UW-Whitewater, 2-0 and number one in the D3football.com poll, will open its home schedule Saturday at
12:00 pm in Perkins Stadium, hosting Campbellsville University, 2-0 and ranked seventeenth in the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll.
Last Year
UW-W won 37-7 in Campbellsville September 18, 2010. The Warhawks scored touchdowns their first
three possessions and went into the locker room with a 21-7 lead. Whitewater added a TD in the third,
and a safety and a touchdown in the fourth, for the final margin.
For just the second time in school history (the first was the previous week against Dakota State) UW-W
had three backs rush for at least 100 yards. Booker Stanley carried 18 times for 116 yards, Levell
Coppage 14-114, and Antwan Anderson 14-104. Whitewater averaged 6.7 yards per carry, piled up 531
yards of offense, and controlled the ball almost 36 minutes. UW-W missed all four of its field goal
attempts. CU quarterback Robert Hill completed 12-19 passes to seven different receivers. Wide
receiver Stan Warrenhuffman, who caught five passes for 68 yards last year, is back. Campbellsville
safety Jeffrey DeMary led both teams with 13 tackles.
The Series
2010 was the first meeting between the schools.
The Coaches
Whitewater’s Lance Leipold has compiled a four year record of 59-3, with a record of 29-1 in the WIAC.
In his first head coaching opportunity, Leipold has earned national Division III coach of the year honors
three out of the four years and was named WIAC Football Coach of the Year in the last two.
Campbellsville’s Perry Thomas is entering his fourth year as head coach. He has led the Tigers to a
record of 19-17 during his tenure. Last year Thomas coached the Tigers to their first back-to-back winning
seasons in nearly a decade.
Campbellsville Notes
Campbellsville opened the season with a 30-14 win at home over Union College (KY). Campbellsville
trailed 10-7 in the second quarter. Senior QB Nathan Cooper, who sat out last season with a shoulder
injury, completed 21-32 for 257 yards, with two interceptions and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ four wide
formation. Lone running back Wayne Coffee rushed 20 times for 149 yards, and tied the school record
with three touchdowns. The CU defense came up with six turnovers, twice ending Union drives with
interceptions in the end zone. Senior linebacker Dwight Houston had 11 tackles, two tackles for a loss
and two quarterback sacks. Freshman DB Leon Melvin picked off two passes.
The Tigers scored an upset in game two, upending (NAIA) eighteenth-ranked Cumberland University 30-
27. Melvin made the big plays again, blocking an extra point and a field goal attempt. Cooper went 22-
42 for 249 yards, throwing for four scores with a pair of interceptions, and becoming just the second
quarterback in school history to eclipse 3,000 yards passing. Warrenhuffman caught nine passes for 146
yards and three touchdowns. Warrenhuffman moved into second place in the school record book for
career receptions (111) and third in receiving yards (1,597). DeMary was in on a dozen tackles for
Campbellsville.
Campbellsville is playing its first road game of the season.
