The recent past has not been marked by
major discoveries in relation to cancer causation
by drugs. This situation is attributable,
at least in part, to the vigilance
imposed by national authorities in relation
to preclinical and clinical drug testing.
Putative drugs exhibiting activity in relevant
carcinogen-screening tests are unlikely to
be carried forward to final development
and marketing. Consequently, the prevention
of cancer attributable to medical treatment
is not identified as a major public
health need.
