Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club
The Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club derives its origin from the Saint John Yacht
Club which was founded during two meetings of yachting enthusiasts in May
of 1894. The Squadron of the new club consisted of only six yachts. Initial dues
were one dollar per year and one dollar for the entrance fee. During the first
sailing season in 1894, the club’s anchorage was at Indiantown. Because of the
lack of room the new anchorage would be located in Millidgeville. The first
Clubhouse was constructed in 1895.
The Club membership decided at a general meeting on April 5, 1898 to adopt
the name of the river on which its races were sailed. The organization was
to be called the “Kennebecasis Yacht Club”. Notification that Queen Victoria
had granted the Royal Warrant was received and the club officially became the
“Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club” on July 5, 1898. The R.K.Y.C. executive also
applied for the Admiralty Warrant on behalf of its membership. It was granted on
February 12, 1899. The second Clubhouse, which houses the present club, was
opened in August of 1901 at a cost of three thousand dollars. In its day, it
was an ambitious project. Today, this grand structure dominates the Millidge
skyline. The Clubhouse tower stands seventy feet above ground. Its unique
architecture serves as a focal point for the community.

MARINE SERVICES INFORMATION
Docks - The RKYC docks are 8 feet wide, which does not provide adequate room for two
people to safely pass if hoses, power codes, rope, garbage, and coolers are left on the dock.
It is the responsibility of each boat owning member to keep their area uncluttered. No
permanant fastenings of any kind are to be placed on the docks. Carpeting & hooks are be
removed from the pilings at the end of the season.
Power Usage - The power supply on the docks is intended for trickle chargers and not for
running air conditioning, refrigerators or supplying all the power needs of your boat. Please
use common sense, as there can be significant voltage drop further out the dock that may
cause damage to other boater’s equipment. In addition, modifications to dock receptacles,
to provide a different voltage or amperage, are not permitted.
Garbage & Waste Fluids - Garbage bins are located by the Spar Shed and please recycle
any items that you can. Garbage bins are for garbage created from boating not from
your household. Please properly dispose of used oil, antifreeze, and other toxic chemicals.
There is a disposal tank for waste oil by the Spar Shed - under no circumstances dump into
the river or on the ground.
Gas Dock - No one other than the person responsible for fueling can be on the boat during
refueling. Cheques are not accepted as payment - cash, and most credit cards are.
Parking - Ample parking is available. Please do not park on the main wharf or particularly
on the breakwater leading to A Dock. This area is for loading/unloading only.
Hauling/Launch - A member or designated representative must be present at the time of
launch and haul out to assume responsibility for their boat. The opportunity for an early
launch or haul out may exist and in some cases be required. Please check with the Marina
Manager if you are interested.
Late Launch - If you are not ready to launch on the official launch date, there will be a
minimum three week wait before your launch will occur. This allows marina staff to complete
marina installation and install masts. We encourage all members to be ready to go on the
main launch weekend. We believe this yields the greatest efficiency for the Club and
the member.
Masting - Because of the number of boats now stored in the yard, waiting to remove your
mast from the Spar Shed until after launch is strongly recommended and appreciated.
After launch, masts can be moved out and arrangements made to have them installed with
the help of the Club Crane.
Berth Assignment - The assignment of berths is based on seniority, safety, and the size
of the boat. The final decision rests with the Marine Services Committee.
Wake - The Marina and area surrounding the marina are no wake zones. A wake can be
an inconvenience at best and dangerous if a boat is rocked during mast installation.
Dogs - Dogs are welcome on club property. Please either have your pet on a leash or
controlled well enough as to not run towards or jump up on other members. Also, please
clean up after your pet and no dogs are allowed in the Clubhouse.
INFORMATION FOR VISITORS
Club and Marina Information
RKYC LEARN TO SAIL PROGRAM
2010
The RKYC’s Learn to Sail Program has been teaching kids introductory and advanced
sailing skills for over 45 years. For many that attended, it was the start of a long
passion with sailing and for those that achieved Canadian Yachting certification,
the opportunity to teach in the same program that gave them their start. Teaching in
the Learn to Sail Program makes for a pretty rewarding summer job.
The goal of the Learn to Sail Program is to teach the safe and proper handling of a
small sailboat while developing an enthusiasm and love of the sport. The course
is taught according to the Canadian Yachting Association’s standards emphasizing
safety, theory, boat handling, and sportsmanship.
Junior sailors are encouraged to participate in Tuesday evening racing at the
RKYC and in sanctioned circuit races, regional and national regattas. Opportunities
are also available for advanced sailors to join the Committee Boat for keel boat racing
on Wednesday evenings to broaden racing skills.
SAFE FUELING PRACTICES
Keep Bilge Clean
Keep engines properly tuned and operating at peak efficiency.
Regularly inspect lines and hoses for leaks and replace as needed.
Avoid pumping any bilge water that is oily or has sheen.
Never smoke while approaching a fuel dock or while fueling.
Secure your boat to the dock. Stop all engines and turn off all electrical switches.
Close doors, windows, and hatches.
Have all passengers leave the vessel before fueling begins.
You are required to pump your own fuel and please ensure you are using the proper
product and the proper fill pipe.
Do not leave vessel unattended when fueling.
Place a container over the air vent to catch any overfill. Listen to hear when the tank is
getting full and slow the fuel delivery rate as it nears capacity.
Use an absorbent pad around nozzle to catch splash-backs or drips. Clean up any spilled
fuel with absorbent cloths.
Ventilate engine compartment before starting engine.
HONORARY COMMODORE
Graeme Somerville
Graeme and wife Catherine have been members of the
RKYC since 1964. For many years the Somervilles cruised
the St. John River in “Eurydice” a thirty foot Acadian
yawl. Their first sailboat however, was a 12 foot Flying
Junior which they made available to the Junior Sailing
Program at the RKYC. Graham chaired that committee for
about six years and saw all of his children enrolled and
eldest son Peter act as chief instructor for three years in the
early 1970’s. Graeme served as Commodore in 1974 and
1975 after holding each previous Flag Officer position
for two years. Both Graeme and Catherine can be counted
on to provide clarification to any aspect of club history as
they maintain a vigorous interest in the club affairs.
