Purple Streak
The Warhawks currently have the longest winning streak in college football, in any division. UW-
Whitewater has won 37 consecutive games. The Warhawks have also built streaks of 26 in a row on the
road, 24 in a row at Perkins Stadium, 19 consecutive non-conference games, 21 WIAC games, and 10 in
a row in the NCAA III playoffs. UW-W’s 37 game streak is tied for the sixth longest ever in NCAA
football. Mount Union holds the first and second spot with strings of 55 (2000-2003) and 54 (1996-99)
games. The University of Oklahoma is next at 40 (1953-57), followed by Division II Grand Valley State
with 40 (2005-2007). The University of Washington is in fifth place with 39 (1908-1914). There is a
logjam in sixth, with UW-W joined by Mount Union (2005-2007), Augustana (1983-85), and Yale twice
(1890-93 and 1897-89).
Homecoming … Not in My House
UW-Whitewater is 63-22-1 in Homecoming games. Going back eleven years, the Pointers have been
UW-W’s Homecoming opponent four times, the most recent in 2008 when the Pointers upset the
defending NCAA III champion 17-16 in Whitewater. Whitewater’s best record versus an opponent is 10-0
vs. Platteville, followed by 11-2 vs. Oshkosh. Just one opponent holds the upper hand at Homecoming,
Saint Ambrose College, 1-2-1. UW-SP has been the opponent in more UW-W Homecoming games than
any other opponent, 14 times.
In the Polls
UW-W is ranked first in both Division III polls, the American Football Coaches Association and
D3football.com. UW-Stevens Point is not ranked.
The Coaches
Whitewater’s Lance Leipold is in his fifth year as head coach of the Warhawks and has compiled a record
of 64-3, including 26-1 in the WIAC. In his first head coaching opportunity, Leipold has earned national
Division III coach of the year honors three out of the four years and was named WIAC Coach of the Year
the last two. UW-SP’s John Miech is the dean of WIAC football coaches. In his twenty-fourth year as the
Pointers’ head coach, Miech has compiled a 156-81-2 record. Like Leipold, Miech played for the team he
is coaching. Miech trails only Roger Harring, Forrest Perkins and Bob Berezowitz in a list of WIAC
football wins.
UW-Stevens Point Notes
The Pointers came from ten points down, scoring on Mitch Beau’s quarterback sneak with 15 seconds left
in the game to win at Eau Claire, 28-24, last Saturday. The UW-SP defense sacked Blugold QB Austin
Neu four times. Beau went 11-19 for 252 yards with three touchdowns. Lineman Justin Scary with
eleven tackles, two and a half for a loss, and one and a half sacks.
