Sixteen years later, a television debate show features the revolution as its sole topic. But when several panelists decline to appear, the show is left with just two guests—a drunkard history teacher named Manescu and a part-time Santa Claus named Piscoci. The guests are nostalgic and proud of the glorious revolution. Calls immediately start streaming into the studio from listeners who are eager to challenge the panelist’s description of the revolution and to offer their own versions of the nation-altering event. To relate the tribe’s troubled history, Hopkins intersperses personal accounts of the Kirghiz with both staged reenactments played by the Kirghiz and the oftentimes humorous attempts of the film crew to capture these moments. The journey of the Kirghiz from Russia to China to Afghanistan to Pakistan and finally to Turkey, where they have lived for nearly 30 years, was no easy task. Throughout their forced migration, they faced problems ranging from communist aggression to treacherous climates. While the elders of the tribe mourn the loss of their land and their tradition, the young look optimistically towards the future. His profound body of work has consistently pushed the theatrical envelope with surrealist design and unorthodox choreography. His stage productions are regarded as visual achievements and his methodologies are considered unconventional. In ABSOLUTE WILSON the artist speaks with candor of his youth in Waco, Texas and the creative processes that brought him fame. Of particular significance is Wilson’s disclosure of a childhood speech impediment and learning disability that led to his ability to communicate through images. Commentary is provided by artists and supporters such as Susan Sontag and David Byrne. The film’s careful editing ties the subject and his work together seamlessly, doing ample justice to both the artist and the art. —J.B.H.
