has created a new Customer Support Manager role,
providing a dedicated one-stop link between its
customers and a wide range of support functions.
The move ensures that buyers of CBC brands

The CCTV division of SANYO
has appointed Mike Cole and
Chris Harper as Business
Development Managers.
Mike Cole’s career in the
electronic security industry
spans over 25 years and
includes spells at Grundig,
Siemens Building Technologies
and most recently, Sony, where
he was Sales Manager for the
UK and Ireland.
Chris Harper has worked in the electronic security
industry for over 20 years and joins SANYO from
Security Manufacturing Ltd where he was Key
Account Manager. He has previously worked for
Dedicated Micros and Norbain.

continue to grow strongly during 2011,” said David
Hammond, European Sales Manager for SANYO’s

ULISSE integrated with
Milestone XProtect® Suite
Videotec has announced that their ULISSE range of
IP positioning units are now integrated with the
Milestone XProtect IP Video Management platform.
Videotec is a Milestone Manufacturing Alliance
Partner (MAP), which ensures full-featured
integration of the ULISSE IP product line with
XProtect open platform IP video software from
Milestone Systems.
ULISSE IP and ULISSE COMPACT IP are Ultra Fast
Positioning Units with MPEG4 real time video, fully
controllable over IP, for most severe outdoor
environments and heavy duty video surveillance
tasks.
The Milestone Device Support Team recently
released the XProtect Device Pack 5.2, which
incorporates both the ULISSE IP and the ULISSE
COMPACT IP range into their list of interoperable
products, allowing the integration of the ULISSE IP
PTZ unit in a wide selection of third-party systems.
Operators will be able to control the functions of all
IP versions of ULISSE and ULISSE COMPACT through
the XProtect video management software, including
the wiper and washer.

lighting is successfully tackling fly-tipping for leading
Finnish waste management company, Ita-Uundenmaan
Jatehuolto who control the sites. As part of a
remotely monitored CCTV solution, the IR lighting
works in conjunction with the onsite network cameras
to capture clear images of both vehicles and offenders
who dump waste illegally. As a result, the culprits are
identified and billed, allowing the end user to recover
transportation costs for re-delivering the illegal waste
to the correct site.

Codestuff step up a gear...
West Lothian-based
Codestuff is driving
development of video
systems technology
for the CCTV industry.
The company was
established in 2004,
with just three
engineers, but now
works with some of
the world’s biggest electronics brands including
Bosch, JVC and Sanyo.
TalentScotland spoke to Managing Director David
Ritchie about how the company got started and
how he sees the market progressing.
How did Codestuff get started?
Codestuff started out providing integrated solutions
for video surveillance companies and plugging a
gap in the CCTV market. Our software let security
companies merge several video content streams
into a single user interface. Things have developed
since then, in terms of our size, our product

Scotland in 2008 and
liked it so much that
he decided to stay.
He currently works as
a Senior Software Engineer for Codestuff; a West
Lothian-based company delivering tailored video
management solutions for the security industry.
What is your background?
I got my MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the
University of Groningen in 2006 and I worked for
Sound Intelligence (SI) in the Netherlands until I
moved to Scotland with my partner in 2008. At SI I
worked on developing and patenting technology
that could detect distinct sound patterns, similar to
human hearing, in video systems. Sigard TM is
currently being used in prisons, inner cities and
service counters.
Codestuff was the natural next step up from what I
was doing at SI. At Codestuff I get to use my skills
in a pioneering company that is making waves in IP
video surveillance systems. I am involved in
growing markets like remote viewing and
networked video technology and I get the
opportunity work with some of the world’s biggest
software and technology firms.

hardware, proprietary software and our commercial
partners. There are now 18 members of staff at
Codestuff and on 7 January this year we celebrated
our 7th birthday.
What projects are you currently working on?
In 2005 we had our first profitable year and, since
then, the transition to a self-sustaining company
has been a steady one.
In digital systems, interoperability and compliance
between manufacturers is often not possible. Our
products can be used together, or individually, to
meet the demands of the security industry by
letting a range of technologies, often from different
manufacturers, work through a manageable
interface.
In March 2010 we launched the world’s first
purpose-built touch screen-based CCTV monitoring,
recording and management system – Quorum
Touch. It caters for up to 16 camera installations
and combines a multi-part CCTV system into a
single, self-contained desktop device.
What attracted you to Codestuff?
There are only 18 of us in the whole company,
including me, so I get to experiment on new
projects and do a lot of different things. Right now,
for example, I’m working on IP CCTV products for
multiple customers, integrating new cameras,
adding new features and enhancing user
experience and usability in our video systems
technology. Any spare time I do have is filled with
improving and adding to our core technology.
What makes a good Software Engineer?
A good software engineer has a good eye for detail
without losing sight of the big picture. There’s not
much sense in spending forever on the details if
they don’t fit in with the overall product or
strategy. Keeping on top of ongoing development
work is also important. The technological landscape
tends to shift pretty fast, so a good software
engineer can’t afford to stand still. He or she must
keep getting involved with new technologies.
What does the future hold for you?
My partner and I both enjoy living in Scotland,
especially in Edinburgh. We are even planning on
getting married here in 2012. Within a couple of
hours we can be in the countryside, within four
hours we can be on the west coast. Coming from
the Netherlands, where everything is a lot flatter,
it’s great to be able to see these huge mountains.
Working at Codestuff makes me feel lucky to have
found a job I thoroughly enjoy. The people are great
and there are constant challenges to keep me
interested and allow me to develop my skills.
What does the future hold for Codestuff?
Quorum Touch allows secure video streaming
across the internet and this is something that we’ll
be expanding on in the future, as cloud computing
gets ever more important. With bandwidths
increasing there will be more call for self-contained
systems to allow content to be managed securely
online. IP-based technology is the way forward for
the security and surveillance industry. Digitallynetworked
video products are leading the way
along with Access Control and Alarm Systems.
What are the benefits of being based in Scotland?
The fact that we are based here has resulted in a
number of benefits. Since the company was set up
we have had tremendous support from Scottish
Enterprise, not just financial. I’ve been sent on a
number of training courses that have been a great
help and whenever I talk to our industry peers in
Canada or Ireland they are always astounded by the
level of support available to us here.

New Hemispheric T24 IP Video
Door Station From MOBOTIX
The new hemispheric T24 IP Video Door Station
captures the entire entrance area without blind
spots from wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. The
T24 is based on the international VoIP-SIP
telephony standard with H.264 support.
When the doorbell rings, an encrypted network
connection is established with a VoIP video
phone, PC, or PC-tablet (iPad) that lets the VoIP
device communicate via a built-in intercom, or
open the door from anywhere in the world. The
door station's integrated video recorder
captures all individuals in front of the door (up
to 10,000 clips) when the doorbell rings, or
when the door opens. Likewise, the video data
can be accessed from any location.
With the access control module, individual
access authorizations can be assigned via an
RFID card, and/or an individual PIN code. Like
an answering machine, this module lets visitors
record messages, or leave messages to be
received by a visitor. No PC or installation box
is required to operate the module – the door
station and a standard IP video phone are
sufficient. The door station can also be
integrated into existing buildings using the
optional Mx2wire module which only needs the
two bell wires to connect to the IP network and
supply the door station with power.

The T24 IP Video Door Station offers an
innovative, powerful solution that is easy to
install and that has never been available to the

on the international video telephony standards

The Show Goes On at
IP-in-Action LIVE London North
With the theme "Going Green in Security & Safety"
and a programme of presentations based on energysaving
and environmentally friendly devices we
maybe should have changed the title to "Going
White" as the country was hit by freezing
temperatures and was covered in snow.
Regardless of the weather on the day though, things
went ahead with the vast majority of exhibitors and a
good number of members and guests making it
through the adverse conditions to enjoy a worthwhile
day of educational presentations, an excellent
exhibition area and networking with like minded
professionals.
Seminar Theatre Programme
Following the registration period and some well
received hot drinks the presentational programme
commenced with introductions from Andy Hennings,
IP UserGroup manager and organizer of the events.
Andy provided a short introduction to IP UserGroup
International, its mission and aims along with the
activities and schedule of IP-in-Action LIVE events for
2011. He also introduced the new element at the
events whereby exhibitors have the opportunity to
offer attending guests a promotional offer for that
day only. Three exhibitors had provided “deal
vouchers” for the day - Exacq Technologies,
IQinVision and RISCO Group.

presented "Hybrid NVR
Solutions - Responsible and
Cost-Efficient Use of Existing Resources" in which he
discussed
Hybrid NVR solutions that allow you to utilise existing
analogue video infrastructures while simultaneously
and continually migrating to the latest in IP
technology on the same system.

Roger identified that the vast majority of systems, in
the UK in particular, are currently analogue based
and therefore the customers desire to progress
towards IP needed to be balanced with budgetary
constraints. He explained that although the growth of
IP systems was now far greater than analogue, the
“halfway house” of hybrid offered the most effective
route to benefits and application possibilities IP
offers.
This was followed by Iain
Cundy, Sales Manager at
JVC Professional with
"Video and Voice -
Integrated Control Room
Solutions". Iain identified
that many existing control
room solutions employ a combination of video, voice
and data services but not necessarily linked or
managed from a single control system.
He looked at a more integrated approach to the
control room, with video and voice-based services
combined in an intelligent way with other data
streams to improve the management and support the
operator's role.

break for tea & coffee and
some time in the exhibition
area, the seminar
programme continued with
Robert Verhulst, the Chief
Technical Officer at Xtralis
who had bravely
negotiated his way to North
London from Belgium via the Eurostar.
Robert presented "A New Highly Energy Efficient
Approach to Video Surveillance Data Storage" in
which he identified that there were many data
storage solutions designed for today's IT systems
which were used for video data storage but that most
had very high power consumption, particularly when
long term storage was the requirement. He showed
how a new patented Cold Disk Technology solution
worked and explained how it substantially lowered
power consumption.
Robert was followed by Paul
Hennings, Editor of IPfocus
magazine with “Going Global
with IP Technology” in which
he provided an update of the
expansion and acceptance of
IP in the security & safety
sectors across the globe. He also took a particular
look at Central and South America and reported back
on his findings following his recent visit to Quito,
Ecuador to attend and speak at the inaugural IP
UserGroup Latin America event, IP-in-Action LIVE
Quito.
Paul made it clear that this part of the world was not
the stereotypical third-world and that the potential
for security and safety in the region was exceptional.

ONVIF Propels Interoperability Forward
In the third in a series of articles
IPfocus invites those in the know to
outline thier understanding of this
crutial topic. We are delighted to
welcome an update from Jonas
Andersson, representing ONVIF
Many security consultants and end users know
first hand what it’s like to try to integrate
network cameras, storage devices and
encoders from different manufacturers. They
recognize the benefits of an IP-based physical
security system, such as remote accessibility,
flexibility, cost effectiveness and future-proof
scalability. And more often than not they
request a security solution that avoids singlevendor
lock-in.
But these end users and customers also know
from experience that unless interfaces have
already been written to enable devices from
different manufacturers to talk to one another,
creating an interoperable system from
multiple vendors can require them to invest in
manual configuration and testing. It can also
be an expensive and time consuming task,
even for the most knowledgeable, technology
savvy professional
The recent introduction of ONVIF conformant
products now provides end users and the
security market at large with a greater
freedom of choice to select best of breed IPbased
physical security solutions from
disparate manufacturers.
Interoperability highway
A change has been afoot with the security
industry making significant inroads towards
interoperability. This is thanks in part to the
inception of the ONVIF a little over two years
ago. ONVIF, a non-profit organization, is
dedicated to developing global standards for
the interface of IP-based physical security
products.
The ONVIF specification currently includes
core and test specifications to cover device
discovery, device management, imaging,
media configuration, real-time streaming of

audio and video, event handling, video
analytics, PTZ (Pan, Tilt and Zoom) control and
security. It is now beginning to work on
expanding the core specification relating to IPbased
access control solutions.
There are now more than 300 conformant
products, identified with an ONVIF logo,
including network cameras, encoders, network
video recorders and video management
software. The organization boasts 240 member
companies.
Benefits abound
Few in the security industry would dispute
that when an end user implements a new or
upgraded IP-based physical security system at
his facility, the overriding goal is to install a
best-of-breed solution.
However, if an API (Application Programming
Interface) didn’t already exist between
products from different manufacturers, it
wasn’t uncommon for an end user to stick
with products from a single manufacturer
instead of mixing and matching, for fear of
technological challenges.
Now, when an end user sees an ONVIF logo on
a product to indicate the product follows
ONVIF specifications, it provides that end user
with the confidence that the product has been
through a rigorous set of self-certification
testing to ensure it works properly with other
ONVIF conformant products.
This level of product interoperability helps to
remove much of the complexity of network
video system design and decrease costs in
several areas of the design/build process.
ONVIF conformant products can dramatically
reduce the time spent in this process, since
the devices have been pre-certified to work
together.
The same benefit is true for end users looking
to expand, fix or upgrade their current
security system. The end user can upgrade
their IP-based security system by selecting
best-of-breed products instead of using one
type or brand of product.
Impact on RFPs and specifications
Because of these benefits, the market has
begun to see consultants and end users
incorporate the ONVIF name into
specifications, instead of specifications
identifying a specific brand as part of the RFP
process.
The bottom line is that end users want the
flexibility to determine which products best
suit their security needs and they don’t want
to be locked into using solutions from a single
manufacturer. Standardization and
interoperability, at the direction of ONVIF, has
enabled the security market to make
significant strides resulting in better product
choices, connectivity and return on
investment for the end user.

Survey of the Security Business 2010:
Developing the Business through Acquisition & Alliance
This is part 1 of a 2 part synopsis of Memoori’s
study “Survey of the Security Business 2010”. This
our 2nd annual review about the world’s business
for physical security equipment.
Its objective is to bring together valuable statistics
about the business size, shape and structure across 3
main segments; Access Control, CCTV / Video
Surveillance and Intruder Alarms; then analyse the
business opportunities that have taken place in M&A,
alliance and investment across the world in 2010. It
also reviews those technological and commercial
trends that are shaping the future of the business and
impact on where investment is most likely to be
targeted in 2011 and beyond.
Part 1 - Developing the Business through Acquisition &
Alliance
2010 has been a monumental year for the security
industry, despite a weak economy the market has
grown and confidence in its future has returned. Once
more the market is attracting private equity
investment as well as delivering explosive growth
through M&A and alliances between suppliers. The
objective of this synopsis is to bring together valuable
statistics about the business size, shape and structure.
It then analyses the business opportunities that have
taken place in M&A and alliances across the world in
2010.
Market Size, Share & Distribution
We estimate that the world market for electronic
based physical security equipment at factory gate
prices in 2010 was USD $18.67 billion; a growth of 4 /
5% on 2009 but still marginally below its peak in
2008. Of this, Video Surveillance took the largest share
at 47.5% increasing its share by 4.5%, at the expense
of Intruder Alarms 29.5%; with Access Control at 23%.
So despite overall growth in the business, intruder
alarms sales have declined and access controls has
lifted marginally, whilst Video Surveillance has
performed well particularly considering the poor
economic trading conditions that have prevailed over
the last 3 years.
This is a robust market which has outperformed many
of the electronic equipment businesses supplying the
industrial / commercial markets. For this reason
acquisition and investment has surged ahead in 2010
and is forecast to continue over the next 2 years.
Fig 2.2 shows the geographic distribution of
equipment sales in 2010 and this has changed
significantly in the last 3 years. China has more than
doubled its market share in the last 5 years to 11%,
whilst other emerging markets in Asia, Central and
Eastern Europe and South America have similarly
increased their share of the market. This trend will
continue with China probably becoming the biggest
single market by the end of this decade.
Merger & Acquisition in 2010 and Forecast to 2015
Fig 4.1 shows security deals completed from 2000 to
2010. The value of deals completed in 2010, was USD
$7.98 billion; a growth of almost 75% on 2009. This is
the highest value ever recorded and is 28% higher
than the previous record set in 2005 and 2007. This is
a startling number not least because it is in stark
contrast to what has happened in similar businesses.
So what has caused such a surge in consolidation, at a
time when the global market for physical security
equipment has experienced little growth?
In 2009 we identified 77 acquisitions compared with
80 in 2010. So the almost doubling in value of deals is
clearly not the result of more transactions. The reason
is that this year, consolidation has been much more
focused at the top end of the business, between
established large companies. The buying price for just
three deals amounted to $4.3 billion, some 54% of the
total business transacted, and a further 7 companies
paid over $250 million to complete deals.
The drivers to achieve growth in this industry are
clearly to deliver products and services that increase
productivity and provide a return on investment. IT
Convergence and integrated solutions are seen as the
way forward here. In order for companies to deliver
such systems, many have decided that it is necessary
to acquire expertise through merger and acquisition.
One example of this is the need to join physical
security with identity management and biometrics.
Some of the largest acquisitions this year have been
in this area. HID Global, the 3M Company and Hewlett
Packard have all bought big in the last 4 months of
this year.
We identified 17 significant deals for Alarm Installation
and Monitoring Companies, netting a total value of
some USD $4.18 billion. So in 2010 this segment of the
market has attracted some 52% of the total spend on
acquisitions. So why has Alarm Monitoring, long the
fragmented and low growth sector of the security
industry (but cash cow provider) undergone such a
surge in acquisition activity? On first observation cash
flow in the difficult trading conditions of the last 2
years would appear to be the main driver. However
just removing the surface layer reveals that
integration of the different security services delivered
through SaaS is the enabler of providing a much more
comprehensive and cost effective service to both
residential and commercial customers. The need to
scale up quickly is driving consolidation in this sector
of the business.
There have been some major landmarks during the
last 12 months. In January 2010 Tyco purchased
Broadview Security for USD $2 billion. This was
followed in April with GTCR’s purchase of Protection
One for USD $828 million. In September Safran bought
L1-Identity Solutions for USD $1.1 billion and in
December, Monitronics was acquired by Ascent Media
Corp for USD $1.2billion.
With the exclusion of alarm companies the surge in
acquisition activity in 2010 has been driven by
companies from outside the mainstream physical
security market. Safran, L-3 Communications, Flir and
3M have pulled off some major deals in 2010, but
mainstream suppliers like Schneider Electric, UTC,
Honeywell and Bosch have been conspicuous by their
absence.
This year is going to be a hard act to follow, because
to continue this rate of consolidation will require the
merging or acquisition of very large leading suppliers
and their numbers are getting depleted. However we
think that this high rate of consolidation can and will
continue for a few years, not least because the major
suppliers absented themselves from the dealing tables
in 2010 and have made claims to be active in the near
future. UTC have made it publicly known that they
intend to grow through acquisition and it is now over
a year since their mega purchase of GE’s Fire &
Security Division. This month, Tyco announced that
they have set aside $500 million to acquire companies
in India, Brazil, Middle East and China to push
inorganic growth in these markets.

OBI protects its business with
Honeywell Galaxy Dimension
With over 550 retail outlets worldwide, OBI is a
leading brand in the building and DIY sector
across Europe. Founded in Germany 40 years ago,
the company now employs around 38,000 staff.
OBI began its international expansion in Italy in
1991 and now employs over 1,700 staff across 47
stores with floor spaces ranging from 2,000 to
7,000 square metres, and a total floor space of
135,000 square metres. In 2009, OBI welcomed over
11 million customers through its doors.
Thanks to a positive response from Italian
consumers, the OBI Group is successful in
achieving its objective to cater for every aspect of
home improvement at affordable prices for
customers who enjoy putting their skills and
creativity to work completing DIY projects in their
spare time.
The Requirement: Over the years, OBI has always
invested effectively in physical security with
intruder alarm and video surveillance systems.
With the experience OBI has gained in security and
its own technical expertise, Inres, the division of
the group which manages OBI’s security
requirements, recognised the opportunity to
improve and optimise OBI’s security procedures
using the latest technologies on the market. Inres’
vision was to integrate intrusion detection and
video surveillance in the OBI stores and to simplify
operation and management with one user
interface.
The new solution needed to take into account
OBI's existing security systems to minimise new
investment and provide a solution suitable for its
current and future requirements. It would be
implemented in all stores throughout Italy, both in
new buildings and during the renovation of
existing buildings.
To achieve this, OBI decided that it required a
security system that would allow the integration of
intrusion and video surveillance functions to

deliver a more powerful and flexible solution.
OBI also required a flexible access control system
that could be integrated with the security system
so that one swipe card could be used for both the
access control and intrusion functions.
OBI defined that the integration software must
provide a simple, intuitive yet comprehensive
graphical user interface, possibly using "touch
screen" technology, to enable store managers to
use the interlinked and complex security system
quickly and easily. This graphical user interface
was to be located in the main information and
control centre located in the reception area of
every store.
Elcon Italia has worked for many years in the field
of systems integration and was responsible for
proposing customised software that suited OBI’s
requirements.
Solution: The search for the most appropriate
system resulted in the selection of Honeywell
Galaxy Dimension. Galaxy Dimension was the only
platform that would allow the security system to
be integrated with the access control system while
also allowing the development of monitoring
software that would integrate all security
functions (intrusion, video and access control).
Galaxy Dimension meets the increasing need for
the security market to adopt open systems which
can integrate with each other, even in highly
complex systems, and also provide the end user
with a user-friendly solution, ease of installation
and maintenance.
Galaxy Dimension’s access control function and its
compatibility with standard Wiegand readers made
it possible to use one swipe card for intrusion and
access control. This offered a considerable
advantage in terms of both time and cost. In
addition, the Galaxy Dimension system integrates
with third-party manufacturers’ systems enabling
OBI to retain its existing video system so that only

Largest HD Camera Installation

largest national implementation of HDTV video
surveillance cameras at the award-winning Saxon Hotel
in Johannesburg, South Africa. Upgrading the hotel's
security technology with the newest innovations is a
continuous return on investment thanks to the
Milestone open platform IP video management
software.
The Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas & Spa is an
international award-winning hotel for top echelon
guests such as political dignitaries, royalty, entertainers
and other VIPs. Such clientele demand the utmost in
security and privacy. The hotel's valuable original
African art collection also requires top protection, and
the surveillance system simultaneously provides
constant overview of all staff shifts and activities to
ensure the most effective operations.
Camsecure installed Milestone XProtect Professional
software in 2006 as the first stage in the hotel's
security system foundation with future-proof
adaptability provided by its IP open platform. Upgrades
were made in 2008 and 2009 to XProtect Enterprise
and additional Axis network cameras. In 2010, three
new luxury villas were built after the hotel bought
adjacent property. Scaling the security solution to the
expanded facilities brought the opportunity to leverage
the advantages of High Definition video quality by
installing Axis HDTV cameras.
Expert design brings high performance efficiency
Francois Malan, Technical Director at Camsecure,
reports: "We now have about 150 HDTV cameras at the
Saxon and 40 legacy STD resolution cameras, running
them on H.264 compression at 8fps which does not use
a lot of disk space or bandwidth. In actual fact we are
using less disk space with HDTV cameras on H.264 than
we were using with STD resolution cameras on MJPEG.
We are covering much larger areas with a single
camera than ever before and recording more pixels for
excellent coverage of all entrances for identification
purposes."
Malan explains that they chose five Dell power edge
servers with direct attached storage on a raid 5
configuration, "which is very fast performance, so we
don't lose any footage. The trick is to have fast disks on
your primary recording server. We are using SAS drives
with 15000 rpm - twice the speed of the standard SATA
drives at 7200 rpm. Also, we use a Windows 64 bit
operating system which the Milestone software
supports (opposed to the standard 32 bit OS). This gives
us more available memory which helps with the
read/write buffering process on the disks. We also
group on servers the cameras that have lots of
movement with cameras that have less movement to
balance out the performance, a practical consideration
in the design. The Milestone software also does the
archiving process to the attached storage very
efficiently and therefore does not impact on the CPU
processing or disk speeds - this is very important when
recording HDTV, also since we are recording for 3
months which produces a lot of video archives."
Plans are to also use the Axis cameras own built-in
motion detection in order to cut down on the
processing power required by the recording servers, so
the servers will barely be doing any processing work,
just writing footage to disk.
"This actually works very well with the Milestone
software as you then record from the camera only on
event. You just set up the event in XProtect and you
can still have a live stream for viewing the video. At the
moment the highest CPU usage is around 20%, which
goes up some when the client does playback on a large
amount of cameras at once," he says. "But Milestone
has some clever settings in the Smart Client software
which really make a difference when viewing in the
control room and remotely."
Malan remarks that there are a lot of other factors that
also impact HDTV surveillance design, such as switches
and network infrastructure. For example, the amount of
clients and screens to be used, or the number of
cameras displayed per screen will influence the system
performance.
Meeting the highest security demands
Many of the Saxon Hotel's high profile guests also
travel with their own security personnel. Often these
professionals will do pre-visit inspections of the hotel
to review their VIP's specific protection requirements.
"Within the security industry, including foreign and
police agencies, they know how state-of-the-art our
operation is and that it is one of the best possibly
available. They are therefore very comfortable with our
security measures," asserts Shaun Swanepoel, Security
Manager at the Saxon Hotel. "We run our security
preventively and proactively - that's what it's about."

Ganz Solutions
protects police
helicopter
When it comes to crime fighting and tracking down
criminals, the police helicopter is an invaluable tool.
Loaded with the latest video and thermal imaging
technologies, it provides a range of detection tools to
deploy against lawbreakers.
But the downside to possessing such a powerful
resource is that criminals are keen to neutralise its
capabilities, as one police force in England found out
recently when its helicopters were subjected to
sabotage attacks whilst on the ground. To combat this
threat Ganz Solutions was asked by the force to
provide effective protection. The challenging task
involved alerting staff to any potential intrusion and
providing visual verification of incidents, in all
weathers and under difficult lighting conditions.
During Ganz Solutions’ initial site visit it was
immediately apparent that the area of coverage
requested by the police was large: approximately 300
x 600 metres. The requirement was to detect any
person(s) or vehicle crossing the airfield boundaries
and moving towards the helicopter or helicopter
hangar. Conventionally, the solution to such a request
would involve the use of perimeter protection via
CCTV cameras, either PTZ or static units – mounted on
camera poles positioned every few metres – complete
with external movement detectors and supplementary
lighting. But this type of installation can be expensive
and, at best, only offer alarm-preset views of fixed
areas covered by the external detectors. Faced with
moving targets, visual verification becomes very
difficult without the presence of a real-time tracking
detection system.

Major university chooses RISCO Group Access Control &
SynopSYS TM Security & Building Management Solution
EPFL, Switzerland’s renowned university
spanning three million square meters, is
comprised of 60 diverse buildings where 13,000
students and faculty members spend time
every day. EPFL wanted a solution that would
help them monitor and control the access of
such a large number of people to the different
areas across its vast campus.
The Challenge
EPFL’s campus contains many types of buildings
and rooms including seminar rooms,
laboratories, libraries, and areas containing
sensitive materials. Each student, faculty
member, and employee requires access to
different areas within the site.
Until recently, campus users were carrying
numerous documents with them around
campus including an access card, an ID card, a
copy-machine card, vouchers to buy meals, and
spending money. EPFL found this situation to be
inconvenient and inefficient. Having so many
cards for each person compromised security
and was high in administrative costs. Factors
such as the complexity of the large site, the
diversity of users’ needs, and the different
systems already in place made the possibility
for change difficult. EPFL required a modular
and flexible solution that would integrate easily
with their database.
The Solution
Polyright, the integrator at EPFL, chose RISCO
Group’s Access Control system combined with
SynopSYS Security & Building Management
platform as the solution that met all
requirements. Applied to over 1000 doors, the
Access Control system was integrated with
EPFL’s database, and uses the cardholders’
credentials to define users’ access rights to the
campus facilities. The system enables
authorized personnel to easily modify students’
access rights based on their status and needs.
It also enabled EPFL to add an additional layer
of security for access to areas containing
sensitive information by requiring biometric
identification.
The solution provided each user with a ‘Smart
Card’ that served not only as their access card,
but also replaced all of the personal cards they
previously had to carry. The single card also
contains digital currency that can be used in
any of the campus restaurants. Each user’s
balance is registered to an online database,
ensuring that a lost card does not mean the

loss of the balance left on the card.
RISCO Group’s Access Control system was
integrated with the SynopSYS Security &
Building Management Solution. SynopSYS
enables EPFL to control and monitor the Access
Control system geographically across the entire
campus from one interface. SynopSYS provides
an overall picture of all the buildings and rooms

“Nevada Gaming Commission Certified” Basler
IP Cameras Ensure Fair Play at Las Vegas Casino
Basler Vision Technologies have announced that
several of their new IP Camera models have been
selected by Jerry’s Nugget Casino to secure their
gaming facilities in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jerry’s Nugget is a well-established Las Vegas casino
with various gaming options, live stage entertainment,
and dining facilities. In the course of a security
technology update, Jerry’s Nugget is replacing 220
analog cameras with 200 Basler IP Cameras.
The majority of the cameras are to be installed in the
gaming table and slot machine areas. With their
megapixel resolution CCD sensors, Basler's BIP2-1300cdn
IP Cameras help to identify the smallest image
details such as the face of a playing card on a large
gaming table. Additional cameras will secure the
casino’s “cage”, where chips and tokens can be
bought or exchanged for cash and where money is
counted. In this area, Basler’s new BIP2-640c-dn IP
Cameras will be used to detect any irregularities that
are too fast for the human eye to see.
For video data storage, Jerry’s Nugget relies on a
TimeSight video management software and server
solution. TimeSight’s video life cycle management
(VLM) system periodically compresses all image data
depending on its age and event severity, and thus
drastically reduces storage costs.
Some 25% of the cameras have already been installed
by Southwest Surveillance Systems, a TimeSight
Systems partner, and they are among the first
megapixel IP cameras to have ever achieved
certification by the Nevada State Gaming Commission.
Among the requirements for certification is a camera
frame rate of 30 fps, which the Basler’s BIP2-1300c-dn
delivers using any type of compression (MJPEG, MPEG-
4, or H.264). And with its frame rate of 100 fps, the

than the Nevada State Gaming Commission's

CEM Systems release sPass DESFire smart card
reader & DCM 350 secure controller
CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products,
has announced the release of a new highly
secure, yet cost-effective DESFire two-door
controller solution.
“With the threats of card cloning and the
vulnerabilities of Wiegand controller signal
cloning growing strong within the security
market, CEM is delighted to announce the release
of the new sPass reader and DCM 350 two-door
controller with secure RS485 encrypted
communications”, said Andrew Fulton, Business
Development Director for CEM Systems.
“Developed as an end to end secure solution,
these new CEM products have designed out
these security vulnerabilities with the added
benefit of an affordable price”.
CEM sPass reader is a contactless smart card
reader with powerful 3DES (Triple DES)
encryption. Available as a keypad or non-keypad
option, the sPass reader connects to the new
DCM 350 intelligent two-door controller, which
utilises highly encrypted RS485 communications
to the sPass reader. This effectively eliminates
the threat and vulnerabilities of controller signal
cloning.
In addition to the benefit of highly secure RS485
communications, the DCM 350 (Door Control
Module) features an intelligent database for
offline card validation. Operating in offline
mode, the DCM 350 can hold up to 200,000
cards. It can be configured to support two sPass
readers on two separate doors with optional Exit
push buttons, or can be configured to support
two sPass readers on a single door for Entry/Exit
control. It is available in two options – the sDCM
350 supports serial devices or the eDCM 350
supports IP devices.
CEM has also introduced a new contactless 13.56
MHz DESFire smart card to eliminate the threat
of card cloning. Each card has different sets of
encrypted keys that are securely stored on the
card for high levels of security. CEM prepersonalises
the card memory for customer
convenience and cost efficiency. This offers
customers a flexible and quick smart card
solution, without the cost of card personalisation
and key/filing management. The CEM DESFire
smart card can hold up to 28 different security
applications such as access control and cashless
vending, and 32 files per application.
Combined as one highly secure DESFire
controller solution, the CEM eDCM 350 two-door
controller and sPass DESFire reader & smart-card
will offer the security market a low cost, yet
highly secure option when a panel approach is

Vemotion Interactive have announced that its
real-time video solution has been successfully
deployed by Leedswatch, the CCTV operation run
by Leeds City Council, Community Safety, to
enhance is support of West Yorkshire Police
operations at key football matches.
Vemotion video compression and transmission
equipment has been installed in the latest
Leesdwatch mobile CCTV vans which are now
able to augment the existing fixed camera
network in cost-effectively providing live images
to Police Control Rooms (ACRs) as well as to the
control room within the Elland Road stadium.
“We have forged an excellent working
relationship with Vemotion staff who have
adapted their technology to meet our specific
need”, said Marcus Beacham, Head of Community
Safety and Partnerships. “This has enabled us to
enhance the support we already provide to West
Yorkshire Police in their operations”, he added.
Some football matches are more likely than
others to be a hotspot for public disorder and
other offences, especially before and after the
game when large crowds of fans from opposing
teams converge on the ground and disperse
again later. Whereas the mobile CCTV vans had
previously been able to record images for
subsequent viewing and capture for evidential
purposes, their effectiveness has now been
further increased.

provide live coverage of areas not adequately
covered by the existing fixed camera network as

transmitted back to a Vemotion Streaming
Server in the CCTV Control Room. An interface
from the standard mobile phone network is used
to transmit the video over the Internet using
GPRS. The Vemotion Encoder provides a highly
efficient video compression and transmission
that ensures that the quality video images can
be reliably transmitted over very low bandwidth
connections. This resolves the issues of speed
and, combined with the use of the Internet, also
resolves the high bandwidth costs as the Images
are transmitted in a highly optimised form to
make best use of available network bandwidth.

Colombian Security Professionals Converge
on IP UserGroup Latin America Event
Despite a city wide transport strike in
Bogotá, Colombia, more than 100 security
and IT professionals converged on the IP-in-
Action LIVE Bogotá event at the Lancaster
House Hotel. Hosted by the IP UserGroup
Latin America, the event brought together,
manufacturers, resellers, integrators and
end users from across Colombia and beyond.
The aim of the event was to introduce to the
Colombian security industry some of the new
techniques, products and solutions available when
utilising IP based technology. The Seminar line-up
supported this aim with presentations from Pelco,
Exacq, Arecont Vision, SONY, GarrettCom, IndigoVision,
MOBOTIX and Quaddrix (details below).
The event commenced with a welcome from IP
UserGroup Latin America’s manager Pablo Reyes and
was followed by a short presentation by Paul
Hennings, IP UserGroup International President and
editor of IPfocus Magazine. Paul discussed briefly why
Latin America was so important on an international
stage and explained how the IP UserGroup and IP-in-
Action LIVE events could help in providing expertise,
knowledge and understanding of the latest security
technology. He discussed how important utilising IP
solutions are to the development of the security
sector in Latin America and provided an insight into
the benefits that the stake-holders in the industry
can expect from the drive to IP and integrated
solutions many of which were on display within the
exhibition area.
The seminar sessions commenced with presentations
from Dario Mojica of Pelco discussing “Pelco’s IP
Solutions” followed by Juan Echavarría from MOBOTIX
with a presentation entitled: "What customers need
to know about why MOBOTIX dominates the Megapixel
Camera Market ".

Following a short break for refreshment and an
opportunity to gain hands-on experience from the
exhibitors and their technicians and sales executives
the second session started.
Victor Manotas - Director of Engineering, Quaddrix
Technologies was first up with a presentation entitled
"Benefits and Limitations of Video Analytics Security
Systems" and was followed by Manuel Hernández -
representing Exacq Technologies who concluded the
morning session with a presentation which discussed
Exacq Vision Solutions for Hybrid NVR, NVR and CCTV.
Prior to the lunch Paul Hennings presented the
membership certificates to the latest Corporate
members of IP UserGroup Latin America: Arecont
Vision, Garrettcom, IndigoVision, MOBOTIX, Pelco and
Quaddrix Technologies.
The lunch-time break was a further opportunity to
spend time with the exhibiting companies which
included: Pelco. Exacq, Arecont Vision, SONY, DIGIOP,
March Networks, IndigoVision, MOBOTIX and Quaddrix,
but more importantly it gave the delegates, organisers,
exhibitors and speakers an ideal opportunity to
networks among themselves, catch up with old friends
and build relationships with new ones.
The afternoon session included presentations from
Giovanni Callejas from SONY Latin America discussing
“New Security Trends in High Definition Video”, José
López - Vice President Latin America, IndigoVision
presenting a case study: "IP Video surveillance in
Latin American cities including the Draft Chihuahua,
and cities Peru", Larry Castelli of GarrettCom
introducing “New Opportunities for IP-based Security
Systems in Outdoor Applications” and concluded with
Manuel Hernández - representing Arecont Vision with
a lively presentation of the latest Arecont Megapixel
and HD technologies.
The event was wound-up by Pablo Reyes who thanked
all involved and the delegates returned to the
exhibition area for further discussion.

and delegated it is clear that the Bogotá event, as
with the previous event in Quito Ecuador, was
extremely well received, the presentations were of
the highest calibre and judging from the intense

Hikvision Serves Oman Ruwi Hotel
with Comprehensive Security Solution
Located in the heart of Muscat, the capital of Oman,
the three-star Ruwi Hotel overlooks the city's main
business district. With its classic fortress style
architecture, the hotel is sought after by many
business travelers and enthusiastic holidaymakers
who enjoy its traditional Omani hospitality
complemented by international service standards.
In order to protect people and assets as well as
watching over the hotel, Aitken Spence Hotels Group,
the owners of the Ruwi Hotel, required a reliable and
comprehensive surveillance system to be deployed in
the hotel. And Hikvision was chosen for its high quality
products and services.
Challenge The hotel has more than 100 well-furnished
guest rooms as well as other facilities. However, no
surveillance system had been used in Ruwi hotel
before, this presented a huge challenge to
implementing a totally new surveillance system
designed to safeguard the entire facility, including
entrances and exits, lobby, corridors, elevators and
parking lots.
Aitken Spence Hotels Group needed the ability to
acquire excellent video footage to clearly see the
security status, especially detailed images of vehicles
driving in and out of the parking lots. However, the
high temperature in Oman could normally cause
Hikvision's H.264 compression cards are being used in
the US, Canada and South America by CEVA Logistics, a
world-leading logistics company whose global network
has facilities in 170 countries and 46,000 employees
generating a turnover of $7bn. The company offers
customers complete supply chain design and
implementation in contract logistics and freight
management. CEVA Logistics has more than 1,000
branches and is the product of mergers between TNT
and Eagle Global Logistics.
As a major transport and freight company dealing with
high-value consignments and operating in sensitive
sectors, CEVA required a surveillance system that
offered quick, accurate retrieval, flexible recording
options and remote monitoring of multiple sites. There
was a need for optimization of bandwidth usage while
still maintaining image clarity. Failover/redundancy was
vital given the homeland security implications of the
international freight sector.
Each CEVA location presented different security
challenges in terms of site layout and working practices
with regard to access control. CEVA wanted all sites in
the United States to be monitored centrally at
operational hubs in Miami, Houston and Dallas, where

system failure or image distortion for surveillance
products, so choosing reliable cameras with hightemperature
resistance was a critical concern in terms
of outdoor surveillance.
Solution Hikvision’s cameras were selected for
installation throughout the hotel.
Inside the hotel, Hikvision’s vandal proof color cameras
-- DS-2CC572P-IMB -- were installed to protect the
guests’ safety and property. These products acquire
clear video with a horizontal resolution of 540 TVL as
well as being vandal proof with high impact-protection
to avoid intentional damage. These cameras are an
effective deterrent for thieves and intruders. In the
event of theft or if guests take the wrong luggage by
mistake, the video footage can help security staff
settle any problems. In addition, the cameras can
supervise waiters or waitresses in their restaurant and
encourage them to provide good service to guests.
The perimeter of the hotel was secured by Hikvision’s
color cameras and high speed domes. These cameras
mainly monitor the on-site status of the parking lots
and driveways. IP66 standard is supported to ensure
the outdoor cameras to work stably in a wide
temperature range (-30°C ~ 60°C). Featuring day/night
auto switch with the resolution of 540TVL, these
cameras can acquire clear images 24/7.
“The incidence of car theft and damage has been
decreased by using Hikvision’s cameras, and issues on
the driveway such as traffic jams or accidents can be
solved in a more timely manner,” said Sachin
Srinivasan, Chief Sales Manager of OHI Electronics, the
integrator of this project.
All the video footage is recorded locally on Hikvision
hybrid DVRs. Supporting 8 SATA hard drives with each
up to 2 TB, the hybrid DVR allows video data storage
for over 40 days. The user-friendly GUI comes with a
Windows-style interface and easily allows security staff
to operate the system. Boasting a seamless joining of
analog and IP solution, the hybrid DVRs can make it
possible for Aitken Spence Hotels Group to upgrade
the existing analog surveillance system to be a hybrid
one in case the security need arises.
“The proper use of our products in Ruwi Hotel has
proven to be a great success, which will motivate us to
serve more customers in this field,” said Maxwell Wei,
General Manager of Middle East Branch of Hikvision.
Hikvision Secures Logistics Company
managers required real-time video feeds on virtual
matrix walls from an intuitive management platform.
Solution Hikvision’s partner on this project is Unisight
Digital Technologies, Inc. The company, based in
Centennial City, Colorado, has supplied the CEVA
premises with custom built PC-based recorders using
Hikvision dual-stream compression cards from the HCI
series to encode footage generated by the analogue
cameras.
These 16-channel H.264 (MPEG-4/Part10) units provide
real-time compression. Depending on the model
chosen, display resolution can be up to 4CIF at full
frame rate. There are options for motion detection
triggering and real-time audio compression in the opensource
Ogg Vorbis format. The recording solution at the
CEVA sites is part of the Unisight Enterprise (ENT)
surveillance solution which is designed and customized
for large-scale centralized monitoring systems.
The Hikvision units can be 4, 8 or 16-channel variants
and they use a PCI.2.2 standard bus. In the application
described here the cards are being used from a
Windows platform but they can also operate out of
Linux. The cards support MASK overlay. A benefit of the
4CIF (704 x 576 pixel) resolution is ‘Smart Search’ by
which the Unisight platform allows operatives to define
or ‘marquee’ an area and look for suspicious incidents
without needing to assess the overall view. Even with a
selected portion of the image, fine detail allows close
scrutiny of driver and visitor behaviour.
Mr Arie Hornreich, VP Sales/Business Development at
Unisight, said: “This is one of our most intricate
installations to date due to the sheer number of sites.
CEVA is benefiting from functionality within the
Hikvision compression cards that allows dual
transmission and multiple bitrate. Where appropriate we
are able to record at one resolution level and transmit
at another, so making optimum use of bandwidth.”
Mr Hornreich continued: “Many manufacturers promise
you 30 fps at 4CIF but this is not always possible in the
field under tough operating conditions. But with
Hikvision these levels are achievable. We get the
encoding we need and failure rate of the units is
minimal to none. The compression cards are allowing us
to be more creative with our PC assemblies and they
contribute to the scalability and stability of the Unisight
offering.”
Any logistics company selecting a video surveillance
system is likely to demand an intuitive head-end that
makes reviewing footage a simple operation. Using the
H.264 encoding algorithm provided by Hikvision,
Unisight has implemented instant playback for the
client. The solution is the result of close co-operation
between Unisight developers and CEVA’s loss prevention
and safety personnel. It is providing real-time central
monitoring video feeds as well as facilitating analysis of
unusual incidents and provision of footage to outside
agencies including law enforcement bodies.

quizzes those in the know and gains an insight into opinions

Q. How do you see IP networked Surveillance & Security Technology developing in
the short and long term?
A. The current drive to IP is motivated by gains, resolution with megapixel or near
megapixel products, however as the other benefits of an IP solution are
realised and the total cost of ownership considered rather than comparing
individual component prices then IP solutions will become the norm.
Q. Where is Tyco Security Products placed in the market?
A. Tyco Security Products are well placed with multiple offerings in IP access
control and IP video and have not forgotten existing analogue sites, providing
hybrid solutions to allow phased adoption of IP.
Q. What new plans does Tyco Security Products have to help the Industry to make
the jump and grow their businesses in the future?
A. Tyco Security Products have introduced pure IP products and hybrid products
to cater for existing and new site and continue to develop advanced features
into analogue products for continuity with existing sites. Added to that a new
Tyco Security Products unified client front end operator control application
ensures simple operability across multiple products, diciplines and technlogies.
Q. How can traditional Security providers win contracts against IT integrators?
What is the best piece of advice you could give?
A. Whilst IT integrators are getting involved, their expertise does not currently
include security products, but they are learning. I would recommend security
installers make it a prioity to learn more about IT and networks to keep them
at the fore with security installations. In addition security installers need to
take on board traditional IT products like switches and routers and be able to
handle them like other products in their range, set up purchasing routes etc to
keep their offerings competitive. Once on board, this opens other markets to
the traditional security installer, like VOIP, hospitality network access and so on
to grow their business.
Q. How does Tyco Security Products regard the general UK installer, consultants
and service provider’s knowledge level?
A. Some are already way in advance of others, we are all on a learning curve,
early pioneers have got on board quickly and advanced rapidly, many are still
to get on board fully. Its worth remembering the old saying “in the land of the
blind, the one eyed man is king!”
Q. Do installers and consultants respond well to technical and commercial training
or are they slow?

now whereas even a couple of years ago it was perhaps seen as more of
a fad!
Q. Is there a type of Security company which will never use IP?
A. I would say yes, just like there were companies that didn’t see the point
of switching from tube to chip cameras! Eventually the market will
demand more than analogue only can supply, plus as most
manufacturers spend the bulk of their development budgets on IP
technologies, analogue will slow or cease to develop especially as
analogue sales continue to dwindle in favour of IP.
Q. Are companies leaving IP to the ‘young geeks in the office’?
A. I don’t think this is happening, it is in all of our interests that technology
is embraced and systems developed with it, however there are always the
lucky smart young people that were taught IP in school and its now
embedded in them as the only sensible solution, these people often drive
the skills learning process.
Q. How does Tyco Security Products regard their dealings with traditional
installers as opposed to IT integrators?
A. Tyco Security Products are continuing to develop conventional analogue
products to support analogue installations and integrators and at the
same time introduce hybrid systems to assist with IP migration. Training
and support is offered to all our customers in all products as equally
important.
Q. Will large IT managed service providers win-out over traditional security
providers?
A. I don’t think so, there will be some clients that will see advantages in
managed or virtualised services, however there will still be a strong
desire to hold evidence where it is needed at client sites where it can be
accessed and copied and given to authorities rather than in a cloud
somewhere!
Q. Do those engaging with IP need a particular mindset?
A. No more than they would have for other security systems, generally it’s a
logical approach if a little more open ended.
Q. Does Tyco Security Products support the idea of independent consultants
representing end-users?

A. yes very much so particuallry on the larger scale projects which need high
degree of technical input, understanding and project management. The
sevices of a well qualified consultant are invaluable to help the client select
the best system for their current and future needs and deliver the best
result.
Q. Are IP-trained engineers now demanding higher rates for their wider
security/IP skills?
A. You would expect this to be the case no matter what skills are learned, the
better skilled and experienced a person is the more value they are to the
company.
Q. Where does the UK and Europe sit with IP in regards to Europe and the rest
of the world?
A. The biggest shift to IP has occurred recently in the UK when compared to
Europe, however the acceptance of IP compared to USA has been slow
where IP is now the norm.
Q. How does the UK surveillance sector compare to those in other countries (a)
in their general skills level and (b) in their commercial attitude to IP?
A. The UK is very similar to the rest of Europe in all respects, there are more
radio based technology used outside the UK, this lends itself well to IP.
Q. Is the UK CCTV, Access Control and Alarm market too mature for wholesale
IP penetration?
A. IP offers the client or the installer advantages these will be driven in, at the
same time if conventional development slows, the move will be to IP.
Q. What other countries are big potential areas for IP?
A. The whole world can gain be accepting IP technology.
Q. Will IP penetration be mainly via hybrid, add-on systems in the UK? Is this
the ideal way to start and will the rest of the world follow?
A. The retrofit market place is far larger than new build market, especially in
recent times, so it will follow that hybrid and add on systems will be in
bigger demand than pure new IP only installations.
Q. How long will it be before IP penetrates the access control and intruder
alarm sectors in the same way as it has with CCTV?
A. The IP migration of IP is all ready well on the way, intruder will follow albeit
more slowly.
Q. Do you see emerging Technologies such as RFiD and asset management
providing opportunities for Installer/integrators?
A. Yes, once RFiD is a real option and tags are reliably readable at good
distances and of a useful size.
Q. Do you see the IT industry taking a closer look at Security and Safety as the
next killer application?
A. There are already many IT companies interested in Security – Cisco and IBM
for example.
Q. Will Hosted Services, Virtualisation, SaaS (software as a service) and Cloud
computing technologies impact on the deployment of Security and Safety
solutions?

A. As mentioned earlier, there will be some uptake, but not wholesale,
especially not in CCTV.
Q. How do you see the role of the IP UserGroup and IPfocus developing in the
coming Months and Years?
A. The IP User Group and IP Focus offer much in keeping information flowing
and available to all, either as written text or in open forums. An additional
idea could be to hold charged ticketed events such as seminars where IP
experts are employed to deliver seminars / awareness / training workshops
where installation companies could at resonable cost attend to learn more
about a particular aspect. Exhibitors appropriate to the session could
sponsor the event and exhibit their wares to show the products the lecturer
presents.
Biography
Phil joined Tyco Security Products in January 2011, he brings with him a wealth
of experience gained over nearly 30 years in the security industry.
Like many in the industry Phil started on the tools as an engineer with
companies like Security Centres, and Modern Alarms (those of who are old
enough may remember them!)
Having progressed in engineering then into sales as a Surveyor at Modern
Alarms, Phil moved to Thorn Security (then called AFA just changing to Thorn
EMI Protech). Here he gained much experience in larger scale security projects
including massive integrated systems for a well know high street building
Society, several shopping centres and large industrial sites.
After a brief excursion to the public address industry Phil specialised in CCTV
with manufacturing companies like Vicon, Baxall and Maxpro, which was taken
over by Ultrak and latterly Honeywell. Phil gained a large portfolio of
integrated systems projects in many markets including town centres, social
housing, shopping centres, industrial, nuclear, financial sector HQs and large
scale distributed systems over multiple media networks.
With much CCTV and integration experience Phil spent the last two and a half
years working for a specialist IP products manufacturer Veracity to develop
sales of their own large scale data storage product and LAN connectivity
devices along with a range of video recording devices from a Far East
manufacturer.
Phil comes to Tyco Security Products with much integrated security systems
experience a strong CCTV bias in both analogue and digital environments.

moving to IP. Frederick describes the market as

each and users of varying skill and permission
levels. For Distributed Retail clients, IP is an
extensive tool for remote monitoring management,
allowing multiple sites to be viewed and reviewed.
Small stores never visited because onsite visits are
expensive can now be up, live every day. There is
also the potential for a retail client to use the
technology to improve business operations for
additional return on investment (ROI).

March Networks reports that the Ottawa Police Service

BriefCam Revamps Video Surveillance
Just because a crime is caught on camera doesn't
mean the criminal will also be caught. BriefCam hopes
to change that with a new computer program, called
video synopsis, which automatically analyzes
surveillance video and picks out the relevant action
from countless hours of video. Video synopsis
identifies moving objects--their start time, end time,
location--isolates them, and then repacks them in a
condensed video where all objects that passed in
front of the camera are shifted in time and seen
almost simultaneously. The user can click on any
object and be taken directly to the original footage
where the suspicious or desired event occurred.

Is your Head in the ‘Cloud’?

over security issues
Security - How secure is this pink fluffy
stuff anyway?
Security is always a key consideration and as such,
the relative security of ‘cloud’ computing services is
a traditionally contentious issue.
Some argue that customer data is more secure when
managed internally, while others argue that ‘cloud’
providers have a strong incentive to maintain trust
and as such employ a higher level of security. Some
‘Cloud’suppliers, do carry security and privacy
concerns.
Data in the ‘cloud’ is typically in a shared
environment alongside data from other customers.
You need to gain evidence that data is appropriately
secured and that this a fundamental aspect of the
design and doesn’t carry additional cost or negatively
impact the use of the solution.
Suppliers’ understanding of inappropriate or illegal
activity also needs to be addressed and provided.
Customers must demand transparency, avoiding
suppliers that refuse to provide detailed targets on all
service elements and their performance against
those targets.
It’s important to note that the business risk extends
beyond a specific application being provided over the
‘cloud’. The increase in use of ‘cloud’ based services,
such as salesforce.com means that many mobile IT
users will be accessing business data and services
without necessarily accessing the corporate network
itself. This will increase the need for companies to
place security controls between mobile users and
‘cloud’ based services.
Traditional security requirements can protect inhouse
application and data environments, this must
be complemented by ‘cloud’ enabled security services
that need to enforce that all remote
connectionsfollow the same level of protection.
Many organisations also utilise social media
applications such as Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in etc.
in addition to the more formal ‘cloud’ applications.
This starts to blur the boundaries between corporate
and personal data. Its more than just data however,
security can be undermined simply by perhaps a
senior exec. bringing in their own iPad and expecting
it to work on the corporate network.
So do businesses face a difficult choice? Can they
achieve good security and higher productivity,
efficiency and convenience or is it a balancing act?
Interestingly ‘cloud’ computing itself enables security
controls and functions to be delivered in new ways
and by new types of service providers. It also enables
companies to use security technologies and
techniques that perhaps previously have not been
cost-effective. Organisations can struggle to justify
the expense of security controls or functions that are
needed to respond to unanticipated or infrequent
events. ‘Cloud’ computing, however, can make these
types of services available at short notice, while
streamlining provision at a scale appropriate to
address the threat.
So now what - where do you start?
Cloud-based services certainly can be very attractive
to an organisation. The likelihood is that your
company or certainly some of the staff are already
taking advantage to some degree. However, as you
assess the economics and risk associated with these
services, perhaps one of the first to invest in is ‘cloud’
based security services that can fully integrate with
your existing environment. As well as providing the
building blocks for any IT enhancement program,
their ‘back-office’ nature means that they can be
implemented quickly with minimal impact on end
users. Like any ‘cloud’ based application the security
provider must offer the service levels that you
require both today and as your business grows. The
common hybrid deployment of the ‘cloud’ means that
a security provider that can almost cover your whole
organisation like a flexible bubble that transitions as
your company transitions makes the most sense.
Security really is fundamental to every other ‘cloud’based
solution that you consider.
