FEEL welcome.
Just 90 minutes east of the Greater Toronto Area, this region offers
an amazing volume and variety of experiences that ring true.
And that won’t break the bank either.
Our rich mix of heritage city, cottage country and flourishing farmlands —
unique in Ontario — makes living and visiting here something out of
the ordinary. If you’re looking for a place where the people are friendly.
The landscape is breathtaking. And the experiences are authentic.
Come to Peterborough & the Kawarthas, where life grows naturally.
We wander
for distraction,
but we travel
for fulfillment.
Hilaire Belloc

Have some City with your Country
Tired of trying to find the perfect balance between endless activities and a place
where you can get away from it all? Why choose? You can have the best of both
worlds. The City of Peterborough is right in the heart of famed Kawarthas cottage
country. It’s a happening City with museums, night clubs, restaurants, boutiques,
theatres, and popular attractions... It’s only a few minutes away from amazing
lakes, stunning scenery and charming villages like Lakefield, Millbrook,
Norwood and Keene.
it’s a natural Choice
No road ahead but the one your paddle cuts. The wilderness preserves your
sanity. A week at the lake should be more than wide screen TVs and game
consoles. We tend to forget that the real stars aren’t on television. They’re
in the sky never more beautiful than when reflected in the quiet waters of
Peterborough & the Kawarthas. Take a hike. Ride your bike. Cut through fresh
fallen snow. Sightseeing flights over breathtaking landscapes. The crunch of
fallen leaves and the warm glow of a canopy of fall leaves overhead.
Get back to nature. We have.
Bite right into Life
Have you ever thought you were getting away from it all, only to find
yourself right back in it? Traffic jams, canned experiences, overpriced
delicacies? If food is your thing, you don’t have to spend hours chewing
through traffic. Come sit down at a table set with the fruits of our labour
offered up by the earth moments before. Our menus change with the
seasons, and our artisan foods and artful chefs will make your stay
something to savour long after you leave. Take it from us —
you want a taste of Peterborough & the Kawarthas.
Life is
good.
SavouR the love.
The Peterborough area is truly a feast for the senses. our rolling,
picturesque landscape is home to some of the best market gardens
and farms that Canada has to offer.
You don’t need
a silver fork to
eat good food.
Paul PruDHoMMe
From the early spring sweetness of our world champion syrup producers to
the crisp autumn taste of an apple fresh from the tree, our bountiful harvest
stretches tantalizingly across the seasons. Our award-winning meats and dairy
can be found year-round, making every day a delicious opportunity to explore
the region.
For a program that harnesses all the best that nature has to offer, you should
sample the delights of the Kawartha choice FarmFresh program. You can taste
its delicious benefits in restaurants throughout Peterborough & the Kawarthas
and with a host of markets, countless farm-gate stalls, and plenty of pick-yourown
fields, the freshest of seasonal food is yours to discover — no matter the
time of year.
Take the time to experience the sights and sounds of our many area markets,
where old-time fiddle music and the smell of freshly produced artisan foods
make for a shopping experience
that has changed very little over
the past two centuries. The
granddaddy of them all is the
Peterborough & District Farmers’
Market — home to over 100
unique vendors, the Market has
been Peterborough’s source for the
best in natural foods for 185 years.
12 thekawarthas.ca

What has changed, however, is our
fantastic selection of restaurants
and specialty food stores, where
the best of our local bounty is
transformed into tastes from
around the world. From local
freshly smoked sandwiches and
hand-tossed pizzas to vibrantly
spiced international cuisine, there
is something for everyone to sink
their teeth into.
Looking for a crash course in
the best of Peterborough
food? Try out one of our weekly
Downtown culinary Tours, where
you can nibble and nosh samples
of what our creative chefs are
cooking up from local hand-picked
ingredients. Or join in on one of
the many celebrations, festivals,
and county fairs that make
the Peterborough calendar so
delicious. Whether you are kicking
off spring at Maplefest, welcoming
summer with the strawberry
Festival, or getting ready for fall
with the Pioneer corn roast, the
area’s many regional celebrations
will keep you both well-fed and
entertained.
From farm to table — from the
traditional to the latest in food
fashion — Peterborough has it all.
REnEw your spirit.
if you wait for summer to get on the road... on the water... or on the
town... life just might be passing you by. Come to Peterborough
& the Kawarthas where activities and events are popping up all over.
In spring, our rivers are full and fast — a hotbed for paddlers of all sorts, with
outfitters and clubs to point you in the right direction. If a slower pace suits,
a walk in our untrammelled woods or along our urban trails
might get you hooked! It’s also a great time to get out your
rods for fishing season — the experts at Williams outfitters
will have you reeling for more. Don’t forget the glorious
blooms — you can follow the Garden route too!
We know you’re already sweet enough, but nothing is
sweeter or more delightfully Canadian than maple syrup.
In recent years, inspired by
influential books like the hundred
looking for an escape? For a place to feel free, cut loose, and sink your
teeth into some amazing adventures? look no further than
Peterborough & the Kawarthas.
There is a cure for couch potatoes. And that’s getting the whole family off its
duff and out doing something like swimming, hiking, fishing, boating or playing
a round of golf. Let your kids splash in the sun, track turtles in the shallows, and
make up pirate stories. Fun — the way it was before it was manufactured by
marketers and sold in stores everywhere. These and so many more experiences
can be found at many of our places to stay. Sing songs around the campfire,
catch fireflies at dusk. Indulge at a fish fry with your catch of the day. Explore the
region by pedal and paddle.
When is the last time you visited a rural destination filled with your urban creature
comforts? Spend the day lounging at the lake and the evening in a performing
arts centre, tapping your toes to a live band in an intimate pub
or dancing the night away in a club.
Ever wonder what first-rate theatre would look like if it took
place in a barnyard? Every summer, the award-winning 4th line
Theatre, near the charming village of Millbrook, comes alive with
a pleasing combination of history and drama. Of course, some
of the most interesting history is made at night. Every Friday
evening in August, the Trent Valley archives offers Ghost Walks
through one of the oldest sections of Peterborough. Looking
for something on the wild side? The indian river reptile Zoo
is home to larger than life creatures, including animatronic
dinosaurs. little lake Musicfest attracts a wide variety of top
musical acts to the open-air stage at Del Crary Park every
Peterborough & the Kawarthas is in the heart of the
Trent-severn Waterway, and there’s no more idyllic
way to see Ontario’s magnificent
cottage country than when you
slow down to cruising speed.
Take a liftlock & the riverboat
cruise, from downtown
Peterborough across Little Lake,
past its geyser-like fountain,
and into the locks of the worldfamous
the Peterborough lift lock, the
We sure know how to pick ‘em and
in June & July the berry pickings
are at their peak. Pick your own or
pick them up at roadside stands,
farmer’s markets or area farms.
FaLL for peterborough.
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that vacationing is
done. That’s what three-day weekends and impulse adventures
are all about.
From Toronto, you can be here in an hour and a half — talk about an
escape route! Show your true colours by coming out to Peterborough
& the Kawarthas. There’s so much to do besides seeing the amazing foliage turn.
A visit to Peterborough & the Kawarthas can feel like a trip to a simpler era —
no time machine required. You may, perhaps, rediscover important things about
our nation — or even a forgotten part of yourself.
But if it’s visual pleasures you’re seeking, Peterborough & the Kawarthas won’t
disappoint. Intimate galleries like the art Gallery of Peterborough showcase
the works of both local and international artists. You can experience fine art in
the country, too. And where would you expect to find the nation’s top spot to
browse and buy Zimbabwean Shona sculpture? Probably not overlooking the
waters of the county’s largest lake — but that’s indeed where you will find it,
at the Zimart, rice lake Gallery.
Tour the charming hamlets and villages that are spread across the Kawarthas, many
of which can be covered in a one-or-two-day driving tour. Lakefield, just north of
Peterborough, is a beautiful spot strung along the river. Grab an ice cream cone,
enjoy the migrating waterfowl at imagine the Marsh conservation area, or stroll
through the boutiques in its well-preserved downtown. Visit the sites of the village’s
remarkable literary history, including the former home of Margaret Laurence.
life can only
be understood
backwards;
but it must be
lived forwards.
soren KierKeGaarD

Travel a little further north along
County Road 23 to Buckhorn,
a tiny but vibrant spot near the
picturesque lake that bears the
same name. Watch the boats pass
through its busy lock, and take
in one of the many events at the
Buckhorn community centre.
Nearby, visit the Gallery on the
lake, one of Canada’s largest
retail art galleries, which includes
a lovely tea room overlooking
Buckhorn Lake. Visit in the evening,
and do a little stargazing at the
Buckhorn observatory, which
gives visitors a chance to see the
night sky through high-powered
telescopes and binoculars.
If you’ve never visited a farm
in the Kawarthas, one will visit
you. At your table. At a farmer’s
market. Or in specialty shops
and supermarkets. Learn the
history of Red Fife Wheat, or
delight your taste buds with
local wild rice, harvested the
traditional way by members of
a First Nation. Satisfy your palate
with local food and craft beers
at amazing, artisan restaurants.
For a smaller city, Peterborough
offers a surprising array of
culinary delights, year round.
ChiLL out.
Winter air is some of the freshest, cleanest, most
invigorating air to breathe. Finding ways to get
outside and breathe deeply is the key.
Like pairing a meal with the right wine, winter pairs well with
a number of things; hand-knit mittens, hot apple cider, thick
warm socks, mocha-lattes, cashmere scarves and of course
the ever-fashionable opportunity to wear countless layers.
It’s amazing how many breathtaking experiences can only be
found this time of year. The hours of conversation, food and
drinks shared in cozy ice fishing huts, the photos captured
snowshoeing trails at sunset after a blanket of fresh snow has
fallen. The smell and sounds of a crackling fire as you warm up
in a cozy year-round resort, the list goes on.
Are you the indoor type? Museums, galleries, shops,
restaurants and cultural events open their doors to you.
Try your hand at the olG slots at Kawartha Downs.
Peterborough Festival of Trees raises money for charity and lifts spirits for the
holidays. Retail therapy awaits you at lansdowne Place and adorably decorated
shop windows light the main streets of our warm downtowns.
Love hockey? Check out a Peterborough Petes game, or bring some friends and
family to play a little puck or take a leisurely skate under the Lift Lock on the Trent
Canal. At Polarfest you can marvel at the ice sculptures, take a Polar Plunge and
take a lap around an Olympic speed skating oval. Or test your toboggan skills on
Armour Hill at Peterborough snofest.
One of the best ways to embrace the chill of winter is to get out into the middle
of it all. The thrill of the trail. The beauty of pristine, white snow. These two things
48 thekawarthas.ca

enchant snowmobilers in
northern regions all over the world.
The Kawarthas have become one of
Ontario’s most popular snowmobile
destinations. With hundreds of
kilometres of trails, consistently
excellent snow conditions, and
breathtaking winter scenery
— plus an abundance of
accommodations, attractions,
and dining establishments strung
along the route — you will feel
the warm embrace of Kawartha
hospitality all along the way.
Looking for the thrill of adventure
on your weekend getaway?
Kiteboarding is a great way to
catch the wind in your sails.
elmhirst’s resort will teach you
all you need to know to glide
one way to get
CREatE memories.
in Peterborough & the Kawarthas, culture and nature go hand in hand.
This region was settled well before Canada’s confederation, and that history is
celebrated at lang Pioneer Village Museum. It is an interactive experience,
a place of living history, where costumed guides bring an authentic 19th century
pioneer village to life.
In a nation of great lakes and rivers, the canoe is an iconic symbol of the true
north, strong and free. This great invention is celebrated in Peterborough,
at The canadian canoe Museum. With more than 600 canoes and kayaks
on display, you’ll find the world’s largest collection of its kind.
In a place unavoidably shaped by its glorious natural environment, you can take a
little time to learn about how all of this was conserved. Visit the ontario Federation
of anglers and Hunters Mario cortellucci Hunting and Fishing Heritage centre,
where you can see state-of-the-art touch screen systems, life-sized dioramas and
an aquarium with local sport fish. Learn about our past at Peterborough Museum
and archives by literally walking through it. Their exhibits run in
sequence — sharing stories about the citizens and structures
that formed a path that is uniquely Peterborough.
Looking for an intense one-day adventure? Pedal and Paddle,
based at the boathouse in Millennium Park, downtown
Peterborough, offers a tour that will leave you feeling fit.
Take a little time on your own or with family and friends out
on Little Lake.

Come forth into
the light of things,
let nature be
your teacher.
WilliaM
WorDsWorTH
CuLture
&
nature
A relaxing getaway should be more about stepping out than rolling through the
motions of day-to-day life. Our trails, woods and wetlands are great for four-season
exploration. Listen to the tranquil sounds of the spring run-off from the lookout at
Burleigh Falls. Spin your wheels in the summer sunshine along the Trans-canada
Trail. Hike beneath a gorgeous canopy of fall colour with the crunch of fallen leaves
beneath your feet at the robert Johnston eco Forest Trail in Douro-Dummer.
Walk in a winter wonderland. Fasten on some snowshoes or skis and glide through
fresh fallen snow at the Kawartha nordic ski club.
And if you’re looking for motorized adventures, you’ll find those here, too.
Peterborough County is crisscrossed by an extensive network of ATV, dirt bike
and snowmobile trails. It’s a great way to combine the wonders of nature with the
thrill of speeding through it.
A land of lakes and rivers, the Kawarthas is cottage country perfection.
You can stay for the weekend (or the week) at one of the fine resorts that line
these shores such as Viamede resort on Stony Lake, Westwind inn, near Buckhorn,
or Pine Vista resort in Lakefield. You’ve certainly got options. There are many
campgrounds, cottage rentals, hotels and charming bed and breakfasts to choose
from. Make yourself at home.
