Chaos breeds chaos, as depicted in THE
MELON ROUTE. This film was inspired by
the true story of 12 illegal immigrants who
drowned in the Sava River on the Bosnian-
Croatian border in the late 1990s. In the
midst of the Balkan conflicts, human trafficking
through the war-ridden territory
increased tenfold. Croatian soldier Mirko,
a recovering drug addict suffering from
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, barely
earns his living smuggling people—which
he mockingly terms “melons”—across the
border, while his police chief uncle pretends
he doesn’t notice. During the historic
drowning, only a charismatic young Chinese
girl survives. With nowhere to go, she
moves into Mirko’s secluded house in the
woods. While this Croatian man and
Chinese woman, with little in common
besides their misery, become friends,
Schmidt explores the troubling affliction
of nationality. (In Croatian, Bosnian, and
Chinese with English subtitles) —E.J.B.
In 1850s India, Grace Roberts is a freespirited
young Englishwoman just arriving
at a lavish palace in Begampur to begin
her new married life with benevolent rajah
Jayant Rathod. Ignoring the advice of
many who wish her to remain a traditional
Indian queen, Grace begins teaching local
children at the beautiful and mysterious
town well. Dedicated to each other, Grace
and Jayant are optimistic that their love
will help them bridge their personal
difficulties and the political challenges of
their respective countries. One hundred
and fifty years later, a recently-divorced
young English student arrives on holiday
at the same palace in Begampur. Intrigued
by a mysterious caretaker who supposedly
never leaves the building, she comes to
find her new surroundings frighteningly
familiar. Kruti Majmudar, the Indian-
American director of THE MEMSAHIB,
and pop Indian music. —B.B.
Something is wrong with seven-year-old
Alicia’s mother Emilia. The two recently
moved into a Mexico City apartment after
Emilia’s break-up with her boyfriend. But
Emilia is hardly settled; she can barely get
Alicia to school on time, she comes home
with strange men at night, and she is often
depressed. Upon consulting her classmate
Lucia, Alicia resolves that her mother must
be possessed by a vampire and that the
root of this evil force is surely Hector,
Alicia’s old, sickly neighbor. Alicia will do
anything to save her mother and break the
curse. The subtle and touching MORE
THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD explores
the loving and complex relationship
between a single mother and her daughter
through the imaginative eyes of a child. In
her impressive performance, young actress
Julia Urbini convincingly invites us to share
in her convoluted world. (In Spanish with
English subtitles) —E.J.B.
