ONE SCREENING ONLY
A.K.A. NIKKI S. LEE is a documentarystyle
film that depicts the real life and
work of the artist Nikki S. Lee, who
appears as two distinct invented personas:
an intellectual working out of a Brooklyn
loft (“Nikki A”) and a world traveler who
loves to socialize and thinks nothing of
hopping on a plane to go shopping in
Venice (“Nikki B”). The activities of both
Nikkis are interwoven as the actual events
of Nikki S. Lee’s life unfold. While Nikki B
jets to Paris, Mexico City, and Korea, Nikki
A stays in New York, working and reading
books in her studio. Nikki A finally concludes,
“I think New York is the only place
I can be Nikki.” (In English and Korean
with English subtitles) —B.B.
As part of our annual collaboration with MOCA
Cleveland, the film A.K.A. NIKKI S. LEE will be
followed by a conversation with Nikki S. Lee and
her gallerist Leslie Tonkonow.
Rolf de Heer’s ALEXANDRA’S PROJECT
opens as the camera lurks through the
streets of a quiet suburb at dawn. Nothing
looks wrong, but the pulsating of an overwhelmingly
eerie soundscape disturbs the
tranquility of this summer morning. The
camera stops at the house of Alexandra,
her husband Steve, and their two children
Emma and Sam. Inside, the children wake
their father with gifts in hand; it is Steve’s
birthday. Yet, their enthusiasm can’t mask
the unspoken tension between Alexandra
and Steve. As the family prepares for the
day, Steve repeatedly catches Alexandra
looking suspicious, but she reassures him:
“It’s a surprise, Steve.” Convinced
Alexandra is planning a surprise birthday
party later that evening, Steve cheerily
leaves for work, where he receives not only
a cake but also a promotion. When he
returns home after work, Steve finds his
house completely dark. Undoubtedly, there
are a slew of people hiding inside. But when
Steve opens the door, he receives a birthday
present he never expected. —E.J.B.
Goran never wanted to do anything, except
maybe own a café. But then he would have
to quit drinking, and he’s not going to do
that anytime soon. Antonio Nuić’s ALL
FOR FREE portrays the difficulty of life
after loss with emotion and charm. In the
aftermath of the Balkan wars, Goran wastes
away his days at the bar with his friends—
armless Miro, trendy Josip, and bartender
Marko. Living off of his inheritance, Goran
shares his house in small-town Bosnia with
Miro, whose own house (and arms) were
blown up while clearing mines after the
war. Following a tragic event, Goran does
something on his own for the first time—
he leaves. Wandering the Bosnian countryside,
he meets Fara, an old man weighed
down by work. To relieve his new friend,
Goran buys Fara’s refreshment truck and
makes three rules for himself: never to stay
in one place for more than a day, quit
drinking, and give all of his products away
for free. Everything goes according to plan,
until Goran meets a girl. (In Bosnian and
Croatian with English subtitles) —E.J.B.
