This film was inspired by the true story of 12 illegal immigrants who drowned in the Sava River on the Bosnian- Croatian border in the late 1990s. In the midst of the Balkan conflicts, human trafficking through the war-ridden territory increased tenfold. Croatian soldier Mirko, a recovering drug addict suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, barely earns his living smuggling people—which he mockingly terms “melons”—across the border, while his police chief uncle pretends he doesn’t notice. During the historic drowning, only a charismatic young Chinese girl survives. With nowhere to go, she moves into Mirko’s secluded house in the woods. While this Croatian man and Chinese woman, with little in common besides their misery, become friends, Schmidt explores the troubling affliction of nationality. In MOTHERLAND AFGHANISTAN, Afghan- American filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi journeys to her native country for the first time in over 30 years. Her purpose is to document the work of her father, obstetrician/ gynecologist Qudratullah Mojadidi as he struggles to change this tragic statistic for mothers and newborns in Afghanistan. Since the 1980s, Dr. Mojadidi has been risking his life to aid refugee women on the Afghan border. In 2003, after the U.S. government promises support, Dr. Mojadidi travels within the country to tend to patients and, more importantly, to educate the severely under-trained staff at Kabul’s Rabia Balkhi Hospital. His mission is nearly impossible. But he is not to be deterred. Sedika Mojadidi’s documentary about her father and her homeland is both emotional and intelligent, both heartbreaking and hopeful. Despite several skeptics, including his wife, Pilipenko has been constructing a full-scale submarine, dubbed Dolphin, in the shed behind his house for the past 20 years. Using nearly all of his meager income, he has built the bright green submarine according to diagrams in 1980s underwater sports magazines. Pilipenko innovatively added wheels to his model to ease transportation of the sub through his isolated village. Though final test runs in Pilipenko’s fish pond prove less than successful, this eager builder will not be deterred.
